Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Responds To PS5 Rumors For Starfield, Gears Of War

The Xbox head says there will be a business update on the team's "vision" next week.

Microsoft might be dramatically altering its Xbox console exclusivity strategy in the near future. To address new reports, Xbox head Phil Spencer has confirmed a "business update event" for next week. It comes after we've heard Microsoft may be considering bringing games like Gears of War, Starfield, and the upcoming Indiana Jones to PlayStation. [Update: The Xbox business update is coming on February 15 in the form of a podcast.]

On X (formerly known as Twitter), Spencer announced his plans and acknowledged he's heard the discourse about these reports. "We're listening and we hear you," he said. "We've been planning a business update event for next week, where we look forward to sharing more details with you about our vision for the future of Xbox. Stay tuned."

Earlier today, Jeff Grubb of GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb mentioned that Microsoft was reportedly planning to reveal its new game-release strategy at the end of February, though it could be moved up. That apparently looks like that's the case.

In January, there were separate rumblings about Sea of Thieves launching on Playstation as well as Hi-Fi Rush heading to PS5 and Nintendo Switch. A recent leak also adds fuel to Hi-Fi Rush going multiplatform in the future.

Last year, Spencer talked about exclusives on a "case-by-case basis" before Microsoft officially acquired Activision Blizzard. Keep in mind that the reports haven't mentioned other big-name exclusives from Xbox yet, like Halo Infinite or the upcoming Avowed.

Not sure what to think of it!
In short term,it could bring alot of money but in long term Xbox loses its "identity".
Lets sit and wait for the next weeks update.

@sladakrobot: the identity hasn't been the console for like 3-4 years now, minimum.

If games aren't exclusive anymore, might as well just make one console to play them all.

@hmoobpaladin: That's what Gamepass is to MS. They want that to be their thing and you can play it on whatever you have. That's why they were so invested in the cloud, because that lets's them do that even on devices that aren't up to the job.

I'm wondering if the world against anti-Starfield rhetoric will slow down. I've suspected that mostly PS zealots are behind it.

@mattwoahyeah: Doubt it. Just because it arrives on other platforms isn't going to stop a portion of the playerbase being disappointed there either.

Yeah, everyone on Steam is a PS zealot. Makes sense.

@mattwoahyeah: You think it’s mostly just PlayStation fans? What’s the “mostly negative” Steam score about then? How about all the Xbox owners who’ve said they lost interest in it after 20-30 hours?

I borrowed a friend’s Series X to try it, because I felt that I should give it a fair shot. I hated it. I found it extremely boring and thought the amount of load screens was ridiculous. I get that that’s a common Bethesda thing, but there shouldn’t be nearly that many load screens at this point. Not to mention so much of the game felt empty, and the combat was bland. It’s just not a good game. If it comes to PlayStation, I still won’t be buying it. There are too many actual good games to waste anymore time on that one.

@mattwoahyeah: Maybe.

I've played the game though and love Bethesda stuff usually.

Wasn't a fan. It definitely earned its 6-7/10 it got from a lot of reviews. It's like a space sim without the sim. An RPG without the RPG. And an FPS without the FPS. Like it didn't really pull off any of those.

Space-wise it's like being in a bunch of segregated rooms in space. There's no real connectivity between them because there's a loading screen every time you do anything - with no effort to mask it for immersion.

RPG-wise it's got a somewhat interesting setting with somewhat interesting factions... but does next to **** all with them. Its New Game+ thing is pretty cool, but the prospect of having to beat the game to experience it is moot when the game is too dull to get through.

FPS-wise, it's too easy.

It's definitely one of the weakest Bethesda games.

Xbox is not going to betray their fans for multiple reason. The biggest reason is with Microsoft, because they are own record saying certain things will lead to a massive class action Lawsuit for defrauding their customers and trust me that is a court battle, they will lose, and it will hundreds of billions they will have to payout. So this right here is a non-starter issue at hand.

@mogan:

Phil spencer and the CEO of Microsoft have said multiple times that to the consumer and their player base that " No Xbox Studio's Exclusive Game will ever come to the PS5 or Nintendo Console" That right there is enough to make a class action lawsuit on behalf of the gamers that play on XBOX. Because that was not a regular statement it was a promise from the company to the players that brought into the XBOX brand.

@ceelogreen94: Interestingly, the first Google result for, 'Satya Nadella no Xbox games on PlayStation' is an article from last July where he said, if it were up to him, he'd get rid of console exclusives altogether, but said that's mostly up to Sony as the dominate player in the console market.

I don't actually see anything where he's said, "No Xbox Studio Exclusive game will ever come to the PS5 or Nintendo console."

@stickemup: I can tell you are to dumb to understand how that works. Also youtube is free go look it up. If this was just a regular statement to the consumer, he would be ok. However, when you make a promise to your buyers and the consumer that changes things. What he did when he made that statement was make a promise to the people that brought into the XBOX brand and the courts will hold them to it, if they break that trust.

@ceelogreen94: Xbox is a part of Microsoft, which is a tech company. I don't see how that quote is real seeing as Ori is already on Switch, Minecraft is on everything, and we already know that CoD will remain multiplat. Phil said after the Bethesda acquisition that it was their intention to ship Bethesda games on platforms where game pass exists. The thing is that is doesn't matter that much what Phil's intentions are. What matters is what Nadella and the shareholders want to do. What it seems they want to do is get the largest immediate return on investment. We'll see for sure on Wednesday.

