Kudos for including the origin material on the USSR and the gaming culture that birthed the company. It was really interesting and helps explain their DLC policy and the trust they place in their customers. They treat their fans like adults, which is a welcome change from the default behavior, treating customers like imbeciles who will pay for broken games, cut content in the form of DLC, and then act like they are one step from becoming a software pirate tycoon as well. Good on them. The only complaint I have is that, if I ever was going to consider traveling to Poland for vacation, this series cured me. It looked seriously bleak in the vid (though I realize it was just one area). That tower (I forget the name) looked like it was built out of Opression (tm) brand building blocks, seriously.

@shadowpxl6661@AZRogue: USSR occupied western Poland and later the country became one of the satellite countries as part the Warsaw Pact. I think he meant that.

I didn't realize until today May18th is a holiday in much of Canada (maybe all?) so people who pre-order online might get it a day or two later. Sometimes when that happens they ship the game extra early, in this case it would have to be Friday, so that it might arrive on the release day Tuesday.

These series are amazing Gamespot! I seriously come here only because of the feature series and always find new things to read on the site. It's very hard to find a series about video games that dig deeper like this series did by tying the soviet union with the concepts behind The Witcher series. Raise the salary for the filmmakers and whoever is creating the scripts for these docs, they are amazing!!!!!

Guys.. anyone knows if you buy the physical PC version, do you need the DVD inserted to play?

The physical PC copy comes with "dvds" so I assume several discs. I have been playing on STEAM forever.. I have no idea how it works noways, especially with those non-steam games.

I am also finding it hard to decide between the physical PC version or the Steam version. The Steam version includes pretty much everything from the solid copy, expect the "compendium", and is much cheaper: 20% off preorder + loyalty discount. The digital version also comes with artbook which is not included with the physical. However a solid copy is neat, and the package is beefy still. Any thoughts?

@GunEye: Why bother with the Steam version at all? If you want DRM-free from the people who actually made the game you can buy it on GOG.com (good old games).

GOG is owned by CDProjekt who made the game so if you buy directly from them you help the developer even more without being tied to any DRM.

@GunEye: I think so, only MMOs don't need dvd inserted to play the game. It's the DRM thing.

So you think you DO need the disc inserted to play?

I thought DRM was about less restrictions. What does DRM mean btw? I am leaning more toward the Steam version. I have both tw1 and tw2 on on Steam atm. I don't know how big a deal is the Steam DRM..

@GunEye: Its been a while since i did it (dont buy much physical copies these days), but i think most of the time if you buy a physical copy you can still activate the game in steam with the serial code, so you can still play it through steam without the disc.

Not sure if that has any relevance to your decision, but i thought i'd mention it.

Not sure if it will be needed anyway. CD Projekt have kind of made it their thing to avoid all the anti-piracy stuff that makes the game experience worse for the people who actually buys the game

As a sidenote i find it weird any game still have that thing where you have to play with the disc inserted. It made sense back when cds and later dvds had almost as much storage space as the average hard drive and they just packed all the music and cutscenes on them. Back then it kind of worked as an anti-piracy thing as well as you'd either get pirated games with music/cutscenes/voices removed or they took way too much storage space.

I don't think there's ever been this much coverage for a video game. But then again, maybe it's also because CDPR has been so forthcoming about everything.

@PeterDuck: There's a lot of new footage incoming today (27th) as the embargo of the trip of all the youtubers and press that was invited to Poland to CDPR is lifted then and we will get to see at least 45min of footage, impressions, console versions (so I heard) etc.

@Darkhol0w@Gamertech100: I never liked the Uber Sampling. even with gtx980 it kills the framerate, and only make the visuals worse in my opinion. I really don't see any improvement except that I lose over 60% fps.

So I have a question - Can one play this game without having played any of the other games? I never did any of the other ones but this looks like it might be fun.... But sometimes it can feel like one is coming in in the third act when you go to the third game in a series...

@wookietim: yeah, CDPr claims this game is the best to start with actually. Also, the reason they changed the logo (3 in it is now a mask of wild hunt rider) was so people would feel intimidated by the game being 3rd game

@wookietim: They'll probably do a quick overview of whats happened at the beginning. But you will miss out of possible stuff they carry over from previous games.

I work Wednesday next; good, I can finish the first Witcher, and perhaps jump back into the second one. I finished the second already two years ago on 360, but perhaps finishing the first (which is being a pretty great experience overall aside from some hurdles), two will be better than it initially was, which was good, but kind of disappointing. So far, aside from the way combat works, I think I'm liking the first better. I'm interested to see though now.

I hope The Witcher 3 got a world that you can actually do something in, unlike Dragon Age Inquisition where you couldn't, like the desert "A big pile of nothing", that was true, what's the meaning of making a vast world that you can't do anything in?, everything is placed on the map, just go there, go there, go there done, still people think it was the best RPG ever made, i wonder how many RPGs they've played in their life.

I hope they create a world where you get rewarded well for exploring, not you go around for hours and then you stumble on a letter marked "Return to sender", oh no, the sender might be looking for this letter, i better get it going to deliver as fast as i can, never mind, the AI is scripted, doesn't matter if i deliver it now in 2 minutes or 200 hours, he's still gonna stand there looking into the wall saying "Thanks!, i've been looking for this one".

@BlueCryztal: Agree with you about DA:I. I was a huge Dragon Age fan. I loved lore, characters and everything about it, but this mmo vibe... I can't get over it. I can't understand (remember: as a huge DA fan) why this game has a GOTY. After this huge disappointment I can't wait for The Witcher (even if I don't like to play as a pre-defined character)

@toffifee: yeah, and by saying this you mean endless fetch quest fest? Enormous amount of fade rifts to close? Ton of boring quests filled with stupid letters to read? And absolutely ZERO interesting side quests with cutscenes? Oh, and dull Inquisitor who is always nice to everyone with three dialogue responses: 1. be nice and kind, 2. be nice and kind, 3. be nice and kind. I'm not a hater. Hell, Dragon Age is my favorite franchise and I'm simply heartbroken. BioWare, thanks for this MMO structure.

@BlueCryztal: Yeah, me too, but hopefully filled with more meaningful tasks, and not the typical contracts where you simply slay monsters. Also, I agree there was a lack of stuff to do in terms of meaningful stuff in the wide open areas of Inquisition, but I still thought that game was superb.

@NTM23@BlueCryztal: here in the interviews they talked about quests such as: "hey, witcher, go ringing the bell, and find my goat! a goat? yes, my goat!". If CDPr will deliver what they promise to, this game will be amazing, not empty at all, with all kinds of quests/stories to find. check on youtube (starting today they can start posting stuff they recorded during their stay in poland): Gopher, Melonie Mac, Angry Joe, Dodger, and few more. they didnt post anything just yet, but we will get quite a lot of reviewing from them this week, and they something around 12 hours of playing
