Why Microsoft Announced Two New Xbox Consoles at E3

"I wanted to give customers a view into what we were doing."

Microsoft announced two new Xbox devices at E3 this week. The Xbox One S launches in August, while the more powerful Project Scorpio comes out during holiday 2017. Some might have wondered why Microsoft elected to announce the further-out system now, more than a year before its release. There is also the thinking that, if consumers know a better Xbox console is coming, why buy an Xbox One or Xbox One S now?

Now, Microsoft's gaming boss Phil Spencer has provided an answer. Speaking on GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb's E3 livestream today, Spencer said he wanted to be as transparent as possible with consumers and developers alike.

Now Playing: Scorpio Announcement from Xbox Conference at E3 2016

"The reason we announced when we did--one is I wanted to give customers a view into what we were doing," Spencer said. "If they say I have an Xbox One now, I'm thinking about an Xbox One S, I want to be as transparent as I can be so they know they're buying with as much information as I can give them. I can't always give them all the information, but I want to give them this information.

"I want to talk about Scorpio so customers can feel like they have a view into what we were doing so they could make the decision that is right for them."

No Caption Provided

The Scorpio system is the most powerful console Microsoft has ever made, boasting six teraflops of performance. This comes out to four and half times as powerful as the existing Xbox One, Spencer said. Scorpio won't replace the Xbox One, or the Xbox One S, however, as games and peripherals for those systems will work on all Xbox devices.

Also in the interview, Spencer mentioned that it's not uncommon in the PC gaming world for a company to offer systems with different specs, something Microsoft appears to be following with its new console efforts.

"There's a logical question of, 'Hey, Phil, why would you ever announce two consoles at one show?' Why didn't you wait [and announce Scorpio later]? Clearly, other people made a decision to wait," he said, referencing Sony's decision not to show PlayStation Neo at E3. "Supporting multiple spec is something that the PC world has done for a long time; you've got minimum spec, recommended spec, unbounded spec."

Also in the interview, Spencer said Microsoft briefed developers on Scorpio "months and months ago." The existence of the system leaked, and Microsoft decided it would be better to talk openly about the console instead of refusing to acknowledge the existence of the system.

Sure, Phil. Now let's be honest. With PSVR and Neo on the horizon, Microsoft had to send a message to their fans to make them feel they're on the right side of the fence. That's exactly why they announced Scorpio so ahead of release. So that Xbox One owners could feel good about themselves and think "hey, glad I'm on Microsoft's side. Now I see a clear upgrade path and whenever I'm ready I'll transition to the most powerful console out there". It's the psychological part of the console wars. Now Sony doesn't hold the title of having the most powerful system anymore… potentially and psychologically at least.

@Triton: I would assume that you are asking a question even though you didn't put a question mark? Then yes ,I work at a Propane Co but I am studying in the wildlife branch of zoology (wildlife biologist) but I know a thing or two about tech. So I get to play a hour or two depending on the situation.

Also I'm having trouble posting it as a reply it keeps saying "This value is not a valid captcha" and "The CSRF token is invalid. Please try to resubmit the form." So I will try as new.

This will be my only reply.

@sciguy93: iv been having the same issues with csrf - also ""slow down your acting like a bot"". have to wait a few seconds before retrying.

in all honesty since the upgrade of windows 10 iv had many issues with the web - ign the text box dosnt respond to typing, the link to post pics not working. when typing emails on msn or icloud the page would spontaneously reload and have to start over.- all websites reload themselves spontaneously, the most annoying when typing a red line will start following under the words, I know I'm a bad speller but not that bad.all in all since the upgrade to 10 many bugs and issues more so on the net and many on this website. windows 10 sucks.

I think From a financial stand point ,its a waste of money to buy the XS especially if the consumer recently bought a X1 and not to mention a "so called" upgraded X1 Scorpio that is mostly made for 4K Resolution TV's and not standard or HDTVs. And before YOU reply ,this opinion is for people who work for a living, pay's bills and doesn't keep up with this new generation's trends.

