Why We Don't Need Another Matrix Sequel (Opinion)

The Matrix 4 is officially happening. Here's why it shouldn't.

The Matrix 4 is officially happening. As illicit set videos begin to emerge from all over San Francisco, we can't help but wonder whether this should be happening at all, even with Lana Wachowski, Keanu Reeves, and Carrie-Anne Moss all set to return to the series. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

It's 2019, and the question "What is the Matrix?" was answered long ago. Nevertheless, as we recently learned, The Matrix 4 is officially happening--whether or not it's needed.

Now Playing: The Matrix Explained | 20th Anniversary Of The Matrix

I love the Matrix as much as anybody--more than most people, in fact. When I first watched the cyberpunk thriller at the impressionable age of 11, it pretty much blew my mind--I had to watch it at least a half dozen times before I was able to understand the concept that our reality is a computer simulation. But my friends and I, to this day, maintain a running joke that the sequels don't exist. If someone brings up The Matrix Reloaded or The Matrix Revolutions, we look quizzically at one another as if we've never heard of them. "What sequels?" "It's too bad that movie never got any sequels." Etc.

It maybe isn't a great joke, but it serves as more than that. It's a defense mechanism. I'd rather live in a world in which The Matrix 2 and 3 don't exist. Like the original movie's duplicitous but kinda-has-a-point betrayer Cypher, I believe that in this case, "ignorance is bliss." Cue the harp.

The Matrix sequels are bad. You may have enjoyed them at the time, and you may even still enjoy them. They had their moments--the million-Smiths fight was conceptually cool, despite being marred by bad CGI, and Reloaded's freeway chase is an action highlight. But as far as the cultural zeitgeist is concerned, The Matrix 2 and 3 failed to live up to the original on almost every level. Regardless of your personal feelings about them, they've gone down in history as massive disappointments, despite the fact that they made a ton of money (which is why, decades later, we're in this current pickle).

The Matrix doesn't need another sequel, because The Matrix didn't benefit from the sequels we already got. The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions added little of value to the series, and in fact, they arguably made the original worse by association--the fact that a story with that much setup and promise wound up concluding with a hackneyed Christ metaphor and mediocre CGI might temper your enjoyment of the original, even if, like me, you like to pretend it's a standalone film. Whenever I watch the first Matrix--which is frequently--I have to continuously shush the grating voice in the back of my head whispering "Remember how bad these sequels were?"

Lana Wachowski's involvement isn't reassuring. Normally, when a new sequel to a beloved movie is announced, it's taken as a good sign if the original creators are still at the helm. The Matrix is an exception to that rule. The Matrix wasn't quite a fluke; The Wachowskis have been responsible for a couple of other bangers, including the 2005 V For Vendetta adaptation (they wrote and produced, but didn't direct), and 2008's Speed Racer (Wachowskis-written, produced, and directed), which some people liked. But the duo was also responsible for colossal turds like Jupiter Ascending, Cloud Atlas, and, of course, the Matrix sequels.

I think it's fair to compare the Wachowskis' work to M. Night Shyamalan's: They've made some classics, and they might have more in them, but they're not exactly a safe bet, especially considering that most of their successes occurred early in their careers. George Lucas is another fair comparison: Yes, they created something amazing, a franchise with a life of its own that's far bigger than a single movie. But they also failed considerably when trying to expand on the world they had created.

No Caption Provided

The fact that Lana Wachowski is set to return to writing and directing duties for The Matrix 4 makes me less hopeful, not more, for this movie. As a diehard fan of the original Matrix and an equally diehard hater of the sequels, I wish the movie that started it all could simply stand on its own. Contrary to popular belief, the most interesting thing about the original Matrix wasn't the "bullet time" action or the leather trenchcoats, but the restrained worldbuilding and the subtext-filled writing--writing for which the Wachowskis deserve full credit, but which they failed to live up to in subsequent attempts. If the franchise, such as it is, needs to have a future, the best way to do it would be to drop the known characters and world, and go in a totally different direction--but it doesn't seem like that's what's in store.

And that's not even getting into the fact that the original film's red pill/blue pill binary has become a twisted touchstone for various nasty subsets of extremist internet culture. Is this really the right time to return to "Wonderland" and travel back down this particular rabbit hole?

I'll remain open to whatever The Matrix 4 turns out to be--partially because it's my job, and partially because I love the original so much. Even I have to admit that it's a little bit exciting that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are also coming back, and I'm not really too concerned about how these two very dead characters might get written back in--it's science fiction, they'll figure something out. But right now, it's hard to get past the feeling that whatever happens with this movie, we simply don't need another Matrix sequel.

