Wii U sales plummet as Nintendo records quarterly profit

Nintendo makes a profit of $88 million for the three months from April to June, but sells only 160,000 Wii U's worldwide.

Nintendo has announced a profit of ¥8.62 billion (approximately $88.2 million/£58 million) for the three months from April to June, but sales of the Wii U were disappointing.

No Caption Provided

The Wii U sold just 160,000 units worldwide for the three-month period: 90,000 in Japan, 60,000 in North America, and 10,000 in Europe. As of June 30, worldwide sales of Wii U hardware stand at 3.61 million.

1.03 million Wii U games were sold in the same period, which doesn't account for the recent release of Pikmin 3. Nintendo said the lack of consumer interest in the Wii U was "mainly due to the release of few key first-party titles this quarter to strongly drive the hardware sales."

Despite the slow sales of Wii U hardware, Nintendo has stuck to its previous forecast of selling 9 million Wii U's worldwide before March 2014. The publisher expects to shift twice as many 3DS' units before then, however.

Nintendo saw far better fortunes with the 3DS, which sold 1.4 million units worldwide in the same time period. The handheld shifted 640,000 units in Japan, 400,000 in Europe, and 360,000 in North America.

The publisher attributed its "brisk" 3DS hardware sales to releasing "key titles one after another." Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which was recently released in North America and Europe, sold 1.54 million copies during the quarter, which means the town management game has now shifted 4.54 million copies worldwide since being released in Japan last year.

Nintendo added that Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is now sitting at 1.43 million sales worldwide, and 11.01 million 3DS games were sold worldwide in total for the three-month period.

In net sales, Nintendo took ¥81.5 billion ($834.4 million/£548.4 million), down slightly from the ¥84.8 billion it made this time last year. All in all, Nintendo's ¥8.62 billion is an improvement on the ¥17.2 billion loss it posted for the same quarter last year.

In the coming months, Nintendo is hoping Wii U hardware sales will be stimulated by the launch of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Wii Party U, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World, and Wii Fit U.

Nintendo's rehashing the same ole turd over and over, don't get me wrong love me some zelda, metroid, and mario. but they just rely on the same stuff year after year console after console. man there's nothing in my opinion worth paying 250.00 to play on the WiiU. and just wait until the one and ps4 come out it will be in the same boat the Wii was with the 360 and ps3 inferior ports bad muliplayer, and slow OS. But if they drop it to $200 and come out with a new zelds i will buy one. Man im wondering if i should bye both consoles, or a console and another 7970Ghz. Probably go with xbox one play my 360 way more the my ps3 but most of the one's exclusives on the pc to. Man im gonna be broke this Christmas

They're betting on the re-release of an old game from 2003. Come on. Why don't you get the creative people together and give up something new.

Nintendo has sucked away all of their good will with the Wii. The problem with the Wii was there was nothing to play on it/no DLC for Mariokart and it essentially was a brick. Eventually the people who bought Wii's moved on to PS3 or Xbox 360. So when the Wii U promised that it to would suffer from the same curse, many people remembered what a waste the Wii was. Nintendo doesn't care though and in a way their strategy works, they spend almost nothing on developing hardware and then they take the free check from those poor souls who purchase this future brick. The sad part of this article is that by selling less Wii U's then Nintendo sold Wii's there will be even less games...

Nintendo has everything to go up. I don't know what's happening with them? They have a lot of exclusives like Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem,Last Story, Pandora's Tower, etc. Those are great games and I know that if Nintendo make sequels of these games that will be a hit. Zelda and Mario are ok but they need something new to revitalize the console and the entire Nintendo brand.

@joyfilth They have a severe lacking marketing strategy. That is why their sales have been lacking. the hard-core Nintendo fans all got the system. If their marketing teams had taken the bull by the horns from the start their share would have been a lot larger.

