Xbox Boss Says He's No Longer Trying To Move PS5 Players To Xbox

"It doesn't really benefit people to gatekeep games"

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has discussed why he's no longer trying to get all PlayStation and Nintendo players to come over to Xbox and is instead trying to meet players where they are.

"I'm not trying to move them all over to Xbox anymore," he said on the XboxEra podcast (via VGC). "We're all so invested in where our games are; let's just allow more people to play."

Spencer said it is important to invest in Microsoft's own platforms, in part because it makes a full 100% of revenue from first-party game sales, compared to 70% on PS5 and Switch, with the other 30% going to PlayStation and Nintendo, respectively. But even at 70%, that's "helpful to us being able to build great portfolios," Spencer said.

In an ideal would, Spencer said, he would want to "make all of the money for all the games" that it releases, but that simply isn't the landscape anymore.

"There are people--whether it's that their libraries are on PlayStation or Nintendo, whether it's that they like the controller better, they just like the games that are there--and I don't want to then look at that and say 'Well, there's no way that we should be able to build a business there, find fans of our franchises there.'"

He added: "I know it's not what everybody else is doing, but I just believe games should be the thing that's at the forefront. It doesn't really benefit people to gatekeep games. Restricting where games can be played is not helping the games themselves."

Also in the interview, Spencer mentioned that, with Microsoft's new multiplatform approach, he aims to be "transparent with people." And this means if Microsoft is putting a first-party game on Switch or PS5 or Steam, fans can expect to see logos for those systems, even during Microsoft's own games showcases.

"People should know the storefronts where they can get our games," he said.

One of the next big Xbox game to come to PlayStation is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which comes to PS5 this spring following its debut on Xbox in 2024. After that, Doom: The Dark Ages comes out in May for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, launching on all platforms at the same time. The RPG Avowed from Microsoft-owned studio Obsidian launches for everyone on February 18, but it has not been announced for any rival platforms outside of Xbox and PC.

Microsoft embracing this new kind of strategy comes at the same time that Xbox is in third place as it relates to console sales, with Xbox Series X|S tracking behind the PS5 and Nintendo Switch. As Spencer noted, Microsoft stands apart in being a platform-holder launching its own games on rival platforms, as Sony and Nintendo generally do not do that on console.

This strategy makes perfect sense for MS. When you've got bangers like Forza, Indy, Halo, GoW etc. why wouldn't you want to port them to other consoles and cash in?

For me the only concern is that MS will at some point decide not to bother releasing XBOX consoles, which will be a sad day for those of us who prefer the hardware, interface, achievements and infrastructure to anything on offer from Sony or Nintendo. It doesn't sound like this is on the cards in the short to medium term, though.

Let's just hope that the extra 30% from first party software sales acts as sufficient incentive for MS to keep churning out hardware....

IMO, there's zero incentive for Xbox, because 100% of titles and even Gamepass is on PC. Not only that, Gamepass is cheaper on PC.

Playstation is my console.

PC is my PC.

And if I want a handheld, Switch. Daughter loves Mario.

Just how it is. I think MS has wanted to move away from hardware anyways.

Make a machine that's faster than PS5 pro and I will buy it. That simple. No reason to play anythingon Xbox now that I have ps5 pro.

As a site that does video game journalism, Spencer spoke openly and at length just prior to the current gen launch about ending the console war and having games on all platforms. Guess people just filtered that out…

For PS5 players that aren't aware, and want a deal on PS+... They're running a sale for PS Premium (the highest tier) for $99. It's usually $159. For some reason they list the $99 sale price for both the Extra and Premium tiers. Like why would anyone choose the middle tier for the same price as the top tier? Lol.

I only noticed because as I was playing Ghost of Tsushima today, I couldn't play because my sub expired. I must have gotten this deal last year as well. Not sure if it's only for the US as a Presidents Day Sale though.

@Vodoo: Good looking out, bro. My old subscription just ended and I was hesitant to renew it. Didn't want to pay full prince, so this came in just in time.

@sportjames23: Remember this sale for Presidents Day next year also. Hell... Mark it on your phone's calendar, lol. It's the best deal I've ever seen for the top tier of Plus (which I didn't have before this sale).

@Slannmage: The only thing PC won was bad ports and overpriced computer parts. Enjoy the tariffs. PC gaming was already too expensive for no reason and now it’s worse.

@xikaryo: PC has it's advantages and PS5 or consoles has theirs but what matters is what each has to offer and console(I own both consoles and PC) just does not do it for me as I have a bigger selection games and I can tailor it for my tastes where as you can't with a console, but like everything is subjective.

Yeah, like everyone saw this coming; buy a bunch of studios and focus on being a game publisher rather focusing on one platform that's always behind. They still have Windows PC and will hopefully still make powerful consoles regardless of how well they do as a third-party publisher. But it's like after two decades, they're still trying to find their place in the video game ecosystem.

@bdrtfm: they didn't even try the "buy studios then let them make great exclusive games" strategy before hand which is the really sad part. seriously just look at all those studios microsoft bought pretty much half of them haven't even had a game release since being bought that was exclusive.

i personally think they should have atleast tried that approach before giving up on consoles entirely because by not having any exclusives and giving everything to the alternative platforms while getting nothing in return is a death sentence for their console business and a spit in the face to people who have put 3 or even 4 generations into xbox consoles.

@xnshd: It's not like people will be selling their Xboxes, they chose to buy that console for a reason. They will also get more players on other platforms too.

@girlusocrazy: Players chose to buy a Series X because, as the most powerful console available (Not including PS5 Pro), MS was saying the games would be fully optimized for it. If anyone even remotely thought they would make the X be handicapped because of parity with the S, no one would have bought it. And rightly so. Back at launch there was even talk of X-Exclusives.

I WISH I could get my money back from MS for false advertising. Thankfully I have a PS5, but many Xbox owners are stuck with just an Xbox.

@girlusocrazy: problem is next gen when people have a choice what console to get again.

most people thinking this is a positive for people already with an xbox arent thinking long term which is the problem since its next gen when you are really gonna see xbox console player numbers on their arse.

when next gen comes and people have to make that choice most people are gonna choose the console that has access to the most games/best exclusives. microsoft giving all their games over to rival platforms means they don't have either of those factors and for me game pass alone isn't going to be a good enough reason to make people pick an xbox console over a rival one.

@xnshd: It may indeed be a positive for both MS and gamers.

Sega did the same; and it saved their company (not claiming MS is in any danger). Today, there's quite a few Sega titles I enjoy.

I think MS can make more money and do more if they leave hardware. It's no secret that hardware is usually a loss leader. So cut that, and just sell software on PC/other platforms.

@CyberEarth: good luck getting the people you burned with libaries on your hardware to try buy your games over on rival platforms after they basically pushed the give up button without even really giving the exclusive strategy a try after spending close to $100 billion on studios.

Sega did it to save their company microsoft did it for shortsighted short term gain due to the activision blizzard acquisition and instead of playing the long game and seeing what all these new teams could do they went with the "whats the quickest way we can start seeing some money back on this" route which by doing so killed off their brand basically.

@xnshd: I'm old enough to remember all the hardware Sega was pushing. 32x, Sega CD, etc. The 32x was especially poor, because as soon as it arrived in North America, Saturn was announced in Japan.

Is this what they are calling Quiet Quitting at work nowadays?

Don't answer me, like MS gaming division, I just stopped caring.
