Wheel of Time studio signs Fast & Furious scribe

Hollywood writer Chris Morgan named as Red Eagle's story director for games based on Robert Jordan's venerated fantasy universe.

Red Eagle Games' adaptation of Robert Jordan's monumental fantasy franchise The Wheel of Time was lent a heaping helping of clout in January, when Electronic Arts announced that it had signed on to publish the game through its EA Partners program. Today, the fantasy role-playing game from the upstart Red Eagle gained an even higher profile, as the studio announced it has signed Hollywood scribe Chris Morgan as story director on the project.

Morgan is perhaps best known for his (arguably ignominious) reputation as the writer behind a number of Hollywood blockbusters, including such heavily panned box-office successes as The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, and Wanted. Beyond his Red Eagle collaboration, Morgan is also at work on the big-screen adaptation of Epic Games' Gears of War, which is being helmed by Len Weisman for a 2010 release.

Red Eagle landed the rights to make a range of games based on Robert Jordan's fantasy novels in November. The studio plans to release games based on The Wheel of Time on all relevant platforms, including consoles, PCs, handhelds, and mobile devices. Red Eagle Games is also prepping a massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on Robert Jordan's heralded universe, which EAP will also distribute at retail.

Red Eagle expects to release the games alongside Universal Studios' theatrical releases of The Wheel of Time. Currently, the studio expects "no less than three" films based on the books, hinging upon how well the movies perform. A release date has yet to be set.

Can't wait for the movies, but forget the games.. I just want to see the movies based on the first two books, which beat out all other fantasy books imo including those of Malazan and Ice and Fire.. though the series totally started to drag..

This article throws up more red flags than a Chinese National Pride Parade. 1. A movie tie-in game? Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to forever repeat it.... 2. They got the dude who wrote Fast and Furious? Seriously? I will say that I have very little knowledge about him (other than Fast and Furious was an god-awful movie.) Maybe he's a big fan of the series and a serious writer who was forced into writing crap movies to keep a roof over his head. Or he could be a gigantic black hole of literary suck... I guess it could go either way. 3. They plan on releasing it for every platform? So instead of one half-assed version, we'll be getting 4-5 different 1/6th-assed versions? We all know the issue with movie-games is that the developers are forced to rush a product out to coincide with the theatrical release. So instead of consolidating their resources and trying to make 1 good game (and say, port it between the 3 main systems) they're going to send out a clusterf*&^k of teams so that they can cash in on the huge Nokia and iphone gaming market? I'll see how the dominoes fall on this one, but I sure am not going to get my hopes up....

It could be incredible... "could" being the key word there. Judging from the people involved it's not looking to good.

the story, world, and characters within the wheel of time novels are epic and timeless, and the series is more or less heralded as one of the greats in fantasy over the last quarter century. the movies that are associated with chris morgan are neither epic nor timeless, and i'm not sure that he's actually been alive for much over a quarter century. ... if i was a writer, i'm sure that i would say that it's great that they giving this guy a shot at writing for something better than a movie centered around attention-starved people compensating for a lack of testosterone. but since i'm a consumer, i'm going to say that i don't have high hopes for success, but i will cross my fingers anyway, when they are not occupied otherwise.

What szwierzy? You're having trouble keeping track of the characters in Wheel of Time? There's not even 2000 of them! Well, so far - in another 3 months and another book will come out. You might try << LINK REMOVED >> to help you keep track. I don't know about Red Eagle. It's a new company and it's going to make PC games, mobile games, MMO games, hand held games.... That's an awful lot for a startup company to master. Plus they must release when the movie does, and the movie isn't going to wait if the games have troubles in beta testing. I'm afraid these are just going to be hack-together games to cash in on the movie hype. I sure hope I'm wrong, but that's how it looks to me.