When it comes to me comparing sales figures on the PS3 and Wii U, I was merely showing that just because a system isn't selling as good as the Wii did doesn't mean it's doomed. I could use the same example on the Xbox 360. If you compare it's figures to the WiiU at this current period in their life time, the 360 had alittle more sales. But at this period, sales for the Xbox also dropped because of the new systems coming out soon. However, the Xbox still survived and has even taken the title of second place a few times. 360, PS3, either or. I'm merely showing neither of them sold like the wii, yet they're not doomed.

And once again, I will admit the Wii U could be selling better, but just because it's not on fire like the Wii was doesn't mean it won't last. Even though it really needs some games right now, you must also remember that today's economy is alot different from the economy of seven years ago. More people are unemployed, more high paying jobs have been discontinued, and people just aren't buying things like they use too. When it comes to gaming in general, It seems like every other week there is a story on GS about how a game company's yearly earnings are lower then expected because their games just aren't selling like before. There have even been several cases where game companies have either had to fire many of their employees or just close down all together. So for GS to repeatedly talk like the Wii U is doomed is not only premature and foolish, but bias.

Yeah, I remember people saying the 3DS would go they way of the Virtual Boy, a few awesome games later and it's the most successful handheld there is. Now the same people are saying the WiiU will go the way of the Dreamcast, I'm no fortune teller but I see some awesome games on the horizon so I think the WiiU will do just fine.

why do people say the wii u is a bad system? (probably a really stupid question) i wouldn't say it's a good system but really it isn't bad either. the few good games it has are actually great, and they have really good virtual console games(like earthbound and punchout)).

@hrst1 You're an idiot dude. Vita has no games whatsoever, the 3DS is loaded with games now AND on the horizon. The new Zelda, Pokemon X and Y, Mario Party...And you wanted to know 3 great current 3DS games? Are you really that stupid? lol You seem like you are butthurt that the 3DS is raping the Vita, and will continue to do so. TF2 and Counter strike arent MMO's either, dumbass troll.

@abHS4L88 @hrst1 No. Not just that. Control layout I am used to, more games I am interested in. Watching some gameplay footage of FIFA 13 on the 3DS, it seems to be on par with my PSP. A lower quality display, too. I would like to play Mario Kart 7, but I could just get a 64 emu. And I do not have a home console (only a mid-range PC), so I don't have much to compare ports to.

Every one? Virtual Boy, too? And for the others, people buy it because Tue competition seems to have been incompetent. I think purchasing a Nintendo portable is justifiable before the PSP, which blows the DS away, I play it to this day.

I like different types of games. I enjoy MMO's like Counter Strike and Team Fortress 2. I do like FIFA. Not all the games I like are AAA titles. Nothing on the 3DS makes me wish I had one. I don't own a home console, so the Vita is perfect for me. Give me examples of three great 3DS games.

Nintendo has consistently showed that consumers really don't give a damn about the power of their handheld systems ever since the Gameboy so I don't know why people still make a fuss about it, especially since every single handheld Nintendo has come out with has been massively successful in terms of sales and quality of games and the 3DS continues that trend.

Might I ask what kinds of games you're into? You did mention Fifa so if I'm to assume you're into those more realistic type games, and AAA titles, then the 3DS is clearly not for you. For me, I love RPGs, platformers, puzzle, rhythm, and action/adventure games, especially those that try to do things differently and the 3DS has provided me with plenty of amazing games. I've yet to purchase a 3DS game that has been disappointing or less than great.

@abHS4L88 @hrst1 Only has twice the RAM of the PSP. The PSP Slim was released in 2007 and the 3DS - in 2011. And there are jut no games that would make me get a 3DS. Actually, games are the reason I don't want to get it, the main one.

The 3DS is more capable than the PSP even though the display resolution is lower. MarioKart 7 plays very differently than MarioKart 64 due to the added kart accessories and track layouts that compliment this.

3DS has almost no ports and pretty much a stellar line up of games that shows no signs of slowing down, if anything, why wouldn't someone who likes unique and worthwhile games not want a 3DS?

