Xbox At E3 2020: Phil Spencer Provides Update On Partial Show Plans

E3 approaches.

While Sony is bowing out of E3 2020, Microsoft will be at the show to reveal more of Halo Infinite and share more of its plans in the lead-up to the Xbox Series X launch later in the year. [Update: The ESA has canceled E3 2020 due to coronavirus concerns.]

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has now provided an update on how Microsoft's E3 2020 planning is shaping up. He said on Twitter that Microsoft held the latest planning meeting on February 15, during which he and his team discussed some of the titles it might show off or announce during the company's briefing. He teased there will be a "deep portfolio" of Xbox Game Studios titles scheduled to appear at E3, though he did not name any outright.

Spencer also mentioned how "console launch years are just special," referring to the launch of the Xbox Series X later this year.

No Caption Provided

Spencer also mentioned that veteran Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg is leading the E3 planning team. Greenberg hasn't shared any specific insight into the Xbox E3 2020 plan, but he did tease in his own tweet that Xbox may be partnering with Taco Bell for something. Microsoft partnered with Taco Bell before for a unique promotion involving tacos and Xbox consoles.

E3 2020 takes place in June. If history is any indication, Microsoft's E3 2020 briefing should take place on the evening of Sunday, June 7. The company had a very strong E3 2019 briefing that was highlighted by a viral moment with Keanu Reeves and Cyberpunk 2077.

One game that is confirmed for Microsoft's E3 2020 briefing is Halo Infinite, which is a launch title for Xbox Series X. At E3 2019, Halo Infinite boss Chris Lee said E3 2020 will be a "big moment" for Halo Infinite, and that developer 343 Industries would stay quiet until then.

Microsoft is also likely to discuss the Xbox Series X--and the other next-gen consoles it might be working on--during E3 2020. Many facets of the Xbox Series X remain a mystery, including its price and release date, as well as its launch lineup.

I know people are huge fans of Halo, Gears and Forza but showing them at events like this just gives fodder for the haters. 150 Mario games is perfectly fine but 5 or 6 Halo or Gears games is too much apparently. Its going to take a while for their new studios to start producing stuff so people need to relax. They'll get there. At least they're showing up.

I appreciate the article, but saying Phil has games to show at E3 isn’t really news. I mean, MS always has had a deep portfolio of games to show. Had he said a deep portfolio of 1st party titles I would have been excited 😬

@consolehaven: Microsoft revealed 14 first party titles at E3 2019, 4 at XO19 and 1 at the Games Awards Show more than any other publisher during this time period. I am sure we will get a lot more at E3 2020.

@5tu88sy: Maybe and maybe not as we will see in time. I may just bow out on both PS 5 and the new Xbox and let my son enjoy it as one does tire of the race for dominance and I have so many games in my collections for all platforms that I may not live to play them all and neither will my son. :)

We must be living in two different realities, Microsoft's E3 last year was outright terrible and the majority would agree. In fact, every E3 since 2013 has been terrible for them. Each one pushing more towards 3rd party territory, further confirmed by Phil's push on the anti-consumer service Gamepass and changing the competition by admitting they simply can't compete with actual game makers and now are focusing on two different entities entirely. How anyone can view Xbox in a favorable or positive light is beyond me, as many are far too smart to fall for the bullshit Phil's been peddling these last few years. Continue being an Xbox fan, you're bringing down a hobby you claim to love though.

@reznik00: What are you talking about? Microsoft had 14 first party releases on E3 2019 and had the most spectacular third party release among all the publishers as well with Keanu Reeves announcing Cyberpunk 2077.

As for E3 2018, they were rated as having the best presentation at that conference by most critics upstaging Sony. Maybe that is why Sony has boycotted E3 2019 and now E3 2020 for fear of being upstaged again.

@reznik00: Everyone has an opinion. At least they showed up last year and will do so again this year. Besides, the last time Sony did show up for an E3 it was, by far, one of the worst and most bizarre E3 shows of all time. Even Sony admits it was a disaster. I'll never forget the men with funny hats and weird instruments and watching thousands of people have to get up to change venues half way through. I find it pretty funny you bash Microsoft's E3's without mentioning one of the worst E3 events ever brought to you by Sony. "The anti-consumer gamepass". That has to be the funniest thing I've ever heard. Getting to play hundreds of games for the cost of 2 games a year is anti-consumer. LOL.

Ah the gaming markets changing fast, and it's becoming stealthy.

I wonder if gamestop or Sony can cannibalise the series X as it's turning out to be the true 2013 event that failed to live up to expectations as always online.

Imagine if xbox one vanilla offered gamepass back in 2013 rather always online. It really would have sparked imagination for Microsoft version of Netflix.

I don't know if Sony can compete with Xbox as it's now entering towards its own category.

It's nice Sony and Microsoft are partnering up in cloud.

@Crazy_sahara: Gamepass is anti-consumer, everyone who uses it should be ashamed of themselves, and MS simply cannot compete with Sony or Nintendo, at least not in the gaming world.

@reznik00: It's very hard to say, most games like final fantasy 15 are not selling well, or are receiving exposure like this use too, GTA 5 is almost 8 years old (so it makes sense to launch it now on gamepass and with Microsoft generous offer) even with the ultimate edition, or most games, and indi developers have to kick start their games, but with Xbox I'd, Microsoft will agree to buy a portion of their games, but they cannot lease it on the apple play store, why who knows any other platforms sure.

Gamepass has its place and purpose, but dam does it eliminate piracy, and yes gamepass isn't perfect but (just like facial recognition) it's going in the right direction.

On a personal level I cannot afford $100 for a game, and with returns internationally a store can not honour your refund, and can get messy especially the time and fuel it takes to swap the game.

Steam has been doing it for years anti consumer non refunds, most of their games end up on piracy sites(I'm not defending Microsoft) it's just when was the last time you spotted a pirated copy of PS4 or Xbox.

And yes Microsoft pays you to play, you earn money to play games when the hell was that ever offered never. So 30.000 points is 3 months of ultimate gamepass. Like I said it's not for everyone but it's there, even browsing on browser edge bing earns you points.

@Crazy_sahara: the problem I have with game pass is so far Microsoft’s 1st party releases on their have been lacklustre at best and just like every other dev is shoving micro transactions into their games and game pass gives them an excuse to be lazy as hell while shoving as many micro transactions in as possible

@uchihasilver: I agree some of the 1st party games was not all that great but where it shines when it goes beyond the 1st party games and I get to play other game outside of the 1st party pickings. I rather test drive an game whether it is 1st or 3rd party so I can see if I want the game instead of buying it outright and then finding it hard to get an refund. Game Pass has many faucets and I like that and also all said is nothing more than speculative. I only use Game Pass as far as console and not the PC as I feel it is more beneficial to me than on the PC platform as that is an separate subscription and I try to keep them down to an manageable state. MS Imho appears not to be in it to win it as it may feel they not need to as the Xbox line is not the bottom line of their business and speaking the truth for Sony it may be.

@vice86: Welcome to technology. People pay $500 for a GPU and it's outdated in a few months if you want to stay on the cutting edge of tech. You think Sony is waiting until a week before the PS5 goes on sale to start designing and producing it?

@vice86: When do you think the console is manufactured? They have to have a final product built and ready for production well before launch. That's true for any console.
