Xbox Backwards Compatibility Adds 70+ More Games Today As Microsoft Ends The Program

Microsoft adds a whopping 70+ titles to the backwards compatibility program in its final update.

As part of Microsoft's 20th anniversary of Xbox broadcast, the company announced that 70+ additional original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles have been added to the backwards compatibility library in what looks to be the single biggest day for new additions in the history of the program. It's also the last batch of new additions, as Microsoft will no longer add more games to the program as it focuses its efforts elsewhere going ahead.

The games are available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and all of them support Auto HDR, while many get a resolution enhancement boost. Additionally, FPS Boost has been added for 11 of the titles added today and 26 from the existing library. The third big piece of news was that FPS Boost is launching now on Xbox Cloud Gaming for 33 titles, including Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, among others.

It's a big day for backwards compatibility
It's a big day for backwards compatibility

"At Xbox, we believe in celebrating gaming and preserving its legacy. No other art form offers the opportunity to be immersed in expansive universes through the combination of stunning visuals, evocative music, emotion-driven storytelling and interactive, living worlds. Since 2015, the backward compatibility program for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S has made it possible for gamers around the globe to discover and replay thousands of games spanning our 20-year history," Microsoft said.

The entire Max Payne and FEAR franchises are now available through backwards compatibility, while the much-loved Skate 2 has been added as well. More than 20 OG Xbox games join the backwards compatibility catalog today as well, including Dead or Alive Ultimate, Star Wars: Jedi Knight II, Star Wars: Starfighter, and multiple Otogi games.

All of these games are playable on a disc (if you still have it) or digitally. The "vast majority" of them can be purchased anew through the Microsoft Store beginning today.

As for the enhancements, Microsoft said every game added today features Auto HDR (for supported displays), and fans can look forward to 4x resolution increase on Xbox Series X and Xbox One X; 3x resolution increase on Series S; and 2x resolution increase on Xbox One S and Xbox One.

For the FPS Boost updates, players can expect up to double the original frame rate for games like Binary Domain, Nier, FEAR, Fallout: New Vegas, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Dragon Age: Origins, Alan Wake, and Dead Space 3, among others.

This will be the final addition to the backwards compatibility catalog, Microsoft said.

"This latest and final addition of 70+ titles to the backwards compatibility program was only possible through the passion and feedback from the community," Microsoft said. "Your constant requests for specific titles and enhancements encouraged the Backwards Compatibility team to partner with the original creators to preserve thousands of games from over four generations of Xbox. While we continue to stay focused on preserving and enhancing the art form of games, we have reached the limit of our ability to bring new games to the catalog from the past due to licensing, legal and technical constraints. Thank you for being part of this journey with us."

While this run of backwards compatibility releases is coming to an end, Microsoft teased that backwards compatibility and game preservation are "core to the DNA of Team Xbox," and as such, the company is looking at other ways to keep it alive through Xbox Cloud Gaming and "future platforms."

"Together, we've celebrated our passion for incredible games and proven the importance of preserving our legacy for future generations of gamers. By empowering players to play the games they want, with the people they want, on the devices they want regardless of where they were originally created, we continue to enable new generations of gamers to experience great games and franchises from the past," Microsoft added. "Compatibility and game preservation are core to the DNA of Team Xbox and our community, and we are excited to explore new ways to preserve our history and bring the catalog of the thousands of titles available in the Xbox ecosystem to more players via new innovations such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and future platforms."

Some of the games in this list are not even purchasable. Just take a look at the first game: 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. You can't even buy it on Xbox One! All it says is: "View Game".

I doubt this is the LAST backwards compatibility update. It might be the last for original Xbox games but this generation hasn't really started yet due to the insane shortages.

Microsoft could make every game backwards compatible but they need permission from publisher's to do it.

I'll just end this post with the fact that MS has said it's the last BC update before. So... Expect more eventually.

Time splitters 2 & 3!!!!! Woooo

I tried my Japanese copy of DoA Ultimate on my Australian Series X, fully expecting the games not to work, but they worked fine. Or rather, I expect they will after the 5+Gb download for each.

Next I just tried my physical copies of TimeSplitters 2 and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. Neither of those worked! I just got the usual "not compatible with this device"-type error. Did MS not add support for Australian copies of these games? Or are they still rolling these updates out?

@boltronics: Xbox has been region free forever. Well some games aren't because Microsoft left it in the hands of the publisher but the vast majority aren't region locked

@teamparadox2k: Hmm... maybe I've just been unlucky? I've got a few hundred physical games here for various Xbox consoles, but I'm sure there's a few I imported that don't work on original hardware but runs fine in BC mode on One X and Series X. I think the BC got rid of all the region restrictions AFAICT.

