What we heard: Last week, ye olde rumor mill churned out a report that Sony would reveal the motion-sensing controller that it patented last year at next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Now, it's Microsoft's turn.

The speculation stems back to February, when reports out of Israel and Silicon Valley indicated that the software giant had purchased the startup 3DV Systems to acquire its Z-Cam motion-sensing technology.

The Web site for 3DV describes its technology thusly: "For the first time ever, you can use your body freely to control games, no wearables required, no limitations attached. Move your hand, leg, head, or finger in any direction and setting, moving quickly or making fine, minor movement--all these gestures are easily detected and understood by the system, creating a unique, personalized, and immersive gaming experience. This experience is complemented by the ability to combine your own 3D image inside the game scene, in real time."

No Caption Provided

The Microsoft motion-sensing front remained largely quiet until last Friday, when popular tech blog Engadget posted a photo of a motion-sensing camera peripheral hooked up to an Xbox 360. The controller's capabilities sounded virtually identical to that of the Z-Cam, with "full body and hand gesture control of games [and] characters" including the ability to "kick, punch, duck, dive, [and] jump." The add-on will also apparently recognize "hand gestures like pinching, grabbing, and scrolling" and will also feature live video conferencing, among other features.

Then, amid the Cinco de Mayo revels on Tuesday, top-tier tech site Ars Technica and the British newspaper The Guardian both posted articles saying that they had already demoed the 3DV Z-Cam--at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show more than one year ago. The latter even has video of it in action (at time count 1:17), which indeed shows Minority Report-like functionality, with correspondent Bobbie Johnson navigating a series of menus with a few hand motions.

No Caption Provided

The CEO of 3DV Systems, Zvi Klier, explained to the Guardian that "while a regular camera sees color per pixel, this [Z-Cam] camera sees distance per pixel, and because we see exactly what's happening in front of the camera, we can understand human gestures very easily."

Both the Guardian and Ars Technica go on to describe the Z-Cam's features as being exactly the same of those outlined by Engadget. And with the technology so far advanced, both postulate that the enhanced 360 add-on might be the centerpiece of Microsoft's E3 press conference on the morning of Monday, June 1.

The official story: "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation."--Microsoft spokesperson.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that Microsoft is working hard to catch up in the motion-sensing control race. But will the 360 add-on be ready by E3? It certainly looks close...

this is bogus...wats with all the motion sensing crap?? i wanna be able to sit on my bum with a NORMAL controller and play final fantasy XIII. Given the poor performance of the last remnant on 360 (choppy animations, poor framerate, just plain laggy gameplay) i cant imagine FFXIII even being able to run on 360. I doubt it can handle the awesomeness that is Final Fantasy

CWSoccer07 i never said anyone is copying. I was just saying its ironic how people bash sony then when ms is doing the same thing they some how some way find it different. Anyways like i said in the previous sony article. No one is going to let nintendo corner the market. What I think is either sony or ms should come out with a motion sensing cheap system like the wii if they want to get some of that market share. Kinda like sony has a psp and nintendo has a ds. To me these motion sensing systems is a different market. I put it this way consoles, motion sensing, and handhelds

ImYour13thStep, this is different than PS3 or WII. Yes generally they are the same thing, motion-sensing. Sony is trying to improve the WII functionality using LEDs and a camera to pickup the controllers movement. The MS is trying to only pick up a person's movements, regardless of a controller. Either way, these are only being created by MS and Sony to compete with the niche WII has created for family and party entertainment. Neither is exactly copying from another.

JCDenton, I agree with your sentiments. But I'm a software developer myself, and just because something seems unlikely, doesn't mean it can't be coded for. But I agree, it's hard to see how they could make it work without some complicated logic. For most games, you'd have to have something other than just the motion capturing to control certain actions (change weapons, etc). Not to mention how much programming would have to be done by the game developers to recognize certain actions, and interpret those as actions to the game. If you think $60 was too much for Call of Duty, to have that game with motion capturing, it would likely be $100 game. It's a lot of programming. I just don't see this being used in mainstream gaming for the 360. Sure they can create bowling games or 1 player tennis games, much like the WII. But I won't rule this out in the future, because I honestly think controller-less gaming is where games will eventually go. Controllers button layouts only limit the number of actions that can be done, and for complex games (sports games) the actions are complexly laid out with combinations of button presses and joystick use.

This could definitely have some nice benefits. This may not bode well with all the hardcore gamers out there, but I think this could definitely open up new types of games for the 360 for others out there. I look forward to seeing some different types of interfaces for the 360. It makes the machine that much more versatile.

