WildStar Launches Free-to-Play Closed Beta

Carbine Studios and publisher NCsoft have announced the launch of a free-to-play closed beta phase for its sci-fi MMORPG, WildStar. The transition from a subscription model to free-to-play will introduce a host of new content for the MMO, and all current subscribers are automatically able to access the closed beta. Players who are not currently subscribed and wish to sign up for a closed beta key can do so on the website.

New features and content being introduced in the free-to-play version of WildStar include:

• The Alpha Sanctum
  A new instance that "brings players into WildStar's world storyline much earlier in the game than ever before."
• Madame Fay's Fortunes
  A randomized reward system that can "turn a tiny investment into big, big shinies."
• New character introduction
  The character creation system has been updated, and players can choose where they wish to start in WildStar based on their past experience with MMO games.
• Loyalty program
  Players who have invested money into the game either through subscription payments, redeeming in-game C.R.E.D.D., or purchasing MTX items will now earn points in WildStar's Loyalty Program. Points can be used to access additional gear, items, pets, mounts, and more.

Other in-game tweaks have been added which include a revamped sprint function, navpoints, daily player login rewards, and more. Developer Carbine Studios intends to garner feedback from the closed beta phase to prepare for Wildstar's free-to-play launch this fall.

Wildstar was first launched in June last year on a subscription model. The game was positively received in GameSpot's review, scoring a seven out of ten. GameSpot interviewed developers from Carbine Studios earlier this year about the decision to shift to free-to-play, and how this would affect the current game.
