Who Is Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan?

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Ms. Marvel is getting her very own Disney+ TV show and is featured prominently in the new Marvel's Avengers game.

The new Marvel's Avengers game is here, and the single-player story prominently features Kamala Khan. Although the focus of much of the pre-release marketing was centered around the Avengers characters known from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ms. Marvel is a major part of the game. But just who is she? Whether you're diving into the game or looking forward to Ms. Marvel's debut in the MCU, read on for a look into Kamala's back story in the comics.

Now that Ant-Man and the Wasp has arrived, the next big ticket item in the MCU's perpetual motion machine is Captain Marvel, so doubtless you've been hearing a lot about Carol Danvers. But there's a pretty good chance you've also come across another, strikingly similar superhero code name in your quest for knowledge--not Carol Danvers, not Captain, but Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel.

Now Playing: Who Is Kamala Khan? Ms. Marvel's Comics Origins

Kamala's name has been in the news even outside of tangential Captain Marvel related searches since Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige confirmed that she's in the cards for future MCU phases. So naturally the question becomes: Who the hell is Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel anyway?

Well, like most things in the world of superhero comics, it's a little complicated. The first thing you'll realize when you search for "Ms. Marvel" is that Carol Danvers has also used that name. Kamala is actually the fourth person to hold the mantle, while Carol was the first. Kamala debuted in 2013, so she's actually pretty new on the scene all things considered, and came into play just as Carol was making her official switch from "Ms." to "Captain" full time.

A teenaged Pakistani-American girl, Kamala got her start as a side character. Her first appearance was actually in the background of Captain Marvel #14 where she watches Carol in action against a Kree supervillain named Yon-Rogg. Essentially, Kamala is the Marvel Universe equivalent of a fangirl--she loves comics and her favorite heroes and keeping up with their stories. It just so happens that she lives in a world where they actually exist, so it's more like following a celebrity for her than following her favorite fictional characters.

She didn't just decide out of the blue to try her hand at the superhero lifestyle, despite her passion for it. Kamala was born without powers, and for the vast majority of her life believed herself to be completely human. During a 2013 event called Inhumanity, the Terrigen Mists, a mutagenic substance that gives the Inhumans their abilities, spread across the globe and triggered a process called Terrigenesis in Kamala (and many, many other unsuspecting people around the world).

Essentially, she was suddenly wrapped up in a weird looking alien cocoon and emerged later with her latent Inhuman genes activated. For her, that meant the ability to polymorph her cells--she can stretch her limbs, grow her appendages, transform her features, and otherwise alter the general size and shape of her body at will. She calls it the ability to "embiggen," a word that's since become something of a catch phrase.

No Caption Provided

With her new powers, Kamala began trying to ease her way into the superheroic lifestyle, and there was no shortage of missteps along the way. She managed to thwart a robbery (thankfully learning that her Terrigenesis had also given her an accelerated healing factor after she was shot in the process) and go up against a real deal supervillain named the Inventor before she decided to officially take on the codename Ms. Marvel and make herself a costume--inspired by Carol's colors and design, of course.

From that point on, she began trying to protect her home of Jersey City as best she could using her idols as examples, and even gaining the attention of some of the Marvel Universe's A-listers like Wolverine, Spider-Man, and of course Carol herself. In addition to her revolving door of team-ups, Kamala has been a member of several super teams, like the Champions, the Protectors, the Carol Cadets (a team obviously started by Carol herself), and even the Avengers for a time.

No Caption Provided

Since her debut, Kamala has become virtually synonymous with the Ms. Marvel identity and one of Marvel's most popular heroes for new comic book readers. She tends to specialize in a mix of high-flying superheroic action adventure and slice of life, coming of age stories focused on her home life and high school career. Unlike Carol, her powers don't come from Kree genetics, but the complicated relationship between the Inhumans, the humans, and the newly mutated "New Inhumans" or "Numans" puts her in a similar brand of conflict: Both Carol and Kamala exist in the overlapping areas between two different worlds, and they both struggle with finding where their responsibilities actually lie.

It's not totally clear where Kamala might find her footing in the future of the MCU, especially considering Captain Marvel's mysterious circumstances and decades-long absence from the public eye (Captain Marvel is conspicuously set in the '90s, years before the contemporary MCU). But as the MCU pushes forward with characters like Peter Parker and Shuri blazing trails for teenage superheroes, there's definitely room being made for more--and Kamala's print popularity and versatility make her a shoe-in for upcoming phases, even if it requires a little reconfiguration of her origin story to make it work.

The lamest superhero ever. Her superpowers are literally Rayman (who is a lot cooler).

She's like a lame version of Rayman.

I wish Rayman could get another game, instead of this Marvel live service.

@R4gn4r0k: Umm....no. She's far more than her powers. Her character is what defines her and she's one of the best characters that have come out of Marvel lately.

Gotta love the ignorant.

@XBgyManX: Marvel doesn’t make it easy with those incredibly lame powers. Hopefully, MCU will change them, and I’m sure they will with Mr. Fantastic set to make his debut soon.

