Who Is The Typical Xbox Gamer? Leaked Documents Reveal New Details

The data comes from responses from 2,000 gamers in the US.

Windows Central has obtained internal Microsoft documents that reveal a number of interesting data points and context around who the typical Xbox gamer is and more.

Based on the responses of 2,000 gamers in the US, the documents, distributed to development partners to help them understand the audience better, show that the 58 percent of Xbox gamers are male, compared to 42 percent female. The 25-34 age bracket is the biggest, at 28 percent, followed by 35-44 (23 percent), 18-24 (18 percent), 45-54 (15 percent), 13-17 (10 percent), and 55-65 (6 percent).

45 percent of respondents said they live with their spouse, followed next by 23 percent who said they live with their parents. In terms of household income, $50,000-$74,999 (21 percent) and $75,000-$99,999 (21 percent) were the highest in terms of percentages.

Another slide is focused on player behavior and how players fit into groups. Fifty-three percent of users are interested in "Socializing," which Microsoft defines as spending the most time on Xbox Live (17 hours per week) and has four times more friends than average. Forty-nine percent are in the "Exploring" category (plays an average of 15 games per year), while 31 percent are in the "Achievement" group, which means their Gamerscore is 2X more than others, have spent 37 months on Xbox Live, and play around 14 hours of multiplayer each week.

Go to Windows Central to see more data points about Xbox gamers.

The next Xbox console is Project Scorpio (working title), which comes out this holiday. It plays all Xbox One games and works with Xbox One controllers, so you don't have to buy new ones. In recent news, more details about what the console's development kit can do have been revealed.

It must be nice to make $50K+ a year and be able to play 17 hours a week.

You won't find no 42% females on the PC fam. PC is def the choice of most men. Women can't handle the power. They just want to press a button and play a game. Add anything else to that equation... and they are LOST. They still struggling with how to update a driver.

@worldwartrump: I know you're only joking, but if you include built in games like Minesweeper, then social network games like Farmville, etc, quite a lot of females play games on PC. With mobile, it gets even higher.

I don't believe this data. The male/female ratio seems utterly impossible, the average age seems utterly impossible. But what killed it is the time spent playing. 53% of Xbox One owners spend at least 17 hours a week on Xbox Live? Utter bullcrap. I used to game a lot when I was younger. Now not so much because I don't have as much time. Some weeks I don't play at all, and the rest of the time my gaming is varied. Sometimes PS4, sometimes PC, sometimes Wii U. There is absolutely no way that 53% of owners play 17 hours a week. No. 53% of owners have 4 times more friends than average (what does average even mean here?). My opinion is that AT LEAST 40% of console owners do not have a single registered friend on their console.

Oddly, this survey seems like a picture perfect scenario that would make someone think to themself "hmmm the Xbox ecosystem seems like an ok place after all, maybe i should buy an Xbox One!".

Edit: Of course the data is believable, but I really question how the 2000 respondents were chosen.

@Keaze_: While I would also like to see how they obtained that sample, I think you are making a mistake thinking your personal experiences reflect all Xbox One owners.

If MS did conduct this survey, then there is certainly reason to be a little skeptical of the findings. However, since the goals are for developers, I am not sure they are as biased or faulty as you appear to think.

@Keaze_: 17 hrs a week seems a lot to some , but not a lot compared to others. I only game on weekends for the most part except for the occasional out of town trip where I can game every night, I have a wife, child and job so I only have time on the weekends really. I easily get in 12 to 15 hrs just on Saturday and Sunday alone. I know a lot of teens and 20somethings because I have two nephews. Them and their friends easily EASILY put in 20 to 25 hrs a week. Also lots of guys in their 30s are in the "steady girlfriend on the way to getting married" stage and don't go out. They would rather sit and home and game, and or party and game at home, its safer and cheaper.

Well back in the halo reach days I remember hearing a lot of screechers. I think they calculatations are wrong because some parents buy and set up the game putting their own age in their account and then letting their kids play.

My experience of Live was trying to find a Gears Horde game without ragequitters or early quitters. I'm thankful when we reach lvl 10 with a team of 4. The fifth is your usual try hard lone wolf that will quit screaming how we can't cover him in the other side of the map. I had best times and good sport players in the free PC communities, that also are far from ideal.

Can't feel that ripped of by live, grabbed the 1$ a month deal. But I might not stick around.

@Thanatos2k: Ohhhhhhh, you underestimate the internet. Conclusions will be drawn, and useful they will be to the one coming up with them in how they fit their belief system. Have you ever seen Pew Research on Facebook? Informational research articles often have numerous silly conclusions based not as much on the research findings, but more on personal feelings and assumptions.

I have a 360 and have zero desire to buy an xb0ne. The difference in audio/visual quality is too minuscule. Plus the controllers are not as comfortable as 360 controllers.

@pork7:

The fact that newer titles are being held off the 360 should be reason enough to upgrade, though I agree entirely on the controller.

I play on PC as much as I can and will always take a 360 controller over the XBO controller.

Of course these types of surveys are far from absolute in terms of capturing the average and the extremes, and they do not have built-in lie detectors, and a hell of a lot of people provide flubbed answers because they're lazy when filling out the questionnaire or they want to minimise or exagerate a response just in case there's a 'big brother' taking notes or leaking their info.

@yukushi: Your statement shows your lack of understanding of the english language. Yes more men own an xbox box than kids. But may or may not play more games. But it should be common sense that more adults than kids have the system. We adults are the ones that actually have the money to buy the systems and games. Further more those of us that are 40 and older were playing games before you were born. We were around for PONG we were around for the Atari 2600. Additionally, gaming as a hobby is much cheaper and a lot more convenient than other hobbies such as fishing, hunting, golf. I can play games at home with my 5 year old daughter in the house. I can't take her fishing(not without risks) or hunting(not without risks) or golf. Not to mention I can game multiple times a week and the weekend. all year long no matter the weather, can't do that with other hobbies. You got a lot to learn about the world that exists outside of your little circle.

@yukushi: not really wrong with the picture. Gaming on consoles really got started around the late 80's to be mainstream those kids who grew up on Atari/NES/Sega are now adults. Makes perfect sense to me that you enjoy doing something so you continue it I mean how many adults still play Basketball/football/baseball with no hopes of going pro risking injury??

@WuShogun2126#: i work in an indie store in the Uk so things may be different here. Our xbox one consumer base is almost entirely made up of age range 9-14 years. they come in with their parents and buy the same games. call of duty, minecraft, fifa, gears of war , overwatch and grand theft auto. They also buy microsoft cards to buy Ark Survival Evolved, Fifa Points and GTA V sharkcards. On Ps4 we get older customers. Call of duty and Fifa we get mostly 18 to 40 year olds. GTA V we do get a similar amount of parents buying the game for their 9-14 year old kids. my boss's son is 11 and thats all he plays gta, call of duty and fifa. On the other hand every person who bought Persona 5 was middle twentys onwards the same can be said of gravity rush 2 and yakuza 0. We have had a 75 year old came in an put a deposit on Call of Duty WW2 though. I tend to play everything myself as im a gamer and will be picking up a switch this fall i recon and will get the scorpio to replace my xbox one s.
