World of Warcraft lost 800,000 subscribers during the April-June quarter, publisher Activision Blizzard announced today as part of its latest earnings report. As of June 30, the game had 6.8 million subscribers, which is down from the 7.6 million subscribers as of March 31.

Activision says the downturn in subscribers came mostly in the East. The company called the decline "seasonal" and pointed out that the dip in subscribers was similar to what we saw in the second quarter of 2012, ahead of the release of World of Warcraft expansion Mists of Pandaria.

The next World of Warcraft expansion is Warlords of Draenor, which launches this fall for PC. The expansion's release date will be announced during a special event next week in Los Angeles. Though the expansion isn't out yet, it has already sold 1.5 million units in pre-purchases, Activision Blizzard said today.

Though World of Warcraft's subscriber count is down, revenue from the game is up, Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime said. He did not provide a specific revenue figure, and Actvision Blizzard does not share this information publicly.

Activision Blizzard also announced today that Diablo III has now sold more than 20 million copies. This figure includes sales of Diablo III itself and the expansion Reaper of Souls, which was the top PC game during the quarter in terms of dollars in both North America and Europe, Activision Blizzard said. Diablo III originally launched as a PC-exclusive, but is now available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will be released this month as the Ultimate Evil Edition.

Overall, Activision Blizzard posted better-than-expected earnings results for the quarter. Revenue was $658 million compared to $608 million this time last year. Net income, on the other hand, stood at $45 million, just half of the $90 million the company posted last year during the same quarter. On the bright side, Activision Blizzard reported that a record 73 percent of the company's total revenue came from digital sales.

"Today, we have more opportunities to create great content using new platforms and business models while also expanding into new geographies, and are embracing all of these growth opportunities with the same commitment to excellence that we have demonstrated over the past 23 years," Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in a statement. "As the world's largest and most profitable independent interactive entertainment company, we remain focused on creating the most compelling, engaging games for our dedicated audiences and providing superior returns for our shareholders."

Activision Blizzard is currently holding an earnings call to discuss these results and answer investor and media questions. Check back later for more.

They really should release the last SC2 expansion before it gets outdated.

I know it's pain in the ass to develop new contents, but come on.. It's been 7months already since I finished farming gears from this expansion and quit. People are still playing the same thing, just with different character, farming farming and farming. If Blizz dont want players to quit, it really needs to strengthen the social contents inside the game. After some point people enjoy socializing more than killing speechless monsters.

WoW used to be fun back in the day. Then I grew up and so did most of my guild. Getting old sucks. Cherish your college gaming years. ;P

Everquest has had 19 expansions and is still around with its sub-par numbers. Pretty sure WoW will be around at least until Blizz's next MMO hits. Not every Everquest expansion was a great one either, but that doesn't mean it should die, and is precisely why it hasn't. There will always be a true fanbase, the ones who love the game and want to see it prosper. Unfortunately, there will always be those who can't move on from a game that they don't play any longer, for whatever reason, and feel inclined to be bitter about it the rest of their lives.

People seem to think that with a plethora of expansions that the next one must top all others. This is impossible to do, and it is highly illogical to think so. At this point people are either sitting back to enjoy the ride, or have jumped off long ago, at which point it doesn't matter what they think about the current state of WoW.

I'm just glad there are people like Mikepreachwow and Hobbs who are sticking with the game and are the voice of the current fanbase. They continue to play and offer an objective opinion on WoW, having played since it's inception. These people who are in the forefront of the visible WoW community are the ones that should be listened to as they have all sorts of things to say about WoW, good and bad, but don't lose themselves in the forest by staring at a tree. I know I am not the only one that probably thinks this way.

Does WoW have things that need fixing? Yes. Has Blizz fixed everything? No. Have they stopped trying? Absolutely not.

<< LINK REMOVED >> My first MMO was EQ online adventures for the playstation 2 and it still holds a dear place in my heart today even though its been cancelled for years now. Wow is doing just fine for a 10yr old game, actually it is doing quite amazing, as no other industry example can duplicate it. You are also right in that the strength of any mmo is its community and how closely the developers work with them, after all a developer is just a dungeon master who lays down the rules and outline of the adventure, it is the gamer that breathes life into it.

Furthest I ever took the game was WotLK. Here's to days gone by....

But 6.8M is still a commanding lead over MMO #2 through #10 combined.

Blizzard through no coincidence has tens of millions more people who follow their product than say, Zenimax has following their version of TES.

Warcraft as a franchise is as old as any other game out there and has a huge following all its own. Warcraft was so popular back in the pioneering days of the RTS that it became the definitive RTS up until SC took over which guess what is also a Blizzard product.

Quality used to be a big thing at Blizzard entertainment. The talent and direction were so good that the company skyrocketed to fame and fame to this day carries them to these sales figures.

The talent and direction are in freefall though and it is readily seen in their reviews of the last 2 years. D3 was a horrible Diablo iteration and WoW since Wrath has felt lackluster.

Whatever the company once had the magic is now gone. The fame doesn't go away though. At least not until a few bad iterations drop. Maybe 2 years, maybe 5. The writing is on the wall however.

It takes time. That's what people don't seem to understand. We're all individuals. We all find fault with imperfect products in different ways. Like a vehicle manufacturer who makes amazing cars it takes more than one bad iteration to ruin them.

Conversely, a brand new vehicle manufacturer needs but one bad iteration to ruin them. That's the way word of mouth works. It takes time, even generations sometimes to adjust.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I believe the point being that these subs were lost because Blizzard refuses to understand it's issues. Yes it's still successful, but it could be holding a lot more subs. Age is not the issue here, it's the content and design of these patches/expansions driving people away. And yes, these F2P mmos will never hold a candle to WoW, they're nothing but milking machines made to achieve profit through pre order hype.

Whenever I sub the game I am disappointed with myself for doing so. It takes all of a day of being back in the game to realize how bad the game is.

Bad is not old. Just for the crowd that likes to blame age for this game being bad.

If they would only realize the bulk of their player base is 20+ they'd be getting somewhere. Instead they treat us like children in their narrative, their game design and aesthetic.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That and there's nothing to do. You hit the CAP on your character (put in place to keep you in line with the casuals) and then do nothing for the rest of the week. Or go do a raid or dungeons you've already done hundreds of times.

Yea because WoW is just so bad now. It used to be fun during BC/Wrath... the goofy pandas lost me. But it was bad during Cata too. Now they have islands where you just hit 90 and go pick up purples in chests. The pandering (har har) to casuals needs to stop.

Vanilla WOW was the best game that Blizzard ever made, and it only went downhill from there. Cataclysm was barely good enough. I killed Deathwing (something I've wanted to do since I was a little kid playing WC2) and that's where the story ends for me. Everybody lives happily ever after.

There are no pandas in Warcraft. **** off.

StarCraft 2's single-player was a huge disappointment, but the multi-player was very good.

Didn't buy Diablo 3 because by then I had lost all faith in Blizzard.

Oh how far the mighty have fallen. There was once a time when "Blizzard, or Valve?" was a question I could not possibly answer, and now it's easy. Praise GabeN.

@Grim_Jackal Wildstar is tanking, and Carbine already knows this. They direction with the game is nothing but terrible. 800 - 900 hours of playing all the classes made me notice things, and i think they thought about Telegraph combat late in development.

Just make the character models slightly higher poly, that should do it. Oh no wait, you already did that.