It's been 20 years since the original Matrix changed action movies and sci-fi forever. I'm not saying we should never get to revisit its fictional world. But it should be done in a spin-off or reboot--a brand new story with new characters--not with yet another sequel featuring Neo, Trinity, and all the baggage of a movie trilogy that's 20 years old and two thirds terrible. It's hard to imagine this turning out good.

The problem with the Matrix sequels is that the Wachowski brothers got a bit full of themselves and started to think they were writing deeply philosophical treatises instead of lightweight summer entertainment. Between the overbearing dialog and overbearing action sequences, we ended up with a pair of movies that are hard to sit through. Still love the first one, though. It was just the right blend of over-the-top action and tongue-in-cheek pseudo-philosophizing with Keanu Reeves perfectly cast as someone who just had to stand around and look bewildered.

Make it a coming of age movie of Neo and Trinity. Take us on a tour into their lives through the current movements we are going through. Let us feel and see what they feel about world issues bro. Have Neo as a dying centrist that tries to save humanity from tribalism.. . Trinity can be an Apple fangirl that leads the fight against Android, but is later woken by Neo and joins his centrist stance on everything. Oh and since both dudes are now girls ( directors ), they can throw in their spin on drag life in it too, just how they did it with the 2nd and 3rd poo poo Matrix flicks.. . Everyone's happy. Didn't mention blacks because well, they've already said blacks are cool in their movies. OH, try flat earthers. Jon Lovitz as a flat earth prophet, perfect. I'm still gonna watch this because it's The Matrix, but.. . I don't feel great about the Wachowskis anymore. 1st one was GOLD and didn't need sequels. ..

To anyone who doesn’t think this movie will be a great idea, that the matrix is dead, Star Wars is dead, superhero movies are dying and life is dead... here’s some advice :

DONT WATCH THE MOVIE!

While you’re sarcastically posting about how terrible neo’s character arc was or how you ate a mocha frappe organic latte infused shimeji mushroom (vg) (gf) for lunch on insta, I’ll be laughing and loving the new movie. Yes it will probably be shit. Yes it will have corny Keanu lines, yes the Wachowskis are off the planet, but this is exactly why I’m watching this one. I don’t care if it’s bad, I’m still going to love it.

Litchie, I hope your life gets better mate, coz it sounds like you’re suffering. Stop comparing shit to the past, and appreciate old Keanu’s gonna give us another fun ride even if it’s “not going to be as cool as the original”. Get over it. Being cool is dead. That’s the actual truth.

Watch this movie and have fun with it.

Yeah, this goes without saying. I'm just gonna ignore it like 2 and 3.

Matrix is dead. Star Wars is dead. Superhero movies are dying. Even music is dead. Originality, pretty much, is dead.

The saying "things were better before" is pretty fucking accurate by now.

Here lies an example of the problem. A movie doesn't have to be a "cultural zeitgeist". I doesn't have to be woke, or make some profound statement about politics, culture, or anything really. Can't it just be good fun? Sit down, turn on the screen, and turn off all preconceived notions and just enjoy the flick. Your ability to enjoy life may yet improve as a result. "Smell the roses" as they say.

@gaiden81: The Matrix sequels pretty much popularized the blockbuster with a philosophical message. The Wachowskis put great thought into all their work.

There is a place for mindless fun.

But even great fun doesn't have to be mindless. For example, I'm a big fan of the family theme in the fast movies.

@Bread_or_Decide: Correct. A movie can be one or the other. Even both.

Let's not dismiss/judge a movie for it's perceptions, but only for it's intentions. Not every movie deserves the same metric.

This article seems to be saying "It's not worth my time unless it's pushing my agenda", and that is a slippery slope into bigotry and boredom. In my opinion, of course.

yea yea. i loved the sequels yes the original is 10 and the sequels are only 9

but that has nothing to do with the disinterest in another sequel. revolutions very much tied the ends and came like 3 years after the original. very sensible

this comes almost decades later when all sorts of reboots and rehashes are too common anyway. and its helmed by a person that seems to have lost any vision

now here is an actual chance to retroactively make older movies weaker. but thankfully the time break is so large that its probably easy to just ignore this even if it tries to claim that morpheus was never real or some genisys-level crap like that. or that neo is old evil and new girl comes to save world

Not my fault that after watching literally the worst movies I ever seen I just happen to notice were directed by women…a pattern that can’t be ignored. Unfortunately, I’ve started seeing a similar pattern with Mr. Reeves most recent movies… (maybe I should check who directed them).

Matrix 4 should be a prequel about when Neo was a teenager living in San Dimas and was known as "Ted". That would be so non-bogus.

I agree with the article to the extent that the stories of the second and third matrix's were somewhat disappointing. But I'm still curious about matrix 4. With today's level of technology I think at the very least we'll have a stunning action flick with at least some inspiring themes and dialogue.