I'm on the fence with this one. I don't think it will make an impact on anything other than gimmicky games, and never really be used for mainstream gaming on the 360. But I am optimistic in the direction this could take games. There are obvious hindrances that this poses: 1. How do you move in games that require unilateral movement (sports games, sandbox games, FSP and third person shooters)? 2. How do you play couch coop games? 3. Do you really expect people to play in a room that has no movement other than the person playing (ie, dogs in the room, other family members or friends making random movements). If they manage to address those issues (as well as others), the limitations would be based on user creativity and developer coded restrictions (can't climb this item, invisible walls, ceilings, etc). There are a lot of doors this would open, but some or many of them wouldn't be doors you'd want to open.

AngelCage-2: i believe you might be right about the functionality of the camera, i think it scans a image, irregardless of the reality of it, and identify distances on foreground object from that image, then compare it with cached results from the previous frames extrapolating any movement from the difference in the distances. This brought to mind issues with the Achievement infrastructure of the console and File sharing websites like youtube. You could theoretically, hold the camera up to a youtube video of someone playing and have their performance be mostly replicated exactly on your screen. Next generation of Walkthroughs ? Need a hard achievement ? Ill play the game for you. Just hold the camera next to your computer, framing it just so.

I'm sorry, but I can't see this being good for core gamers. This has way less functionality than the Wiimote + nunchuk. How would you move, jump, then shoot in an UT or Quake-like game? Can you imagine running in place, jumping, aiming your finger to the side of the screen (to aim ala Metroid 3)? Try aiming properly while jumping...it can't work. I think they can make simpler versions of current games, but I'll be in the store to buy myself a Motion +.

What is wrong with you people? Chill a little and give Microsoft a break. Personally I hate the wii's motion sensing partially because it doesn't work that well for advanced movements and because to many games use it as a gimmick. But if this technology works as hyped, they really could do some very cool things with it. Just wait and see before you bash.

distance to pixel? is that possible with only (flat) image scanning pixel per pixel? (wow, welcome to the lag) To me, to kanow digitally a distance from one point to another you need some kind of infrasound, or another wave to measure distance... scanning a single fram taking from a camera is like scanning a photo... just pixeles... there are any (evident) way to measure any distance. what about if you put a picture of yourself in front of the camera lens? will it be scan it like a plain plane, or will it interpret any relative distance in the photo pixels? cause to me scanning a image taken by the lens is the same thing... thins thing is very interesting. Anyway, after all that babling, i are completly sold with MS and Sony if they deliver some kind of REAL motion sensing control to 360 and ps3. Why not?

As many have stated, gamers who play 360 play because the game play/graphics...this motion sensor feature is for the Wii and I enjoy playing the Wii for that reason...so if Microsoft releases it, I don't care, I won't buy it.

I hate movement controls, just keep using the 360 controller. These things are gimmiky to me, and thats why I hate the wii. I wish the wii had 360/PS3 graphics, and a regular controller. Just imagine Mario or Zelda.

Meh. If this is thing real (I doubt it), it will be used on a bunch of stupid casual games and nothing else. You won't be doing Hadoukens and Tatsumaki-Senpukiakus in your room for example. So, who cares, as long as they use this **** only on casual games, and don't force this in normal games.

This is a turn off for me, movement sensing technology puts me off games. The Wii is good for nights in with mates and the 6-axis is gimmicky at best. I like the traditional style of controller where I can lie back on my couch to play games, relax and chill. I don't want to be moving round all over the place. That's why I don't touch the Wii for the most part. Still it's great news for those that wanted somethign like this.

If this comes out, this will most certainly revolutionize gaming technology, like instead pressing B to block in RPG games or attack, just simply do the movements! Or RTS gaming where you have an overview board and just simply tab on the unit to control it! The possibilities are endless!!! :D

Nobody's gonna buy this garbage. Get a Wii if you want to wave your arms around like an idiot. This is just a prime example of large corporations throwing their money around with little care as to what it goes towards. Why waste time making good games when they can make some gimmicky peripheral that will be used for a couple dozen shovelware sports titles for little girls and will then die out within six months? The Wii has nothing to worry about. Hardcore gamers will not even touch this thing.

what is more to the WII?, the only thing that WII has is the montion sensor, it only has like 5 to 8 games worth playing, imaging a wii60 how it will be, with the 360 graphs and nintendos controllers, a total blast. And true the PS3 montion sensor Sucks, but he WII controllers is really, really fun, and if the manage to do something like it, again bring it on, still, this montion sensor feature is an option, so is up to you to use or not, is not going to damage your 360 regular playabilitiy

Motion sensing is a waste of time, on the PS3, i hate it. On the Wii, I see it as a gimmick. Don't stick it on the Xbox, I like my Xbox. The only game to do it well was Medal of Honor Airborne. Otherwise, get out of it!

LOL - so basically an upgrade of the Eyetoy? It doesn't sound like the kind of technology to get excited about, but I may be wrong. In terms of whose technology will be the best (out of the two rumoured) it sounds like Sony's will be a little more revolutionary, although clearly, this is only my opinion...
