Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Sets The Record Straight On His VR Feelings

"I probably overstated," Spencer says.

Xbox head Phil Spencer made waves back in December when he made comments that seemed dismissive of VR, suggesting it was too niche and that customers simply aren't asking for it. In a new interview, he's toned it down a bit, clarifying that his team simply isn't focused on VR right now.

"I probably overstated," Spencer said on the podcast Gamertag Radio. "For the people who love VR and the experiences that are being built, no disrespect to any of the teams there. My main point was I wanted to be clear with our customers on where our focus was. If somebody was waiting for us to bring out a headset for Series X at launch, I was just trying to say, we're not going to do that."

Now Playing: Xbox Series X Backwards Compatibility Is Being Tested By Phil Spencer Himself - GS News Update

He went on to explain that bringing VR to a console platform is "not as simple as just plugging a headset in," since the specialized console UI means it has to be custom-fitted for a VR interface. Right now, he said, "Our most precious resource is the team and their ability, I just have to focus on the things we're doing right now."

Spencer also explained that VR is closely associated with Windows, and so the company is still keeping a close eye on the movement of the industry and progress towards VR adoption.

"We're never going to close our eyes to where things are going," he said. "I don't hope it goes away. I hope it gets bigger, I hope it's something that's just so important that it'd be a no brainer for us to support it. My main point wasn't to shade anyone who's working on VR or anything but really just about the stuff we're focused on and that's not part of the equation right now."

Microsoft has seemed hesitant about embracing VR on its console platforms. The company initially said the Xbox One X was "VR-ready," but VR support never materialized. It also continues to experiment with the AR device Hololens, but hasn't indicated if or when it would be used for gaming applications.

Right now the Spencer seems to be focusing his efforts on the Xbox Series X, which may be closely tied to its cloud gaming services. That prompted him to say recently that he sees its chief competition as Amazon and Google, rather than traditional console competitors Sony and Nintendo.

I was hoping the new Xbox would support VR, disappointing. Will have to get a better PC at some point that can handle it.

What I don't get is these people who are like 'consoles have to support VR in order to succeed' but thought the Kinect was the Antichrist, when the situations are VERY similar. Just like with the Kinect, EVERYONE will have to have one in order to have game developers put in REAL support for it. Both peripherals would do great *if* everyone owns one AND you can get them over their fear of new technology.

@shulet: Sony's PS VR headset has only moved 5 million units. In the grand scheme of things, that's really not a game changer. It's good, but not a massive success. Console VR is pretty weak at this point, look at how stripped down Skyrim VR was for PS4 just so it could run well. Skyrim is a last gen game.

Now if PS VR had sold 20 million units, I would see why Xbox would want to get in on that action. Right now, PC is still VR's most viable home.

@shulet: I haven't heard a single person ever say that a console won't succeed if it doesn't support VR. Show me where a single person said that so I can laugh at them.

Spencer was right from the start. VR is in it's infancy at best. I can really see it going away just like curved HDTVs have. Spencer is doing the right thing by focusing on gaming. I get motion sick, and most people can only play for 30 minutes maybe up to an hour before feeling sick. That itself doesn't sound like fun to me. I don't care how "amazing" the experience is. It's still early tech. Spencer/Microsoft/Xbox have plenty of time and the hardware will be there when the time comes, if it comes. He has had it right from the start. Like said below... media leave him alone. He doesn't need to make excuses or explain himself.

@darthbuzzard: I wouldn't say it's impossible for it to go away. It has established it's roots pretty well, but it's still a niche device compared to console and PC gaming directly. It's a bit of an investment on top of the money spent on a PC or Console.

@robertbyronz: I can understand your points from the perspective of someone who gets motion sick. But I wouldnt say most people can only play for 30 minutes or an hour. It depends on which headset you're using because they've gotten better. But even on my parents I've been able to play firewall zero hour and astrobotic for 2+ hour sessions. Even then I just got off not due to motion sickness but because I just wanted to do something else.

@dacontag: There are still a lot of people who don't like having that weighted helmet on, gets hot and also requires room to use. I also don't think a lot of people like to be completely blinded to their environment while they play. The investment is steep and without some sort of walking pad, movement is limited with the point and click or takes a lot of getting used to moving with the thumbstick. Motion controls are also still not as solid as a controller in your hand.

These are just some of the challenges that VR faces to become more mainstream and some are just the nature of VR. It's also not great for every genre, driving and horror games seem to excel on it, games like pool and ping pong as well. Other genres are still a bit rough.

I mean to be honest, he wasn't wrong back in December and he's not wrong now. He shouldn't have to apologise when what he said is 110% true. Most gamers don't care for VR. A good example would be PlayStation. Over the 100+ million PS4 owners only 4-5% actually own the headset (if I remember correctly the last sales figures Sony told the media was 4 million PSVR sold). PSVR sold the most out of every other VR but is the weakest/cheapest of all the VRs.

The amount sold is more than enough to tell you that VR is a great piece of tech but most gamers don't want it nor do they care whether it be console or PC.

Phil Spencer not focusing on VR right now makes sense, since it would more of waste as of right now but they may look at it in the future again assume it takes off

@jako998: Exactly, right now they are really just trying to nail the basics of their next gen console, get that right. Get some killer IP's and show gamers they are in. Shoehorning VR into the next console could bring back memories of Kinect as well, which was one peripheral Xbox was banking heavily on.

