World of Warcraft lost 800,000 subscribers during the April-June quarter, publisher Activision Blizzard announced today as part of its latest earnings report. As of June 30, the game had 6.8 million subscribers, which is down from the 7.6 million subscribers as of March 31.

Activision says the downturn in subscribers came mostly in the East. The company called the decline "seasonal" and pointed out that the dip in subscribers was similar to what we saw in the second quarter of 2012, ahead of the release of World of Warcraft expansion Mists of Pandaria.

The next World of Warcraft expansion is Warlords of Draenor, which launches this fall for PC. The expansion's release date will be announced during a special event next week in Los Angeles. Though the expansion isn't out yet, it has already sold 1.5 million units in pre-purchases, Activision Blizzard said today.

Though World of Warcraft's subscriber count is down, revenue from the game is up, Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime said. He did not provide a specific revenue figure, and Actvision Blizzard does not share this information publicly.

Activision Blizzard also announced today that Diablo III has now sold more than 20 million copies. This figure includes sales of Diablo III itself and the expansion Reaper of Souls, which was the top PC game during the quarter in terms of dollars in both North America and Europe, Activision Blizzard said. Diablo III originally launched as a PC-exclusive, but is now available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will be released this month as the Ultimate Evil Edition.

Overall, Activision Blizzard posted better-than-expected earnings results for the quarter. Revenue was $658 million compared to $608 million this time last year. Net income, on the other hand, stood at $45 million, just half of the $90 million the company posted last year during the same quarter. On the bright side, Activision Blizzard reported that a record 73 percent of the company's total revenue came from digital sales.

"Today, we have more opportunities to create great content using new platforms and business models while also expanding into new geographies, and are embracing all of these growth opportunities with the same commitment to excellence that we have demonstrated over the past 23 years," Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in a statement. "As the world's largest and most profitable independent interactive entertainment company, we remain focused on creating the most compelling, engaging games for our dedicated audiences and providing superior returns for our shareholders."

Activision Blizzard is currently holding an earnings call to discuss these results and answer investor and media questions. Check back later for more.

Considering they haven't had a major patch in nearly a year, 6.8 isn't bad at all. People are going to get sick of doing the same content week after week. Subs will be back up around 9m when the new xpac drops.

Time for them to unveil Titan. It amazes me that they are planning 3 more expansions. I can see those plans being downsized if this trend continues.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I know, what I mean is they may very well just scrap it altogether. There was a time where everyone got excited about every little tidbit that came out about the game, that excitement has since dissolved. Nobody even seems to bring it up anymore. I think you're right about it being Destiny like.

@diggyphelps @oflow @ecs33 Hard to stay excited when they released no info at all.

they shoulda just stuck to what worked for them and made a Starcraft MMO.

I also think Blizz is a victim of technology growing exponentially. You cant take forever to bring out a game nowadays like they did with WoW and D3 it will be outdated before its released the way tech is shooting forward.

They should make it free to play they game is old and is repetitive. . They will make their money back from all the expansions packs they will sell.

It's hard to imagine what people are doing during those two years after an expansion is released. An expansion doesn't give you two years of new content. Sure... if you raid or PvP, you'll find a healthy chunk of time spent doing that, but if you don't make those commitments there's not a whole lot to see and do given the time span. I think they'll find more success cranking out expansions every year from people who don't raid. It will be interesting to see how they handle the raiders given that a year is a very short time and typically once the next expansion comes out, nobody cares about the older raids, thus that content goes out of date very quickly.

I bought Mists of Pandaria two days ago and re-subscribed so personally I'll have all the time I need to see what that expansion has to offer outside of PvP and raids before Warlords of Draenor hits. Give me the subscription numbers a month or two after Warlords drops and we'll see if these 800k people have just run out of things to do and they're waiting for something new.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I wonder, how much content is there to discover (story/quest-wise) in WoW for completely new players? I hear that there are areas that nobody ever goes to anymore because they don't have good rewards or whatever.

But I wonder, if those areas are worth one playthrough for completely new players and just generally, how long would it take a new player to visit and fight through ALL areas/bosses in WoW at least. Is that even possible or would you need raidparties for certain areas that never form because nobody wants to do them?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> It's freakin huge! Some old questlines are worth doing that have interesting stories that evolve as you do each quest in that line. But you don't know which ones they are offhand. So you end up doing lots of boring quests sucking up time. All the Dungeons are fun to explore a few times. It can also be fun helping others through a dungeon. I always loved the fact that WOW didn't instance their dungeons so you could always run across others while doing them. And even end up in PVP while exploring a dungeon.

