World of Warcraft: Then and Now

The Azeroth you once knew is gone forever. Take a look at some of the drastic changes made in preparation for the Cataclysm expansion.

World of Warcraft has undergone one of its most dramatic changes with a patch aptly named The Shattering. As a precursor to the release of the game's latest expansion (Cataclysm, which is scheduled for release on December 7), parts of Azeroth have been devastated, displaced, flooded, or outright destroyed due to the conspicuous homecoming of a very large and very angry dragon named Deathwing. Upon leaving his roost of hate and resentment inside Deepholm, Deathwing took to the skies over Azeroth and began his assault on its lands, setting fire to population centers and delivering an assortment of natural disasters to its shores. Since the initial attack, the inhabitants of Azeroth have had time to rebuild and regroup, and the result is reworked areas (some more so than others) that feature new characters and quests. We took a look at a few of these locations to highlight just how much Azeroth has changed.

Stormwind (Map)

The city of Stormwind is no stranger to change; its sizable harbor was added so that Alliance players could catch boats to the Northrend continent introduced in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. That pales in comparison to the face-lift that Stormwind has received for Cataclysm, though. Not only has the dragon Deathwing completely destroyed the park and damaged the towers overlooking the entrance to the city, but the entire city has benefited from a makeover that, presumably, wasn't Deathwing's doing. The streets have been repaved, small alleyways have been carved out to make getting around easier, and Stormwind Keep now has a grand entrance complete with a statue atop a fountain. Behind the city, where there used to be nothing whatsoever, there's now a cemetery and a small rural area that boasts both a pumpkin patch and a fishing lake.

Stormwind Map (Before) Stormwind Map (After)

Stormwind

Despite sustaining some significant damage during Deathwing's flyover, the city of Stormwind has never looked better. Pick a spot anywhere in the city, and you can't fail to notice that practically everything you're looking at has been lovingly redesigned or remodeled. Stand outside the city's stockades, for example, and you can see that streetlights, building exteriors, and even paving stones now look significantly better. In the distance you can see the ruins of what used to be the entrance to Stormwind's park and--even though World of Warcraft's draw distance has been improved--a distinct lack of trees.

Stormwind (Before) Stormwind (After)

Westfall (Elemental Break)

Westfall's Cataclysm transformation isn't as dramatic as that of many other zones, at least where its appearance is concerned. There is, however, a big chasm populated by translucent green oozes just east of the Gold Coast Quarry now, complete with some kind of vortex that's perpetually spinning trees and chunks of ground through the air. Elsewhere in the zone, wind elementals have been replaced with cyclones that will throw any animals or players that get too close into the air. The area around Sentinel Hill has been walled in to form a sizable settlement of sorts and can now change quite dramatically as a result of your questing in the area, courtesy of the same phasing technology that was introduced in Wrath of the Lich King. Several great new quests make Westfall well worth a visit even if you've no business being there at your character level, and two new flight points make moving around the zone much easier if you don't have your mount yet.

Westfall (Before) Westfall (After)

Menethil Harbor/Wetlands

Menethil is approximately half the town it used to be as entire buildings are now underwater on the west side. The inn and many of the town's vendors are still functional, but you have to wade through shallow water to reach them. Elsewhere in the Wetlands zone, night elves have established a small outpost with its own flight point at Green Warden's Grove, and a new dwarf quest hub--also with its own flight point--has appeared next to the large lake that was created when the dam keeping Loch Modan out of the Wetlands was destroyed.

Menethil Harbor (Before) Menethil Harbor (After)

Loch Modan

Stonewrought Dam--which held the pristine waters of Loch Modan--was severely damaged, forcing its contents to the land below. As a result, Loch Modan is completely drained, and the land underneath the dam has become a large wetlands area with various elementals and other creatures patrolling what's left of the once-mighty lake.

Loch Modan (Before) Loch Modan (After)

Gadgetzan/Tanaris

Gadgetzan has grown a little, many of its buildings have been relocated, and the encroaching ocean has made it a coastal town rather than an inland one. Horde and Alliance flight points have been relocated inside the city walls, and outside, a new ship is being built. Survivors from nearby Steamwheedle Port are now gathered on rooftops barely above water level, waiting for rescue balloons sent over by the Gadgetzan goblins. Pirates still occupy much the same area of Tanaris that they always have, but where before they occupied makeshift encampments, they can now cause trouble from the comfort of their ships. Tanaris isn't necessarily a zone that you need to make a point of visiting to see the Cataclysm changes, but there are few better zones in which to appreciate World of Warcraft's new normal-mapped water with procedural ripples and--as determined by your visual settings--varying levels of reflection.

