World of Warcraft lost 800,000 subscribers during the April-June quarter, publisher Activision Blizzard announced today as part of its latest earnings report. As of June 30, the game had 6.8 million subscribers, which is down from the 7.6 million subscribers as of March 31.

Activision says the downturn in subscribers came mostly in the East. The company called the decline "seasonal" and pointed out that the dip in subscribers was similar to what we saw in the second quarter of 2012, ahead of the release of World of Warcraft expansion Mists of Pandaria.

The next World of Warcraft expansion is Warlords of Draenor, which launches this fall for PC. The expansion's release date will be announced during a special event next week in Los Angeles. Though the expansion isn't out yet, it has already sold 1.5 million units in pre-purchases, Activision Blizzard said today.

Though World of Warcraft's subscriber count is down, revenue from the game is up, Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime said. He did not provide a specific revenue figure, and Actvision Blizzard does not share this information publicly.

Activision Blizzard also announced today that Diablo III has now sold more than 20 million copies. This figure includes sales of Diablo III itself and the expansion Reaper of Souls, which was the top PC game during the quarter in terms of dollars in both North America and Europe, Activision Blizzard said. Diablo III originally launched as a PC-exclusive, but is now available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will be released this month as the Ultimate Evil Edition.

Overall, Activision Blizzard posted better-than-expected earnings results for the quarter. Revenue was $658 million compared to $608 million this time last year. Net income, on the other hand, stood at $45 million, just half of the $90 million the company posted last year during the same quarter. On the bright side, Activision Blizzard reported that a record 73 percent of the company's total revenue came from digital sales.

"Today, we have more opportunities to create great content using new platforms and business models while also expanding into new geographies, and are embracing all of these growth opportunities with the same commitment to excellence that we have demonstrated over the past 23 years," Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in a statement. "As the world's largest and most profitable independent interactive entertainment company, we remain focused on creating the most compelling, engaging games for our dedicated audiences and providing superior returns for our shareholders."

Activision Blizzard is currently holding an earnings call to discuss these results and answer investor and media questions. Check back later for more.

Wow is lame. PC gaming is lame. Chat amongst yourselves in your guild chat to disagree, I won't listen because I already know I'm right....and clean your room, if you live with your mom when you're 30+ you should at least respect them enough not to play WoW 16 hours a day and nothing else.

End of expansion drop off, they'll be back, they need their fix.

I needed mine sooner, so I signed up again a week or so ago after a hiatus of over a year. The problem that Blizzard has is that they put out the last bit of major content, then the game stays the same for a year or more before they release the next expansion. People get bored.

Supposedly they are going to reduce the time between expansions, hopefully by about 6 months. Gives the raids a fair go, but you avoid the drop off. They could also make the gear scale up as people level, so they don't feel like they've wasted their time. When they hit the new level cap, they already have a set to start advancing in dungeons to prepare for the new raids. Everyone's happy.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Nope. $50 for an expansion is far too much money. People aren't going to pay it when companies like EA and Ubisoft offer the same amount of content for $15. The expansion once again barely adds anything, and before you say upgraded character models, nope, those are 100% free.

So obviously I don't quite know how their revenue stream works...but if every player is paying $13 a month, and they have 6.8 million players... It's works to just over a billion a year in subscription alone.

@Choad-Warrior That's not taking into account their revenue is up despite losing 800k subscriptions. Their total revenue was up an additional $50 million. What are these people paying for?

And I have no idea how GS' censor system works, but I can't for the life of me figure out what the "bad word" in the above sentences is.

This is not news this happens before every major expansion when Blizz just doesn't have any new content for the old expansion, I've done it several times myself, just gets boring with nothing new to do.

"Activision Blizzard reported that a record 73 percent of the company's total revenue came from digital sales" The digital-only (or mostly digital) era has already arrived for Blizzard. 73 % is a lot, but Blizzard has always been focused on the online PC bit and that has really helped increase the digital sales.

WoW will be 10 years this November along with Half-Life 2 and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. I still play the latter and it's one of my favorite games ever. Can't say that about the other two.

It's essentially their money tree right now. Pay your way out of low pop servers/faction imbalance

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> To clarify my last post. You are a little mis-informed. WoW has made it easier than ever to play with friends. They have also combined servers into cross-realm servers. They have essentially combined low-pop servers into a bigger server. If this wasn't enough, they also made it so you can group with anyone on your friends list, as long as they are in the same faction as you, including allowing you to run raids etc. with them.

I ran the simulation in game dev tycoon, the outcome was bleak. The mmo cost to much to maintain, the expansion packs were bandaids at best.

I a lighter note, this is bringing us closer to that new warcraft game!

I quit a few months ago, it seems like the Blizzard devs are so lazy, they can't even put out any new content and they make more money than any other MMORPG in the world yet we don't see any new content for a year or longer but somehow all these F2P/B2P MMOs are able to push out new content monthly, it's ridiculous.

I hope they lose more, maybe a few more million so they'll get their act together, then again it's a 10 year old game, maybe people want something new to play. Maybe a new MMORPG to finally compete with WoW would be nice but I don't see anything on the radar for the new future...star citizen looks promising but it's a different genre.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It took EQ a very long time to get knocked out of #1 and that game is still around. In fact it took a game like WoW to come around. I haven't heard of any new MMO that would come close to even attempting to truly be a WoW killer. A dozen or so tried and failed...