Can I just ask, am I the only person who still enjoys World Of Warcraft to date?

I don't want to sound like a fan boy or anything but I have played many free to play and pay to play MMORPG games and the only one that I have enjoyed enough to carry on playing through the years is WoW, people seem to want this game to die, but what for? why hate a game you don't play? I mean sure you may not like where the developers are taking the game, and you may regret putting money and time into it, but WoW still has a strong player base with players that still enjoy playing.

If you don't like world of warcraft then look elsewhere for entertainment, don't shun its community and pray for the day the game dies.

<< LINK REMOVED >> its just people mad at themselves for actually investing the time in the game that they did. I enjoyed WoW and played it off and on from launch thru Panda, going to other games and coming back. WoW still has the best endgame of any of the MMOs which is why the others die but WoW keeps chugging along.

The other problem is WoW kind of became a cliche of itself and people dont like to be associated with stuff that the herd deems 'uncool'.

Funny story my teenage nephew was trying to clown me over the weekend saying I was a nerd for having played WoW. I had to remind him 10 years ago he used to watch me play for hours and BEG me to let him play, but now that it been stereotyped in the media etc its 'uncool'.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I've tried getting into other MMOs but WoW has those intangibles that other games just don't have. TERA kept my interest until around level 35-45, Final Fantasy XIV kept my interest until around level 20-30, Guild Wars 2 never kept my interest and personally I thought it sucked... I'm not sure what it is about WoW, other than maybe it being my first MMO.

I recently bought Mists of Pandaria and resubscribed after not having played for maybe a year, and I'm not sitting there bored out of my mind while playing it. Different story when trying to start a new character, but picking up one of my old 80s or 85s, no problem.

I wonder if I'd be one of those people that still plays the original Everquest had that been my first MMO. I remember the only reason I couldn't get into Everquest was because I had no way to pay the subscription cost if my parents weren't willing to fork over credit card details over the internet, and to this day they're still like that.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I still enjoy it very much. My guild still raids 2 days a week and recently have just started running 'Really Bad Flex Raids' where we bring our lowerst geared max characters and see how far we can get. It's a Hoot! Which brings me to my point, even after this long, the friends in the guild far outshine the content of this or any MMO.

Thats what it is really about.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You continually buy the same game every month. At the end of each year you shell out $156 and in exchange you are given approximately $20 worth of additional content. For the price you are charged Blizzard should be adding 2.6 AAA sized games worth of content each year. Subscription games are dying because people are so sick of paying for a King's feats and being given table scraps. WoW has lot almost half of its players in just three years and nearly all sub games are going F2P or hybrid.

Wow cut that expense down to $10/mo. It provided everything in ONE game that buying all those other games had, and it still does lots of things better than 10 other average games combined.

Ah, I miss the vanilla and TBC days. Wrath was a decent expansion but as soon as I went in and was able to AOE down Naxxramas, I knew the game was done for good. It's okay because floods of newkids came in to take over us 40-man raiders' spots, which in the end is all Blizzard cares about, but it would take a lot to get the old, hardcore people back. I guess maybe Blizz wishes they had our devotion again. As a side note from a player that played from beta through WotLK - I went back to test things out again last year and my god what a travesty of a game. Was only able to sub for 1 month before canceling, and this time for good.

But hey Blizzard, great job on Magic Lite and DotA Mini, you sure know how to treat your 90's fans right.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I miss the 40-mans. It was a nightmare to schedule but good God if you had a great raid group who were all on Vent, and who were all mature and level-headed, there's absolutely nothing else like that experience in gaming as a whole. The 25-mans never had the same feel, but maybe that's because I went with a new guild for the first expansion. I dunno, it didn't have the same flavor.

Ever since they released Wrath (decent expansion) it has gone downhill. Some classes got a much needed boost, but overall it was for attracting a new group of people. After they killed off Arthas, they've pretty much just been releasing filler content.

What happened to Deathwing was just terrible.

@advocacy I used to work with a bunch of guys who were big into WoW and played together. They certainly made OK money. They actually got me into it when Cataclysm came out which resulted in a 4-5 month addiction. But it was pretty much work by day, WoW by night, and left over time for wife/kids for my coworkers. Luckily I was still single and living with my rents at the time.