If PSVR had moved 20 million units, I could see Xbox investing, right now though, they are completely focused on getting the series X off the ground and running. VR can come later.

That's one of the perks for PC Gaming - you don't have to ask any company for it. If It's the very latest tech, then it's there to use.

It's for the best, right now. I mean, I grabbed a PSVR to play Resident Evil 7's VR mode and while it was awesome, it left a lot to be desired... and then no other FULL AAA games seemed to materialize.

Everything is a sit/stand tech-demo or mini game with motion controls. I just want to move around like I always do with a controller, but with the added benefit of being able to look around like I'm "In the game". Just treat the VR headset like a special TV FFS and it would add SO much to our current games.

@skyhighgam3r: along with what firewall zero hour, I would also recommend astrobotic. It's a lot of fun and I dont normally play platformers like that.

@skyhighgam3r:

In our gaming circle, we have all VR (except for Valve Index) and our best, most 'go-back-to' experience was Firewall Zero Hour on PSVR with the PSVR gun. We played so many hours together playing that and what makes the experience so realistic is using it with the PSVR gun (PSVR Aim). It's extremely immersive and intense. After playing it for so long, we all agree it's hard to play regular shooters such as COD, PUBG, Apex Legends, etc. We're excited for PSVR 2 and, hopefully, a potential sequel to Firewall. We've more than had our money's worth from that game alone.

Phil Spencer has made some serious mis-steps as of late. Gambling on Streaming formats is IMO one of the biggest gambles. I have yet to ever see a service like that be good or not have lag issues. I still like Phil, but hes already starting to make some mistakes IMO. When he stated Sony is no longer a direct competitor, but Amazon and Stadia were I knew he has lost touch with the core gaming crowd. I am calling it now Sony has already one this new generation before it has even started yet. This coming from a fan of Xbox!

@creepshow2: The only misstep I think Xbox has made recently is making all their next gen exclusive games playable on the Xbox One as well. From a software sales point it sounds good, but for getting your next gen system off the ground, I think it's a mistake.

I disagree with all the others. Cloud gaming is here, it might take a few years, maybe another gen before it's fully functional, but letting Google plant the stakes in that territory before the big 3 in gaming is unnecessary ceding of ground in gaming. I think it's smart the way they starting the program. I don't know if Xbox will win, or outsell PS5, but I don't think they are going to lose like Xbox One again.

@creepshow2: One of the biggest mistakes? That's one of the smartest moves they could make. Whether you like it or not games are going the way of Netflix and Xbox getting a huge jump on it now is very important. And he was right about Google and Amazon. Sony is actually small fish compared to those 3. Amazon and Google have billions upon billions they can spend without worry and they have enough of a global impact in the services area to support their platforms. There's a much larger picture outside of traditional consoles you're not seeing and that's where gaming is going.

@creepshow2: He said cloud computing is the new competition. Why do you think Sony has partnered with Microsoft for some of the Cloud services? Because even Sony sees the writing on the wall. You're $400 console is going to become extinct eventually. Software and services is where its at and Microsoft, Amazon and Google are the top 3 in Cloud computing right now.

Meh, I do not care about VR. I cannot use it for more than 15 minutes so it is useless to me. If MS really wanted to have VR support, there are plenty of headsets already out there and they already have partnership with one of the companies. All it would take is an adapter for extra USB ports (assuming there isn't enough already) and an update and boom, Xbox Series X is VR ready. If a current gen console can run a headset, pretty sure a next gen will be capable as well.

Quite the turnaround from when the X box One was first revealed, huh?

I remember hearing the groans when it was announced that it would have Kinect built in and on always. It seems Microsoft is trying to correct the errors of their past and actually listen to gamers this time.

Love him or hate him, I think part of this focus is thanks to Phil. He really seems to want to propel the brand forward and I think he realizes doing so is based on the wants and needs of gamers.

I think Microsoft is positioning themselves in a good place this go around so we could be in for a battle like in the PS3/360 days.

@videogameninja: I think so too.. and I hope so. it's good for gaming for there to be fierce competition. both Sony and MS will have the power and hopefully this times the games will be there too.. If MS comes out with 4 -6 AAA exclusives at E3, I think that will be a great launch. Fingers crossed!

@videogameninja: I don't know about that. That would take a hell of a lot of ps4 owners to jump ship, and with backwards compatability on ps5, that sure af isn't gonna happen.

@soulmuncher666: I still remember when we went from PS3 to PS4.. I lost several games and that has never been rectified. I lost games when moving from Xbox 360 to Xbox One as well. At least I got many of the games, and game saves (cloud) back through Microsoft's backward compatibility. I will be AMAZED if Sony does anything like that with PS3 games. I'm not holding my breath.

As things stand now I understand them not seeing it as something worth pursuing. Headsets are bulky, expensive, and take a lot more power to run than a flatscreen. It's not going to stay that way though. Eventually they'll be not much larger than a pair of glasses, more affordable, and easier to run games on. VR may never take off but it will eventually get to a point where it could. MS needs to keep a close eye on what's happening in VR in case it does.

When it comes to Cloud gaming, If they do not find a way to eliminate the lag often associated with these services from the controller to the game its dead! I am all for cloud gaming if they can get the game play to be as responsive as hardware based games. I do not ever see this happening so I always look at companies focused on this as beating the dead horse.
