Why Square Enix Is Making a Thief Movie

"We have always been passionate about telling stories and bringing them to different mediums."

Following the news that Square Enix's Thief franchise would be making the leap to the big-screen, developer Eidos-Montreal has now shared more details on the project. Studio head David Anfossi said in a statement that it is his hope that a Thief feature film will help grow the profile of the overall franchise.

No Caption Provided

"We have always been passionate about telling stories and bringing them to different mediums," Anfossi said. "With the intricate world of Thief being made into a feature film, a larger audience will be able to dive into this universe."

For its part, Blizzard has also said the Warcraft movie may help the franchise reach more people, while the Borderlands film is hoping to do the same.

The Thief movie rights were recently acquired by Los Angeles-based production company Straight Up Films. The movie will be produced by Roy Lee (The Departed, The Lego Movie) and Adrian Askarieh (Hitman, Hitman: Agent 47). Fans of the game franchise may be happy to learn that Eidos-Montreal will also have a hand in producing the film.

Adam Mason and Simon Boyes (Misconduct, Not Safe for Work)are writing the screenplay. Like the game, the movie will be set in a "dark fantasy world where a master thief tries to restore freedom, which has been denied by a magic-wielding tyrant."

There are no details at this stage about a cast, director, or release date, but we will have that information for you as it's divulged.

The Thief franchise was created by Looking Glass Studios, and the first installment was 1998's Thief: The Dark Project. Two sequels followed in the 2000s, while the most recent entry in the series was 2014's Thief.

All of the great IPs that Square-Enix has at their disposal, and they choose to make a movie out of Thief? Thief?! Why would they think that a Thief movie has the slightest possibility of succeeding? I know they want to shore up their Thief franchise, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter what the company wants, it's what their customers want, and nobody was clamoring for a Thief movie. This has fail written all over it.

(Sigh) Crono, Marle, and Lucca are chomping at the bit to get out there and show the world how a video-game story could work as a film, and Square-Enix just keeps them shackled in a back room, completely neglected. They should just sell the rights to Chrono to Disney if they aren't going to do anything with it themselves. Disney, at least, might understand the cinematic potential of the franchise.

@JRLennis Agreed. If they made it based on the lore of the first three, MAYBE... but still it would be considered a knockoff of Assassin's Creed or something. Might as well have Uwe Boll direct it.

The new thief was the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull of the thief series. It was so violating of the original source material, so foreign, that I wasn't even angry when finished the tedious, uninspired experience. It's simply not a Thief game. This is a sad attempt to get people interested in franchise that had its gameplay, world building, and storytelling gutted to try for "mass appeal"

The fact that these numbnuts think Thief can be turned into a movie confirms that they have no idea what this franchise is actually all about and what made it great before they got their greedy hands on it. I expected no less after the atrocity of the last game. Pandering to brain dead millennials is slowly killing all forms of creative expression.

The should focus on getting a developer that makes a new thief game that doesn't suck before they turn it into a mediocre movie.

Tbh if game companies want to make movies they should stick to cgi movies. I find them more interesting and truer to the original source.

Instead of making a game which doesnt suck they rather advertise a shitty game with a shitty movie. There should be laws against the rape of franchises.

I found the last Thief game so lacking.

Dishonored was so much better.

Give me a break. There's only one reason a company wants to do anything : they think they can drive revenue with it and rake in some profit. All other concerns, no matter how noble, are secondary.

Thief wouldn't translate well to the big screen, who wants to see a frail guy hiding in the shadows to steal some loot. But then they would turn him into a ninja assassin of course. There are other LG greats that would work better, like Terra Nova or System Shock.

@jj2112: Thief is a pretty hard franchise to mainstream-ify, because it relies heavily on stealth and stealing people's stuff. There's no gentleman/charming thief or heist-with-cool-guys as in Ocean's Eleven. Garrett sucks at combat, the best he can do is shoot people with arrows or backstab/cudgel them. Thief is a niche and hardcore franchise and that's why so many people love it (at least the older games). It certainly has enough backstory to make a movie, but I doubt it'll widen its appeal.

A more polished game than the last one would too help the franchise appeal to a greater audience. Man that was a rough one.

Long live Thief's original trilogy: 1-3

No I don't want a Thief movie. Not unless it is animated, made by the creators of the original games (especially 1-2) - and features Stephane Russell as Garret's voice actor! !!

If they made a movie based on the first game it would be great, just great. Burricks, hammers and all. Of course they won't do that and the movie will suck more than the last game

The first two Thief games are still among my favorite games of all time... I just hope Eidos Montreal doesn't continue to befoul the great memories with their version of 'Teef"

@thermalmotion: Honestly, even the 3rd game was great. But I agree, if it's based on the "reboot", we will be in for a wild, unforgiving ride...

@_plaguelight_: Yeah, it had a few problems with it, but it was decent; I liked it anyways. And it was definitely a Thief game.

I came to voice my displeasure, but am happy to see so many already have. It is very pleasing to see there are still a lot of supporters of the original (and superior) games.

Make a FF movie. Not an animated one but with real actors. Why Thief? Who is seriously going to "dive in" to this thing?

Or you could just not make a shitty Thief game and then try to make a movie to make up for how fucking terrible the game was and likely is a precursor to how terrible the movie will be.

@dannydouble: That is an ignorant statement. Thief 1 and 2 are THE BEST games ever made, are THE most advanced games ever made in term of gameplay and atmoshpere, not graphic nor any other technical detail, but god damn gameplay. Watch this and get educated for a while: "/watch?v=MZUQinN_9tM"

Something made for good video game so will make for good movie is a line of thinking without a logical foundation. Sony entertainment division has been on a losing streak for a long time now.

Game based movies normally cash in on success and brand name where as "Thief" is not part of current game culture and has not been for some time. Flogging a dead horse here unless this movie is uncommonly good which would be a huge shock. The only plus side to doing this is that there is no fan base to piss off so you get a free reign to do pretty much what you want. Maybe they found an screenplay that they thought hay this is good and it is kind of the right genre, why don't we slap the thief brand name on it?

What's with these guys...? If anything the Hitman movies made people turn their nose up at a game with the same name... and the last Thief game was a pathetic entry in a legendary stealth franchise. Crap movies don't sell good games, and crappy movies definitely don't sell crappy games... so maybe just focus on making your games the best they can be...? Or blow over a hundred million on another generic Hollywood flop... either or I guess!

Weird. The original games were really good.

I hear the new one isn't great so I never played it. Maybe that's the actual problem.

Make the game not suck! Bam! Wider audience! You know what's not fun? Navigating maze-like city streets looking for that one magic window you have to open by mashing a button EVERY TIME to get to the other maze-like city street which may or may not contain your objective.
