Xbox Boss Reveals Next Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Game in Funny Fashion

Blue Dragon is on the way, apparently.

2006's Xbox 360 role-playing game Blue Dragon is coming to Xbox One by way of backwards compatibility, Microsoft gaming boss Phil Spencer has revealed in a funny way.

Asked straight up if the game was coming to Xbox One, Spencer said, "I'm not allowed to say but yes."

Spencer didn't say when Blue Dragon will land on Xbox One, however.

Blue Dragon, which was developed by Hironobu Sakaguchi's Mistwalker (read our review here), shipped on Xbox 360 across three discs. In May, Microsoft introduced support for multi-disc backwards compatibility titles, beginning with Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut.

There are now more than 200 Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility. You can see a list of all of them right here.

It's best to write it as backward compatibility instead of "backwards compatibility."

@Shadowdanc3r: It's so easy to mistakenly say it when your speaking, so I suppose they just run with it.

Do they have tales of versperia on the list? Hope they bring it so I can finally play it. Was mad the ps3 ver was cancelled in the west (for some shady reasons of course, the voice acting was done for additional scenes that comes in ps3 ver). Never played on 360 so hope they will bring it on xbone.

@bigdaddy0316: Yeah, Lost Odyssey is the better of the two, and an absolute must play for anyone who loves Sakaguchi's games. Might be his last really great, really big game :-(

Blue Dragon's not as good, but the gameplay's still strong, and it's kind of charming in its own right, and...well, pretty much also a must play (after you've played Lost Odyssey or committed to playing it).

@stormz: As I recall new areas have sort of a level cap, where you'll earn tons of experience until a certain level for the area, and then it'll plummet. So basically you just need to make sure you're at the max that's easy to get for an area.

Ironically the hardest battle in the game for me was the first boss battle (or maybe the second...maybe there was technically one earlier than that). Took me trial and error and luck. One other tough battle not long after, and from there no issues for me (thankfully), though that was leveling up as I could.

Red Dead has my full attention right now :) Also I bought Bioshock 1 and 2 and never played them lol. I really want to play them, I know they said they where going to be BC and Recenlty they announced a remake for the PS4,X1, and PC so I hope they don't go back on their word.

does this mean it might be a games with gold candidate for 360? i wouldnt mind playing it again but not at the cost of paying for the game again. right now, black ops 2 and rez are the only two games i still turn on my 360 for but id play blue dragon again in a heartbeat. it was one of the better early 360 games. since three disc games are now officially possible as bc candidates, im also crossing my fingers for lost odyssey and star ocean 4.

Blue Dragon is a microsoft first party game, of course they will make it BC. So far, i haven't seen any non-first party big titles become BC on X1. I haven't seen any COD games, Battlefield games, GTA games, Batman games, etc etc.

@clonewar2: Other than:

Call of Duty: Black Ops, Borderlands, Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed 2, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 3, Rainbow Six Vegas, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Mirror's Edge, Dues Ex Human Revolution, Dirt 3, Dirt Showdown, Doom 3 BFG, Fallout New Vegas, Str Wars: The Force Unleashed, Start Wars, The Force Unleashed II, The Witcher 2, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, XCOM: Enemy Within, Saints Row IV, and a few others you may or may not consider "big" title.

Care to rephrase that?

@clonewar2: maybe you should get off your Pony and open your eyes.

They've already released COD Black Ops for BC and Red Dead Redemption to name a couple. You should revise the AAA backward list before commenting.

And if it was up to MS, they would release every single game....but they need permission from the Publishers. Hence the reason behind some missing titles

@beowulf1211: if only MS had included a blu ray drive that could read 360 discs apart from the header then we wouldn't have to go thru this nonsense and every game would be playable straight off the disc.

@hazy33: It is not the BluRay that is the problem physically, but the way the system is designed at the metal where no games play directly from the disc. Even if they did that, digital titles would have the same issues as the current model since they have to be redistributed to the One as they were never licensed for distribution on that console so would require publisher permission still.

@hazy33: why does every comment section have so many ignorant f***s?

the One can read Xbox 360 discs, you can't play them from Disc because back compatible games are heavily modified versions. that's the only way to make them run in the first place >_<

they aren't emulated, they are basically really rudimentary ports.

only the 360 dashboard is getting emulated so those games can run with all their original features.

if 360 games were simply emulated Microsoft wouldn't need permission from the publishers either btw.

@kevb0ard: Interesting...okay, so technically you're just a guy on the internet so who knows, but this is what I've been suspecting they're doing. I sure wish the discs worked, but it's a LOT better than nothing! I'd know to know the technical details! I'd sort of assume the GPU portion would be easy-ish, but the CPUs while more powerful at the same clock speed (I'd assume, usually) are clocked a lot slower too.

It's so weird they need permission... I wonder if in the future console makers can put language in the licensing deals where they can modify/republish stuff

@kevb0ard: they aren't ports they are run thru the 360 dash, unmodified. MS need permission before because the xbox one can't physically read and install the data. MS doesn't own the game code (apart from it's various game studio acquisitions) so needs the publishers permission to distribute the game, ie. download to your xbox one. That is why there was no publisher permission needed for original xbox games to run on 360: everything was contained on the game disc.

@hazy33: Why wouldn't they be able to read the discs? I mean they could be doing some proprietary copywrite thing that the One DOESN'T support, but...

The idea that it's a port of sorts, recompiled, makes a lot of sense to me. Would be interesting to see file sizes too.

@wolfpup7: The only drives that can read 360 discs are certain iHas DVDRW. And as the whole BC thing wasn't started until well after the Xbox One was release it's highly unlikely it can read the discs. Headers however are standard across the board so it can read that and decide what game you've slotted in.
