Xbox Boss Says Microsoft Will Still "Take Risks" After Scalebound Cancellation

"I know we have to take risks," Phil Spencer says.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced that it had canceled the Xbox One and PC game Scalebound, which was in development at Bayonetta studio Platinum Games. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer said it was a "difficult" decision to cancel the project, but one that is ultimately "better for Xbox gamers."

Now, Spencer has spoken up again about Scalebound's cancellation. Writing on Twitter today (via DualShockers), Spencer vowed that Microsoft will continue to take "risks" with the game's it greenlights.

"I know we have to take risks," he said. "I realize right now probably sounds hollow but I agree."

In another tweet, Spencer said the cancellation of Scalebound won't stop Microsoft from signing third-party games in the future. At the same time, you can expect Microsoft to of course continue to invest in projects from its own studios as well.

"I won't abandon signing independent studio projects but I agree first-party internal studios are critical," he said.

Spencer also personally apologized for cancelling Scalebound. "It hurt me as well and to the community I apologize. I want everything we start to turn out great, to take risks, create diversity," he said.

Someone asked Spencer if getting Scalebound finished was simply a matter of putting more money into the game's development. It's not that simple, he said.

"Apologies but this isn't how games get built. There isn't a pour in $X and get game. Much more iterative and organic than that," he said.

For more on Scalebound, you can read Platinum's statement about the cancellation here, while the game's director responded to rumors that he was taking time off. You can also check out GameSpot's new roundup, "Everything We Knew About Scalebound."

Oh great Xbox cancels a game that nearly everyone thought was meh about 6 months ago and it's an open invitation for the trolls and fanboys in the comments to exclaim it's the end of the Xbox. What a surprise.

@khosatralkhel: As an Xbox owner, it's not about this game in particular, it's about games in general getting canned. I was decently looking forward to this, and very much Fable Legends as well. It just seems like MS is canceling way to many games lately.

@dashaka: I agree with you, shutting down Lionhead Studio's and Press Play this year has been very disappointing and I want to see announcements about new studios from MS. Sony is also closing studios (Guerrilla Games Cambridge just recently) but we don't hear about it from the games press for some reason.

Any cancellation of a game or studio getting shut down is a bad thing in my eyes but when MS does it everyone jumps on them.

Unreleated news but why isn't this making the news on here???: Come on Sony dronies you can yap all you like about MS closing studios down. But Shuhei "for the gamers" Yoshida seems to be doing the dirty. Or is this studio irrelevent.

"I apologize" -- GFY. I won't buy your crappy console or waste any time with a publisher that won't see games through. Sell the f*cking rights to another publisher then. Why let all the hard work Platinum put in go to waste like that?

Making a game is hard, hard work, and it takes more than money. The cancellation of Scalebound didn't happen overnight, it went over the course of month and months and months of problems of all kinds (a lot of which we don't and never will know). My guess, this only my opinion not fact, but my guess is that Platinum had 2 giant games competing for time and money etc, Scalebound and Nier. both of those games needed (no, demand) Platinum's full undivided attention for them to succeed. So for know it's disappointing, I was looking forward to Scalebound but i'm not going to start raging at microsoft or people, for know my hope is that maybe in the coming months something awesome gets announced and we can all relax again.

@silentrambo: Some people think this is all about MS bullying Platinum but from what I've read it looks like Platinum were missing deadlines and then staff were sent on holiday because of stress further exacerbating the problem.

Last thing we all heard the game was meant to be released in 2016 but was delayed to 2017 so that tells us the game probably wasn't going to be released until 2018 because of problems with the engine which was also reported on in Eurogamer. Since development started in 2012 that would be a 6 year dev cycle. For AAA games with co-op/multiplayer they usually cost around the 70+ million range and average at about 3 years to develop which means that the budget for Scalebound would be huge by the time it released. We also know there was a lot of scepticism about the game from the gaming community at large with people saying the framerate looked terrible, the lead protagonist annoying and the gameplay meh and that led to minimal hype from media and gamers alike (apart from the bragging rights in fanboy lists which I'll ignore).

MS has also just come off 2 original IP's selling less than expected this year with Quantum Break and Recore, not to mention Spencer talking about how he wants to invest more in first party. It all makes sense that this game was cancelled. I'm personally disappointed as it looked interesting and I feel sorry for people who were genuinely looking forward to it but the narrative against MS to me is just an emotional knee jerk reaction from a crowd that is looking for the next reason to hate Xbox. This wasn't The Last Guardian (I've read many comparisons to the situation of that game) which was beloved by PS fans and media since it was first announced, people need to get some perspective.

@silentrambo: I don't think they were that divided between this and NieR. It's being directed by the original (square enix) nier director and in collaboration with other people from the original team. I personally think Platinum and Microsoft were having some serious disagreements with what the game should be. I've heard Kamiya is pretty demanding and assured of what he wants. Microsoft probably pushed for more of one thing and less of another, and they butted heads until both parties realized they couldn't work together, and well, this happened. Of course, I'm also just speculating. We may never know, but at least we still get NieR, and it looks fantastic.

