i havent bought a nintendo system since gamecube. i didnt like it so have stayed away from them. Still waiting on their nx, it may become the new super nintendo in greatness and staying power if its as powerful as they say. Whats really gonna turn me off is if they have a shitty controller like they've had since the n64 and beyond.

The Wii-U's SOFTWARE sales are only at 60 million? That's an absolutely horrendous number...

I don't see the huge craze of Mario Maker honestly. Its just a watered down LittleBigPlanet with a weaker, more limited game engine.

@SterlingFox: maybe but mario is far superior then littlebigplanet (when comparing franchises) and as for 60millin being horrendous LMFAO - dude the BEST selling console of all time was the Playstation 2 and it sold 131 million units...and the 2nd best, 3rd best, and 4th best selling consoles (all belong to Nintendo) with the Wii (2006>present) being the best of :"their" consoles revenue wise..with just over 103 million units...and with the Wii U (2012>present) merely 3 years 60 million units is horrendous ? PS4=1 year newer/younger (2013>present) and its solid what 73.1 million units...so the Wii U is lagging (no one has argued that) but..to say horrendous would be like 20 million units in 3-4 years..>THAT would be bad...and no offense...but um for me I've been enjoying the console far more the past 1-2 years then the other consoles I own (and PC as well) I buy all current gen consoles + handhelds + a newer/modern PC (Asus) so I can just pick and choose which titles I want to play on whatever platforms I choose...and with Xenoblade Chronicles X (such a great game the original was...thank god for Operation Rainfall) and the fact that next months "X" release is going to be bigger, better, and all of the above I cant wait (especially with the title already being out in japan and doing so very well) - then you have the already released games for the console granted maybe only a limited selection (and let me add I'm far from a fan boy though I've been a gamer for 26 years and grew up on Nintendo) I dont pick one company/developer/platform to fall for and defend it...it is what it is - I own all the consoles across the board...but I have to say despite the negative responses to Wii U - from Wind Waker HD (release) considering thats the only zelda I didnt get to play the first time around when it was released in 2003 for the GC I obviously got it this time around...furthermore I cant speak for Mario Maker...as I dont own it (nor do I have any interest in owning it) but THE OTHER mario titles like for example Super Mario 3D Land/World (respectively the WII U version and the 3DS version) Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (even if these games are reboots, HD remakes, rehashed material) so what ppl love them, they get good reviews and I cant get enough Mario platforming (never could for nearly 3 decades) but thats just me to each their own...but also Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash U, even Pikmin 3 surprised me, among a few other titles (and with Star Fox next year, early 2016, the Zelda U title which I obviously wont miss, and next months monumental 300-hour Xenoblade Chronicles X which has already gotten 9/10 4.5/5 (so on and so on) and has received critical acclaim already in 2 regions ...its only 2 weeks away personally I dont understand all this talk about "nintendo dying this" or "not doing as well" "no real game selection on current console" LOL...right (despite Skylanders franchise and the billions it creates, Mario franchise BEING the biggest franchise EVER, and those are accurate statements) oh lets throw in Pokemon franchise (and Rock Hard which now has the rights to develop for nintendo and RARE coming out of the closet) future releases, future profits - and lets also not forget Nintendo still controls the handheld market, with a few releases (left this year, and next year) that are big and highly hyped for the U and the next console already on the horizon and with the 3DS XL/New 3DS XL doing well - (and according to this report the wii u is doing a bit better)...yea ok nintendos dying lol...I heard that 12 years ago...mhm...believe it when I see no fanboyism here just flat out fact...to each their own great thing about arts&entertainment is everything is subjective/opinion no one is "right" (other then quarterly revenues/charts/sheets/statistics/profit gain) OTHER then that...everything else in this industry is about taste/opinion ...yet I always hear nintendo bashing...I just laugh cause I know it doesnt affect them in the long run...check it out just watch :)

@Itzsfo0: That's a huge wall of text, and all it shows is you have no idea what the article even said.

Its not 60 million CONSOLES sold. No. Stupid.
Its 60 million pieces of SOFTWARE sold for said console. I.E. 60 million games on the Wii-U in total.

Which yeah, that's a horrendous number. For comparison, GTA V alone has solid over 54 million copies. That's one single game that almost equals the entirety of the Wii-U's library. 60 million is a terrible number.
Or here, how about another comparison?

The Wii-U has been out for 3 years. In that time, it has sold 60 million software units.
3 year after the PS3 launched, it had sold 267 million software units.
4 years after the 360 launched, it had sold 395 million software units.
4 years after the Wii launched, it had sold 520 million software units.

Are you starting to get the picture? Its not about being "Anti-Nintendo" or having any hate for the Wii-U. Its recognizing that their software sales are fucking abysmal.

@timmyp1982: I think it is something that you're hoping to happen more than the reality of it. Nintendo has the most profitable first party games, and those who buy Nintendo, invest highly in them. It doesn't take Nintendo to sell 50 million consoles to be profitable. However, Nintendo consoles will never make a dent in the market if they can't bring good 3rd party support to their consoles. They have been struggling to do so since the N64 days (also didn't help that Sony paid royally to get publishers to publish only on PlayStation).

Nintendo may never have the success of the Wii again. However, Nintendo will explode financially once they go mobile. While people here have been questioning Nintendo's new focus on mobile, I already know that their franchises will be a booming success in the mobile market. Heck, Sonic Dash has been a big hit for Sega. You put Mario and Zelda on a mobile platform, it'll be money that never stops coming in.