Gadgetzan/Tanaris (Before) Gadgetzan/Tanaris (After)

Thousand Needles

The massive chasm that served as a focal point for Horde quests has been completely flooded following the events of the Shattering. Likewise, the Shimmering Flats--a large salt flat where goblins and gnomes could be found racing each other--has also been filled to the brim, but the two races have built an enormous barge in the flooded area and have sent salvage crews to collect wreckage from the ground below. Taurens still make their home atop the various peaks in Thousand Needles, but they're joined by a new encampment of Twilight cultists that you can see on the right side of the screen. Finally, the Great Lift that once connected the canyon to the Barrens has been completely destroyed by the flood waters.

Thousand Needles (Before) Thousand Needles (After)

Badlands

The Badlands is still just as inhospitable as it was before the Shattering, only now it has a massive swath of torn land and a pair of sheered mountains just about where the Dust Bowl was located. How this formation, which is called Scar of the Worldbreaker, got there remains to be seen, but it's reasonable to infer that Deathwing got a little too close to the flight deck. What's also interesting is that a massive chasm now separates the Badlands from Loch Modan, destroying any direct land route from one area to the other.

Badlands (Before) Badlands (After)

Booty Bay

Despite what's suggested in the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm trailer, which shows a massive tidal wave crashing upon the statue of Baron Revilgaz, the pirate stronghold of Booty Bay didn't drastically change after Deathwing's little tantrum. The statue is still intact, albeit with some damage and a bit of seaweed here and there, and the town's physical characteristics are mostly unchanged. Still, there are some little details to take notice of--new waterfalls cascade down the cliffs near the back of Booty Bay, and a shipwreck, created by the tidal wave, can be found on one of the cliff sides.

Booty Bay (Before) Booty Bay (After)

Darkshore Harbor

If you want a good idea of the kind of destruction Deathwing's arrival has caused in World of Warcraft, venture on down to Darkshore and visit the Night Elf town of Auberdine, or at least, what's left of it. The whole area has been completely obliterated and still suffers from the aftereffects of the Shattering which includes a tornado--called the Eye of the Vortex--that still hovers around the ruins of Auberdine. The rest of Darkshore has been similarly wrecked, with large portions of its coast now submerged underwater, while a new waterway can be found a little further inland.

Darkshore Harbor (Before) Darkshore Harbor (After)

Southshore

One of the more contentious areas in World of Warcraft, the Alliance-controlled Southshore is now under the control of the Horde thanks to the Forsaken forces and the Forsaken Blight (the massive puddles of green fluid) produced by the machine featured in the screenshot below. A number of relatively minor physical changes have also been made to Southshore to reflect its new occupants.

Southshore (Before) Southshore (After)

Orgrimmar

To say that the capital city of the orcs has undergone some changes is an understatement. The entire area has been almost completely redesigned with a menacing theme in mind. Metal plates now reinforce many parts of the city walls and interiors, and seemingly even more large teeth adorn various structures. The Horde war chief, Garrosh, built a new structure in the middle of the Valley of Strength where he resides, waiting to give orders to members of the Horde. Additionally, there's an entirely new area for the goblins, called the Goblin Slums, which signals their post-Shattering alliance with the Horde.

Orgrimmar (Before) Orgrimmar (After)

Kind of makes me sad from a nostalgia point of view TBH. When I found out they were changing everything I went back and leveled some of my lower level characters for one last trip through the Azeroth I had remembered so fondly. After I got my fill, I cancelled my sub. Maybe I'll come back some day, but my friends tell me the community certainly isn't getting any better so who knows... Vanilla will always be the most memorable and special game to me. All MMOs kind of lose their charm when they start piling on expansion packs. If you didn't play in the very beginning, you really missed out. The best time to play an MMORPG is right when it comes out, everything is fresh and exciting. The community is just happy to be playing and it's always a good virtual place to be. Usually it takes the pompous elitist jerks and angry, antisocial people a while to catch on, leaving a window of time for people who just love the game and want to enjoy the experience with others to simply enjoy the game.