When it came to the PS3/360 era, I mostly purchased games at the time on the PS3 just because of the region issues. I can play imports from Japan, and never had an issue. Never trusted my 360 to be able to do the same. It's interesting to know it's only some games that are region locked - although still more than the PS3 which had no region locking at all AFAIK (except for movies).

As for TimeSplitters 2 and Max Payne 2, I think Australia will have different region-specific disc codes, and maybe Microsoft hasn't added them to their lists so they can be detected correctly? If they're still not working in the coming days, I'll open a support ticket (although based on past experiences dealing with MS, I won't hold my breath on a resolution).

So ONE MAJOR QUESTION - Why isn't NFL 2K5 and NFL 2K8 EVER on this backwards compatibility list? I think EVERYONE who LOVES these two games knows why - can we say "SHAME ON YOU" Microsoft OR will there be an HONEST answer from Microsoft? It is good I am not a GAMBLING person because I would not like my odds in getting that HONEST answer 🤣🤣

@lvflyer: Honestly, I think it has more to do with 2k than MS. 2k holds the rights to the series, and can veto their library going on anything. There's also the factor that EA holds the exclusive license to the NFL (unfortunately), so there' a lot of legal hazards getting either one of those titles on there.

Backwards compatibility is why I switched to the X..........BOX! I am supper ecstatic about this drop & I cannot believe I now have: Binary Domain, FEAR series, Ridge Racer 6, Gunvalkyrie, & TimeSplitters 2.

Thank you XB & devs!!!!!! THANK YOU devs for all your hard work on some of these masterpieces of digital art & fun!!!!!!

The BC program kept me glued to the digital stores checking each week, which meant free advertisement for them & I am disheartened that it is ending now though.

Games I would still love to see:

007 series

Terminator Salvation

Alien Colonial Marines (fix)

Air Combat 6

Hawx 2

Top Gun: Hard Lock

Thunder Wolves

Fireburst

Jurassic the Hunted

Apache Air Assault

BackBreaker

Blacksite area 51

Blur

Dreamcast collection

Heavy Fire: Shattered Spear

Legend of Spyro

Lollipop Chainsaw

Painkiller Hell & Damnation

Sega Rally Online

Outrun 2

SPLATTERHOUSE

The Incredible Hulk

TMNT series

Deathsmiles series

Otomedius Excellent

DaDonpachi series

Armored Core series

Front mission evolved

Chromehounds

XBOG: MechAssault 1-2 & Hulk.

Would also love to see EDF 4.1, 5 & 6 come to XB.....please XB help the devs port it over, not fair that PS4 & PC have it & we don't!!!!

So glad to see the Max Payne trilogy finally become available. Surprised to see 50 Cent Blood on the Sand too. That's a very fun co-op shooter definitely worth playing at least once. Wish Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks had made the cut. God that game was so much fun.

I have a lot of Xbox 360 games that would not work on Xbox one or Series X. A few that come to mind are Lollipop Chainsaw, Splatterhouse, Wheelman, Wolfenstein, Singularity, The Chronicles of Riddick, all the James Bond games. I'm sure there are tons if I looked into it. I hope my Xbox 360 never breaks down lol. It does turn itself off sometimes. I have the original Xbox version of Halo so if I bought an Xbox one I would have to buy the Master Chief Collection which seems ridiculous because there wouldn't be licensing issues there it's just a greed thing. For someone like me who buys a lot of games it's really a case of me needing to hang onto my older hardware (and hope it doesn't screw up) which I tend to do anyway. I suppose at least they're not as bad as Sony who dropped all support for anything older than PS4. As far as Sony goes with backwards compatibility they are useless. The only reason they supported PS4 on PS5 was because if they didn't nobody would buy it. So yes as I said better off hanging on to your older consoles unfortunately because backwards compatibility on any of the consoles is either non existent or not good enough.

First of all, this is an amazing drop. Dayum.
2nd of all I want to cry that they ended this program without the single most important XBOX game...

Jet Set Radio Future.
Hopefully that's purely because Sega got their head out of their ass and are doing an HD remaster.
Hopefully... vainfully full of hope.

I have mixed feelings about this. I'm glad they added a bunch of games, many of which I have in my collection, but there are so many gems that missed out and am sad they won't add any more.

Especially original Xbox games, where only around 50 titles are supported (out of a total of about 1000 games). We're only talking 5% of games. What about the original XIII? Cold Fear? The Thing? The Serious Sam classics? Need For Speed Underground? Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay? MechAssault? Enter the Matrix?

