Why You Should Buy a Vita in 2015

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Better, slimmer, longer.

Join us over the next few days as we look at all of the leading games consoles and platforms out right now and try to convince you why you should spend your hard-earned cash. Today we're looking at the Vita, with Zorine Te telling you why it's the handheld console of choice.

With an existing library of original games and well-handled ports making use of the handheld's punchy hardware, there's already plenty of reasons why the PlayStation Vita is a great choice for gaming on the go. This year the addition of some hot new games and PlayStation Now functionality could make the Vita your go-to platform for handheld gaming.

The Vita received a slick new model last year: the PlayStation Vita Slim. The original handheld was revamped with a thinner and lighter body and a longer battery life. While the Vita Slim (also known as the PlayStation Vita 2000) sports an IPS LED screen that is less impressive than that of the original model's OLED screen, games on the Vita still look sharp and colourful, and action still plays out smoothly.

The Library

It has been nearly three years since the Vita first launched in North America, and no longer can Vita owners cry for a lack of games.

Tearaway
Tearaway

Media Molecule's Tearaway connects the real world with its virtual one to create a game that taps into the potential of the Vita's touch screen capabilities and controls. The charming and wondrous visuals in Tearaway are brought to life on the Vita's vibrant screen. If you prefer your platformers to be challenging, roguelike Spelunky is a pleasure (and pain) to sink into. While the game is available on other platforms, the Vita iteration offers responsive controls that are better-suited to the game and a UI that is easier to see on the five-inch screen.

Velocity 2X sets itself apart as a platformer with shoot 'em up elements that dazzled us and earned itself our 2014 Vita Game of the Year award. The game's mechanics work symbiotically with each level's design, making the fast and flashy chase for that perfect run all the more rewarding.

Need a hit of nostalgia? The Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster brings two classic RPGs for the price of one to the handheld. The Vita-exclusive Persona 4 Golden is more than just a remaster of the PlayStation 2 classic; laden with new features and gameplay improvements, it offers a refined take on role-playing games that sets itself apart from others in the genre.

Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 2

If you've always felt like you've missed the legacy of other established series, the Vita offers a plethora of PlayStation classics, too. Couldn't muster the courage to play through horror games when you were younger? Grab the classic Resident Evil 2 or Silent Hill for scares on the go. Don't understand why Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is generating so much excitement? Make your way through the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection while in transit. The Vita offers a portable means to catch up on experiences first established on the PlayStation consoles of old. Throw in some triple-A games such as Telltale's The Walking Dead, Borderlands 2, and Minecraft, and there is little argument against the variety of games the Vita is able to offer.

Upcoming Games

The Vita's library stands to expand this year with both original games and sequels. The gorgeous turn-based RPG Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines, which has players battling monsters to accumulate points. These points allow the player to marry deities and produce children. The player's family line is beset by a curse that causes all members of the bloodline to die in two years, so progress through the game is made in generations. Last year, Atlus announced Persona 4: Dancing All Night, which catapults the Persona 4 cast into spinoff rhythm-game territory.

Severed
Severed

From the creators of the Luchadore-themed beat 'em up Guacamelee! comes Vita-exclusive action game Severed. The game is fronted by a one-armed heroine who must slash her way through colourful monsters in a non-linear world.

Then there are cross-platform games like Resident Evil: Revelations 2, Mighty No. 9, Olliolli2: Welcome to Olliwood, and Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, all of which have had predecessors that have graced a handheld console.

Square Enix has confirmed it is working on a new entry into the SaGa RPG series, with SaGa 2015 announced exclusively for the Vita last year, although the publisher is yet to confirm whether the game will be released outside of Japan. Similarly, cult-classic horror series Corpse Party may be making a Vita entry with a domain for Corpse Party: Blood Drive registered by localisation company XSEED Games earlier this month.

The potential offerings of PlayStation Now shouldn't be overlooked either. The service unlocks a library of PlayStation 3 games which can be streamed to the Vita. At the moment PlayStation Now's Vita functionality is still in beta, so it may be worth testing the waters (i.e. your internet connection) before picking up a long-term subscription.

The Hardware

No Caption Provided

The Vita Slim contains a quad-core CPU capable of pushing 2GHz, making it twice as powerful as that of the 3DS and enabling it to stream both PS3 and PS4 games. Both the screen and rear panel are touch responsive, and the console weighs in at a reasonable 0.48 pounds (219 grams.)