I personally do not think the NX will make a big splash on the market. The problem with the WiiU was that it was rushed. It came with too many 3DS ports, confusing marketing, and literally put out there with little market research. It will never catch on. I, too, have a WiiU, and yes...it has some good exclusives, but there is so much wrong with it. The UI is inane, online...though free...is no more advanced than Xbox Live in 2002. Nintendo needs to rid of the restrictions to protect the children. I want to voice chat in Mario Kart. Why can't I? Provide a parental lock that bans voice chat and leave it to the parents.

I don't see Nintendo failing financially. They've built a good system where much of their development titles can be reskinned and altered without having to continue to create games from the ground up. However, Nintendo will never be the #1 console on the market again.

Props to them for being transparent about the figures, unlike MS who likes to hide them, or now, not report them at all.

People just don't know how fun and addictive Splatoon is. I have sunk 6, maybe 8 hours into it and am only level 12. All these unlock able weapons and upgrades, and Nintendo once you buy the game doesn't nickel and dime you, They update the game and add all sorts of levels, weapons, and content as time goes. Splatoon 2 could be what Brawl was to Melee.

@harlemstruggle: You can't really call something "addictive" if you've only played it for a handful of hours. 6 hours is nothing.

@SterlingFox: That was 20 days ago, when I bought it. You are late to the party. "addictive" it is. I bought Splatoon just in time to get acclimated and for the massive update.

@harlemstruggle: Ehh, I played it for a week or two, but it got repetitive. They need to change how the levels get selected. Playing the same 2 levels over the course of a day makes it get stale.

Nintendo is in a funny spot, being that since they might not get the explosive sales numbers of competition, they also are making profit off of nearly everything they sell, being the primary supporters of their own stuff, meaning that they are rolling in that dough and doing fine. The Call of Duties and Assassin's Creeds HAVE to make staggering numbers to support their bloated production costs, whereas Nintendo does it's thing on the cheap, cranks out amazing games, and enjoys stability from moderate numbers. Plus, ya know...Pokemon and their handheld numbers could likely keep them afloat for the next decade by themselves.

I may have a gaming PC and PS4 (excited for Fallout 4 and Dark Souls III!), but I'm also enjoying Mario Maker and love the hell out of my Wii U and 3DS. It's a good time to be a gamer! :D

@Oloryn: You're right. Nintendo may be lagging behind in sales numbers, but the hot sellers for their consoles are mostly first party software, giving them a much bigger cut of the profits. Microsoft and Sony get a lot less revenue from all these third party devs creating content for their consoles.

Mario games, super smash, zelda, nintendo's not going away. They may not have 15 million console sales, but they have dedicated fans.

@Daveof89: I think this is why you see this push by Microsoft to refocus on their 1st party titles and exclusives. Especially since they lost the lead to Sony when it comes to third parties. I think Microsoft's ultimate plan is position themselves in such a way that they can keep things if the primary focus is on their 1st party offerings the way Nintendo has and had to when they lost third party developers.

Having third party developers is great. Being at the mercy of them for your content is not. That can kill your system if you don't have anything unique to offer beside them if that support suddenly changes for whatever reason.

Only 10.73 million worldwide. Despite Mario Maker and Splatoon selling well. While these games have done quite well at retail. They have not been system sellers. This holiday season seems to have nothing in store for Nintendo Legend of Zelda was originally going to be released this Xmas, in addition to Star Fox. But Star Fox was delayed until March 2016. Nintendo may not even reach 11 million Wii U systems sold by November 18th 2015. The systems 3rd birthday.

It may not get the numbers that the PS4 or the X1 has, but it's a great console to own with plenty of fun games to play.

Poor sales number, but pretty impressive hardware/software ratio (69,05/10,73 = 6,44). I don't know if that's really something to cheer about, but it seems that the average Wii U owner owns several games.

@yukushi: Unlikely. Zelda used to be a powerhouse in the industry, but now its mostly just bought by Nintendo fans.
The Xbox has plenty of system selling games that are bigger than Zelda is at this point. So the gap will only widen more as more with the continued release of games like Halo, Gears of War, and big multi-platform games that the Wii-U doesn't get.

@yukushi:

No real dog in this fight and not sure where you're getting the XB1 numbers from but...WiiU released a year earlier than the XB1 and the XB1 has 37.1% higher sales (10.5*1.3714=14.4). This seems like a big difference to me.

And with most of Nintendo's top games for the platform (minus Zelda) already out, and Nintendo switching focus to their next console the NX, I don't think those numbers are likely to change for the better going forward.

Personally, I hope Nintendo takes this as an opportunity to put out a console that is powerful enough to achieve parity with the next Sony and Microsoft consoles (not their current consoles, the next ones) so they have a console that can play all of the multiplatform titles AND their own first party exclusives. That would be an interesting value pitch for the next generation.

They're handicapping themselves by continually putting out consoles that can't play CURRENT 3rd party games. Sure, the WiiU can play PS3/360 games, but most people who were going to buy those already have for their 360/PS3.

A reference both to the console being powerful enough to run those games and also the number of previous generation games, like Mass Effect 3, that got ported over to the WiiU.

@Bread_or_Decide: Japan alone accounts for 1.17 million copies sold. This is a problem that Nintendo's going to continue to have over the years as their home country shifts to different kinds of games and mediums while other major markets still enjoy their large world multiplayer console games.
