With PS5 On The Way, Sony's Big First-Party Games Still Releasing On PS4

They may appear on the PS5 too.

Sony apparently plans to bridge the console generation gap in a somewhat different way with the release of the PS5. It's spoken about the possibility of PS4 and PS5 playing together via backward compatibility once the new system is released, but Sony has no plans to leave the nearly 100 million PS4 owners in the past just yet. Given how much recent attention has been given to PS5 and the fact that Sony won't be at E3, you might wonder what's going with its first-party games slated for PS4. Are games like Death Stranding and The Last of Us II still coming to PS4? Sony has reaffirmed that these exclusives are indeed still headed to the current-gen platform.

"For the next three years or so, PS4 will be the engine of SIE's engagement and probability, as we seek to keep the existing owner base engaged and delighted and attract new owners from different markets and different demographics," SIE CEO and president Jim Ryan said during a Sony Investor Relations Day 2019 presentation (via IGN). "In this we will be massively helped by an outstanding roster of new and exclusive games that have yet to be launched."

Now Playing: PS5 Release Window & New Controller Announced - GS News Update

No Caption Provided

Ryan was speaking over a slide at the investor meeting, which featured a graphic (pictured above) with one tile that read "Outstanding roster of exclusive AAA games still to come," followed by thumbnails of three upcoming PS4 games: The Last of Us Part II, Death Stranding, and Ghost of Tsushima.

This doesn't rule out the possibility that these games are also released on PS5, but Ryan and the rest of Sony are not ready to cut off the flow of PS4 games just yet.

We recently saw footage of the PS5's insanely-fast load times, thanks in large part to the system's newly-equipped solid-state drives. Despite some of the impressive power packed into the system, PlayStation 4 lead architect Mark Cerny told Wired writer Peter Rubin that the PS5 will have an "appealing" price point: "I believe that we will be able to release it at an SRP [suggested retail price] that will be appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set."

WUTTTT, they are acting like this is a big deal? It should be a given using the same game infrastructure. If you can have cross-platform gaming, cross-gen gaming should be a walk in the park. Com'on Sony, you can do better. How about they stop the evil practice of adding PS1-PS3 titles on PSNow & not giving those titles for free to the people who bought them on the PS3. They make it so that you can no longer buy those games on their store and are forced to play them on PSNow, this is how you share your games....through PSNow!!!! Microsoft is giving gamers backward compatible games for free & evil Sony is literally wiping the games from their store & not even making it so that they can even buy them again...very anti-consumerism if you ask me!

so basically sony won't be at e3, tlou 2 is finished, and really nearly finished, but they need to hire some more people before they can start to finish, they talk about backwards compatibility like they're doing the customer a faver when infact you'd have to be braindead to not include it.

just seems to me like sony shot it's load and by the time these games are out the PS5 will be here. kinda throws a spanner in my plans to pick up a Pro. Balls in your court Kojima.

Would be pretty dumb to switch to a console that just came out and ignore the now 100 million or so people that own a PS4. And looking as the PS5 will be backwards compatible by default due to a similar architecture, all it would require are some graphical upgrades and adjustments to take advantage of the PS5's power.

Im only worried about the SSD capacity, seeing the mess devs make in this gen with all the "one day patch" thing (and subsequent patches), we could end with a console with a limited retro capability, how many PS4 games could need the 50gb space to work properly in the PS5? I bet the 100%, we all know that the 1tb disc isn't enough ( I had to buy a 2tb disc for my PS4 and now is full) so the PS5 will need a great SSD capacity, just to work as a decent retro console.

@KiriharaZro: SSDs are getting cheaper, and falling quickly in price. 2 TB drives can be had for $200 or less, and there's 4 TB drives out now.

SSD is a no-brainer. Honestly, surprised they aren't using an m2 slot. I just got a 1 TB m.2 drive for $149... OEM Samsung 970 mlc.

It's super fast!

@KiriharaZro: Have you tried deleting things? I'm sure I own enough games to fill several TB, yet I'm perfectly fine with a 500GB SSD and the up to a dozen games I can have installed on it at once. But I guess if you still only have access to dial up speeds and it takes days for you to download a game, then that might be a problem.

@Atzenkiller: I have a 3TB external I I still had to delete half my library to use new stuff. Space is one of those thing that however much you have you'll still fill it because you just don't feel the need to delete anything when you have loads and then suddenly you realise you're back at the limit. Now, I assume I could still play PS4 games on the PS5 via my external drive but then I lose the benefit of the SSD. Not sure what they're going to do as far as extra storage goes, because if the PS5 games rely on SSD speeds then non SSD externals will be next to useless for it.

@Carpetfluff: Yeah, why would you delete any games that you haven't played in months? I mean there is no logical reason to do so. You might suddenly wake up one night and get a strong urge to play a certain game right then and there. For moments like this it's good to have all games you've ever bought stored on dozens of hard drives.

@Atzenkiller: Only if you're unorganized, scatterbrained casual I guess. I get games, I focus on them, and get them done, shoot for the platinum if reasonable and move on. If you need to jump around and play 10 different games, where is the focus or fun in that? You break the immersion and momentum of the games.

@Atzenkiller: LOL, so if you didn't touched a game in months you're not allowed to wake up in the middle of the night to play YOUR game in YOUR console, just because you MUST delete games because the devs are lazy and release unfinished games that need great space in your console? That's the most stupid excuse I ever read, maybe the next will be: "Once you complete a game delete it and throw it in the trash bin, because, well you already play it, why you want to have it there stored in your console, or worse, in your shelf or bookcase?"