While the Vita Slim does contain 1GB of internal storage, a proprietary memory card is necessary for owners who intend to frequent the PS Store. Cards are available in a range of sizes up to 64GB.

A brand new Vita bundled with either Borderlands 2, The Walking Dead, or Madden NFL 13 will set you back $200 and includes an 8GB memory card. If you already have a subscription to PlayStation Plus, the Vita also gets access to its own selection of free games for download.

Other Stuff

In addition to the PlayStation Now, which enables streaming of PS3 games to the handheld, the Vita supports remote play from the PS4. This can be achieved in one of two ways. The first method allows players to connect remotely to their PS4 through the Vita via an internet connection, allowing the Vita to function as a secondary screen. The second method requires the Vita to connect to the PS4 directly by receiving a signal sent from the console and requires the handheld to remain within range.

Hit up some Destiny in bed or on the toilet--just make sure the wifi connection is sturdy to minimize lag. Certain Vita games also support cross-save, allowing players to pick-up game progress on the Vita where they left off on the PS4 or PS3.

And let's not forget last year's launch of the PlayStation TV, which brings Vita games onto a TV screen. The PlayStation TV can read both physical Vita games and download digital games that have been purchased. While the PS TV may not be a necessary add-on to the Vita, it's nice to have the option to bring some of the handheld's more visually appealing games onto a larger screen.

With a library of games that make use of the system's hardware, a host of streaming capabilities, and the cross-save feature, the PlayStation Vita is a powerful handheld that offers expansive standalone experiences which are heightened when complemented with a PS4.

Check out our rundowns of the other platforms in 2015.

The Uncharted Golden Abyss demo alone gave me at least half a dozen "too good to be true" moments. It's incredible just how close to console play these Vita games are.

I went into Gamestop around the launch of Vita with a lot of skepticism. In general, most PSP AAA titles were not even close to console quality. Killzone on PSP wasn't even a legit shooter. It was a top down game you'd expect on iOS. Star Wars Battlefront and Socom on PSP were terrible graphics and needed auto aim to make up for the single analog stick. Ratchet and Clank games looked decent, but had odd camera controls because of that single analog stick that made them hard to play sometimes.

So I was expecting to be let down by the "console quality" of Vita. After playing that Uncharted demo, I left the store thinking "MUST BUY"! It played identically to the PS3 games with the same voice actors and everything. In fact, I ended up playing my Vita instead of my PS3 haha. The "too good to be true moments" just kept coming with games like Unit 13 (think Socom), Gravity Rush, LBP Vita, NFS Most Wanted, Ratchet and Clank Collection, and even COD Delcassified.

Declassified's single player is terrible which accounts for most of the bad reviews, but the multiplayer is some great COD fun. It reminds me more of COD4. It even has the Shipment map from COD4 and Nuke House which is half of the popular Nuke Town map from the console games.

Unit 13 is from the Socom developers and plays just like a Socom console game. You can coop online every one of the 40 or so single player missions

NFS Most Wanted is the legit full open world game that was on PS3. I found my corvette in exactly the same spot as on the PS3 game. It also carried over my experience totals from PS3 so I had the special cars unlocked.

Gravity Rush is a full open world super hero type game similar to Infamous. Just incredible. Ratchet and Clank Collection play identically to the console versions on Vita.

Killzone Mercenary is not just a legit Killzone Shooter, IMO its better than Killzone 3. It looks outstanding and plays just as good. In general, the shooters on Vita are identical to playing on a PS3 and far above anything you will find on another mobile device (including PSP).

There's two years worth of AAA goodness waiting for any new Vita owner, and it's well worth the price of admission.

Signed up to post on this as I don't feel the article is all that good at answering if you should buy one. I bought a Slim Vita earlier in the year so I'll give you my thoughts. It's a very good machine capable of some amazing games and I genuinely have enjoyed it when I play it. However, it feels like i bought a 'dying' console in some ways.

I have 5 vita games, all japanese and niche. They are great games in my opinion, each is the quality of a great ps2 or basic ps3 title. I also have 3 or 4 psp games which are around the ps1-ps2 level. Again most are japanese and niche.

It's great for that sort of thing, but i can't see too many original vita games or american vita games on a level that i'd like to buy. Persona 4 golden is amazing and competes with any JRPG on any console, but there's no equivalent to say, Skyrim. I'm also seeing a lot of games on the DS that I wish would be ported over, but it feels like the vita library is almost 'complete'. They don't seem interested in utilising the vita to its full potential which is a shame as it could have years and years left, the hardware is really good but sony seem almost done with it, as are more top devs.