I'm glad they finally added the old Dead or Alive and TimeSplitters games, but the focus throughout this whole endeavor for Microsoft has clearly been on the Xbox 360, no doubt since people are more likely to be repurchasing games from that era. It's a bit of a shame - but this is why I continue to leave my original Xbox and Xbox 360 connected to my TV to this day, right next to my Series X.

@boltronics: Xemu beat them to it.

They (MS) can do it but the reward is not worth it. Even if they do it and those game are added to game pass the % of folks actually playing them makes the task unrewarding.

@s1taz4a3l: I agree. The % of games made to be backwards compatible is too slim for me to truly believe MS when they say it's all they can do "due to licensing, legal and technical constraints". MS earned a lot of goodwill from the gaming community for their efforts bringing old games to modern hardware (which presumably also translates into console sales and brand loyalty), and I would have thought that would have been enough to justify keeping the work going.

I am pleased by most pf this list.

Pissed that they are ending it. Are they mad?!?!

This is a major pro Xbox feature for myself & many.

BC was why i went XboxSX before PS5..

**Sacred 2 is such an awesome game..Nothing like Sacred3 at all.

~StarWars StarFighter & Jedi Starfighter are both alot of fun.

~Binary Domain,,

If you like Crimson Skies you will like Starfighter. i did.

****Skate 2 * Skate 1~ i never played either(but own both)

A huge issue i have with Skate3 is when you roll backwards you revert to SWITCH instead of going backwards.

Tricks from backwards/Fakie are alot of fun. like fakie nose grinds

and everything HalfCab.. I never understood why 'switch' is even a thing.

it shouldn't matter what stance someone uses.. If you can do both like Jerry Hsu,P-rod or Koston then do whichever but it doesn't/shouldn't carry more weight if you do a front blunt switch.. These skaters should use their 'switch' skills to just do fakie tricks all the better then most.. Im showing my stcu in the 90's again.whatevs.

I still can't even ollie onto a curn switch(never could). most i could do is stuff like tail slides as im using my fakie skills to cheat it ;D

@twztid13: Dude, Why didn't you just closet your 360 like i did?

tomato tomatoe.. I see Xbox 360's at Goodwill ALL THE TIME for $15.

They even had a bundle with a bunch of controllers and couple games for $25... But i feel ya that it's annoying...

*I will say this though~ My brother pointed out/proved to me how alot of games play better on the 360 the via BC.. Wolverine Origins was one and i forget the others we tested...

**For me~ it's become a side hobby to go to Retro Gaming store and get the buy 2 get 1 free or buy 3 get 2 free.. The games are usually between $3 ~to~ $10 bucks.. But iat this point i enjoy having em on the shelf as it for sure helps me decide what backlog title to play...

Lollipop CHainsaw is a ytitle that for sure is oworth justifying it imo..

For me Sacred-2 woulda been "that game" Even though i still have my 360

i don't keep it or PS3 installed cause of the clutter, esp w/ wires..

I am surprised LC wasn't on that list but Walrords or Thrillville was.

I know u dont wanna hear it since ur at the bustop in yesterdays clothes ;D

(Yeah i saw em twice!) but getting the 360/ps3 is worth it for the backlog of games ya missed out on.. ESP when it's 10X more likely that todays AAA games are gonna be crap or ruined w/ greed or whatevs...

PM me if ya care.

Fantastic - F.E.A.R. disc inserted and downloading as I type, with added FPS boost and Auto HDR. Looks like I'll finish that sucker after all.

Great to see the Max Payne series, Ridge Racer, Nier, Oddworld and others brought into the BC programme too - my backlog just got even longer....

Maybe here and there the licening issue could be solved and few games could be bc along the way.

Most Nintendo systems, both console and handheld have been backwards compatible for the one before it: Gameboy Advanced played on the first two DS systems, DS played on the 3DS, Game Cube played on the Wii, Wii played on the Wii U.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that the only time outside of the SNES that they didn't have backwards compatible systems was when they changed over to disks (N64 to Game Cube) and then again when they changed to flash memory (Wii U to Switch). Which, to be fair: it's a little hard to shove a cartridge into a disk drive and a disk into a cartridge slot.

Now. If you want to bring up the fact that you can't play all NES and SNES games on the current system, that I'll agree with but, as the article and many comments have already pointed out: even Microsoft haven't and now, officially won't pulled that off to 100% completion either.

I will also concede the point that only one console generation back seems a little short sighted nowadays since retro gaming has taken off in such a big way but, let's be real: I don't think any of them thought that anyone would ever want to play a 20 year old game when they were all starting off so, I'm not sure just how fair it is to to hold that against any them.

That being said, yes, what Microsoft has been doing for the backwards compatibility is commendable and yes, I think that Nintendo should step up a little more to catch up, while Sony-- well, Sony really needs to just get on the bus.