@KiriharaZro: What exactly is it supposed to be an excuse for? For not getting decent internet? I can download any game in about an hour, and games that are less than 50gb in size take even less time than that. So would reason would I have to keep games installed in my console that I'm no longer playing? If I want to play them again I'll download them again. Even if you like collecting things, the game is still available in your digital library so you can look at it as much as you want. Or download it whenever you actually feel like playing it again.

@Atzenkiller: It's obvious you don't understand whats we're talking about here, isnt about a decent internet connection, its about we are forced to delete our games because of the game's negligent development by the game studios. You say "You might suddenly wake up one night and get a strong urge to play a certain game right then", well f*cking yeah! its my right, its my game, its my urgency. Why should I limit me whatever I want to play just because someone don't do his/her job well?

If you are someone who never touch again a game already played, good fo you, but out there are many, many gamers like me who just want to grab a game, insert the disc and begin playing it whenever I want, instead wait download it again because the dev's ineptitude.

@Atzenkiller: Try to do that when you have downloaded almost 30gb of DLC for several games, then when you want to play them, download everything again. Problem is that we customers always have to adapt to what the devs want, unfinished games that need to be patched/installed, limited capacity of HDD and now SSD, and above all of that, people like you who justify it. And no, I dont have a dial up connection, but I don't want to waste my time deleting/downloading games just because devs are lazy and sell unfinished games forcing us to waste space.

@KiriharaZro: A full game is around 50gb big and I can download that in about an hour or so. If you don't have the patience for that then that's a different issue.

@Atzenkiller: good for you for your patience, after the 1 hour of download you must install it, so an hour and a half later maybe you can play. But then when you buy a new game you're going to delete that 50gb game again, but what the hell it was only a 1 hour and a half of your time!

@KiriharaZro: You don't own a console, do you? Installs on PS4 are instant. There is no installing. Again, if you don't have even that much patience then you should work on that. If anything just so you don't sound like some addict when talking about it. Or maybe look at how much time you waste each day on bullshit. It might give you proper perspective on how bad a 1 hour long automatic download that requires zero input from you really is. You don't even have to leave your console running anymore as it was during last gen.

@Atzenkiller: Oh really? with all the DLC you buy for it? LOL Now I "don't own a console"? you're really a retard because you still don't understand the subject. What ever I do with MY time isn't a matter of your concern, so don't come here with your childish argument of "look at how much time you waste each day on bullshit", since downloading again a deleted game IS WASTING TIME IN BULLSHIT. Now you see how stupid you are?

Nor sure what to think about that. Is he really saying that they won't release any game pushing the Ps5 for the first two years (assuming it launches next year)? Surely that can't be right. If so generations are dead, but Sony has stated before that they are not. They have to release some power showcases.

I'm actually really looking forward to playing some of my current games off the PS5's SSD. That alone could improve aspects of many of them quite a bit.

@Carpetfluff: It's just loading times. Reducing them won't make a game more fun, just reduce the annoyance for games that have loading times of up to 2 mins when installed on an HDD. Like Witcher 3, but even there it's only an issue if you keep reloading your saves all the time.

@Atzenkiller: Okay, ignoring the fact that I didn't say it would make them 'more fun'. You're so wrong. You clearly missed the whole point of why they did that demo with Spiderman. SSD will obviously improve loading times, but way more importantly it allows for much faster data streaming times so...for example, those hitches when Days Gone has to stream the next bit of map in...fixed. Hitches in any game that has to stream the world ahead of the player; gone or much improved and that also applies to the visuals because if you can stream the high quality textures in faster then those moments where you stare at a muddy sign or wall in the Division 2 before it becomes sharp...gone. Sluggish menus? Fixed that too. It will literally allow games to play more smoothly and look more polished before you even get to a point where they could do more with the extra grunt of the machine in a patch.

@Carpetfluff: I haven't seen any of the things you mentioned in a while. Indie garbage and poorly optimised games tend to have these issues, but even the best hardware won't completely prevent it.

Let's be real. They will release cross gen, as with any game that releases near the launch of the PS5. Buy it now and double dip later. Or just wait for PS5 and get the better version.

Umm, why does this even need to be considered? PS5 has PS4 backward compat, of course they are going to develop it for PS4 also. There's no reason anyone sane in the head would do otherwise.

So, you're saying they're still releasing games on the system that is out and not making games exclusively for the system that isn't yet? Wow, no wonder the execs at Sony are at the top of the food chain there with impressive decision making like that.

That's great, but this is one occasion where I'm perfectly happy to get a next gen console sooner rather than later. Just like the end of last gen, we're starting to see games that crush current consoles, even the Pro and XX, except this time we're expected to endure it for like 3 years instead of the one year that last gen endured.

If devs were actually concerned about optimizing their games and making them look great without melting consoles, it would be fine, but they're generally not, so I'd rather have that PS5.

@barcaazul: Since all PS4 games will be backwards compatible anyway they'll probably offer you an upgrade that adds graphical improvements and other stuff, basically turning the PS4 version into the PS5 one. But some devs will probably just do it for free. The generation barrier will be gone, same as it for PCs, so the only difference between PS4 and PS5 games will be that the latter have been designed to run on the new hardware and so will take full advantage of it.

@barcaazul: im hoping for major patches when the PS5 recognizes the PS4 copy of a game but these companies are hoes and remaster money is ever so tempting so PS4 games may lack performance increases in order to encourage "double dipping" on the consumers end on shit they already have. Wishing the former is the reality though ( I mean they demo 8x load speed increase of Spiderman PS4 and i've heard they have the latest TLOU running @4K Native @60fps so a boost of sorts akin to Pro has to be the reality right?)

@barcaazul: With PS4, some titles you could buy on PS3 and then pay $10 to upgrade to the PS4 version (still need PS3 disc inside the PS4).

They could continue it, but it wasn't popular even back then.
