WoW: Dragonflight Pre-Patch Will Come In Two Phases Starting Oct. 25

Players will have to wait until November 15 to create the game's new playable race, the Dracthyr.

The pre-patch for World of Warcraft's new Dragonflight expansion is right around the corner, but players won't be able to play as the game's newest race or class right off the bat.

Dragonflight's pre-patch will come in two phases. Phase one arrives October 25 and will first and foremost add new class talent trees for each class. It will also bring major changes to the MMO's user interface and heads-up display, with both being far more customizable than before without the need for player-made mods. Additionally, the first phase of the pre-patch will bring new accessibility features, new race and class combos for players to choose from, and a rated version of the game's Solo Shuffle PvP mode as well.

The real meat of the pre-patch will come three weeks later, on November 15. That is when players will be able to play as the game's newest playable race, the Dracthyr, which at the same time is a new class, the Evoker. Players will be able to play through the Dracthyr starting zone of the Forbidden Reach so that they are ready for Dragonflight's launch on November 28.

A new (old) dungeon, Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr, will also be added in mid-November, as will the game's Primal Storms pre-patch event, which will introduce new quests and world events in the lead up to the expansion's launch. Primal Storms will see players ward off attacks from one of Dragonflight's new enemy factions, the Primalists.

Once Dragonflight launches, players will have a little over two weeks to prepare for the expansion's first season, which will introduce a new raid, Vault of the Incarnates, and mark the start of new Mythic+ and PvP seasons. A 50% XP boost is currently live and will last until the arrival of the pre-patch, giving players an opportunity to level up their characters ahead of the expansion's launch.

For more on Dragonflight, including its new talent system, dragonriding mechanics, and the Dracthyr Evoker, be sure to read our hands-on impressions after spending an afternoon playing the Dragonflight alpha.

Super excited about the talent overhaul.

The game isn't bad, it's just been so boiled down that it gets boring quickly.

Phase one: jack up expansion price to exorbitant new highs in order to milk your last few remaining customers and ensure that none of the good will lost over Shadowlands is recovered.

Phase two: profit?

@faithxvoid: Prices on video games have been stagnant for decades, we're a lucky group of people in that regard.

Also, the company is out to make record profits, news at 11?

@blankfaced: What can I say? You're absolutely right! $105 is totally the sweet spot for entry into an 18 year old game.

I'm sure it's going to sell gangbusters...

@faithxvoid: That's with a whole lot of extras. They're literally paying for 1 level boost, 1 month subscription, and a bunch of cosmetics for that price. They used to not have editions for expansions and you just got the expansion when you bought them so they literally are extras. Maybe I'm remembering wrong but they might've given you 1 month subscription for free when you bought the older expansions? I'm not sure. The base cost of the expansion did go up by $10... but so did everything else this generation.

Also... I could've sworn I paid for Dragonflight with in-game gold. I dunno, it's been a while, but you can buy WoW Tokens with in-game gold and then cash in WoW Tokens for Blizzard Balance, which I then used to buy Dragonflight so I essentially paid nothing for it (on top of not having paid for a subscription fee since the WoW Token was introduced in 2015). I want to say I'm remembering correctly because I have a very odd number in my balance which I never use for anything, so it should be the balance left over from paying for Dragonflight that way.

@jinzo9988: no.

Subscription to get from 1-50 $15

Shadowlands $40

Dragon flight $50

All base set items $105 to start playing Warcraft.

Can’t believe you typed all that to be wrong

@faithxvoid: You initially spoke about the expansion price. I assumed you were still on that train with whatever the most expensive edition of it is for whatever they sell it for. If you're starting today, I have no idea why you would buy Shadowlands for the month and change it has left of being relevant. If they're not even selling the base game anymore then I'd be interested to see what the pricing is once Dragonflight is out. Do they still make you buy Shadowlands first or do they start charging for a base game again?

@jinzo9988: They have made no indications that they are merging Shadowlands into the base pack. Considering they already backed off the old expansion level squish in favor of going from 1-50 base, 50-60 shadowlands and 60-70 Dragonflight, as well as the fact that Shadowlands is still on sale stand alone and in bundle, AND that BFA was made base set over a month before Shadowlands launch, it stands to reason that the old leftover-squad running the show is going to continue milking the thousands of people still kicking around the den of despair that is WoW today.
