Why That Stranger Things 2 Death Was Such A Slap In The Face

Will the injustices ever end?

Spoilers for Stranger Things 2 below

The original season of Stranger Things hit a near-perfect balance between whimsy and danger. Yes, it starred a bunch of kids, and at times its vibe verged on E.T. territory. But there were key moments that communicated to the audience: The stakes are higher here. Barb's disappearance was one of those moments.

It wasn't until we learned of Barb's death toward the season's end that fans on the internet became inflamed and started the viral #JusticeForBarb movement. But even before that, Barb's capture made it clear that no one in Hawkins, Indiana was safe. It wasn't just Will who was in danger, and the Demogorgon could take anyone next while it continued to hunt.

In Stranger Things 2, Bob's death served no such purpose. It was just a gut punch, an emotional body check, a proverbial slap in the face. It sucked.

I'm not saying Barb needed to die. I'm saying her disappearance and death served a purpose--multiple purposes, in fact. In Season 1, it raised the stakes, demonstrating the no one was safe. And throughout Season 2, Barb's death provided the catalyst for multiple connected storylines. It drove a wedge between Nancy and Steve, making room for her relationship with Jonathan (another plot sure to cause debate among fans). And it pushed Nancy, eventually with Jonathan's help, to work to expose the clandestine government operations that got Barb killed in the first place.

All of that is just plain good writing. We didn't like seeing Barb go, but her death sent ripples of repercussions spiraling outward through the rest of the story. Stranger Things' most incensed fans got their wish--justice for Barb--driven by Nancy's guilt over what happened to her friend and what her parents were going through. It was the natural way for the story to go following that traumatic event.

Can the same be said for Bob's death? What purpose did it serve within the story? There are a couple of arguments to be made here, on either side of the debate.

No Caption Provided

On one hand, Bob seemed set up to die. He was way too nice to exist for long in this world of government conspiracies, interdimensional portals, and predatory Dungeons & Dragons monsters. Bob got the short end in life, bullied throughout high school (by Hopper, it seems, as the chief can't stop referring to Bob by his residual nickname). Now he has a decent job that he enjoys, and he "gets to date Joyce Byers"--the cool girl when they were in school, who never gave him the time of day. Bob was the nerd--just like Barb. The similarity in their names even seems like a deliberate nod on the writers' parts to the inevitable #JusticeForBob movement.

What does it say about Stranger Things that the show has made a habit of killing its most socially marginalized characters? Is it a survival-of-the-fittest commentary? Is it a message about working together across petty social boundaries? Is it just a coincidence, because these two characters were simply the easiest to kill? And is that good writing?

There's another side, though: Did Bob's death serve any purpose within the larger story? At first I thought it didn't, but after watching again I realized I was wrong. Bob's death did serve a purpose: It helped push Joyce to the extreme emotional state necessary for her to take the drastic measures she needed to. Joyce, whose intense love of her son pushed her to similar extremes throughout Season 1, was faced with a potentially impassable obstacle in Season 2: Her son Will was, suddenly, the enemy himself.

Will's life hung in the balance throughout the second half of Season 2, and a Joyce who hadn't been shocked into a state of pure desperation would have found it much more difficult to do what she had to do. Will's interrogation and the subsequent exorcism had a real chance of killing the boy, but Bob's death spurred Joyce on whenever she started to question what she was doing--as demonstrated by her flashes of memories with Bob during the climactic scenes in the finale.

No Caption Provided

You could argue that Bob didn't need to die for Joyce to reach that state. Even before Bob's death, she'd started jamming syringes into her son, knocking him out with barely a second thought--spurred by his lapse in memory when asked if he remembered her. That could have been enough: If Will didn't even remember his own mother, he may have been too far gone already, a thought that clearly wasn't lost on Joyce.

And Bob certainly didn't need to die like that. Episode 8, "The Mind Flayer," was basically a horror movie, and in typical horror fashion Bob went out just at the moment he finally seemed safe. It felt a little cheap, if we're being honest. The prolonged shot of his glassy-eyed stare only added insult.

So was Bob's death a pointless shocker, or did it provide the catalyst for the climax? Either position is valid, but there's one larger point to make: Stranger Things needs to kill a main character next, or fans will learn not to get too attached to any new ones who might be introduced in future seasons. And then we'd basically be watching The Walking Dead, which I don't believe anyone wants.

First, saying that someone died in Stranger Things is not a spoiler. People die, duh. It's Stranger Things. Second, I am sad by Bob's death too, and while not necessary, he at least went out a hero. Bob saved everyone and while I would have liked Bob to live, better him than one of the leads or Max. RIP Bob.

Dear Mr Michael Rogeau, what was your reason to ruin everyone's fun ? I suppose you are a professional and you understand that a warning saying "SPOILERS BELOW" does not cover the HEADLINE, right ?...... you just spoiled me Stranger Things 2 without any good reason adding a quite shocking development to the main HEADLINE of the note ! THE HEADLINE !!!!!!!!!! I don't know what was on your mind when you wrote this, but after waiting for almost a year for the second season, and being watching 1 episode per day without rushing, you just screw me.... I can't explain really how SAD you made me, I love this show, one of the only one's I really enjoy and I stay away from reviews, etc. to avoid this and you manage to ruin it for me.... with a HEADLINE, what kind of writer are you ?

Thanks GAMESPOT for letting your ppl ruin everyone's TV Shows and Movies ! You are supposed to give NEWS and REVIEWS, not SPOILERS !!!! It's not enough that your reviews of AAA games are usually.... not fair, now you also spoil things... Thanks from Argentina ! Removing Gamespot from my RSS, there's no coming back from what you just did.

Michael Rougeau ! THANK YOUUUUUUUUU !

