Wolfenstein Dev Sees Series As Trilogy, Talks Mecha-Hitler

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus may not be the last of the new Wolfenstein games.

One of the big announcements from E3 2017 was that a new Wolfenstein game is in development. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is the follow-up to The New Order, and it takes main character BJ Blazkowicz to a Nazi-occupied United States. According to creative director Jens Matthies, this may not be the last game in the modern Wolfenstein series--and Mecha-Hitler may one day return to the games.

Appearing on Giant Bomb's E3 live show, Matthies fielded a question about Mecha-Hitler, the imposing, robotic Nazi leader from some of the original Wolfenstein games. To answer, he revealed that developer Machine Games has hoped that the new Wolfenstein series would be three parts--hinting at a possible reemergence of the antagonist later on.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Wolfenstein Dev Sees Series As Trilogy, Talks Mecha-Hitler

"We always envisioned this as a trilogy," he said. "If we get to make the third one--once we introduce Mecha-Hitler, you can't go up from there."

Matthies' statement should be taken with a grain of salt, and he tempers expectations himself. There's no third game in development yet, and publisher Bethesda would have to greenlight it first, presumably based on how The New Colossus performs. But it's exciting nonetheless to envision a modern, high-fidelity Mecha-Hitler appearing in a later Wolfenstein game. Also worth noting is that Matthies and Machine Games are seemingly not counting The Old Blood, a standalone expansion to The New Order, as one of the entries in the trilogy.

The New Colossus launches on October 27 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. We learned a lot about it at E3, like the fact that it has a submarine hub. You can also check out our breakdown of the reveal trailer here.

I hope there will be a third game, I love these games

They make the shooting as much fun as can possibly be had in a FPS.

I'm pretty much done with this company putting Uncharted in my Wolfenstein.

Id laid the floorplan for a great single player shooter last year with Doom, which was easily one of the best single player FPS games I've ever played.

They need to cut the "pull me up bro/let's have feels and sex scenes" crap out of Wolfenstein; it makes good playground gossip for tweens but resting the entire IP on this sort of thing ensures I'll play it once, feel really awkward during the B-level dialog and plot, then never touch it again.

Let BJ get back to what he does best; murdering legions of Nazis. Honestly, the gameplay in TNO and TOB was pretty great; focus harder on that.

@Richardthe3rd: I agree with you for the most part. Its like the actual 'production' values were ignored in making the game. HORRIBLE b-tier sound effects, even on a great sound system. Pointless sex scene at the beginning. Bland and predictable story. But the gameplay itself, is fairly fun and well made.

I think if they use Doom as the basis on how to do the next game, we have a full on instant classic. But I bet it'll be closer to the new order.

@Richardthe3rd: To each his own. I really enjoyed TNO with its high-level action FPS. I won't lie, I personally thought it is still today one of the best FPS I have played in years (DOOM was also really great).

As for the plot, I honestly never felt the cutscenes were getting in the way. I enjoyed the story elements to it. My only complaint is that I wished the long-term choice you have to make in the first chapter would've had real consequences/differences.

@naetas: The gunplay WAS really good, it's just they chopped it up with extremely dull hub scenes where you had to suffer through NPC's with as much personality as a wet blanket.

I really felt like this stuff was jarring, and the story/plot elements were really just poor IMO. If it spent more time being a shooter, TNO would've been a masterpiece.

@Richardthe3rd: I disagree. I like that they created a shooter that manged to have really strong action and characters, story, and world I could get invested in. And I didn't feel like there were so many cutscenes that it got in the way of the all the shooting.

@Mogan: The characters in TNO made me wish I could defect to the Nazi's. The dude playing the guitar as the death squad came for him? I envied the death squad. I felt that way for much of the NPC's in the game, Nazi, resistance or otherwise.

Stupid, stupid crap. They tried to make it so emotional, so artful, and instead they got in the way of the part of the game that was really special; the gameplay.

Get the Uncharted out of Wolfenstein.

@Richardthe3rd: Well, I hope they don't do what you want. I actually thought Jimmy Hendrix's death scene was really good.

But The Old Blood was a prequel. This will be the 3rd game in the series.

While it may be a little premature to already be welcoming the news of a third game in the series I think this case is the exception to the rule, especially when you consider the genre it is in. For many out there who had the chance to watch Bethesda’s E3 conference Wolfenstein: The new Colossus was a surprising stand out and only reaffirmed their belief that good storytelling could still be done in a genre that is dominated more by multiplayer loadouts and add-ons.

Even though it is unlikely I hope MachineGames’ focus on narrative seeps its way into other heavy hitter FPS of the genre. After all, it’s not like it’s something that is being overdone.
