Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Responds To PS5 Rumors For Starfield, Gears Of War

The Xbox head says there will be a business update on the team's "vision" next week.

Microsoft might be dramatically altering its Xbox console exclusivity strategy in the near future. To address new reports, Xbox head Phil Spencer has confirmed a "business update event" for next week. It comes after we've heard Microsoft may be considering bringing games like Gears of War, Starfield, and the upcoming Indiana Jones to PlayStation. [Update: The Xbox business update is coming on February 15 in the form of a podcast.]

On X (formerly known as Twitter), Spencer announced his plans and acknowledged he's heard the discourse about these reports. "We're listening and we hear you," he said. "We've been planning a business update event for next week, where we look forward to sharing more details with you about our vision for the future of Xbox. Stay tuned."

Earlier today, Jeff Grubb of GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb mentioned that Microsoft was reportedly planning to reveal its new game-release strategy at the end of February, though it could be moved up. That apparently looks like that's the case.

In January, there were separate rumblings about Sea of Thieves launching on Playstation as well as Hi-Fi Rush heading to PS5 and Nintendo Switch. A recent leak also adds fuel to Hi-Fi Rush going multiplatform in the future.

Last year, Spencer talked about exclusives on a "case-by-case basis" before Microsoft officially acquired Activision Blizzard. Keep in mind that the reports haven't mentioned other big-name exclusives from Xbox yet, like Halo Infinite or the upcoming Avowed.

Well I mean, I guess this will boost my series x from an unused paperweight in my office to an obscure collectible curiosity in ten years like my Dreamcast.

That’s said, MS is gonna have to release a 10/10 game to get me to give them another cent of my gaming money

In order to do that Sony would have to give in and offer crossplay.

As long as they keep saying no to crossplay, all MS has to do is wait them out till they bleed, The big studio purchases only started, Sony have some exclusive games under the hood since they had to show their hand during the lawsuit, so they will only feel the sting by 2025 when MS has all big releases under their belt. And as we all know all Sony big releases are making their way to PC.

Good business sense to release old IPs such as Gears of War on PS5. Starfield perhaps down the track when it runs out of steam.

If these rumors are true GameStop will cease buying back Xboxes from all the angry fans.

It may be a good $$ plan for MS, but it will kill Xbox.

Even if they announce that they are staying exclusive, this was still so much fun. I'd still like Hellblade 2 though 😌

2 things:

1. Sony wouldn't do this. And we all know because ps4 vs Xbox one. How many of the many ps4 exclusives came to xbox one?

2. Could this actually be the end of xbox? Will xbox actually stop selling systems like sega did? Because apparently the system is causing Microsoft to lose money but the game developing companies they own will still sell many copies for Playstation and pc.

@probable: Agree on the last part, however MS can afford to lose money on the hardware. MS sees more money on the software of the house. I stopped playing on my PS5 and Xbox as it is not viable for now and just game on PCs, and I am not too excited about exclusives these days. MS it appears to me is not really competing with Sony as they changed their focus and with all those purchases, they made they are making some moves as I believe software outlives consoles and MS would love to have Sony as a customer.

@probable: MS is making money hand over fist. The subscription model may have doubled their revenue. If you follow the stock market you'll see growth. In the tech sector, a lot of investors put it right after Apple.

I think MS recognizes that there are so many devices and delivery systems that it may be more economical to focus on software rather than hardware. This not the 'end' of MS. This may be the pivot MS needed to stay on top. The xbox sector made more money than the rest of MSs investments. They are becoming a videogame company.

@gatsbythepig: Well, I wouldn't go THAT far. MS has never been a video game company. They've been a big company that does a lot of things, one of which is games. Really, for the last ten years, Nadella hasn't been all that gung ho about games, certainly not as much as Steve Ballmer was back in the day.

MS does love its cloud tech, though, and Gamepass seems to be the game...thing...that ties into something Nadella and the rest of the non game parts of MS really care about. This pivot might be the thing that makes MS's leadership (almost) as gung ho about games as Ballmer was, but MS will never be entertainment first and foremost.

Yeah, it seems like Xbox was always fighting to become a product at MS. They weren't convinced from the beginning, and Xbox had to prove itself from within the company the entire time.

It seems like now, the corporate execs at MS have given enough freedom for Xbox to prove itself, but over the past 10 years... it is what it is.

Xbox is just a division within MS, and the overall company's goals are what will drive the divisions. If Xbox couldn't prove itself, then someone from above is going to step in.

This is probably what investors are looking at too. They have the data on how games that have launched on Xbox, launched on Game Pass, and launched on PS and Switch and PC have done. Games like Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft Legends, and Psychonauts 2. They have the data on Xbox sales in all territories, and while it may be popular here in the US, Microsoft is a global company that wants to reach a global audience. (Though MS has been very slow at launching and localizing many products in other territories, and this will still have to happen).

@girlusocrazy: There's also the fact that MS, with the exception of XBox has never been a gizmo company. They don't make phones, TVs, consumer electronics, etc. They had a tablet once, right? That went nowhere.

Sony, on the other hand, has been selling gizmos since forever. The house the Walkman built. Nintendo has been selling consoles and handhelds since forever.

XBox has always been an oddity: a successful gizmo made by a software company. As MS is, and always has been, a software company, maybe the migration of MS gaming to the cloud and gamepass and whatnot was inevitable at the start.

I mean, hell, wasn't there some rumor that, what, six, seven years ago MS was going to spin off Xbox entirely? People speculating what would be a good fit, and Samsung, a gizmo company, kept coming up.

