Why Hasn't There Been A GTA Or Red Dead Movie? Jack Black Wants To Know

Black believes those franchises are "already like movies," and that might explain why they haven't been spun into feature films yet.

Jack Black is surprised that there hasn't been a movie based on Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption so far, but there might actually be a good reason for that.

Speaking to Total Film, Black said, "I can't believe they haven't already started making a movie of any of the Rockstar Games--Grand Theft Auto, but especially Red Dead Redemption."

He said the GTA and Red Dead games are "already like movies," and that might explain why they haven't been adapted into feature films as of yet. "Some video games are already halfway there to telling those kind of stories, and there are some movies that are like video games," he said.

For what it's worth, Rockstar parent company Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick has said the company would want to fund a potential GTA or Red Dead movie itself to avoid a situation where some other entity might get to call the creative shots.

"Part of it is, if we were to do something like that, we'd want to have complete creative control to make sure we expressed [GTA] in the way we wanted--and that would mean we'd need to finance that motion picture," Zelnick said. "While we have the balance sheet to do it, we don't have the corporate expertise to do it, because only a handful of people inside Take-Two have ever worked in that business. I'm one of them. But that's not what we do for a living."

Zelnick has also reminded people that movies are by and large not a very profitable business. The Super Mario Bros. was a massive commercial success with over $1 billion at the box office, but Zelnick said more often than not, video game movies fail and money is lost.

Zelnick previously served as the president and chief operating officer of 20th Century Fox where he oversaw production and distribution of numerous movies. He was only 32 years old when he was running Fox's film business.

Take-Two has licensed a couple of its franchises for feature films already. The Rock starred in 2005's Doom and Mark Wahlberg played the lead in 2008's Max Payne movie. Both were panned critically and didn't make much money at the box office. Looking ahead, there is a star-studded Borderlands movie based on the 2K franchise coming this August and a BioShock movie in the works for Netflix.

Black went on to say that he sees a future where video games and movies merge more than before. He cited the interactive Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch as an example of this.

"I think we're moving in that way where there's going to be more combinations of video games and movies, and it's exciting. It's like the beginning of a new era," he said.

Black voiced Bowser in 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie and is playing Steve in the Minecraft movie. His next video game role is voicing Claptrap in the Borderlands film.

RDR movie made by Tarantino would've been spectacular, and Vice City could've been as good because its 80's setting is perfect for Tarantino style movies.

@nuclearwarfare: Sure do hate when someone thinks because they like something everyone else does.

He is not in the minority and is not wrong either. Helldivers 2 is garbage its peak players on steam reached nearly 600k. You know what Red deads highest player count was in history? 60k.

Pretty clear YOU are the one on the wrong side of history and the facts.

@gaeandilth: To say RDR games are bad is just dumb. Sure there are people that don’t like them, like anything else, but those games are universally acclaimed. Some regard RDR2 as a masterpiece. It’s ok to not like the game because the controls are bad or you find it boring, but to dismiss it entirely as trash? No no no.

Also RDR is unique in that it has a single player mode that people prefer to play over the online portion. I’ve never played this Helldivers game, but I’m assuming it’s online only? Keep up the good work, though.

@mogan: Helldivers was ok but really short. Within a few days you had everything and did the highest difficulty. Gameplay was ok. There was no game. Nothing about it makes sense to why it had such huge numbers.

And Red Dead was a very niche game. It is like BG3. Very small amount of players that really like it but most do not.

I thought Red dead was straight up garbage. Endless dialogue with garbage gameplay a 4 year old could beat. That is my opinion. But it is not a majority opinion. And neither is saying it was good.

I do not have a problem with others opinions. I have a problem with people that think their opinions are somehow more valid than others.

Big if true, but you sure can't tell from the reviews or the sales numbers.

@mogan: And BG3 sold well too. And both most people got robbed out of 60-70 bucks because they believed the hype and bought a garbage game.

The how many playing online a much better metric of a good game. And the sales excuse is weak anyway. McDonalds sells more hamburgers by far than anyone else in the world. But they are still garbage.

For example diablo 4 you would think was a good game based on sales. But if you seen the online activity and the MAJOR drop off every season you would realize it is garbage.

@gaeandilth: Diablo 4 does not have positive user reviews, BG3, Helldivers 2, and RDR2 very much do. Games that "robbed people out of 60-70 bucks" tend not to generate that kind of response. The available data does not support the idea that these games are niche or generally considered bad.

@mogan: Every game. Every single one is considered bad and good both. Depending on who you ask.

And like my Mcdonalds comment. They have great customer reviews too. Still does not mean they have good food.

You are confusing two words. Popular and good. Game can be popular and still suck. Game can be obscure and still be good.

But these games are not even close to what fanboys hype them up to be. Objectively speaking.

Why would there be? Their games are always based on movies.

RDR are super-generic westerns, so a movie would suck as much as the games did. But GTA's satire aspects could be fun.
