Why Beyond Good & Evil 2 Has Taken So Long

"Now the tech is ready and the team is fantastic!"

Beyond Good & Evil 2 was teased through a series of Instagram photos before getting officially revealed as in development earlier this month. The game was originally announced back in 2008, and now we know why it's taken so long for it to enter production.

Creator Michel Ancel shared a new image that showed 2008 models of the first game's main characters Jade, Pey'j, and a character who could be Double H. In the description, Ancel provided an explanation as to why they didn't continue development back then.

A photo posted by Michel Ancel (@michelancel) on

"The game was playable with many prototypes," Ancel wrote. "All videos were real time, but we had too much technical issues. We wanted planet exploration, space travel, cities. All this was also supposed to be in [the original Beyond Good & Evil].

"Instead of not doing the game of our dreams, we decided to return to 2D, have fun with Rayman, and go back at work for Beyond Good and Evil 2. We still have loooooots of work, but now the tech is ready and the team is fantastic!"

It was announced that Ubisoft's Montpellier studio will work with Ancel on Beyond Good & Evil 2. Other games the studio has worked on include Rayman Origins, Rayman Legends, and Valiant Hearts: The Great War. It's also helping with development on the upcoming Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

Ubisoft didn't show or talk about Beyond Good & Evil 2 much after its 2008 announcement. A trademark was filed this past April, and at E3 2016, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that Ancel was working on the long-awaited sequel, though he could not say when it would release.

"It's difficult to say," Guillemot said. "Michel is working on it, but he's doing two games at the same time--he's doing Wild at the same time. It's coming along, but he has to spend more time on it, so we can see it faster."

Ancel is working on Wild with his own team, Wild Sheep Studio. It's an open-world survival game that lets you possess eagles and bears, and it's set to release exclusively on PS4.

With the latest confirmation that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is in development, we still have no solid idea of a release date. The original game released in 2003.

@toyabrown: Just hope they can dial back on the swearing. First game didn't need to pepper itself with colorfully-placed curse words to make itself interesting.

And here I thought it was because he wanted to sell Rayman games.

"Buy this new Rayman to support BG&E2!" *delays BG&E2*

"Buy this new old HD remake of Rayman to support BG&E2!" *delay*

"Buy this new..." *delay*

What's the meaning of the game, "BEYOND Good and Evil"? Is it a Niztche quote? As far as I understand it has nothing to do with the game.

Such an underrated game. If the sequel is anything like the original but with modern graphics it'll be awesome.

«We wanted planet exploration, space travel, cities. All this was also supposed to be in [the original Beyond Good & Evil]».

But guess what? There weren't included and the game is great. I'm afraid Ancel is too busy chasing «the game of our dreams» than to make a good game.

nice to know they are getting back into this games development. The original games pretty dated but still pretty playable. I hope the new game is a bit more rpg like and open worlded. Original game almost wanted to be open world but couldn't do it probably due to the technical limits.

Yeah I would say so. It sounds like they were, and are going to be, making a properly big game. I expect around 2 years of development, before Vivendi cancels it.

I think they're shooting themselves in the kneecap every time they mention this game without any real progress having been done... it just builds hype for something that doesn't exist and probably never will in the way the developer seems to imagine it (sound familiar...?). Wait till you've got something concrete before you unleash the hype train.

The expectations for this game seem to be out of thin air anyway... the first game was good, but everytime a sequel is mentioned it seems like the bar is raised exponentially... now people will be expecting space exploration with multiple planets and fully fledged cities... wtf?! Are you guys kidding me? You're setting yourselves up for a flop I think...

"we didn't have the tech back then" seems to be a recurring theme with these vaporware games that ressurged this gen. makes you think how much devs overestimated last gen.

@BrunoBRS: It's also a blatant lie. Why? Because the first BG&E game was straining at the seams due to tech issues too, but that didn't stop them from making and releasing it.

@Thanatos2k: let's see, a game is made, has tech issues and scope limitations due to hardware, sells like shit. i wonder why they didn't want to repeat the mistake.

@BrunoBRS: Honestly, looking at most games this gen versus last gen, I really wondering what tech they could have possibly needed. Unless they needed something physics based, a lot of characters/objects on screen, completely seamless areas, or something that required specific development tools that didn't exist yet, I don't really see much of anything that couldn't have been done ten or more years ago, with the only difference being graphics.

@BladeManEXE: last guardian probably needed physics for the fur/feathers, and maybe AI? FFXV is a matter of size and seamlessness. i assume the same applies here.

this seems like the fleeting never ending dream, far too uncertain to be completed, I won't certanly bet on it be completed before quite a while, they idea seems far too fleeting and not solid, however this could change we'll see, anyhow I'm not having any expectation out of this, it's all up to the devs )=

Ubisoft: "You got the tech working? All of it?"

Ancel: "Yes! We're ready to make a proper game!"

Ubisoft: "Okay, you have my blessing."

Ancel: "Really? YES! I won't disappoint you." *runs off with an excited look on his face."

Ubisoft assistant: "You know the tech is likely still buggy and problematic, right?"

Ubisoft: "Oh, when has that ever stopped us? Now, get to work figuring out what content can be cut and sold as DLC. We don't want any significant plotholes or loose ends resolved within the base game."

What a load. "Well, we announced the game, but it was hard so then we just stopped working on it!"

Yeah, thanks a lot. We know. Why announce a game you had no intention of completing?

Even now they can't even commit to the game. "Well, we're working on other games too, so maybe we'll get to this sometime?" Inspiring such confidence in how much you care about this game, Ubisoft.

@Thanatos2k: Mother 3 was canceled at one point in time, but it was later revived as a GBA game. Unfortunately, it wasn't release outside of Japan.

@Thanatos2k: Rather the developer make it the way he wants then to wait another 13-14 years for the next game. Or not be as good as everyone who's been waiting for it all of these years.

@uncle5555: Here's a dark secret - the first game wasn't even that great. Solid, sure, but pretty clunky gameplay too. Given the first game is now somehow the most amazing thing ever in many people's minds a second game will never live up to the fallacious pedestal the first game was placed on.

@uncle5555: they said this before, anyways they've big ideas for this game, the issue is how much big do they want it to be, usually when it's about turning a dream into reality you need to have some solid numbers knowing where you start and finish, and that's what worries me )= eitherway not placing any high expectation

@Forcecaster: Well it wouldn't be a surprise now that Ubisoft has made it have the worst, most unceremonious, depressing and desperate reveal ever.

Although it would be surprising if they'd have anything worthwhile to show at E3 considering the game will have just been in production for a couple of months by that point.

Sorry for being a bummer, but the context of this announcement is a sad wet blanket.
The game's at least two years away and was announced during its pre-production stage because Ubisoft is fighting off Vivendi's attempted takeover, wants to show shareholders that they value creatives, with the implication being that Vivendi would cancel this game, which they very well might. It's literally the worst announcement of a game ever. Also because it isn't one as the game was already announced in 2008.