@stormchanter i think you're forgetting that all quests between lvls 1-60 have been changed, graphics have increased in resoultion, brand new areas, more accesible interface, time saving features like finishing quests w/o having to back track to turn in, new races, new spells, new talent trees, more conveniently placed NPC's, early rep rewards, cheaper dual spec and mounts, friendlier tutorial for new users, new dungeons, new bosses, new battlegrounds, mats are more common, i can go on but i think i proved my point. and tho you might still think WoW sucks, just know that there are at least 12,000,000 people that disagree with you

wow havent changed at all.. still same game. just new "Carpet in the livingroom". Still same ppl running around screaming noobs at everyone and jacking off to GS stats.. all about the gs... As long as that exist it´s gonna keep on sucking no matter how many make oves they do on it. let´s face it . they haven changed a damn thin in the new exp. just new areas and repainted some stuff...still same game. So if it sucked before , it will prolly suck now. cause the ppl and small minded thinking is still the same.

hmmm the dragon should have destroyed all of wow... but then again the nerd suicide rate would drastically increase and only cool people would be left alive :P anyway the game still looks like cr-p to me... i tested it for 10 days twice (first about 5-6 years ago and second about 2 years ago) and it just wasnt good... even age of conan was better! at least it had blood and tittttties (the salt in the good game recipe ;) or just look at other mmorpgs like lotro, they at least tried to improve the game graphically while wow still looks like a DOS box game (almost) ;) and about the whole COD discussion: mediocre shooter with some fun multiplayer elements... the series stopped being good after mw1... i miss those doom2, quake2, duke3d, hexen, ... days! i want another singleplayer based shooter like they used to make them! high hopes on duke (takes) forever and rage!

For me the most striking change was the devastation to Stonetalon Peak. I loved that area and after working so hard to preserve it I was sad to see the damage that the wretched Venture Co. had caused in pursuit of profit. On the flipside, swimming in Thousand Needles is rather satisfying.

@slayer1090 To each his own i suppose. Unreal was a joke to me, and i don't remember killstreak rewards, at least none like nukes and aircraft. I'll have to revisit the titles i've played to see. Also, a foot shot doesn't kill in CoD....although i do agree there is some problems with certain mechanics in Black Ops specifically, mainly lag focused. Every gamer won't like every game. The argument was not about CoD being game of the year or decade or anything. It all started with someone saying WoW is better than buying "Full priced CoD expansions". i felt CoD offers more entertainment and accomplishments than WoW and blizzards constant nerf and buff schemes. So I think we can end this argument now...and if you never played WoW i don't know why you posted in this thread in the first place, but guess we all have to troll somewhere. Cheers. @02050muh I'll take your clan single handedly =)

I haven't played a whole lot of WoW before Cataclysm (only about 140 hours or so which for WoW isn't very much). So for most of these areas that got changed, I never even noticed it as I had never ventured to those areas before Cataclysm. I have started to play WoW again now though, now that the new expansion has been released. And for some reason I am enjoying it a lot more then I ever had in the past. I can't even really explain why. Maybe everything they changed overall just made the game more enjoyable for me in ways that I don't even really see. Who knows. Either way, the new expansion is great and WoW is still one of the best MMORPG's ever created. Thanks Blizzard for continuing strong support.

I'm still playing FFXI myself... I love all the new updates and level cap increases over the last few months. I played WoW for about 4 or 5 months a year or so ago, so, despite getting my warrior to the then highest level, i'm still a WoW noob. These new updates look cool, though. Nice to see Blizzard give their game a complete overhaul (ballsy move fa sho). FFXI did something similar in it's Wings of the Goddess expansion, but it really only allowed you to travel to the past where monsters were tougher and all the cities are under seige! Now if only FFXI could put something in the damn game that tells you what items and food does without looking it up online, we'd be good!

I never played WoW I used to play ffxi, and one of my bigger arguements was the graphics, well in my opinion ffxi is 9yrs old and still looks better, but this is probably one of the most impressive re-designs I have ever seen. Good job blizzard.

