Witcher 4 Dev Explains Why Ciri's The Star This Time, Confirms Geralt Will Appear

"She's such a nuanced character," the game's director says.

The Witcher 4 got its first--and very impressive--cinematic trailer during The Game Awards. Among other things, we learned the game will focus on Ciri as the main character. The developers at CD Projekt Red have now discussed why they wanted to have Ciri be the star and have confirmed that, as suspected, Geralt will appear in the game in some fashion.

Game director Sebastian Kalemba told PC Gamer that it was a "natural choice" for The Witcher 4 to tell its story from Ciri's perspective, building off the narrative in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

"There's plenty of room for her and for us, also, to build on top of [her]. There's so much room for exploration, and because she's such a nuanced character, the beginning of her journey gives us freedom and so many opportunities to be able to dig in and use [that] for good," he said.

Ciri was a playable character in some parts of The Witcher 3, and executive producer Gosia Mitręga said she is "less defined as a character," which gives the developers opportunities for storytelling.

Geralt, the hero of CD Projekt's previous Witcher games, will appear in The Witcher 4 as well. Kelamba said Geralt is important to the developers and to Ciri, so he's "definitely" going to appear. His voice was heard at the very end of the game's recent trailer, but that's it so far.

"I can't tell you more, but I think the promise is enough. But we believe that this journey, this new saga, this new trilogy is definitely for her," he said.

As Kelamba said, The Witcher 4 kicks off a new trilogy of Witcher games, which are in development alongside CD Projekt's other games, including a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel and a Witcher remake.

Recently, Geralt voice actor Doug Cockle walked back his comments about Geralt appearing in The Witcher 4 after the studio "slapped" him for talking about it.

The game's impressive CG trailer at The Game Awards was created by Platige Image and was pre-rendered in a custom version of Unreal Engine 5 running on an "unannounced Nvidia GeForce RTX GPU." The trailer uses assets and models from the game, but is more meant to be a mood piece that aims to show "the kind of experience the game is aspiring to provide."

Having some other lead when you have such an epic character the Geralt is and the living and breathing Doug Cockle is practically madness!

@tommytong: Unless he’s already completed his three game story arc and the finale set him up to pass the touch to another character.

It's 2024, of course the lead character is a female. Let's see. Returnal, Stellar Blade, Hellblade, TLoU Part 2, Control, Horizon, the upcoming Ghost of Yotei and the just-announced new Naughty Dog game and now this game...

However there have always been female leads in games such as in Metroid, Tomb Raider, Bayonetta, Perfect Dark and more.

So I don't know, in a way it does feel like there's a bit of an agenda but is it as egregious as some are making it out to be?

@Furwings: I'd be the first to yell "OMG girl boss again?!?!", but I don't think it applies in this case. Ciri is a well written female character with well thought out reason for her abilities. I think most people are fine with that. What we don't like is a character like Rey from the new Star Wars who we are given no reason for her powers/abilities and are expected to buy it because she's a girl boss. Ciri is just a cool character.

The cannon ending left ciri as empress, why they went this way. By the time witcher 3 ends monsters were all but gone and the fact that he defeated the wildhunt reduced monster influence even further.

This sound like some BS daughter vs daddy emperor main campaign plot. Blegh

Would have preferred a prequel with vesemir, he mentioned that in the previous century a lot of thing happened.

If anyone thought Witcher 4 would star a different character, you must not have finished Witcher 3. It was always meant to be Ciri leading in W4. It’s no surprise whatsoever. I’m glad that they continued where they left off.

A character creator is a cool idea, but maybe that’s for a later entry or a spinoff. CDPR has a story to finish telling, so let them do what they do best. The in-game death of Geralt is coming at some point, I can feel it in my bones.

@joecollin: They should do what they did at the end of The Witcher 3. It looks like Geralt is going to die, and then you see flashbacks to all the choices you made in Ciri's relationship with him, and if you took the right path, he lives and gets to retire to a farm somewhere peaceful.

@mogan: correct and that seems to be the canon ending. Retirement is rarely permanent. No way Geralt decides to slump around in retirement forever. I bet we get to play a segment as Geralt like we did with Ciri in W3.

No complaints from me. I prefer female protagonists.