@hrst1 Uh....because people buy portables to play games on them. The Vita's software is lacking(has great games, but not enough of them) while the 3DS this year alone is pumping out fantastic games practically every month. Frankly I don't understand why people would buy a Vita. It's a nice system with nice tech, but even Sony has been rather lazy about supporting it.

They need games to sell the Wii U. If they had flagship titles come out at launch instead of next year, these numbers would be better. Poor management.

Nintendo needed a next gen console that can compete with the Xbox One and Play Station 4. If they don't get the ball rolling here soon, they will suffer the same fate as SEGA I'm afraid...

The one thing that annoys me so badly is Nintendo talking up the innovations of the then Wii and now Wii U control methods, then not even utilizing them except in maybe a limited form, or maybe in games like Metroid Prime where the Wii remote is actually useful. The Galaxy series barely did anything with them at all. Such a shame. I wish they would make creative games on already proven controllers rather than creating a new type of controller, then trying to make something innovative around that.

"attributed its "brisk" 3DS hardware sales to releasing "key titles one after another.""

Hmm... what's coming to the Wii U starting Aug. 4th? A stream of at least one or two games every month until the end of the year. You know, the same thing that got the 3DS out of trouble.

But keep this doom and gloom shit coming PlaySlaves and XBots. It's rather hilarious. And to the Nintendrones, buy the multiplats, even if they're gimped, just buy them. That way you can go on Miiverse and lay into the devs of whatever game that's gimped. You might get free shit.

No, don't buy the gimped multiplats, then it'll tell developers that we're okay with their BS. ONLY support the good multiplats as well as the strong 3rd party exclusives, like The Wonderful 101, Sonic Lost World and Bayonetta 2.

You know the WiiU is going to go the way of the 3DS. It took over a year for the 3DS to settle in and the WiiU is still an infant. I still won't be getting a WiiU, but man do I love my 3DS.

@hrst1 It's mainly about the RPGs for me. Seeing how the DS has like 5688 of them, I knew the 3DS would eventually have a ton of them, and so far it hasn't disappointed me. And I was about to get a DS but I thought I should wait for a 3DS because it's launch wasn't that far off.

Maybe if Nintendo of America would localize some of the really good Japanese games, instead of deciding that we only want Mario and Zelda, maybe then a few more people would be interested in buying a Wii U. Get Reggie out of the way.

Good to see that they closed on a profit, now about the Wii U... I'm not surprised, to be fair. Nintendo announced its big titles for the Wii U. Emphasis on "announced". It has to actually release them like they did with the 3DS, which unfortunately takes development time (I'm a firm believer that it's best to delay a title than to just release a half-finished product).

Pikmin 3 was a good start, but I don't see it being that "big system seller" the Wii U needs. Not on its own, anyway.

It needs more than that and hopefully it will get it in the upcoming months. Until then, best of luck to the Wii U.

Considering the only two games on the Wii U that I think are truly excellent (Mass Effect 3 and Batman Arkham City) are both ports of games that I own already its hardly surprising that I haven't bought one. The 3DS mainly sells well because its good for kids, much like the DS was.

@Gargus But its those franchises that sell well and move systems.. You think Cod or any other popular 3rd party games will move Wii U off the shelves like those establishe franchises? Even if Nintendo make a new franchise, it won't move systems like those games..

Sorry but they have to maximized will sales and profit...

@dre256x @Gargus That's exactly the kind of thinking which sent avid gamers running elsewhere during the Wii's lifetime. The kind of thinking that pisses people off when Ubisoft says that they won't make any new games unless they can be a giant multi-year franchise.

My favorite Wii game, which was owned and published by Nintendo, was never even released in North America because of their obsession on only releasing guaranteed super sellers. Having to modify my system and import things didn't make me a very happy customer.

Nintendo already has the Nintendo crowd in their pocket--the ones who buy every minorly altered Mario and Zelda game--and it's not helping them. They need to work on rebuilding their brand, which won't happen by only pumping out the same games they always have done. I'd buy a Wii U if there were new and exciting IPs--that don't involve exercise and mini-games--on the system, but there aren't.