If you want to make a distinction without a difference to imagine a world where the end consumer can sue a trillion dollar company into not publishing their IP on other consoles then have at it.

They have been saying various different and vague things for a long time, at least it seems that way to me. I hope they are clear and specific and committed.

I thought that they would have come up with their vision during their creative process with the console and launched with that intent. Maybe they did and they didn't message it very well at launch? Why would they tell people 3 years in? Or maybe the higher up corporates have wanted to change the direction?

Microsoft has been listening more to its user base, even to the point of reversing unwelcome policies after public outcry. Question is, how far will that listening go and how much are they willing to bend to it? Seems there are two vocal camps, one that disagrees with recent moves and rumors and one that's all for it. Will be interesting to see where Microsoft lands and if they'll reverse course again if where they land causes an uproar. I think we're moving to a time where almost all exclusives will be basically timed and end up on all platforms at some point, except one or two major console branded franchises like Halo for Xbox and God of War for PlayStation. But they'll still come to PC. Well, except for Nintendo. Getting them to release a game on anything not made by them might cause the planet to stop turning.

@bdrtfm: I kind of wonder if even timed exclusives matter to Microsoft in a world where they have Game Pass. I could see them releasing games on launch day on PS5 and the saying you could also just play this on Game Pass on an Xbox or PC.

I love how people simply cannot be pleased no matter what Microsoft does. If it buys Activision, it's a disaster because now Call of Duty will be made exclusive to Xbox, and in the future Microsoft will discontinue single sales and force everyone to sign up for Game Pass and it's a nightmare in the making. Then Microsoft is like "well maybe we will sell some games in PS5" and it's a disaster because now they killed Xbox and ruined their customers' lives and it's such a betrayal and now Microsoft will go bankrupt.

@MigGui: I venture to say people saying those things were different and separate. 😉

I was on the camp of complaining for the acquisition, and I’d also be happy if this happens for real. Which I doubt.

Provided they don’t kill XBOX hardware altogether, that’d be sad and not good for the industry. IMO.

Cheers.

They need their competition to survive because they've been in the red since the Xbone came out. If this was during the 360 days, this so called business update would be destroying its competition, not beging for Sony and Nintendo to sell their games😆Wtf happened to this company lmao.

What difference does it make? Nobody is talking about their AI division, this is about their gaming division (obviously), and its been a mess for the longest of time. At first, the Xbone X was supposed revive the brand with all the "best lineup in xbox history" bullshit we've heard from Phil. Nothing happened. Then it was supposed to be the next generation, and looking at their massive failures such as Infinite, Starfield, Redfall and Forza, lets just say that they're currently doing poorer than they were with the original Xbone.

@rolento25: They literally canceled the PS5 version because they thought Starfield was going to be the next big thing for Xbox, and after 15+ years of development, it didn’t even get a nomination at The Game Awards and became a meme for how incompetent Bethesda is. One of the worst games of 2023 up there with Redfall, which surprise surprise, is another Bethesda game.

I’ve always said that after Sony let The Show go multiplatform, that in the future, money will get in the way of exclusivity for some games. I don’t think Halo, and probably Elder Scrolls will be exclusive but everything else is fair game. So Sony would then let Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, and probably Ghost of Tsushima will be multiplatform. Also if I’m Sony and I want to really make a dollar, release Bloodborne remake multiplatform.

@Viper13579: The Show going multiplatform was more about the MLB than Sony. It wasn't about Sony wanting to share, it was the MLB not wanting to gate their flagship title to one platform.

We still haven't seen any indication from Sony that they have an interest in releasing other exclusives to different platforms, outside of PC. With Xbox, the writing has been on the wall that they're trying to expand beyond the Xbox platform. They've basically said that their goal is to have Game Pass available on as many platforms as possible, and this would be another step in that direction.

I honestly do not get the outrage, but then, I never go to system wars.

I mean, OK, I can understand people saying "Why did I buy the XBox?" That said, if you CARE enough about your XBox that you're having a meltdown over it, then you probably, you know, LIKE your XBox. If you like your XBox, KEEP your XBox, keep playing games on your XBox, enjoy your XBox. It's not like MS said "Oh, by the way, we're taking all the games you like off the XBox and it's now just for Hulu, have a blessed day."

This really changes nothing if you like your XBox. It's the same XBox it was yesterday, and will be tomorrow. Keep enjoying it, and game on.

@olddadgamer: Agreed. I scratch my head when I see or hear the vitriol that sounds the arguments. I don't even know why there would be an argument.

If you want to debate the subtle differences the consoles have from hardware, distribution, cost, menu, games etc.- awesome! Comparing the 2 systems is a form of judgement. Which means it's your opinion. Despite how people are using the word now- subjective is your opinion. Everyone gets to have one. No one's opinion matters more than another(especially in the comments section at GS)

When people start acting like sports fans, getting bristly, acting out, I don't want to even be around it. These companies don't know you and they certainly don't care about you. They want your money. Why would you get emotional, protecting a group that wants you for your money? This will be the same group that won't provide you with assistance or even take notice unless you give them money.

People should save their emotions for the things that matter. Time, connection and fulfillment. The rest of it is inconsequential entertainment... enjoyable, but still inconsequential.

... but hey, that's just my opinion