Honestly, I'd buy a DS unless you really want to play persona and hit up on JRPGs that you may have previously missed.

The other thing is the price. I think I paid too much for this console at this time and £39.99 per game is a little steep when most aren't AAA titles. Like yes, you pay £39.99 for Zelda or Xenoblade, but not for Neptune Hyptunia happy rythym saga you know?

Not trying to bash it because I own it and I do like it. But Sony should review it, and hopefully support it. For now, I wouldn't bother.

It's unfortunate that so many Nintendo fans are absolutely vile towards Sony's handheld, yet the 3DS's hardware is archaic in comparison and the controls aren't nearly as good. Even the D-pad is miles better than the 3DS's. I think the real reason the Vita is suffering is the negative attitude towards it. Nintendo fanboys are always saying "But the Vita has no games". What they really mean is there are no games THEY want to play on it, ie: Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, etc. That's cool if they only have interest in those games, to each their own, but they don't need to be destroying the Vita because it has games they're not personally into.

<< LINK REMOVED >> This is absolutely true. Vita has been trolled to death since day one, and not just from 3DS fanboys. Critics latched on to the "console quality" line and started reviewing games like Uncharted GOlden Abyss and Assassin's creed Liberation vs the PS3 games which of course knee caps the review from the start. No mobile platform will ever be as good as a console, but Vita does come close. Uncharted GA looks great and plays identical to the PS3 games. NFS Most Wanted on Vita is the identical open world to on PS3. the graphics arent as good, but I found my corvette in exactly the same spot I found it on the PS3 game. It also carried over my experience total so I had the special car unlocks.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't own a DS, thinking to buy one, and I actually play Vita. However, let's be honest. It's not just Zelda, Pokemon and Mario. I'd buy a DS for Persona Q, for Shin Megami 4, for Xenoblade, for Fantasy Life. And these are the niche Japanese games which the vita are meant to be slaying on. Instead we're getting all these rythym games and female led anime rpgs that are fanservice to someone. The Vita has much much much better hardware, controls etc. But whats the point in that if all the games are being made for DS?

<< LINK REMOVED >> I own a 3DS and Vita. I also owned a DS and PSP. I found myself leaning more towards to Sony because they were just offering a totally different experience.

3DS has great first Party games and some really good 3rd Party. But the Vita has games would normally not come out on the handheld. Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice, MineCraft, Person 4 Golden, Wipeout, Gravity Rush and they look great.

Need for Speed Most Wanted looks and play awesome. I like my 3DS but Vita although it does not have as big as a library as 3DS is sure one heck of a machine.

<< LINK REMOVED >> As a Nintendo "fan boy", I only play Monster Hunter, sold my Vita just to get a 3ds and MH, when they release MH for Vita? I'll switch. There really are no games on vita. Persona4G, Soul Sacrifice, and the MGS collection were all that were good. LBP was bug-riddled even.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Monster Hunter was a huge loss for Vita. Had they been able to keep that, I think Vita would be doing much better. As for no games, you really aren't looking if you actually think that. Or like the OP said, you have specific gaming likes that Vita does not provide. As a LBP Vita player, I can assure you the game is not bug-riddled as well.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I couldn't even download levels from online, it was horribly buggy for me, possibly a bad cart? As for no games, I understand there are games, but really, there aren't any high grade AAA game-type stuff in the store, Killzone Mercenary was nice, but was still lacking, again, SS and P4G were the best games really, Gamefaqs lists games in most popular order, so you could check there, I may be wrong, but RPGs are all we have really, no diversity. Personally I loved my vita and it was hard to part with it, but 3DS has so many more games, and Nintendo actually cares about it. P.S. don't forget that awful game, CoD: Black Ops Declassified. Can't say anything about Freedom Wars, sold vita couple months after it came out, so didn't really have a chance to buy.

EDIT: Gravity Rush was insanely good, forgot about that one. Basically, all I mean to say, is Vita is GOOD, but it's dead, or dying.

<< LINK REMOVED >> the Crash trilogy + Crash Team Racing, the Spyro trilogy, and Silent Hill are all on the Euro Vita store (along with Breath of Fire 3 which people often seem to be nostalgic for). It's surely worth using an old 8MB card to access all that once in a while. Crash 1 might need buying on PS3 and transferring though, it's still available to download but won't appear in the store right now.

(Plus an honourable mention for the Ratchet and Clank trilogy, the Sly trilogy and the Jak and Daxter trilogy all on there in HD.)