The house that Walkman built- it's such a good story. I like the phrasing. I agree with MS not typically being a gizmo company and I remember back when the xbox was launched. It held almost no appeal for me at first.

Remember the Xune.. or was it Zune? Either way, I agree, they are not a gizmo company.

@olddadgamer: They had Zune and WebTV before. Don't they have Surface now? I get what you mean though.

They're mostly a third party company making software for hardware that other people make (PC OEMs). Their roots are in third party software. They made Basic and OSes for other hardware, and multiple platforms. The MSX, the PC Compatible, TI-99/4A, Apple computers. They also had Windows for the DEC Alpha.

It seems like the Xbox division is the oddity and while they had their attempt, the MS company as a whole may have a different vision than they do.

It's important to have a consumer facing product however and not to see MS as just another content company but a strong brand that stands on its own. PCs are mostly just for the office in the view of the general population, and the primary consumer facing product they use in the home from MS is the Xbox.

But they could still stand out as a content company and maybe become a strong brand that way with some quality games.

@olddadgamer: I would've agreed with you right up until last year. I could be wrong, but it really looks like a fundamental shift is beginning to occur. I don't think they'll only be handling video games and entertainment. Bill Gates sued way too many people for the company to give up on all the products they've (ahem)created... and like you said, boy do they love their cloud. My understanding is that the company made more money in the gaming division than any other.

Let's watch and see over the next few years... it would certainly be weird, but not impossible.

No way. Microsoft’s largest product based revenue streams are Office products and services, Azure Cloud Services, Windows, and Server Products.

@gatsbythepig: Thanks for that link, but it states "Office and cloud revenue still reign supreme, contributing nearly 60 percent of Microsoft’s overall revenue." Gaming is their 3rd largest segment now, (which I actually didn't realize).

Glad the name gives you a laugh, it's all about the accent. 😄

@itsnota2mer: It did say that, but it was also indicating that it surpassed Windows. I guess I was wrong about the lions share of money- I swear I just read it, but maybe I misread or misunderstood.

However, I don't think it's that crazy of a thought. The trend is moving in that direction quickly. Anyway, thanks for pointing that out.

I don't like being wrong, but I dislike disseminating incorrect information even more.

I'm sure they wont do it and if they do, maybe it's one of those that they will release on the PS years later. It be pretty daft if they put them all on the PS a year later or on release date. They need something on XB otherwise no one will want to buy it. XB in my honest opinion has too few to no games that's worth buying it and becomes much more so of a no go if they but major triple A games on all platforms on release day.

It's probably minor in the grand scheme of things but I was hopeful that CoD would be withheld from PlayStation in the future, because it could pressure Sony into filling the void by reviving their own shooter franchises like Killzone and Resistance and SOCOM.

That's highly unlikely now

Uh, it's rumour for every gd thing in their catalogue going multiplatform, these days.

Should've written this everywhere I read it, but the idea - and the initial fuckin leak - was to have ONE to test the waters with.

And Xbox users should get something in exchange from competing platforms for the "magnanimity" of Microsoft. (No point releasing a prime exclusive into the wild if you don't get one back from*them.* Even profit wouldn't cover how much power you'd lose).

Lastly, they spent $69 billion USD on ABK. What, did everyone think they'd try and make that back, long-haul, by playing it safe?

How would Xbox lose money selling one of their first party games on PlayStation as well?

@mogan: i said POWER, not money. Earnings doesn't buy standing in the community or bargaining chips at the negotiating table. A quid pro quo would benefit (and piss off) the fans of both camps, resulting in balance; a unilateral shift doesn't do anything but bring revenue for MS.

It would also be nice to play those games with an increased framerate.

As a Xbox only gamer, I fear the death of the console. What would compele anyone for buying the next console? Unless the next console is literally a game pass machine. Sales of the console will diminish and there won't be a demand for it.

Honestly, Microsoft is probably going to develop a budget friendly gaming PC and market that as the answer for those who don't want to spend thousands on a gaming PC.

@gunsblazing777: xbox isn't going anywhere lol

How many "exclusives" does the Steam Deck have? What about the sales, last I head they're like at maybe 4 to 5 mil. Faaaaaar cry from the Switch's second year (20 - 50 mil)

People need to stop thinking of this as a race, and more of a business. Microsoft never needed to catch up to Sony to turn a profit, not then and not now. They continue to make a profit on their systems and they'll continue to sell.... in NA at least.

The stupid console exclusive stuff is going away and we will finally have every game everywhere

I've been dreaming of a future for gaming where you just buy a box and play every game on it and it's almost here

Come on Nintendo stop with the underpowered hardware and start releasing on PC and everywhere else!

@dragonsama: Can you imagine how much money Nintendo would make if they released all their classic games on PC, XBOX and the Playstation consoles?

I can see why they wouldn't release Switch games, since it helps sell the Switch console, but there's no valid reason why they shouldn't release all their best selling games from their older consoles on PC, XBOX and Playstation. It's almost like the execs at Nintendo are scared of making money.

The morons who run Nintendo won't even make their old classic games available on the Switch.

@stonergravy: Why would Sony do that? That'd be idiotic. Do you think Microsoft is considering this out of the kindness of their heart? They realize that PlayStation has been completely outselling them on consoles and if they want to increase profit they need that market as well. It's all business. Sony wouldn't gain anything by letting their games into other platforms.
