Why Destiny 2 Doesn't Use Dedicated Servers

The game instead makes use of a "hybrid of client-server and peer-to-peer technology."

Following the big Destiny 2 reveal event last week, developer Bungie has now confirmed more details about the shooter in the area of servers, networking, and the PC edition.

In Bungie's latest weekly blog post, engineering boss Matt Segur started off by talking about how the game's "networking model" works and why there are no dedicated servers.

No Caption Provided

"Every activity in Destiny 2 is hosted by one of our servers. That means you will never again suffer a host migration during your Raid attempt or Trials match," Segur explained. "This differs from Destiny 1, where these hosting duties were performed by player consoles and only script and mission logic ran in the data center. "

You can watch this in-depth video presentation from the Game Developers Conference to dive deep into the specifics of what's new and changed.

Bungie said it does not use the term "dedicated servers" for Destiny 2 because the game actually uses a "hybrid of client-server and peer-to-peer technology," just as Destiny 1 did.

"The server is authoritative over how the game progresses, and each player is authoritative over their own movement and abilities," Segur said. "This allows us to give players the feeling of immediacy in all their moving and shooting--no matter where they live and no matter whom they choose to play with."

Is Bungie trying to save money by using a peer-to-peer model for Destiny? "Nope!" Segur said, adding that Bungie has invested "heavily" in new server tech for Destiny 2, including cloud servers for gameplay, a feature that wasn't used for Destiny 2.

"We really believe this is the best model for all of Destiny 2's varied cooperative and competitive experiences," Segur said. "Engineering will always involve tradeoffs and cost-benefit analysis, but as a team we’ve got no regrets about the unique technology we’ve built for Destiny 2."

Destiny 2 is coming to PC, and with the peer-to-peer model, some might be concerned about cheating and other potential issues. Bungie acknowledged that PC as a platform come with "unique security challenges." But Bungie is confident that its security team is up to the task.

"Our security Ninjas have spent several years building a plan for how to engage with this new and vibrant community," Bungie said. "We have a variety of top-secret strategies to ensure that the life of a cheater in Destiny 2 PC will be nasty, brutish, and short. And, regardless of what platform you play on, all changes to your persistent character are communicated directly to our secure data center with no peer-to-peer interference."

Bungie believes that the frustrating moments where you might get shot through a wall or experience other glitches of that nature will be "reduced" for Destiny 2, but the studio can't say they will be completely eliminated, of course.

"Fundamentally, we are trying to strike a balance between three hard problems: (1) make the game feel responsive, (2) make the game accessible to players all over the world, and (3) make the game fair for all. We’ll continue to refine that balance as players engage with the Crucible in Destiny 2."

Fans can test Destiny 2's servers for themselves later this year, when the beta begins this summer. Players can send feedback to Bungie and the studio says it will adjust the game as needed.

The Destiny 2 beta is on track to start this summer, though a specific date has not been announced. We do know that people who preorder get in first.

The next big Destiny 2 reveal is coming up at E3 2017, so there is not much time to wait.

Their basic philosophy is flawed, that's the problem: "(2) make the game accessible to players all over the world." In other words, the top 95% of players with decent Internet connections will continue to be held hostage to the worst 5%. I'd be okay if Destiny had offline content, but it doesn't - this is an ONLINE game. If your Internet is crap, you shouldn't be allowed into the same matches as people with better connections.

I'm just incredibly happy that no-one fell for Bungie's nonsense. They basically haven't changed anything about their game or even really improved it's engine since Destiny 1.

All Destiny 2 seems to be is a cynical attempt to re-run the first 3 years of Destiny with a new audience of players who simply don't realise the lag filled, DDos'ing, cheat filled PvP experience they are in for or the glitch filled and laggy PvE experience they will enjoy.

As a shooter Destiny has few rivals but, the game doesn't stand up with that being it's sole good point. To then go and effectively make a carbon copy of Year 1 with a slightly larger set of patrol maps and some Skyrim style dungeons in the guise of "Lost Sectors" is laughable.

Destiny would probably replace my Borderlands addiction if only it were possible to play offline. Of all the things I would have wanted from a Destiny 2, offline single player was top of the list. Not asking for splitscreen co-op or LAN support - though, those features would be nice too - just option to play offline.

Here's hoping Borderlands 3 doesn't turn MMO.

Titanfall 2 looks great across platforms with rock solid 60fps. You too can do this if you give a shit. Scaling 1440-2160?

Because we and Activision are **** wads who don't give a shit about the fan/player base and as long as they buy the game and all the content that we slashed out of the game to sell as "DLC" that's fine with us. And since COD doesnt use them and never has why should Destiny 2????

