Wii U Exclusive Devil's Third Dev Responds to "Lies and Rumors"

Tomonobu Itagaki seems to suggest report that claims Nintendo won't publish the action game in North America is false.

Earlier today, a report claimed that Nintendo of America was backing out of publishing Devil's Third, an upcoming Wii U game from Ninja Gaiden designer Tomonobu Itagaki. Now, Itagaki himself has responded to the rumor. In a Facebook post titled "Calm down," Itagaki said, "Which do you believe: me or such site?"

Itagaki did not mention Nintendo of America by name or offer specific about the status of Devil's Third. Instead, he said, "The world brims over with lies and rumors. Thanks always, mates."

Nintendo of America has not commented on this rumor yet.

Back in June, Itagaki and his development team at Valhalla Game Studios released a new gameplay trailer for Devil's Third and announced that it would launch at the end of August in Europe. A release date for North America has not been announced, but the Devil's Third game page on Nintendo's website lists the title as "TBD."

Devil's Third, which combines shooting and hack-and-slash elements, was originally going to be published by the now-defunct publisher THQ. At the time, it was anXbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC game, but later shifted to become a Nintendo-exclusive.

Even if Nintendo does decide to no longer publish Devil's Third in North America, which wouldn't be unprecedented, it's always possible another company could step in.

For a closer look at Devil's Third, check out some images in the gallery below.

Deciding to back out on publishing the title would be a huge blow against Ninty. They need all the Triple A titles they can get. I don't even have a remote interest in this game but I know it's necessary at least.

Just gotten a Tweet from Nintendo of America earlier today. I believe they're STILL publishing Devil's Third in North America and will launch soon. They're deliver more information on Itagaki's game later this year.

They soo need this game...but they need to push it...market the hell out of the game like they did Splatoon...they need significant tv slots to market it...Nickelodeon and Disney Channel just won't cut it...they need the flesh out their advertising on espn, mtv, cartoon network (adult swim), nfl network, more pop cultured center tv, etc...

That's my biggest gripe with Nintendo...they don't know how to market their 3rd party games...Bayonetta is an awesome game but unless you have a wii u...and you went searching in their library...you wouldn't know it exists...i went to get madden and injustice from the store...the gamestop bammas was like "Wii U has those?"...people can't buy these games if they don't know that it exist on the system...new mario game, new Zelda, new Metroid...oh man...they push it like salt n pepper...they even put a more mature level games like Zelda and Metroid on the right channels to promote it to the the more pop cultured gamer...i myself am a fan of games like metal gear but i find great enjoyment in games like Rayman adventures and the new title typo man...kiddie games or no...i enjoy them all...but i hate that i have to go get some 3rd party titles from another system to get games that could be made available to all the consoles...now admittedly if the game can't run on the Wii U due to lesser specs that's understandable but if it can...it should be on the system and if its a graphics issue...well it might bring down the visual quality of the game compared to the others but the gameplay should remain about the same with some great add on due to the awesome controller...when it comes to exclusives...i like Nintendo the most...although the exclusive that sony earned for SF V is shifting me to have to buy a PS4 anyway...

@myerlanski: It's an M Rated game, it's going to do as well as Bayonetta 2. That limits the audience from the get-go. It needs to be released so Nintendo isn't accused of not supporting the Wii U. Simple enough.

The kind of marketing you're talking about isn't going to happen, they aren't even fully supporting the other M Rated game they're publishing the new Fatal Frame game, the word is that it's going digital only. Nintendo doesn't like putting money out for franchises that are risky or that don't deliver.

Just watch.

@uncle5555: NOBODY like putting money out for franchises that are risky or that don't deliver. why do u think we don't have new megaman or castlevania? cuz they ain't triple A. they appeal to some cult old gamers, probably hipsters, and that's it. those cod kids (which are the main market of today's gaming) with their shiny new xb1 won't beg their moms to buy castlevania.

@sakaixx: It's likely because majority in North America have spoken what games they'd rather purchase and praise.

If it comes out in NA (it will) hope they 'and you' enjoy it as I will. However, the target audience for games like Devils Third (profit) is not America. Hasn't been for over a decade.

I kind of feel for the developers at this point.

The game has been stuck in development hell for years, and NoA get cold feet at the 11th hour after promoting the game big time after securing the publishing rights.

The least they can do is come out and say they aren't going to publish it.

I certainly thinks this game should come out in the U.S. even if it sucks but I also hope that is all just BS and this game is awesome.

Just have to wait for reviews, Or for that matter real confirmation from NoA about the whole thing.

Nintendo should not back out of this title. We don't get these type of titles on Wii U that often, so it will be well appreciated.

@mrjoeyyaya: about as well appreciated as bayonetta 2 was... to the tune of less than 100k sales, or is that shipments?..., to date.

@leviathanwing: I've no idea who put that idea in your head but they were certainly telling a bit of a lie. VgChartz says Bayonetta 2 has sold 730k copies to date. Granted, VGChartz is usually inaccurate by 10% more or less, but given Wii U's low install base AND the fact that VGChartz doesn't track download sales, I think that it's safe to say a sizeable percentage of Wii U gamers bought Bayonetta 2. Not enough to match the sales of the PS360 Bayonetta games but I suspect over time sales will pass 1m mark...or just hit 0.99m :p

To be fair Nintendo is notorious for releasing great games in Japan, and completely disregarding the western market in terms of localizing them. Add that to be fact they're the only console producer still using region locking, and it feels like Nintendo is punishing fans for maintaining an interest in all of their games.

Nintendo should drop them, the game looks so damn terrible, Nintendo can't possibly want such a massive stain of a game to be associated with their clean name

The Wii U really needs this game. The Devil's Third should be the swan song for the Wii U in North America.

There is never smoke without a fire somewhere so obviously there is something going on. Mind you it might just be a distribution issue they are having too. NoA won't respond since they always have their hands tied by Japan.

Nintendo of America won't publish the game but "will be released here by a publisher Siliconera readers are quite familiar with." - meaning Xseed will publish it.

Even it it's still being published we've gotten some early information on the quality of the game. Information which indicates: yes the game is as bad as the graphics look and yet even with sub-360 launch title quality graphics it still has framerate problems, go figure.
