Xbox Boss Responds To Overwatch Director's Mouse & Keyboard Comments

Phil Spencer says he wants to give the tools to studios and let them decide what's best.

Recently, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan spoke out about mouse-and-keyboard controls on console, saying Blizzard is in discussions with Microsoft and Sony to decide how to move forward.

Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has weighed in. Writing on Twitter, Spencer said mouse-and-keyboard controls on console can "clearly" provide an advantage in some cases. But overall, he said he wants to put the tools in the hands of the studios and let them decide what works best.

Kaplan, Overwatch's game director, recently stated, "The Overwatch team objects to the use of mouse-and-keyboard on console." He added that Blizzard has reached out to Sony and Microsoft to express its "concern" about this, as well as input conversion devices. Kaplan said Blizzard wants Sony and Microsoft to either prohibit the use of mouse-and-keyboard controls and conversion devices or officially add support for those control setups for everyone.

Although the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One do not officially support mouse-and-keyboard controls, people have found ways, including converters, to make that setup work. Regarding a full, officially supported mouse-and-keyboard setup for Xbox One, Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently said he hopes this will happen in part to help RTS games grow in prominence on console.

In other Overwatch news, Blizzard recently announced that the game has crossed 25 million registered users. We may learn more about how the game is performing from a business perspective this week when Activision Blizzard reports earnings on February 9.

I am surprised no one by this time has made a K&M similar controller. We have controllers for PC games, why not keys and mouse controllers for consoles? Some games just lend themselves better to certain control types. Fighters are typically poor with K&M, RTS and shooters do better with K&M. Players should not be boxed in to their platforms.

Remove the ability to use a keyboard and mouse on console overwatch you are just screwing over the people who like to play competitvly at high levels.. I get so mad when i see someone using a k&m in console it just means they cant compete on their respective platform and have no credibility as a good player.. Ive been playing video games with a controller since ive been born so quit saying i should just "switch"... No, for one i dont have a desk where i can set up a keyboard and mouse, two i dont want to sit close to a TV monitor just so i can play better, three it would take me forever to adjust and completly throw away the years ive spent working on my aim with a controller. Let pc players use k&m and console players use controllers or else you are just going to lose console players who are fed up with it... Xbox would never switch to k&m as they would lose millions in profit on the controllers they make.. Blizzard takes a major L on this one.

I agree. They should give the tools to devs and let them decide how they want to implement it into their games.

Actually, Playstation does have an officially licensed Keyboard and Mouse and sell it on their webpage. You'll need to amend that.

Games are best played on a gamepad.

Leave the mouse and keyboard for typing up TPS Reports.

Exactly. The mouse and keyboard isn't always the dominant interface. Doing 180's turns, hand cramps and numbness with extended use and over complication of controls. The only time I'd want a m+K is playing an MMO or RTS so you I can type and use hot keys. Everything else is subjective

@lithus: my hand cramps more frequently when I use a controller than a keyboard and mouse.

And no, playing an FPS with km vs controller is not a matter of subjectivity. K&M is objectively superior by a wide margin and that's why FPS games don't have Cross-play on consoles. It's literally the only reason.

@lithus: Shooters heavily favor mouse and keyboard over controller, aiming is a lot easier when you move the crosshair with a mouse and keyboards allow for anyone proficient with a keyboard in regard to shooters to do whatever you need to do.

Mouse and keyboard are supported on PS4. You can plug in any device through usb or bluetooth and it works for ps4. It is actually the games that block its use.

@eddienoteddy : "Although the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One do not officially support mouse-and-keyboard controls, people have found ways, including converters, to make that setup work."

That's actually not true.

Look at Final Fantasy XIV on PS4. You can plug in any USB Keyboard and it works. No converters, no tricks.

A huge part of allowing Keyboard Support on Console is so that you can communicate with your teammates better.

Overwatch (and Final Fantasy XIV) have Chat Windows, where you can type on PC and communicate / talk strategy, etc. On Console, if people aren't using their Mics, guess what? No Communication possible.

