Whoopi Goldberg Is "Pissed Off" That Diablo 4 Is Not Available On Mac

"I paid for it, I was all excited for it. This really pissed me off..."

Whoopi Goldberg is very upset that Diablo IV is not available to play on Apple computers. In a post on Instagram, the accomplished actress and host of The View said she purchased Diablo IV, only to find out later that it's not actually available on Mac.

"You know how much I love Diablo," Goldberg said, speaking directly to Blizzard. "Allow us to play on the Apple. Let us do it and have a great time," she said. "I paid for it, I was all excited for it. This really pissed me off..."

Blizzard boss Rod Fergusson reacted to Goldberg's comments on Twitter, saying he did not expect the Oscar-winner to yell at him over social media. Goldberg is not the only person wondering why Diablo IV is not officially supported on Apple computers, as many are questioning Blizzard's choice to not supple Apple's platform.

2012's Diablo III is currently available on Mac, but Goldberg and others understandably want to play the new game on a machine they already have. Diablo IV launched simultaneously across PC and consoles, which is new for the series. The game also supports cross-play and cross-progression, another new feature for the franchise (outside of Diablo Immortal).

Goldberg is one of 18 people who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Academy Award, and a Tony Award to complete the EGOT. What she doesn't have, however, is a copy of Diablo IV that works on her computer. No doubt she could afford a computer that runs the game, but for Goldberg, it sounds like a matter of principle.

Diablo IV has quickly become Blizzard's fastest-selling game ever. The company did not reveal a sales figure, but for comparison, Diablo III sold 3.5 million units in its first 24 hours, so Diablo IV is seemingly doing better than that.

In other news, a Diablo IV Hardcore player who reached level 100 lost their character due to a disconnect.

Sad attempt to get attention. She is rich enough to buy a separate PC just for gaming if this bothers her so much.

@Barighm: Thank you for welcoming me to your planet. I assume this response is due to my failure to recognize the life form depicted in the article. Contrary to popular belief, the USA is not the only country on Earth. I know this because I saw many countries when I first came aboard my spaceship. I've also scanned several life forms, and none appear to be omnipotent about what goes on in other countries.

Whoopsies, I wasn't supposed to reveal that I'm an alien.

@mogan: I still have a disc copy of Diablo 1 and it says it works on PC and Mac. It's puzzling that they could do it way back then, but somehow can't now.

@gamerboy100: Cost vs Value. As a general estimate, over 95% of the desktop/laptop gaming market is comprised of PC users, with Mac users making up less than 5%. Given that, is it worth the cost to address the 5%? Really depends on the dev cost to make a mac version - but probably not worth it, at least initially.

@christophersays: This is outdated by a few years, but there are over 100 million Mac users.

https://techcrunch.com/2018/10/30/there-are-now-100-million-macs-in-use/

That is definitely not an insignificant number of users.

I kind of agree with Whoopi. Blizzard is one of very few devs that have a long history of releasing products for both PC and Mac. It’s reasonable for her to expect it and she has every right to be upset about it because it IS a first for the franchise. I don’t get the rude comments about her. She may be famous, you may disagree with her views, but she’s also apparently a fan of Diablo and that’s pretty cool. So maybe try to relate instead of being a total asshat, I dunno.

@theStrict9: To be fair - back during the Diablo 1 days, there were more Mac gamers. I remember my FIRST ever computer gaming was on a Mac. Then 486 and then first Pentium CPUs, and I switched to PC and never looked back.

Now a days though (as I put in another comment) - it's more like 95% PC desktop/laptop gamers vs 5% mac gamers. That was some of the rough numbers I found via some Googling (take with a grain of salt). It could be way better like 75% PC or 25% mac in a best case, but 95/5 is the numbers I found after a quick search.

@christophersays: It's still a shift in Blizzard's usual practice. Even in the old days, companies didn't want to invest in a Mac port, but Blizzard was one of a few AAA companies that would throw a bone to Mac gamers every once in a while. I'm not arguing that Blizzard should do it, I'm just saying I understand why it's upsetting.

@com2006: You're not wrong, but Blizzard games have come with both PC and Mac version (on the same disc even, back when we had those) since the 90's. Some casual who doesn't live eat and breathe games like we do, wouldn't be totally off base assuming that is still true.

It's odd that rich people always seem to be put into two categories. If rich people complain about the price of something people tell them that it shouldn't be a big deal to them because they have money. (just because you have money doesn't mean you don't value what you have). But if rich people spend their money people tell that they are wasting it. I'm sure if she had a top tier PC with all the best parts people would probably be saying "must be nice to be able to afford all those parts" or something. You just can't win.

@Lord_Sesshy: Pretty sure she's getting wrecked for buying a Mac to play video games, not by how much money she does or doesn't spend on anything. Gaming is not something Apple focuses on nor is it something people who buy Apple products focus on except for mobile garbage on iPhones. There are two types of people who buy Macs; graphic artists and people who want to show other people they can afford to buy a Mac. Heck, they're trying to sell a $3500 VR/AR headset and 90% of their reveal demo was looking at family photos, text messaging or talking to people like an iPhone. They said you can play games but didn't bother to show it playing games. Just 20 minutes of photos, movies, shopping and chatting.