My friends just got me into WoW and I think its a fun ass game it's not the first mmo I've played but anywho about call of duty. Call of Duty is in fact an over rated game but seriously that's no reason why you shouldn't play it and I love battlefield. it too is an awesome game but battlefield bad company did have a crappy campaign. Also i'd like to know why are they saying they are realistic thats just retarded unless you've actually been in war you won't know what a realistic shooter is like

Oh my god, people, you're supposed to talk about WoW Cataclysm not Call of Duty... And how can you compare a shooter with and MMORPG !? What the heck ? It's all a matter of taste, I play both genres, and I agree, I love killing undead monsters, demons, adn other fantasy stuff just as much as I like to shoot a guy right between the eyes from the other side of the map, or run towards him and cut his throat with a knife...It's all a matter of mood and taste. Back on topic : The two new races introduced in Catalcysm are absolutely awesome, but flooding Tanaris !? And Thousand Needles !? I don't really like that, because the best part of WoW was, in my opinion, the leveling, I grew my characters in those zones, and seeing them changed so drastically makes me feel weird. I mean, come on, they looked waaaay better when they weren't flooded. And the new graphic engine is kind of weird too, I mean, I loved the way WoW used too look, the textures created a perfect and quiet world, that made want to explore it, just to see the nature and the epicness unleashed... Now this looks like one of those Japanese Free 2 Plays... I'm sceptical about Cataclysm.

@Se7enS1nz I've never played WoW to begin with. Unreal Tournament had kill streaks far before COD did. COD may not be that broken, but it's not new either. COD doesn't require skill or precision when a foot shot kills. Beating Braid is a bigger accomplishment than anything COD has to offer. I rest my case.

@StingrayX5 Meh, never said CoD was about team work so dunno why you decided to argue that point =) I know that CoD is all about having the best guy on your team, not having the best team. Unless you invite all of your friends into one party and have mics. But CoD is a game that requires you to have skill, be it individual or teamwork. It requires precision. It doesn't rely on Blizzard OP Toons was my point. Treyarch isn't going to get on tomorrow and nerf my classes, because i make my own classes as good as they are with MY own skill and MY preferred weapons. i wasn't even discussing the strategy of CoD at all =) simply stating i would rather play games where I have control on how well I can do, not blizzard and them deciding to make one class OP and nerf other classes to trick other people into making new toons to play longer. Also, to me, BF was a huge let down, not as much as MoH though. I would still pick CoD over either of them any day.

@Se7enS1nz Sorry dude...but Call Of Duty is done...it is and always will be a shoot em up game...no team strategy whats-o-ever, your out for yourself in the call of duty games...play a REAL and more REALISTIC game like battlefield, then you'll change your mind about CRAP of Duty ;)

@slayer1090 really? Low standards of accomplishment. Well, sorry killing the same monsters/beasts/demons/undead that have only been rendered different colors and names just doesn't get me off. I'd rather spend time playing a game that requires SKILL and Precision. And doesn't souly rely on Blizzards "OP Toon of the Patch". In addition...CoD hasn't offered anything in terms of innovation? Have you heard of the phrase "if it isn't broken...don't fix it"? Making changes that would "innovate" CoD would be a possible hit or miss, and could potentially hinder one of the biggest FPS franchises. Also, contribute nothing new? Wager matches arn't something new? They are to my arsenal of FPS's.....Killstreaks? I haven't played many...if any....FPS's before CoD that had Killstreak rewards like a Nuke (referring to game titles like RB6). Why don't you quit judging other players....figure out your own problems of low standards of entertainment as well as accomplishment if you think WoW is STILL fun after years of the same grinding, dungeon set ups, and toon nerfs.....

People who feel accomplished after playing any CoD game must have low standards of accomplishment, seeing as CoD is a simple shooter that offers nothing in terms of innovation, and contributing nothing new to the FPS genre as a whole.

really, i made it to 85... I was away almost 2 years away. I gave it a shot again ( 3 quits already , playing since Beta Europe). Game is as good as ever. The addition of small cutscenes in every different story/region like a huge fight with Deathwing VS Alexstrasa while you flying around them killing other flying dragons.. I wont spoil it anymore. But , me , a veteran and many times "hater" of the game because of its slow progression etc etc... Im amazed... Dunno how much ill keep playing but was nice till now.

This game has long since abandoned it's integrity for the almighty $. This was a phenomenal game in both gameplay and scale... in 2004. I never played cause I didn't have money to waste on a monthly subscription. The leveling and questing is all part of a model that keeps players paying that monthly subscription, and expansions are only developed when subscription rates drop. They're beating the same idea over and over and over, and i'm sure it's fun, but some of us require something new experiences, some of us like paying for a game and getting unfettered access to the game that is by all definition our property... just sayin, the day you all stop pouring money into this dead horse is the day you get something new, maybe you'll have to pay per month for that as well but Blizzard would try to get your subscriptions back, to do so they would have to make something better

Well blood wind I may be a moron for buying newer full length titles that are actually diffrent but am in no way dumb enough to waste my life playing a game like WOW. have fun clicking your mouse and hitting the same keyboard keys over and over and over so you can enjoy your digital gear.LMFO. Props for you guys that are figuring out that blizzard is just there to suck money out of your pocket..WOW= biggest time sink in the universe. Oh and by the way I will have fun playing a fps online for mabey 1 hour have 10 matches and go do somthing else while you spend your whole day gaining a level or getting a piece of gear.