@silentrambo: my guess is that Platinum's vision was too large for the X1 and they couldn't get it to run properly. So, Microsoft asked them to scale it down, to which Platinum replied, NOPE. We all know the performance issues the console has and this game would've exposed those issues to another degree. If Microsoft wants to make up for this, sell the rights to another publisher -- they won't, obviously. This is MS -- they take over companies and market crappy stuff.

i wasnt personally excited for this game. Looked like a linear bayonetta knockoff however if they cancelled it due to PG being idiots with the money then cool. Sony fanboys all are going yeahhhh ahahah balah blah blah but I would rather have the game cancelled then wait years for it and have a no mans sky situation.

@2wireg: agreed. Scalebound had a cool single-player gameplay trailer. Then i saw the 4-man co-op gameplay footage & couldn't believe how utterly shitty it looked. It just looked like a jumbled mess. No idea why it was scrapped but if i had to guess it prob had something to do with the awful multi-player aspect

Xbox should have kept Bioware in-house. Mass Effect was hands down their best exclusive IP. Hopefully Remedy will quit fucking around & announce Alan Wake 2.

It may sound like I'm trolling or pandering here but I recently got a X1 this christmas and to be quite honest aren't that thrilled about it. Scalebound was definitely a game I was interested in and am saddened that the game got cancelled. But in all honesty getting that X1 was quite pointless since I will be doing most of my gaming on my PS4 and that console is loaded with excellent first party games whereas X1 is loaded with a bunch of empty promises that "the games will come". I seriously have no confidence with them unlike last gen with the 360. Also on a side note I find the X1 UI to be quite messy as compared to the streamlined PS4 where I can easily access the games, apps etc. that I am searching for. Overall not pleased with this product at all right now.

@flexappeal: I think you're confusing familiarity with usability Sony has been using the same UI for over 10 years. Games are a matter of preference so I won't argue that some people like niche Japanese games and indies the majority likes big AAA games like Halo,Uncharted etc, but when it comes to features the Xbox is second to none.

@DIOSNY: You sir do have a point in regards to the UI. I do however still find it messy. In regards to features, I couldn't care less since I buy consoles for the sole of purpose of playing games and thus far X1 has disappointed. Losing a game like Scalebound that was heavily promoted by MS do not bolster confidence in their products. Don't get me wrong I'm still excited for it but I'm sure I'm not the only one who is sorely looking forward to playing new IP's on this thing.

@DIOSNY: To each their own. It's great that devices nowadays are multi purpose. Believe me I do appreciate that fact. All I'm saying is that in regards to my consoles, I bought them for the sole purpose of playing video games and not as a media hub etc. It's great that I can do that on my X1 but it's not a feature that I will be using. In regards to the PSN vs X1 community I can't really comment on that. It's an insult to both communities to generalize one group over the other.

I guess we'll never know what really happened. I was just playing the Wonderful 101 again the other day. It's incredible. I would say, however, recent releases from Platinum like TMNT and transformers have been sub par. Maybe things aren't what they used to be over there.

@jimbobimbo: could be more money for other IPs. Could also be the game wasn't in a good state and would take additional years to get done. Do you think it would be good for Xbox gamers to get a half baked game after years of development?

All I know is, scalebound was announced way before nier automata but nier is finished and why scalebound is not.....what did PG do with the money? Didn't they put enough people on the project? Did PG want more money to finish the game which means less money for other projects?

I would like to hear some explanations too but ultimately we would only be getting one side of the story.

Hopefully this comes to fruition. Besides maybe Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive Microsoft/Xbox has played it pretty safe with their exclusive games this gen. The biggest exclusive titles have pretty much all been sequels (Forza, Halo, Gears, Dead Rising). I'm hoping to see more new IPs and different types of games.

Whether you like or dislike playstation exclusives there is a little bit of everything. Games such as Until Dawn, Bloodborne, Knack, Killzone, Horizon, Drive club and Grand Turismo, MLB, Uncharted, etc. Not saying these are all great titles, quality certainly varies, it's at least a nice mix of genres and game styles.

I don't care about consoles but those players are doing the impossible to make us feel... superior?

I can't understand those who enjoy when other consoles wont have an exclusive, while, in their console (technically THE SAME), they have few exclusives, but that is not the worse (I've been playing 1 game for years if is good enough), problem is that their exclusives are usually sentimental-emo-casual-fanboyism that they easily pass in a day, and bye.

Be serious, how many of you still playing that explorer, or that stupid girl with zombies, or any emo-movie after finished first time?

Cancellations and unlimited delays happens in all consoles, remember that game of the giant dog announced for PS3? well, you have it for PS4, with graphics of PS3 (you really know how invest your money).

You still choosing to depend in 1 enterprise for all, so you, all console players, deserve what you get because you don't care about your money, your time, the quality, longevity and flexibility in which you play your games.

These ridiculous console-fights will end when you decide to play games as they meant to be played, in the best platform, with all genres, in highest quality, forever, and with mods...

Xbox doesn't take risks. EVER! just like how they turned down Heavy Rain's pitch for being to adult and different. Sony made the game and its one of my favorites from last gen. They are too afraid to take risk and that's whats needed to make art.
