Will Solo's Star Wars Story Be Continued?

Solo: A Star Wars Story may have had the worst opening weekend for the franchise in a long, long time, but based on the accounts of those who actually went to see it, Solo is actually pretty good. If you're one of those people, once you get that one big question out of the way, you'll probably be wondering whether we're ever going to see more of Qi'ra, the Crimson Dawn, Donald Glover's stellar Lando Calrissian, and everything else in Solo.

Given the movie's tepid reception, a Solo sequel or follow-up might seem unlikely. But Solo's writers deliberately wrote in plenty of hanging threads that future Star Wars movies can pick up.

"We intentionally left it pregnant with possibilities," Solo co-writer Jonathan Kasdan told GameSpot. "One thing we have learned from Star Wars is that it's great, if you've gotta make another one of these, to have left some strings open to pursue. And it's much harder when you don't--when you tie everything neatly up."

His co-writer and father, Lawrence Kasdan--who also co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi--said he's "always drawn to hanging threads."

"It's not about sequels; it's about, dramatically, things don't tie up in my life that way, and I don't expect them to tie up like that for these characters," Lawrence said, adding that he thinks that's why Empire is "as good as it is."

Solo's dramatic loose ends are myriad, from Qi'ra's rise within Crimson Dawn to Han and Chewie's journey to Tatooine to enter the service of, presumably, Jabba the Hutt. One of Solo's funniest scenes involves Donald Glover's Lando recording a dramatized audio diary he calls "The Calrissian Chronicles," which is one thread we'd love to see picked up again. Jonathan Kasdan agreed on that.

"I kept trying to slip in this idea, like, 'Hey Donald, if you ever want to shoot eight hours of you just talking into that holo recorder, I'm down,'" he said, laughing. "[Glover] is just too cool for the world at this point. I think there's a very good chance we'll see more Lando down the road, and hopefully more 'Chronicles.'"

In addition, he said the relationship between Han, Chewie, and Jabba would be worth exploring. "Jabba is just as rich a relationship and friendship in Han and Chewie's life as Han and Chewie, in a way, it's like your obnoxious friend," he said. "So I would love to see him meet that guy, and we definitely wanted to point toward it."

Given the rumblings of both a Boba Fett movie and an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, it sounds like there will be plenty of opportunities in the future for Disney to continue the stories begun or set up in Solo. With what we learn about Crimson Dawn's leadership at the end of Solo, a tie-in with the Obi-Wan movie is a no-brainer. And it's a fact that Han Solo and Boba Fett have history together before the events of the original Star Wars trilogy; Han, Chewie, and even Lando could show up in the Boba Fett movie. Heck, Qi'ra could hire Fett to track Han down for some reason.

The new Star Wars movies have in many ways relied too heavily on what's come before, but there are some exciting possibilities for the future, as well. Would you want to see Solo's stories continued? Let us know in the comments below.
