Why Overwatch 2 Requires A Phone Number To Play

The new requirement has left some players scratching their heads, but Blizzard says it took the decision "really seriously."

Overwatch 2 is now live, and some players diving in will be surprised to learn that they are required to link a phone number to their Battle.net account in order to play. This new requirement wasn't fully explained when it was first announced, but more recently, Blizzard provided more of the background on why the new SMS Protect requirement has been deemed necessary: cheaters.

All Overwatch 2 players, even ones who had purchased the original Overwatch and those playing on consoles, will need to link a phone number to their Battle.net account in order to play. The same phone number can't be used for multiple accounts, and Blizzard won't accept pre-paid and VOIP numbers.

Now Playing: Overwatch 2 Launch Trailer

In a recent interview with Forbes, Blizzard explained that the change is to prevent bad actors from being able to use cheats and cycle through multiple additional accounts that all share the same phone number. Previously, the box price of Overwatch served as a cost when it came to players being banned and needing to create a new account. Now that the game is going free to play, the barrier to entry is much lower, and so Blizzard needed some other solution.

"We pretty actively are trying to detect and find users who have anomalous gameplay, with standout gameplay behavior, or are detected by the cheat fingerprints that we might make," Overwatch 2 lead software engineer Bill Warnecke said. "But if that player gets that account banned and is able to immediately just rejoin with a new account, then all of the detection in the world won't stop us from keeping bad actors out of the game. We need to make the cost for being willing to cheat a little bit higher for those players. Losing an account in Overwatch 2 is a much more significant penalty than it was in Overwatch 1."

Warnecke did say that there will be cases of "good" players with no bad intentions who have multiple accounts being negatively impacted by the phone number requirement, which was something that Blizzard "took very seriously." However, at the end of the day it was decided that being able to more effectively combat bad actors took priority over legitimate players who play on multiple accounts.

Blizzard recently detailed its "Defense Matrix Initiative", which includes SMS Protect but also outlines how onboarding will work for new Overwatch 2 players. That onboarding process, called the First Time User Experience, will see new players gradually unlocking modes and heroes over the course of playing 100 matches. Blizzard said the First Time User Experience will also help to identify bad actors, as it will take time for new accounts made by cheaters to unlock additional heroes and the game's competitive playlist, giving Blizzard more time to identify and ban them before they become too disruptive.

Overwatch 2 sees a number of big changes from the original multiplayer shooter. In addition to being free to play, Overwatch 2 ditches loot boxes in favor of a battle pass system. It also requires existing players to unlock new heroes (excluding Junker Queen, Sojourn, and Kiriko) either through purchasing the game's premium battle pass or grinding out the game's free battle pass, a change that has upset many in the Overwatch community. I tried installing the game today, saw that it required a cell phone, lamented the fact that I'm behind on my bill, then closed Battle.net. I'm sorry I'm broke and just wanted to play the free to play game, also found out that Overwatch 1 literally disappeared overnight. So, I can't play the game I bought years ago and I need a phone # (personal info) attached to my account to try it's replacement.................... This really is "You guys don't have cell phones?" all over again, what the **** Blizzard?

PS: I can't write out phone and #, if Gamespot is aware of spambots trying to get phone #s and will literally PREVENT you from writing out those 2 words, why the hell would Blizzard try to force us to give it to them? I value my privacy and that shit is honestly egregious. If you guys like bending over, just say that, but don't pretend shit like this is normal. "You need a working cell phone that can text to play this game, **** everyone else", what in the **** man.

It's 2022. I need a phone to bank, to use MS word, to work, to do all kinds of necessary stuff. This isn't necessary. Deal.

Well, I guess there goes any chance of playing this now "free" game with my kids. They don't have cell phones, and they won't be getting them either. I even payed for the first version too, guess I supported the wrong company. I'd rather it just be a paid game than this garbage. Wonder if my cell number will even work since it's through my cable company. Not even supporting pre-paid phones is about as elitist as they come. This whole "if you don't have a phone you can't participate in society" crap has got to stop.

This is the dumbest thing, how are they gonna know if it's legitimate or paid phone in other countries? Many Central and South American players will be in NA servers for example, and EU is a huge salad, there's no way they can verify this info, so the system is useless, therefore they only want info of NA users.

@Chupert: What are you going on about? A cell number is a cell number, they don't really care where you're from when they sell it to a telemarketer.

We didn't want bad actors to kill our game, so we decided to kill it ourselves!

Took the decision 'very seriously'.

You aren't fooling anyone, Blizzard. You're going to be selling those numbers off like any other corporate entity does. I'll take my decision to avoid this game 'very seriously' as a result.

Wow, yet another reason to never play a blizzard game again. I would never, ever give my number to this company to play a "free to play" game.

I get why people don't like this but anybody who still loves and plays OW knows this is a necessary evil.

Rampant Smurf accounts have ruined and I mean absolutely ruined this game. So if this gets rid of those clowns I'll gladly comply.

LOL No. Not even going to bother installing it.

Valorant seems fun. May finally be time to check it out.

Can't say it is a bad reason. But I wonder what ToS says about what they can do with your such sensitive data.

@mcnichoj: Absolutely -- it's the one thing that can't be tracked via simple cookies and tracker files. So the moment you opt-in with it, now they have all three points of unique data needed to associate you across your entire life, without even buying it. (Phone, payment info, and browser/app files).

Worse, it makes SWATting SO much easier once that data gets compromised.

($10 / month for a mailbox at a shipping store, for ALL accounts everywhere, is just that much more valuable...)

Not that I give a shit about playing the game because I won't, but they had this in CoD Warzone and I couldn't play it because it didn't like my number... and they want you to submit photo ID or something like that to even open a support ticket to get assistance when you don't have an account. I wonder if this will be as disastrous for some people.

Wow. They actually lock out everyone who doesn't have a mobile contract from playing their game? Blizzard sure seems obsessed with preventing cheating if they're going that far. But I get the feeling they'll get rid of that requirement soon once they realize how much it hurts player numbers.
