Why We're Worried About The Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake | Spot On

Lucy and Tamoor have some concerns about Konami's Metal Gear Solid 3 Delta: Snake Eater project--let's talk about it.

The PlayStation Showcase offered an early look at a variety of new games coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR, but the biggest reveal was undoubtedly a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The title is one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry and, finally, it is out in the open. The immediate response, naturally, was excitement, particularly from the GameSpot team. But in the hours following, concerns began to arise.

Metal Gear Solid is one of the biggest and most iconic video game franchises of all time and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is regarded as one of the greatest games of all time. But there is cynicism and skepticism around Konami's ability to do justice to the franchise and the game. On this week's episode of Spot On, Metal Gear Solid fans Lucy and Tamoor discuss why they're worried about the project, delving into some of the key questions that remain unanswered, and why they may be cause for concern.

Spot On is a weekly news show airing Fridays in which GameSpot's managing editor Tamoor Hussain and senior producer Lucy James talk about the latest news in games. Given the highly dynamic and never-ending news cycle of the massive video game industry, there's always something to talk about but, unlike most other news shows, Spot On will dive deep into a single topic as opposed to recapping all the news. Spot On airs each Friday.

Unless Konomi goes out of business and/or sells off the Metal Gear franchise, they're the only company that could make it. Given that, I think a remake is the best option without Kojima at the helm anymore.

@spacemanlegend: Konami is just a publisher anymore, they hire out to a slew of developers who also hire out to many different studios, that may work with a few different developers.

Konami as a first party developer, has not been active for decades now. But they do own all of the IPs, as well gather all of the funding from many, many sources of investment into this publishers games.

Articles in 2021 stated Konami (who really fuct up in the mobile Chinese market, and lost their asses) started getting back into the AAA console market (that is doing very well) and they outsourced many of their IPs, (like pub gets <30% but owns the IP/assets, Developer >30%)

Gamesindustry. biz also has some articles about Konami, bringing back Metal Gear, Contra, Castlevania, and Silent Hill. Konami's biggest home brew game right now is the pro evolution soccer game that sales really well. They are still trying to carve a profitable position in the China, but it is doubtful. Moneywise they are semi hurting, but they are still very big. Whether they get bought out, or jump start their most valuable IPs, is too soon to tell.

@jenovaschilld: My point is that we're not getting Metal Gear without Konami and Kojima probably isn't going to develop the game under Konami so a remake is probably their best shot at making a Metal Gear game that plays and feels like actual Metal Gear. Which I think is a good sign.

@spacemanlegend: Yeah they burned their bridges and pissed on them afterward, Konami and Kojima. I do not like to blame, but Konami was not only especially cruel to the developers but also the huge development team. As not everyone could move to, or go to Kojima new developer. Word is Konami blacklisted them all. Yeah Kojima will not have anything to do with any future Metal Gear, a shame.

But who knows maybe a young and hungry new team, (rumor its a developer called Virtous and a studio called Butters sp? ) will be able to hit it out of the park. I really hope the next MG is at least competently made and not just a cash crab with a name.

Wasn't Tamoor the same guy that made an article on Marvel's Spider-Man saying the 2002 Spider-Man was the worst take of Spider-Man? This guy lives to ragebait.

@mogan: Seeing how he made an entire article about a single suit in the game to say how a highly rated and influential superhero movie sucked and is now doing a web series about how popular game genres suck…

@mogan: and if that’s true, like compared to what? And what was the context? I liked the 2002 spider man okay but it wasn’t the best take on spider man Imo, and regardless yeah, calling that that is over the top.

@eldergamer99: yeah, this is happening across the board on software and…I mean I think I literally had to agree to something to USE MY TV and definitely did with my phone and pc and game consoles.

It’s really not okay and on a decent justice system judges would laugh at the enforceability of these supposed contracts that you gave zero option but to agree to to exist.

Konami is one of the worst companies. I've heard, they treat workers and employees horrendously. It sures sounds like a cash grab with no concern for the fanbase.

I am glad Kojima went independent. I loved Death Stranding and really consider him one of the great creative minds in the industry.

Makes me happy I bought the Master Collection years ago for the PS3. All the games are on disc so no worry about having to download anything that may be moot.