@Kosake. Guild Wars isn't your traditional MMO so you can't really compare it with WoW. The things you point out as bad are things I like about the game: don't need months grinding to get into high end stuff. And you say the gameplay is easy.... well try competing in a top GvG match if you want some hard gameplay. The gameplay itself is really smooth and simple, you can easily join in and if there are some good people to help you out, you can do harder stuff in a few weeks already nowadays. There is no gold spam either, there was in the beginning ofcourse, but that's a problem with pretty much any MMO. WoW has easy gameplay as well, it's just an overload of different skills and equipment you need that make it hard to actually get into that gameplay, and that is where it is fundamentally wrong in my opinion, and it isn't worth the monthly money at all.

@ mwimmer: It's been pointed out many times that a new or updating MMO is going to be the "WoW Killer"; This was said about Crysis, Guild Wars, Final Fantasy (XI & XIV) and Aion. All of which did no such thing, and in most cases flopped. Why did they flop? Because they were all compared to WoW, and deemed to be weak in comparison. Sadly, no matter how pretty a game looks (Aion), without proper game play and an enjoyable world in which to wander, it just won't make the cut amongst gamers. The only way I predict that Guild Wars 2 will last on the market is if the game fixes it's core problems. The ease of game play, the constant in-game currency for cash spam, and the fact that the few levels in the game are easily obtainable in only a few days of play. On note of blizzard coming out with a SC or Diablo MMO, they have been in production of Diablo 3 for quite some time, which will be Free to Play, and already has the attention of the public far more then Guild Wars.

@BloodMist CoD is hugely popular for the exact same reason as WoW is. They are both put together with great care and attention with the end result being something special. Since WoW came out it has lost its shine over the years. No one can deny that. Whereas CoD has been reinvented a few times where wow has simply raised the lvl cap and added a race, class or area to the game.. but the game is still the same. It still looks the same as it did when it first came out and it plays the same. It hasn't evolved at all but instead milked a massive fan base in clever ways. The latest clever thing is the update to the environment, which is basically not creating anything new but instead editing what they already have on their hard drives. This is a money making scheme they can use to great effectiveness. And yes, as someone stated above, you ARE paying Blizzard for all this each and every month as well as expansion packs, as well as perhaps a fancy mount, a pet, a character name change or transfer. (Can you see where im going with this?) A map pack (although I dont agree with charging for them) is the same price as one months fee for WoW without all the extra costs. Again making maps in this way gets them more money, which is ultimately the same as what Blizzard do with WoW only on a minor scale in comparison. Add to this the sometimes abysmal server performance and downtime and it really paints a bleak picture.

I played the beta of this and its just the same old thing over again. I thought this expansion would have been much better. So I have decided not to reactivate my account. I will miss all the good people on Bloodhoof eu but I wont miss the game any more. Kinda the end of an era for me :( Good luck to those who will keep playing :)

Although, many will hate me for this, but you know what, this game is given way to much attention. In my opinion it is a waste of time and money.

I am so tired of Blizzard "nerfing" skills and the changes in this expansion are so severe is a completely different game. So I decided to quit WoW and play better games from now on

Aside from the graphics they changed all the character stats that make it harder to do solo quest. Before I could do 25 daily quest solo on any of my toons very quickly. Now I can only do 10 in the same amount of time. Blizzard just made the game take LONGER to accomplish anything which means more money for them. I quit over the frustration. There are better uses of my time.

Not a bad upgrade to the game. The "Blizzard of Oz" addressed a lot pesky issues such as flying mounts everywhere but I noticed a lot of people first night of Cataclysm seemed to be 'stuck' in Gilneas. LOL Worgen FAIL ()xxxx[]::::::::::::::::::> *

Questing in the remade areas is so much more fun. It also goes along with the story that the Lich King is dead and you are takeing back and healing the areas where the scurge once ruled. It is alot more fun when you are makeing progress taking a city from the scurge and seeing a place that was once dead and gray green and full of life because of what u did to help.