"Hit up some << LINK REMOVED >>in bed or on the toilet--just make sure the wifi connection is sturdy to minimize lag." Playing in the same room using the PS4''s built in Wifi still results in minute amounts of lag rendering FPS and Racing games unplayable, I'll admit it's pretty close but unfortunately I feel there will always be an inherent lag. For example, GTA V when driving through the city at high speeds you cannot make adjustments in real time resulting in erratic driving from constant correction or over compensating for those corrections. Now imagine that in Gran Turismo at 160 Mph or in Need for Speed, it's just not going to be playable. The same issue arises with shooters, by the time you take the shot the enemy has moved or even killed you making the genre unplayable, factor in Destiny's horrible kill timing system and it's over. Also the lack of L2/R2 L3/R3 and you end up with such a mess, the touch screens just never always work, or even worse, self trigger at times, overall a very frustrating and unsatisfying experience.

Sadly Sony has turned their attention away from the Vita and instead favor the PS TV with updates Vita owners would kill for, considering the hardware in the PS TV is a Vita without the screen and buttons, why can't I use my PS3 controller with my Vita but you can with the PS TV? I know it may not be the most practical thing to carry around, but in all honesty I rather that then have my hands cramp up or just generally lose interest do to the clumsy controls (I have large hands making it difficult to hold the Vita and not touch the rear touch pad all the time) Borderlands is a perfect example of a game that would greatly benefit from the use of a controller.

Games wise the Vita has been getting better but it's still lacking in several areas. If you like RPG's you seem to be in luck, or crap indie games that are ported from the android universe you'll be more than satisfied with the Vita. However if you want to play a decent Racing game, they simply don't exist, besides Wipeout, but that's not for everyone. Is it too much to ask for to have a Burnout made for the Vita? Or Gran Turismo, this will likely come out just before the Vita is obsolete, thanks Polyphony. Arcade games seem to be the most popular genre right now, but have we not moved past that fade yet?

I wish infamous would have come out and biotic!!!! seriously, why'd they cancel!!!!?? anyways still don't have tearawry so ill get that soon

If Sony can find a way to keep software support for the Vita going and somehow miraculously boost sales (as unlikely as that is), I'd like to see another hardware refresh:

-Either include a decent amount of built-in storage, like 16 or 32GB, or support MicroSD cards.

-Add a small rumble motor. It might impact battery life but every smartphone has these, and firing a gun in a Vita game feels weird when you're so used to rumble in console games

-Make the sticks click-able and add L2/R2 triggers in some form. If they can't build these into the hardware, put them on some kind of detachable add-on, and advertise it as essential for PS4 Remote Play

Lastly, to anyone who thinks the Vita is already dead, check this out: << LINK REMOVED >>

Recommending the Vita in 2015 is about the same as recommending the SNES in 2015. Both have great games to play but nothing recently and nothing coming.

I buy consoles to play games. therefore exclusives are the main reason for me to chose a console over another.

O lot of the indies listed here can be played somewhere else. The next big games coming for the console are not exclusive. Not to mention that Bandai Namco and tecmo Koei are releasing theirs next big installment(God Eater 2 Rage Burst and Toukiden Kiwami) not only on vita but PS4 as well. Wich means you can choose to play a better version of the game if you have a PS4.

Only reasons to get a Vita are Uncharted golden abyss, Gravity Rush, Freedom Wars and Soul Sacrifice Delta.. the few great exclusives. But with Sony droping suport on various apps for the Vita sure in no time they will drop it altogether and release remastered versions of the biggest hits for the PS4. Just be patient.

While a ps4 is better remember that you buy handhelds for portability And you just compared two platforms that are not meant to compete or be compared with one another. Handhelds are meant to be compact and developed to give people on the go a platform to game on. So you can say vita is by far the most powerful of the current handhelds by far. Now at same time 3DS still sells better and still has a better and bigger libary of games which is still what sells any platform/console. If vita had the full support from Sony of let's say nintendo's better support of 3DS I think Vita could and would do a lot better but right now nintendo seems to do and take handhelds more seriously and do it better then any of its competion and even does best with a handheld of lesser power and versatility. Just shows you what matters most and first and how important games really are to any platform. Also I'm patient and I can wait for Sony come around but fact is in the gaming business and industry gamers normally aren't and don't want to wait to long for games or anything.