I am know I am going to get reamed with negative votes for this, but Robert Jordan isn't Hemingway. Having somebody who will simple-mindedly chop away at Jordan's vision is actually going to be a good thing. I don't need to be reminded of the particular clothing tastes of every individual Aes Sedai who gives a sniff and a tug at her shawl in every single WoT book written. I have enough trouble just trying to freaking remember who is a darkfriend and who is just a b-tch. Let's also have some perspective here. If the movies Morgan had written were video games plots instead of movie plots, we would respect him. When it comes to video-game plot, we gamers aren't the hardest bunch to please. Here's to hoping one of the epic weapons is a flail comprised of Nynaeve's torn out braid. The description can read 'She tugged it one too many times.'

@bonzoso21 Well put, as I said myself, such a great fantasy work starts throwing around licenses to under qualified people and the final products are raped dry of any quality or staying true to the material.

I have to admit that I have never read any of these "Wheel of Time" novels, but Im not so sure I like who they pegged to write the script(s) for these. The only exception out of those three movies under the writer's belt I cared even an ounce for was "Wanted" but to me even that, wasn't all that great, just my two cents though. I'd start reading the novels if I weren't trying to finish up with reading Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series of books.

Im just glad they´re trying to use a world which haven't already been used in games for the nth time. Was like ten years since i read them. May be a good time to do so again.

I very cautiously optimistic about this one. I hope they don;'t make a total mess of it. As long as it is a real deep and awesome single player RPG and not some lame MMO. Then I will pissed.

@ velengar Yeah, I doubt it would be either...I've heard the ending is rather lackluster, I'm on Phantom at the moment, so I've just got one more until the big disappointment. It would be cool as a hack and slash type game with Richard wielding the Sword of Truth :)

The books I would like to see adapted to movie/game projects are Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow and Thorn for fantasy and Otherland for Sci-Fi. Otherland especially I think could make a excellent MMO game world, where different zones could be almost different game worlds and not just more of the same.

@DMBdrunkass420 I'll support the Terry Brooks cause. But really I think only the MMO out of this has any real chance of being good. The story just doesn't ever have a real ending perfect for online settings bad for movies.

This sounds like the perfect book series to base an MMO on. You would never run out of content and the game would go on and on without end, just like the books. The choice of writers is perfect also, he throws everything but the kitchen sink into his scripts and doesn't know how to wrap up a story either.

A little disappointing. I'm a huge fan of the book series and Jordan spent so much of his time and effort for nearly twenty years into writing the novels. Now he dies and the license is sold off so that WoT can be raped dry.

I don't like the sound of the writer, and the books are a little too deep to fit into just a few movies; however, it would work great as an RPG, especially an Elder Scrolls style world. If you consider all the cities, little towns, dungeon locations, ruins, and all that in Oblivion and Morrowind's world, you realize there is more than enough content there for a massive plotline such as that in the Wheel of Time books. You'd have no room for anything BUT the main questline, but it is very doable in that light.

Hmm, not sure about the writer but i could see the Wheel of Time making a good RPG, So much happens in that universe. On a side note I really have to reread the series since the new book is coming out in November I believe, but it's such a daunting task...

I just want to let you guys know... Red Eagle is a very questionable group. Do a search on their ill-fated comic book series and you'll find out that they pulled a lot of bizarre stunts that resulted in the series never getting finished. Apparently, before his death, Robert Jordan was trying to break off the contract with them. Be very, very skeptical of anything they promise.

Having read the first few Wheel of Time novels (maybe 5?), it looks like a perfect match of writing ability. Heck, there is a pretty good chance this Chris Morgan fellow will improve the writing from the books. At the very least, he certainly can't make the story even more plodding and lethargic.

OMG, this guy will ruin Wheel of time story, His writing? you call the fast and furious moving scripts writing? And I do not believe any of them were blockbusters, Maybe the first one, maybe. And what does an action/cheesey writer possibly have in common with a fantasy fiction story? Cheesey writers should stick to the JRPG's. They are going to ruin WoT. Not that Jordan was the greatest writer in the world, but better then some hollywood action writer.

Hehe, I wonder who it was that thought the writer behind the lousy Fast & Furious movies was the right person to take on an epic fantasy with millions of devoted fans. I also have yet to hear about any well-respected developers working at Red Eagle on some of the games. Sure, it's early to say it with all this stuff 4-5 years off, but I predict epic failure.