Its' because your match making in D1 was turd and this will be too.

But isn't the P2P the very reason why the game has OBNOXIOUS amounts of loading/loadtimes ???

The load times are what drove me away. We clocked it, 1 hour = 35-40 of gameplay 20-25 minutes of loading. F THAT

@mushywaffle: no being P2P has nothing to do with load times. They are determined by how long it takes to load the art assets from disk and set them up. Networking would have very little if anything to do with that.

@BadAshJL: I was told the whole loading of ship in space and to the planet was obnoxious because it had to sync all the players. Since it isn't server based, syncing P2P adds much more time, you are susceptible to the poorest connecting.

Destiny 2 fps issues = PS4 Pro won't run 60 FPS at 4K okay, why not at 1080p? It's the PS4 holding the pro back, Because they both will be playing each other you can't have one doing 30 FPS and one doing 60 FPS. Bungie can say what ever it wants, If they released a title with those frame differences, it would be downright cheap for the people on 30 FPS.

@Popa2caps: Not really. PC gamers play against each other at vastly different fps and have been for years. Sure, the 60fps have a better experience, but I wouldn't necessarily call it cheap.

At some point, if the hardware devs are going to produce mid-cycle upgrades then they'll eventually have to accept frame rate difference as a means to justify purchasing an upgraded console.

It's not a long-term strategy to cap the new hardware to whatever restrictions exist for the older system.

@Greyfox-101: Here i'll share some logic for you simple minded people because i keep getting messages on the same topic, and yet they keep wishing. Read below

This is from Digital Foundry talking about Destiny 2
"Without intimate knowledge of Bungie's engine, it's difficult to say, but one thing is certain - it would probably cause more problems than it is worth. For a start, operating at 60fps on Pro while base hardware remains at 30fps would give Pro players a big, big advantage. The only way to maintain parity between players would be individual servers for base and Pro owners.

Based on basic logistics, carving up a console audience in this way, or bestowing one set of players with a huge advantage is highly unlikely to happen - something Microsoft's Shannon Loftis pointed out, saying that although developers have the choice, "as a developer I would bet no-one chooses different frame-rates for MP games ever."

And here is the tweet from Shannon Loftis https://twitter.com/shannonloftis/status/865977081045307392

And please don't compare a personal computer to a game console, it's silly. a PC could have any thing in it, Without stating the hardware you can't compare the two devices. And second consoles are regulated to be on par with each other so everyone is on the same level. PC is a open sandbox, it's not regulated. You make a PC you jump online, you don't know the person you are playing with, You don't know their hardware (unless you ask).

People stop dreaming, the only way you would be able to get Destiny 2 with 60 FPS is that they split the PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio to their own servers. Think about it also, you're bungie sitting their in a team meeting and you get 12 million sold on PS4 and you get 8 million sold on PS4 Pro, you really want the PS4 group to hate each other when there both the same brand of system?

@Popa2caps: Sounds like it could be an incentive to get gamers to actually buy the pro. As is there isn't any reason to adopt it. PlayStation should push devs to make the pro gameplay better even when its "unfair." Guess what? People would go buy the pro to be competitive. Duh...

@forester057: no, you got it wrong there. Business has nothing to do with only one side. There are many ways a console is used in a home, you only go for 1/4 of it the rest will leave for a new device.

You will never be able to explain how P2P is better than a dedicated server. Nice try.

@Zorlac: The infrastructure they describe is exactly how D1 works with the exception of now attempting to use some extra cloud servers. In D1 you have always had a connection to their servers. This is how they have been saving your character progress. Your PvP and PvE sessions (the action side of things not the scripting side) are all hosted on a Peer to Peer connection with the host regulating the action.

All Bungie have done is bring this fact to your attention in such a way that it makes you think they have somehow introduced dedicated server hosting. They haven't. They've just basically blown smoke into your eyes in the hope you don't manage get it out and see the truth before you've bought the collectors edition with season pass. You're locked in for a repeat ride of the first three years once you do and then it's a bit too late.

So if you kill a guy who's frozen on your screen due to your connection being crap, they'll just drop dead as soon as that data pings the server? This is gonna be really annoying I can already tell. Also this blows out of the water the digital foundry reasoning for no 60fps, they're just fucking lazy when it comes to the engine.

So it's basically a partial dedicated server with some p2p to make each player not notice their own cheep connection.

The real question is will we see their cheep connection. Cause that's what will cause the shooting through walls....

You should change the title because of all the ADD people that look at it and immediately post without reading. Everything that makes a "dedicated server" in a normal persons eyes is exactly what they use. They just don't call it that