Neo...dead

Trinity: DEFINITELY dead

It makes no sense to even make another one. But in this garbage age of reboots, remakes, Micheal bay and those garbage azz Russo brothers, nothing surprises me anymore...

All of a sudden the millennials over at Gamespot are movie critics now. Go figure. Next thing you know they're going to want to sway what games we like by giving them scores and "in-depth" reviews. What is this world coming to? Tell ya what, Gamespot. How about you stick to "reviewing" games and let the professionals that actually KNOW what they're talking about handle movies? K?

Dear Gamespot,

Remember when Jurassic Park got The Lost World and Jurassic Park III with a similar reception spanning more years? What happened when Jurassic World came about and people enjoyed it despite the classic that it wasn't? Yeah, Fallen Kingdom didn't live up to its hype, although it was more consistent with the previous one. So why do we need The Matrix 4?

The first boot the series up with a program, the second took us through recursion, while the third ended on a loop, so what the series needs now is a reboot, although not in the classic sense of the word because the concept itself works without changing the cast of characters. It has the potential to do so in a Days of Future Past kind of narrative.

I agree with the overall premise of this article, if not the rationale.

The second and third Matrix films were excellent. As the article notes, there is a vocal group that attacks the second and third films, including the author. The author is entirely correct regarding the sequels' reception, which if not negative, was certainly polarizing, compared to the original film.

Some note a hope the fourth film "gets it right again," which presumes flaws in the second and third films. Those films went beyond the initial science fiction premise to embrace more complex philosophy, symbolism, and heavy use of Gnosticism and other esoteric ideologies in their underpinnings.

We don't need a fourth Matrix film and we don't deserve one if we didn't appreciate Matrix 2 and 3, put bluntly. If those films failed to resonate to mass audiences, with their more complex philosophies and absence of moral simplicity, why would that change for the subsequent sequel? Stepping back from those films, and presenting the fourth as an "apology" for two pieces of great film making, would also be a disservice to them.

The simple rebels vs the robots controlling a false reality to feed on humans was a simple good rebellion vs evil controlling force story like many others in science fiction. The story became much richer and more interesting in later films, when it was in fact Smith, not Neo, acting in the role of the Gnostic messianic figure out to destroy the lie that is reality created by the Demiurge figure, the Architect. Neo, not the actual messianic figure of the metaphor, but actually a symbol for all humans' choice of paradigms, was forced to choose between allowing Smith to end the Matrix, or to compromise his ideals and defend the status quo, and chose the status quo. It was a much more intellectually interesting conflict than we could have expected from the initial setup, and a great achievement on the part of the film makers, for the trilogy as a whole.

There's no pleasing everyone with most things, and there's decidedly no pleasing everyone with another Matrix. It can either double down on the philosophy and symbolism of Reloaded and Revolutions, which would alienate a portion of the audience in the way the original sequels did, or it can backpedal from them, cheapening the groundwork laid out, and alienating another portion of the fandom.

Leaving it only would certainly be the best case scenario.

I think a sequel may not be necessary... BUUUUT, what if they get it right? What if it turns out to be amazing? Isn't that good enough reason to let them do it?

In the end... we may only benefit if it turns out to be a great movie. Didn't like the previous sequels either. More then anything, I would LOVE to see a completely new Matrix game with a character that isn't based on NEO... but inside that world.. Like... Morpheus o Trinity.

You should have voted with your wallet when Disney started pumping out all the unnecessary live-action remakes of their old animated films and producing new Star Wars sequels when Return of the Jedi was a perfect conclusion to the saga. This is the future YOU chose, America.

I thought the Matrix sequels were pretty cool. As brilliant as the first one? No not really, but still very special in their own right.

I'd put them on the same level as return of the jedi or dark knight rises. Decent movies that had brilliant predecessors.

"Regardless of your personal feelings about them, they've gone down in history as massive disappointments,"..... ohh? Except yours obviously..

As all entertainment is and will always be...personal "liking" is all subjective. love reading articles that enforce the writers personal feeling as though they hold water above all other views..

As for me i loved the films the total package drew me in to the science. sure there are short comings all the films have but as a whole they deliver a epic written story that was so far beyond anything in the time frame they released.

its like inception and interstellar..these films brought to the big screen a component that generally is easy to understand but so well developed in the films they bring imagination alive.

im hoping this film bring more of that feeling cause THATS what made fans love it.

If anybody enjoys sci-fi and complicated plots but with social issues and metaphors, I recommend you to have a look on "Abre los ojos" (Open your eyes), a great film in which later was based "Vanilla sky" that original version is amazing, just need subs in case you don't understand very well Spanish.
