X-men: Dark Phoenix Flops With Lowest Box Office Results In Series

X-Mess.

The latest X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix, hit theaters this weekend and scored the lowest opening for a movie in the entire mutant superhero series. The film opened at No.2 and made an estimated $33 million in its first three days on release. This is well below the last X-Men movie, 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, which debuted with $65.7 million, which was itself considered a disappointment at the time. Dark Phoenix did better overseas and opened with $45.6 million in China, to bring the worldwide total to $107 million. Nevertheless, considering the negative reviews and the fact that the X-Men series is eventually expected to be rolled into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is almost certainly the last movie featuring the current cast.

The animated The Secret Life of Pets 2 claimed the No.1 slot this weekend, with an estimated $47.1 million. Although the film did top the chart, this was also an underwhelming result compared to the impressive $104.3 million that the first film took in 2016, which remains a record opening for an original animated film in the US. However, it is worth bearing in mind that the reported production budget of Pets 2 was less than half of that of Dark Phoenix ($80 million compared to $200 million).

Now Playing: Dark Phoenix - Official Final Trailer

There were no other new entries in the Top 10 this weekend. Last week's No.1, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, dropped into fourth place. Its domestic gross now stands at $78.5 million, and as Box Office Mojo notes, the film may have trouble breaking the $100 million barrier in the US. Its predecessor, 2014's Godzilla, made $136 million in the US.

Elsewhere, Disney's live-action remake of Aladdin moved down one place to No.3, while the musical Elton John biopic Rocketman fell to No.5. In the lower half of the chart, the Blumhouse-produced horror Ma and action sequel John Wick: Chapter 3--Parabellum, are at No.6 and No.7 respectively, while Marvel's hugely successful Avengers: Endgame is at No.8. The movie has now taken $824.3 million in the US and $1.90 billion worldwide.

You can see the full Top 10 list for the June 7-9 US box office below, as compiled by Box Office Mojo.

I can't speak for everyone else, but every time I see Sophie Turner, I see Sansa (a character I hate) instead of the character she plays.

This is the first X-men film I've decided to skip. I've seen everything else.

Of course it flopped, they literally did Dark Phoenix as the 3rd X-men movie years ago. And I thought all the movies took place in the same universe at least as far as Days of Future's Past was concerned, so the whole idea of this movie existing seemed stupid to me. Plus, I hate GOT and that girl anyway.

The MCU needs to just absorb the X-Men already so we can get some good movies.

@aross2004: There's too many characters. The X-men could form an avengers team on their own. You're going to have hundreds of avengers taking on one bad guy.

@aross2004: Because of plot armor and the fact that good guys must beat bad guys in the end no matter what, even if avengers were a team of only 2 or 4, they would still win no matter how powerful the villain is.

Most of the people who died in Infinity War were conveniently brought back to life. Did you really expect any less?

Didn't this story arc take years in the comic book? They tried to put it in two hours?
In all honesty I'd have been fine with the series ending on such a positive note with Days of Future Past.

X-Men was such a huge brand and these movies have just squandered it.

I'm not sure why 2 movies about Phoenix were made over the course of its run. X-Men has so many huge story arcs, they could've done so much more than phone it in like this.

In some places you have commas and others you have periods in your chart there Mr. Gamespot editor.

Also, I'm surprised Dark Phoenix was still #2, despite how reviews were tanking.

It’s not surprising... the X-men movies have failed miserably for some time. For which I will never spend another dime on watching those movies and clearly a good majority think the same with those appalling numbers.