Allowing Keyboard Support only *helps* people communicate. Give the players OPTIONS. Especially in something like Overwatch where Team Coordination / Team Play is critical to winning (in Competitive).

in order for there to be no advantage to one group of players if they did introduce full m & k support, just make it so that if your primary control method is m & k that you can only join servers that are m & k and vice versa if you use an xbox pad you can't join servers that are m & k.

@lithus: I enjoy my shooters (COD be damned though) however if I was to face a team that all had m+k we would get crushed. There's just a level of accuracy that a controller can't give you.

Mainly, I always prefer to use Keyboard/Mouse when I play games for FPS & RTS only. The rest like racing, 3rd person shooters and such, I always prefer using my Elite Controller, especially when play 3rd person games, it only depends on how good is your reflexes and trust me, I played games like Gears of War 4 on my PC with a controller and I do well against KB/M warriors.

Phil is right, let the developers chose what's best for the gamers.

@davillain-: GOW 4 has a max turning speed, aimassist and other speed and movement restrictions so matching k&m on that game isn't that impressive, so yeah I trust you do well with a controller on that game. Try a fps without restrictions, especially a fast game where you can turn on a dime and it's not only up to reflexes. You'd have to suck balls with m&k to not have an advantage over controllers in such games.

@ZIMdoom: This is why I really don't like Arcade Mode. Between completitive, quick play, special event, 3v3, all/random special, mystery heroes and no limit the player base is split up way to much. Finding games before it came out was already a tad to long but now I can leave the room and do things while waiting for a game. I really don't get limiting one hero in quick play. it such a waste when there is both competitive and no limit the old quick play.

@dcoutten: There's serious balance issues when multiple people can be one hero. Symmetra for example is downright infuriating and nigh impossible to beat in my experience once they set up their shield generators they basically have 6 tanks that also deploy a bunch of turrets that slow people down.

I do agree that there could be less gamemodes, as finding a game in quickplay is damn difficult and the fact that if you end up in a lobby where both teams are missing some players it will usually kick you out and say searching for another game.

@valtair: See when I play no limit or even the original quick play I didn't run into too many folks doing multiple heroes. They were still pretty balanced...well actually they usually and still don't have a healer. I play on ps4 so it would happen only occasionally. I do get the idea of having competitive, quick play, and no limit. Competitive is serious and playing with only people who are within the same rank, quick play is the fun, everyone is mixed together, and no limit is for those type of friends that just want to mess around. So I should have said "I don't get how limiting one hero in quick play [out weights the additional long finding match times, since there is 2 other similar modes]".

I'll take less modes if it means I get to play more, and those 3 modes are too similar to justify to me.

@dcoutten: I think that's a good point. I really don't mind the "one hero" quick play mode as I think there is a lot of great choices to play as. But I wonder if the game would benefit from having quick play, competitive, then a third mode on a rotation? The weekly loot box bonus could still just apply to playing that third mode if they wanted. But that way it would not dilute the player pool so much and make the gameplay far more consistent. I don't mind waiting to find a game once, but repeatedly having to wait after every single game seems like there is a problem somewhere.

@ZIMdoom: Concur. Rotating playlists outside of quick and competitive play seems the best choice by far because it makes matchmaking a lot better as if you don't always have capture the flag up there then one week put it up there I imagine finding a game for it would be way easier as people pile into the playlist to play it while they can and anyone who doesn't like that rotating playlist piles into quick play or competitive.

@baytuh99: Sorry, should have been more clear. I have the game. What frustrated me is when I have some free time, decide to sit and play Overwatch and end up spending at least half the time waiting to connect to a game, getting kicked out of empty skirmishes, etc. I play on PS4 so don't know what that base is relative to the total 25 million users...or even how many individual PLAYERS there are, as opposed to just people with multiple accounts.

@Barighm: Well there is aim assist in almost every fps when you play with a controller on console. Some game like Titanfall 2 also provide aim assist for controller on pc so it can be played with both ms+k or controller without much of a disadvantage.

I guess to make a game viable with both controls you need just enough aim assist to help out but not too much or your basicly letting the game play for you .

Some game have crazier assist than others where you can just aim/scope near an enemy player and it will automaticly snap onto that player for a short time.

So yeah, you can make some nice crazy looking kills ,but the game is doing a part of the work for you.