I'll trade in and purchase an Xbox One S. It makes some sense from a business standpoint. Once the Xbox S comes out the older One will depreciate in value. In turn when I go to trade in for a Scorpio a year and a half from now. The S will be worth more and I can get more in trade in. At least that is my thought process. I spent 1k on one of the higher end Vizio 4k's. I would get use out of the video features until I could actually play games in 4k on it. Just my two cents.

I really think it'd be better if the S specs matches the Scorpio cause with the fact that Xbox one og specs can't handle heavy games in split screen mode I really find the Xbox one S pointless in this scenario like playing at friends house.

Aye.. I don't really like having multiple versions of consoles. I understand the reasoning though. But my will has been broken lol. I'm just an old gamer.... when there were 5-8 years or so between consoles, so I knew when I bought one (well, when my parents bought one for me at that age lol) I was all set for a while. With technology constantly improving, spending $500 will only get you 3 years or so before you start to feel obsolete. . It's pretty crazy to think about though.. I bought mine within the first few weeks of release (11/13) , and bettwen '13 and '17:

- X1, 500 GB, Kinect

- X1, 500 GB, no Kinect

- X1 S, 2 TB

- X1 Scorpio, 2 TB, 4K, HDR, 4.5x as powerful

Almost yearly upgrades/changes

@bandit7319: They are following graphic cards and phones. Just buy be happy you made the best decision at the time and never look back. Wait until you buy a new car and 3 years later you see all the improvements made to the new model - that really hurts. :-)

Xbox one S is the expected Xbox one slimline revision that everyone knew would arrive at some point. Since the original Xbox one console was the largest console, Xboxes have always been large but this did turn off some people from buying Xbox one. So a slim version was needed.

Project scorpio is a successor to Xbox one. If VR gaming really takes off in the following years, MS will be ready with project scorpio. Plus when 4K televisions become mainstream them Microsoft is ready with project scorpio.

I'm thinking of giving MS another chance, my LG UF9500 4K '65 inch are sitting idle. Although my PS4 games and my PC connected to it gives a great boost in contrast I'm sure many of us would want a true 4K gaming other than PC. I look forward to Project Scorpio and NEO. Whichever delivers true 4K gaming will get my cold hard cash!

here is why there were 2 xbox announced:

" i wanted to copied sony, and bring whatever sony give to their customer, to our customer too. we will always copied sony, whatever they do. We copied cross buy, agumented reality, streaming games from console to device, bluray, and now we copied their decision to upgrade ps4 hardware."

@xbhonner: And the fact that PS4 Neo was not talked about is a sure thing Sony is going up the ante on the Neo to outperform the Xbox One S. Typical Sony, wait until everyone announces their stuff and adjust the projects to make them sound better.

@xbhonner: You are so naive that is almost cute. Sony did not start VR to start with. But if we talk about coping, most people agree that PS4 followed the 360 instruction book to the letter. Parties, achievements, online playing, digital games were all first on xbox before PS. There is so much. The point is, everybody copy something from somebody else.

@Aleperez75: errr parties? whaddya mean? achiements was invented by Activision in the 80's, ps2 has online game earlier than original xbox, buying games online was first on intellivision. The point is, m$ never invented/innovate anything in gaming

It was a solid move on their part. Give the people with an X1 full knowledge of what's coming so they don't run out and grab the S for nearly no reason, but still have the S available for those who've been on the fence or were waiting for something like this in the first place. Might not be the most lucrative move in the short term, but building trust with their user base is both more important and more lucrative in the long term.

@thatactuallyguy: the slim cost alittle more then the base x box - if you don't have 4k/ hdr tv then the s is extra money wasted when the base console will do for less. and then if its a first buy have to pay the extra 50 for a Kinect dongle thingy when the port should have been included in the first place - regardless if the Kinect was popular or not they wanted the Kinect they should have kept the port included , nope more ways to squeeze extra doller out the customer.......

