Xbox Boss Talks Backwards Compatibility Ambitions

Will Black Ops II ever come to the program?

The Xbox One's backwards compatibility feature has been a big hit, players collectively spending more than 145 million hours playing Xbox 360 games on Xbox One since the feature landed in November 2015. Part of the reason why the program has been so successful may come down to the fact that Microsoft has steadily added new games to the catalog, including much-requested ones like Red Dead Redemption and Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has shared a little more insight into his ambitions for the program. Asked on Twitter if Call of Duty: Black Ops II was going to be added to the catalog, Spencer didn't confirm one way or the other. Instead, he said, "I like the progress on [backwards compatibility]," he said. "We'd like to have all and work on [third-party] games is always a partnership with publisher."

There is certainly demand for Black Ops II to be added to the catalog. The 2012 shooter from Treyarch is currently the most-requested game for inclusion on the Xbox Feedback site, with more than 193,000 votes. There are no guarantees, however, that Black Ops II or any other community-requested title will ever come to the program. As Spencer said, publishers get to make the call.

Black Ops II wouldn't be the first Call of Duty title in the Xbox One backwards compatibility catalog, as Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Call of Duty: World at War are already in. You can see all 250-plus backwards compatibility games here.

Just this week, Microsoft added four more games to the Xbox One backwards compatibility catalog, including Jurassic Park: The Game, Battlestations: Midway, Dragon's Lair, and Tour de France 2011.

What games would you like to see added to the Xbox One backwards compatibility program? Let us know in the comments below.

I think the hey day of BC games is coming to an end. First they are running out of decent games to BC. Second the producers have wised up, all they have to do is re-master a 360 game and sell it again at full price. Why give MS the ok when they can make money off it if they re-master?

Spencer patting himself on the back for a job well done with backwards compatibility, hilarious.

I remember a time when BC didn't equate to dribbling out a few titles here and there over the course of a year but actually meant your console played all the games from the last gen, you just put them in your new console and they worked.

What a hopeless clown that man is.

@blueinheaven: Well, you know how you can play your old PS3 titles on PS4 right? You either purchase the redone upscaled version or pay to stream a title you already own. Historically, console's ability to play last gen titles works only when the last gen hardware is also included in the new console...this is not the case here. The Xbox 360 chipset is emulated for the Xbox One, which I would mention is done quite well, something I would probably say is impossible to do with the PS3(cell) hardware, thus you can only play past titles by streaming from a server. As Spencer has mentioned, it's up to the developer to permit emulation of their software...Black Ops II was such a massive hit last generation, so why would the developer permit emulation to run on Xbox One? Would it improve sales of Black Ops III or reduce sales? Free emulation of Black Ops II currently would negatively affect sales of Black Ops III, which is as, as you know, an improved version of Black Ops II. So, if this bothers you so much, simply dump your Xbox One and grab a PS4 and pay to stream already owned PS3 titles...or perhaps grab an original 60gb PS3 so you can insert your old PS2 discs...developers want you to purchase their new or re-released titles to make money...providing things for free makes no financial sense...I am surprised they offer any compatible games at all really...except that some developers, I assume, are hoping Xbox One owners, who do not already own several Xbox 360 titles yet, may do so from the store, thus providing them with further income.

P.S. I have always wondered why Phil Spencer was hired for his role at Microsoft, for I can't see him really play any game, but still why insult someone who has no control in what Microsoft does?

cheers,

SEADRIVE

correct me if im wrong but doesnt "backwards compatability" mean every game.

wow, they have really programed everyone to perfection, living in hope that their favorite game will soon become unlocked.

real backwards compatiblity is every game and now. not this 3 years later and we have about 11 percent of games that are BC.

whoever started this is a genius. just look at everyone begging for their favorites.

wake me up when this "fake"wards compatiblity program is finished. oh wait just wait me when next gen is actually have as good as the 360 and ps3 are.

Chrome Hounds!

Though I think a Re-Master, or Reboot would be much better, with more customization..

@Lach0121: Chrome Hounds was definitely an awesome game for it's time. But I don't think it will have "aged" very well if they were to go BC with it. I'd prefer a "sequel" of some sort.

Maybe MW3 but only really enjoyed the MITD and Infection on that one but even MW2 would be nice. Just a casual gaming fella but really anything that was purchased for the 360 I enjoy seeing BC on the One. If nothing else it makes my past purchases still seem relevant.

Now just imagine if you had BC built into the XB1 you wouldn't of needed to do all this shit. This is what happens when you emulate games, all sorts of licensing issues.

@chiefwiggum16: The emulation is not the issue, it is the redistribution on a system that the games were never licensed to be released on in the first place that is the issue here. If they ran from the original discs, even emulated, as they did on the 360 (which also used emulation) then no permissions or licensing would be required. But that would rule out every digital game as they would still need the same requirements that are currently being used in terms of permission and licensing.

@chiefwiggum16: The licensing issues would still exist. The licenses were for Xbox 360. Whether it's hardware built into the Xbox One, or recompiled or emulated updates to older games, it doesn't change the legal red tape concerning licensing.

@chiefwiggum16: easy ps2 and wii u aren't dealing with digital content.

Yes physical hardware could play the discs but any digital content would require licensing.