I have had a vita since day one, and sadly would never recomend it to anyone. Sure there are a few good games, but the future looks bleak. It seems as if sony gave up on the system a while back and is not going to release any more first party games on the system. They just expect it to be a streaming device for the ps4. If more first party AAA games would come out for the vita I would buy them day one, but for now it will continue to collect dust.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's funny. I love my Vita and I'd recommend it to plenty of people. Best handheld I've ever owned by far. Persona 4 Golden is worth buying the console by itself. I've never played a better handheld game, and probably never will. It's amazing. Not to mention all the free games I've got just for owning one. There are also plenty of AAA games for the Vita. Freedom Wars, Persona 4 Golden, Final Fantasy X, Gravity Rush, Zero Escape, Masamune Rebirth, Soul Sacrifice, Tearaway, Ys Celceta, and plenty more. Not to mention a ton of indie games and a huge back catalog from PSP and PS1. Many PSN games make their way to the Vita as well. There's literally hundreds of games to play. Mine never collects dust. It's a great way to watch Netflix as well. Sucks that you don't appreciate yours more. To each their own I guess.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I agree with you, but it is true that the earlier marketing claims (see Vita's realease) Sony made were based on the fact that the Vita was going to have lots of "heavyweight" games. The problem is that the really good games are out of the "comfort zone" of western gamers in general.

That said, I do have to admit that your claim about Persona 4 Golden is, in my opinion, as true as it can get. While I don't endorse "just taking shit", bottom line is that this problem is something we'll hardly change, and as such we must take what we've got. And we've got plenty. All those games you mention are top notch. This "misfortune" just happens to be a great chance for gamers to expand their gaming horizons.

Exactly it's a shame because it's a great handheld hardware wise with poor support and really they can do a lot of good with Vita but seems like they don't care to much about handheld market. I mean picture vita with the support and libary of a handheld like 3DS, man wouldn't that be great. Vita needs the great the first party support 3DS gets and Sony needs to bring over its heavyweights that's for sure. For now vita is good for a lot of things and can be used for many different reasons but games isn't exactly it's strength of where it should be.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's not really, but it's triple-A in the sense that the Vita version of Minecraft has pretty much all the same features as the home console and PC versions (except mods obviously)

Great piece, Zorine! Oreshika looks amazing (just Binged it - yes, I use Bing). Let's hope that DrinkBox won't load Severed up with tons of stale and outdated memes. Those sort of ruined their last two games for me.

Sold my Vita within a year of buying it. I was an early adopter but it became clear, early on that it wasn't going to deliver the games. The hyped games that were promised weren't delivering, the psp and ps3 libraries weren't coming available and there was little on the horizon to get excited about. I sold it while it still had value. 2nd time Sony burned me on a handheld. Great platform, no games, deja vu.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The PSP had no games? I hope the crack wasn't too expensive... Either that or you just don't like JRPGs. It was by far the best console for JRPGs last gen. By far. I loved it. Loved my DS too, but my PSP definitely got more use. Birth By Sleep was probably the best handheld game last gen too (if you don't count the Final Fantasy Tactics reboot anyway).

You should buy one to understand true disappointment first hand! Love my PSP and still use and buy stuff for it but the Vita is a joke. Only a third of the PSP library mostly due to no UMD support, it can't even get all the PSOne classics, it only has all of a handful of exclusives worth playing and then it's back to the dust pile. Third parties abandoned it, including the ones that traditionally support Sony and then even Sony gave up on it and said no more support and that it will just get indie games, things everyone else gets that are cheaper and better on their platform and in the case of phones and tablets completely takes away Vita's portability advantage.

Then Sony removed the OLED screen to make it even less special and then had the nerve to sell TV output as a standalone device even though PSP could do it ever since the original Slim. It's even losing apps and its pricing for proprietary hardware is also outrageous when it should have allowed the universal things on the market. Vita is amazing hardware but hardware alone doesn't make a platform great. Rent or borrow a vita, play its few good exclusives and then return it. Don't let it take up space in your life, it doesn't deserve it. The PSP Go was Vita foreshadowing. There is no reason to own a Vita if you have a 3DS or a mobile platform, especially if you have both. It's the first Sony platform I can say no thanks to.

Cool. I loved my Vita since day one, and still play it every day.

Vita does have some good titles just not enough wish it had a lot more as hardware wise and with all it can do it's truly worth it and espically if you own a PS4 but standalone not as much and only due to its lack of games and support. I still own my original vita since I know ps4 but still hoping one day Sony will come around and deliver the support it deserves.
