Xbox 720 launching in November at $500 - Report

Windows blogger Paul Thurrott claims Microsoft's next-gen platform will launch during same window as PlayStation 4; subsidized model available for $300.

Noted Windows blogger Paul Thurrott has details on Microsoft's recently confirmed next-generation Xbox. In an update to his website today, Thurrott claimed the platform will launch in November at $500.

No Caption Provided

This release window would put the Xbox 720 up against the PlayStation 4, also believed to release during November.

A $300 Xbox 720 will also be available, Thurrott said, though this model will require consumers commit to two years of Xbox Live gold at an expected price of $10 month. If this pricing is accurate, gamers would end up spending $540 overall.

Thurrott said Microsoft's May 21 Xbox 720 reveal event will be the first of multiple announcements for the platform. A second event will follow ahead of the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, where the platform's full launch lineup will be revealed, he said.

Crytek's Kinect game Ryse and a new Forza title, among others, are reportedly part of the Xbox 720's launch lineup.

A third, developer-centric event will take place during the Build conference in San Francisco in late June, Thurrott said.

Concerning the Xbox 720's architecture and specifications, Thurrott understands that the platform is based on the core version of Windows 8. "This suggests a common apps platform or at least one that is similar to that used by Windows 8," he said.

Thurrott also said the Xbox 720 will contain a Blu-ray optical drive and reiterated that the system will require an Internet connection to function. This feature "isn't as Draconian as many seem to believe," he said.

Lastly, the blogger again mentioned that Microsoft will release a third generation Xbox 360 console in 2013 that will be "significantly less expensive" than current models. This console is codenamed Stingray, he said.

Currently, the Xbox 360 starts at $200 for a 4GB unit and scales to $300 for a 250GB bundle.

Thurrott is a noted Microsoft insider and runs Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows.

A Microsoft spokesperson told GameSpot, "We're excited to share more about the new generation of games, TV, and entertainment on May 21, but have nothing further to share at this time."

Always online = Draconian. There are no shades of gray here.

@Ixidor56 @TheCyborgNinja I consider it Draconian, but it's not an always-online service. Steam is definitely Draconian, you do not own any of your Steam games and nor do any Steam subscribers. DRM, dude. Steam made DRM the standard across the entire PC sector of the industry. Steam is despicable, and yet Valve's good PR team has so many gamers fooled into thinking they're not evil it's unreal.

@Total_mischief Steam is far from awesome. I lost my 268-game account when a large group of people decided to harass me and then spam Steam Support reports against me for saying "screw off" one time, after normally ignoring them. They said much worse, and yet I was the only one punished in the entire scenario.

I'm done with PC gaming. I'll play more GoG in the future when I sell my rig and build an HTPC to replace it, but I'm just done with PC gaming. Steam has ruined PC gaming for me, I can't ever forgive them for that. Hell, when I asked them, politely, if they'd reconsider my Steam ban (for saying "screw off" to people who were unforgivably awful to me, remember) they threatened to close my support account as well. Just to be clear, I was polite, I wasn't annoying, the only thing I did wrong was that I was the target of harassment.

I'd rather Origin than Steam at this point, but I quit PC gaming. No more of that nonsense for me.

@Facelord @Ixidor56 @TheCyborgNinja Nobody's fooled. You buy a license for your game, we know that, we agreed to that. It's DRM, but it's not intrusive DRM, it's not all in your shit trying to make it a pain in the ass for you to access your games. Plus you get AAA titles for half-price on holidays. Most importantly, you can play those games when not connected to the internet. It's also a very nice way for indie devs to get out there. Otherwise, there's GoG, which is even more awesome than Steam.

@Ixidor56 @TheCyborgNinja Steam doesn't require you to be *always* online to play a game. How many times will we need to say it here for God's sake? /facepalm

Does this possibly mean that Halo may come back to PC or will MS still be dicks about it and refuse to make another one for the PC?

For those that want the $300 version they will have to commit to Live Gold for 2 years at $10 a month?

Wow, way to milk consumers.

@nousername66 This is why I quit Xbox gaming. Thought I'd get a 360 at the start of this gen, here we are eight years later and I still don't have one.

I've never actually used Windows 8 but I've yet to hear anything good about it.

@Heshertonfist It's faster than windows 7, but its shitty interface is all over your face. If you have a touch screen and that's all you ever do with your computer, that's nice. If you have a PC for another reason than looking at shiny colors, it's not so nice.

Windows 8 = a faster Windows 7 with an optional METRO feature that you don't even have to use.

@Heshertonfist It is basically the same as windows 7, but faster, you only have to ignore the tablet stuff.

Ah? So, how is Windows 8 a bad experience? Too lazy to make it boot on the desktop?

Not really buying into these rumors at all, I'll wait for Microsoft to give the details, no use in listening to rumors now that Microsoft has a date set for a reveal.

I doubt this. $400 will be it's top price. There is no way $300 would be a subsidized price. $100 or $200 tops if they were to go that route. In this economy gamers are not that stupid. Better luck next time blogger.

@Queefing_Return If it were any other person, I'd treat it as skepticism. However, Eddie is the most unbiased, factual writer on the Gamespot staff. That and $300 is the sweet spot for a console manufacturer to target. It locks you in to commit to Xbox Live because you are using it for two years, which means you wil buy more online games on a Microsoft platform instead of a Sony platform. You will WANT to use that $10 a month. In the long run, it guarantees a higher amount of software purchases on a Microsoft platform over a Sony platform, which is where console designers need to profit to cover for the loss suffered on each console sold.