The two hosts make good points. While I'm sure Kojima was probably difficult to work with due to his "creative license" he still was the point man on the MG games and we all KNOW what Konami released after Kojima left. That bs game Survive. It sucked. It sucked on atomic levels of suckage. It's like Konami wanted to personally smear the MG games on purpose. They did a good job, too.

Still, no developer attached to the game. No actual game play or "recorded on PS5" action elements. Nada. Just another leading trailer that tells us nada. I'll be surprised if its any good. I have zero hopes for it and I'm not going to get my hopes up because, well, Konami.

MGS3 is one of the best games in the franchise. Easily. If Konami screws this up you can pretty much guarantee a level of hate you've never seen before come out of the woodwork. If there's one thing you don't screw up it's something gamers have loved for years and hold dear to their memories.

@mesome713: Considering how much everyone enjoyed the Metal Gear games, I don't think he wasted anyone's money. They were all system sellers. A lot of people made a lot of money. You don't hear anyone complain about how much money Hollywood spends on a potential Blockbuster. I think, Kojimas spending was nothing in comparison.

@mesome713: Yeah, he kinda does but he's also the dude that literally INVENTED Metal Gear, man. He wrote it, directed it, coded that bad boy. From 1 all the way to 5. Kojima may not be the most time conscious person on the planet when it comes to games but he makes AMAZING games regardless.

Well if it sucks then we'll ALWAYS have the original. and all we need is Konami to put it on PC and The people will take it from there ;D

~Kojima is out of his natural element with crappycrap like DeathStranding.

It is only a concern because now it is multiplatform. When people thought that it was exclusive it was perfect.

I always facepalm when I see people upset something is being remade. The original will always exist. Even if this game doesn't do it justice we aren't losing anything. That being said, I'm curious if this is a MGS3 remake or an MGS3 Subsistence remake.

@thefoxhounded: While yes, the original will always exist, games take time, manpower and money to make. Studios have finite amounts of all three, so the more they divert to remakes the less is left for new games. That's what we're losing.

@olddadgamer: oh yeah, new games have been great! Gollum, Redfall, cyberpunk on release, years of No man’s sky, it goes on. New ip doesn’t equal success.

@shalomanoray: True, but, by that logic, ALL we should have are remakes. There will always be good new games, there will always be bad new games, but, without the time and resources, the chances of there being any good new games goes down.

@olddadgamer: with how the general public spends money, you may not like it, but back to back remakes would make waaay more money. Bloodborne Remake, Final Fantasy 9 Remake, Time splitters remake. It would print easy money. If you’re gonna make new IP, work hard on it and make it actually good to compete with people’s nostalgia and comfort on remade older games.

Coming from the site that gave RE4 Remake a better score than the original game , i bet you anything that MGS3 remake gonna be more faithful to the OG and even a better game than the dogshit half-assed re-imagined RE4 remake or any lazy dogshit Capcom pulls with RE Engine

Yeah this article is not it Gamespot , do better because its not cool anymore to hate on Konami , leave that Anti-Konami bandwagon behind and stop baiting for clicks

@Barighm: I'm just tired of the hypocrisy in the gaming industry these days , everyone is chasing trends and doesn't judge things fairly , its obvious that the professionalism from these gaming media sites have went downhill ever since companies start passing pay-checks to push good scores and Capcom is a prime example of that and i'm shocked nobody call them out since they started doing that since RE7 VHS tapes fiesta that Capcom trying to make people forget by taking down videos exposing that , its embarrassing how no one is being transparent about to call it out but it seems these gaming sites don't care at all

it's not spaced out & becomes hard to read.

-I didn't play RE4 remake yet. As far as 'scary' goes

none of them were actually scary. it was more offsetting or gross.

The hallways walk when you went through a door or stairs(iirc)

was creepy.

Its the first MGS getting a multiplatform release day one since MGSV, easily the worst Metal Gear SOLID game ever made. Why did it even have the Solid part in it??? Should have called it Metal Gear Silent No Personality Man. Everything about it was just so off and felt nothing like an MGS game.

Focus on making a good game first before bringing to every platform you can, including that crap series s.

~I agree it's nothing like any other MGS game. Yet i still loved it & put easily 1000 hours in(ps4) I liked Ocelot looking like a Russian Cowboy acting American.. I can see why it annoyed & offended MGS fans..

I wonder if Konami would use the original voice recordings or redo them with the original cast. I am more concerned about the story remaining the same and the controls getting updated.