@XBgyManX: no one really. her first book did well because she was the first Muslim superhero to have her own title. but the other ones don't exactly sell well or have any larger than life story.

They don't exactly do her any favors bu not having her establish her own universe or roster of characters.
we already had a superhero that lives in New York , struggles with family and relationship problems while trying to make work and school work within being a superhero. and ironically its int he same universe and under the same publisher.

whats more interesting is they welcome that she is Muslim and base her character on that. but the stories she is in it serves no purpose yet that's what they want you to find interesting. yet in her stories the only trait of her being Muslim is that because of it she is an outsider or bullied. her identity doesn't make her interesting, they could have just as well made her a nerd like Peter than? (which she kinda of is) so basically the only purpose of creating her was just to sell books on identity,.

Ms. Marvel is Marvel's thinly veiled attempt to be "inclusive".

@doa2169: Oh you mean like in the 50-60s with black people, 70's with women, 80's with gays, and on and on. Spousal abuse, PTSD, torture, rape, Abortion, income inequality, police abuse, genetic eugenics, ..... bank burglary (where the crimals carry out money in white bags with $ on them) ?? Come on dude, if you are reading a Marvel comic you are always reading the cutting edge of inclusive, modern day problems and issues on the burning pages of the news paper.

Stan Lee was never one to shy away from the 'tough' issues or censor stories that were too risky. Why wouldn't the Muslim community have representation in one of today's most (touching and hand on the pulse forms of )media-comics- a mirror of today's culture, whether it makes others uncomfortable or not.

Here Doa2169, grab this book https://www.amazon.com/X-Men-Vol-1-Marvel-Masterworks/dp/0785136983 on amazon and read the very first X-men comics from 1963. When Beast told Jean Grey, "She is a credit to her gender", i like to died. And while the x-men comics started out slow, after a couple of years they sunk their teeth in some really powerful issues. Same with Alpha Flight, New Mutants, most of the best spidermans, and many other.

Nothing wrong with inclusive, heck we might not have gotten Guardians of the Galaxy. If inclusivity triggers you, or your afraid of melting, well... there is always DC for you.

Nothing against her race, at all, but she is, without a doubt, one of the lamest heroes in the MCU.

If I were Muslim, I’d be offended. What are her powers? Big hands?!? Just god awful. They could’ve done better than that.

@bat725: No need to be offended on our behalf, she's a great character that doesn't need to cater to a larger fanbase. A lot of her writing involves her juggling her being a superhero and trying to simultaneously respect her culture while gradually becoming modernized.

Judging from a lot of the comments on here and other articles though the "nothing about her race" bit seems pretty suspect and we all know what the real issue is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

@bat725: Yeah, the solution is really to have more Muslim characters, so that it's not the top of mind attribute of a given character anymore. In the meantime, we'll have some clumsy attempts like Ms. Marvel. I'm glad Marvel's trying. After all, nobody says white people should be offended by lame characters like Paste Pot Pete, because he's one of thousands. We similarly shouldn't expect Muslims to wait until a new Muslim character is deemed 100% awesome by us.

@urbanman2004: Like with Captain Marvel; if you don't automatically accept Ms. Marvel as the best MCU character ever, AND you don't go see the movie that has her in it a million times, you are a sexist and a racist.

@Pwnslaught: It was still a very bad movie, that’s why Marvel hired new writers for the next one. Let’s hope it’s better than the first one. It sure wasn’t better than Wonder Woman.

@doa2169: I don't think people who don't like Captain Marvel or Ms. Marvel are racist.

I do wonder about the people who get so fired up about the characters' existence and spend time trying to sabotage them. If you don't care about the character's race or religion or gender, then just shrug and move on.

@megagood2345: and that is a very reasonable response BUT the film makers will use that as the excuse when the film bombs. It can’t possibly be the movie was garbage (Ghostbuster 2016 or Charlie’s Angels). It is because men are sexist and don’t like movies with “strong” female leads.

So it started with multiple other races, should I go around now saying I'm Czech-Polish-French-British-American? Or am I limited to list only 1, or perhaps 2? Maybe CPFB-American.

I do feel sad these days though. It seems like original stories have fallen by the wayside. Now the majority of new stories and characters in many things, not just comics, is purely a gender change to an existing story, or racial change. Is it just me? Maybe I'm being naive.

@kungpaoshizi: Yeah, you're not alone. I've noticed that too. I don't feel bad a/b what Marvel's doing b/c their not actually dismantling or doing away with the original form of the character but instead creating new versions of that particular character by way of alternate universe in order to support their origin. I feel this sort of act is admirable in Marvel's position to encourage inclusiveness of other demographics and diversity, but also relativity when it comes to young kids' aspirations to draw inspiration from heroes that look like them... I'm far from naive but other times I feel it could considered a marketing ploy for Marvel to gravitate attention and create headlines as well.

Sounds like it could have worked on Agents of Shield, but they dropped the ball there. I seriously doubt any future film is going to utter the word "terrigenesis." They couldn't even drop a background Inhumans reference in Civil War. There's no way in hell that it's making it into a major plot point of a feature film.