Yes,that makes sense afterall.
Just imagine you just bought a S modell for $400 and next year MS announces the Scorpio(i guess for $500)...i would be pissed off and you too.
It would be like "WTF,i just bought a X1s and they announce a 4K gaming console? I could have waited with the purchase"

@sladakrobot: Can say that anyways. The generation is less than 3 years old. I just got an Xbox One a few months ago (and according to their spike in sales, a lot of people did last Fall). So it really doesn't matter.

He keeps saying PC... does he not realize he's talking to console gamers? A year launched between 2 systems seems really quick. Guess I would of announced that scorpio is in the works, but not give a release date. That way people may still buy the xbox one s. But I guess being truthful is nice for a change, just sometimes not saying anything is a better business approach.

For people saying they don't have 4k yet, you can get a 4k tv right now off amazon and bestbuy for around 379-600 right now. They got very cheap. I'm hopefully buying a 4k tv sometime either this weekend or next week.

Hey man, just be mindful of refresh rates and image lag. You don't want to have too much lag on the image. This is very important for gaming, multiplayer mostly, so be mindful of this.

I was at the conference and the reveals make perfect sense to me. Besides having varying specs at varying price points, which does appeal to lots of people (I talked to a lot of fans and no one was mad about it) the entire thing is to rebrand their line, shake the negativity from the launch and the low powered stigma that Sony PR firmly hammered home all this gen.

Contrary to what ppl here say, there's still plenty of ppl that are on the fence about buying an Xbox for the good games they have coming up. Silently there's s ton of former Xbox owners that went PS4 this gen, primarily because of the launch debacle, compounded by the lower power.

The S model with a 4K disc player will easily push people in the market to buy one over the edge. 4K tvs are affordable now and plenty of them will sell this holiday. Why not get people to throw an S under the tree too?

The Scorpio is still a good ways away and you don't necessarily have to have one to enjoy your S. The Scorpios primary install base will be the people like me that bought the launch X1 or people that want a higher end console (like people on the fence about building a gaming rig) plus all the flip flopping fanboys that just chase specs.

To me this just showed MS can take one on the chin, regroup and get their stuff together. Everyone knew MS wouldn't make the same underpowered mistake twice but they really caught Sony with their pants down with this.

At E3 Sony's big push had been PSVR. More than half of their show space is dedicated to PSVR. And even if fanboys don't want to admit it, the Neo's primary purpose was to help improve the experience of those who are getting it.

Neo had to be really close to being put into production. They needed it out to coincide with PSVRs launch. So now they either have to cancel to respec it and delay PSVRs launch which I doubt they will do, or they launch the lesser powered system and start working on a monster PS5 to out spec Scorpio. Either way, it forced them to fold their hand to the point to where they didn't even bring it to E3.

Sony thoroughly understands the PR power of having the more powerful system, they used it as marketing spin every chance they got with the PS4. It's the entire reason they won this gen.

Now that the power spin has changed hands let's see how Sony responds.

and beside ms has help sonys tv department ..... also lg, Samsung and various other 4k tvs ..... they didn't force there hand not to bring the neo they stated long before it wouldn't be shown so they didn't like just pull it at the last minute, it was never there ....... and also sony never confirmed the neos specs... internet websites like this and comments and rumors are filling in the blanks ........

and besides :-

x box one

x box one slim with 4k video playback

x box scorpio with 4k gaming

ps4

ps4 neo with 4k video playback

ps4 <insert project codename> with 4k gaming

...... 365 days till holiday 2017 lots of time to see what sony - if they do - bring anything ...........

Anyone else remember Phil kind of talking smack about Sony fracturing the user base with multiple consoles; then waxing about PC extensibility, expandability, and ability to upgrade; and then dismissing it all as poor business strategy and bad for the consumer... ? I think it was within the last three months and it was a Makuch article too if memory serves.

@satsubatsu347: Nope and if you got that from any of the articles (even a Makuch slanted one) I suggest you take some reading comprehension classes. What he said was he wasn't fond of a .5 increment upgrade for the system and if they did it they'd go big (which they obviously have). He also said he wasn't going to release a system that required you to get out a screwdriver in order to put in upgrades in essence. And not once did he mention SONY in any of those comments.