Recoverd my account to ask whose stupid idea it was to post a major spoiler on your main page for a 9 hour show which has been out a few days.not everyone has as much free time as you guys.you could of easily put something like "lets discuss the ending spoiler alert".what's the incentive to come back to your site when we have no idea if our favourite tv shows are going to be spoiled on the main page of a gaming site. gezz what an idiot who ever came up with that tittle.

@walbo:

Why That Stranger Things 2 Death Was Such A Slap In The Face" ?

If that spoils you then stay of the fucking internet. I mean unless they changed it from including the character name. We all know at least someone is going to die in shows like this.

@Dickyslamm: fucking hell I forgot how childish this place is haha.by your logic nobody should use the internet if they are watching any sort of tv show.it's not a new or hard concept to grasp as there is an article on this very site right now that reads best moments in season 2 of stranger things (spoiler alert).all sites and reputable journalists do this so excuse me for thinking this wouldint happen on a gaming site.social media yes any gaming or movie site no.

Had to hurry up and finish tonight. GS has been trying to ruin season 2 for me since Netflix released it a couple of days ago. This website is not managed by anyone with a conscience or journalistic integrity.

And this is why I enjoy things...alone. Other people ruin things with their "communities" and "outcries online". Social Media flat out ruins the enjoyment of things with the over-obsession and fandom. This article, and it's "reasoning", proves my point.

I'm really not a fan of this whole "death needs to serve a purpose" in writing. Death is a random thing, it doesn't need a silver lining. The fact that we cared when Bob died shows that its good writing.

Barb and Bob? I think there's a pattern here...

Look out for a new character whose name begins with a B and ends with another b.

I was like, "wow Bob's dead? Maybe they can work him back in… oh, never mind. He's the only dead guy in a building full of dead guys being eaten by a horde of demo-dogs." He's completely dead.

A major theme in this season was the desire to reclaim a sense of normalcy in the characters lives and Bob represents just that for Joyce but that’s not in the cards after the events of season one therefore, Bob had to go.

All of you seem to forgot the fact that Bob set everything in motion. He was the dumb one pushing Will to comfort the shadow monster and tell him to get away. Will was escaping him finely till Bob said that. So he had it coming. Karma.

@chakkale: I wouldn't call it "karma" per se. His advice was sound advice, the mature thing to do. But Bob didn't know these things were real, he thought it was just natural childhood fears. This was all new to him.

@Fartman7998: It was a perfect example that adults thinking they know best when this show is totally against that stereotype. Maybe if Bob was that clever, he should have understood that these are not typical nightmares by watching people acting weird around him. And then he wouldn't throw an advice about a thing that he really doesn't get. He isn't a f**kin psychiatrist or a pediatrician. He just did it to get closer to Joyce. He even bragged about it to Joyce thinking that he is connecting with Will...

@carlgrimes:I agree, I don't want Stranger Things to be "that" kind of show. The kids are the best part, it needs to stay fun. Also I can't see one of the boys dying because we barely got to see them interact with Will in season 1 and then Season 2 Mike, Lucas, Dustin, the entire cast for that matter are trying to acclimate to Will being back and being different. That situation in itself is unlike anything we've seen in recent shows, having a pivotal character "die" and come back to life.

Why even compare it to the Walking Dead. It doesn't need death to make it more heart wrenching. The characters have already been through that. Maybe the reason Bob needed to die is because Joyce needed to lose someone for real and it could not be Will. She wouldn't have survived Will's death.

Here's the thing that bugged me about Bob's death: the domodogs ate his corpse. They didn't just kill him, they all got together and feasted on his corpse. They didn't eat ANYONE else in that building. If they were killing just to kill, then it makes sense for Bob to die. If they were killing for food, then no more than like 7 people should've died, because then the domodogs would've just sat around eating them while everyone else ran away. A pack of lions doesn't kill the whole herd or zebras, just one or two to keep them sated for the day.

@drnknnmd: Well, they don't kill for food, they were/are commanded by the "Shadow Beast", and I can imagine Bob got the worst death because the "Shadow Beast" is very angry at him, because he just saved the main characters?

His death did server a purpose. Did these writers watch the whole thing?

Joyce wouldn’t have turned the heat up and bypassed her worries for her son to eject the shadow demon from his body. She wanted vengeance for bob.

I actually kind of like that we haven't lost any of the main kids. I get my "no one is safe" fix in a handful of other shows, and my favorites have died or have changed irreparably in those shows that they may as well have died.

I just hope if they do decide to axe one of the 4 boys, I really hope they don't spare a character just because they are popular. I really do not want any of the kids to die though. This doesn't have to be "that" kind of show. This has a very "spielberg" feel for me. I kind of want it to stay that way. The show is fun. It needs to stick to that.

...and people need to get over Barb.

@mrougeau: Hopper? Maybe in season 4, but it's definitely too soon right now. I totally thought Steve was going to die though. "I promised Nancy I would keep you guys safe!" That line made me think he would die keeping his promise, and it would have been a great ending for that character. Unfortunately, it looks like we'll have to sit through the Jonathan-Nancy-Steve triangle for another season.

@mrougeau: ah, that is a good idea. I love him, but if you were to remove him that would take away the main line of defence the kids and the Hawkins community has to the scientists and the alternate dimension. It could also expose Eleven.

I kind of agree, I had similar thoughts. I loved seeing Sean Astin again, but didn't like that his character was so short-lived. Joyce Byers deserved Bob after what she'd been through, and now it seems like they've set her up to either be single or end up with Hopper. If you ask me, I would have killed off Max's stepbrother, or someone else in general. But I saw Bob's death coming, so him barely surviving would have been much more satisfying.

Bob Newby, superhero. =(
