Xbox Confirms Four First-Party Games Are Coming To PlayStation And Nintendo Switch

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer revealed the news on the Xbox podcast, but has yet to announce which games are making the jump.

Four Xbox exclusives are headed to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. Microsoft confirmed the news via its official Xbox podcast, during which Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer declared the decision was a part of the company's growth strategy. While Spencer did not state which games would be making the jump, explaining that he didn't want to "take anything away" from the respective studios planning to make individual announcements, he did confirm that both Indiana Jones and Starfield will remain Xbox exclusives.

But while Spencer remains quiet on the specifics, a recent report by The Verge's Tom Warren claims that Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded are the four games Xbox is bringing to new consoles. These titles perfectly align with what Spencer continued on to say about the four games on the podcast:

Now Playing: Why Pentiment Is Fallout New Vegas Designer’s Dream Project

"Two of them are kind of community-driven games that will end up on other platforms and give us the ability to continue to invest in them. We think that's great for the business and great for the communities--more players to play with," Spencer said. "Two of the other games are smaller games that were never really meant to be built as kind of platform exclusives and all the fanfare that goes around that, but games that our teams really wanted to go build that we love supporting creative endeavors across our studios regardless of size."

Exciting as this all is, however, Spencer also stated that players on other platforms should not take these games coming over as "some signal that everything is coming. It's not." Spencer explained that Microsoft will only bring Xbox games to other consoles when it won't "damage Xbox" and the company can still grow its business "using what other platforms have to help us with that," which is not the case for every game. Spencer also expressed that part of bringing games to other consoles is simply to get players on other platforms more interested in Xbox and its franchises.

In other Xbox news, Microsoft also announced that Diablo 4 is coming to Xbox Game Pass. This marks the first Activision Blizzard game to come to the subscription service following it being acquired by Microsoft. The company also shared that Game Pass currently has 34 million members and will not be coming to PlayStation or Nintendo Switch, despite rumors that emerged late last year. Additionally, new Xbox hardware is launching later in 2024.

As an Xbox owner, cool.

Good for other gamers, good for the devs, costs me nothing.

Being loyal to a corporation is something you should grow out of as a teen. Sony and Xbox care exactly the same amount about you, which is to say not at all, regardless of which console you own and/or go to bat for in comments sections. I'm as committed to the company that makes my games console as I am to the one who makes my toaster.

Sea of Thieves and Grounded are both well worth checking out.

Wish we could get some of the PS exclusives, though. Sony really has Xbox beat in that regard.

@joshbuckler2: that's a more mature position than someone justifying Xbox brand loyalty because MS is higher in SP 500. Pretentious as it gets, I know.

Good. Tear down the walls. They're archaic from a time that games were not digital (and hardware actually mattered).

As a PS5 owner, you can keep your 4 junk games. When I read the title I was hoping for Forza.

@strategyfn: Grounded is a lot of fun, and Sea of Thieves is too if you’ve got a friend or two to play with.

Its been a strange gen and it seems next gen might be even stranger. Microsoft and Sony went from one making memes about the other over game sharing and TV, TV, TV to Sony putting their games on Microsoft Windows and Microsoft putting more games on PlayStation besides Minecraft , more cross-play games etc. Be interesting to see PlayStation games on Xbox but that's highly unlikely. You never know though. Either way, the next few years are going to be interesting to watch.

@bdrtfm: omg another one saying pc = Microsoft windows. You don't pay Microsoft for every pc game you buy. It's pc operating system. Like saying you have to pay Sony ui on ps5 everytime you buy a game. Pc does not = Microsoft. It comes with your pc.

Microsoft does not get money when you buy a sony game on pc.

This is what I pretty much expected. I expected Sea of Thieves & Grounded to be prime members as they make the most sense and even belong on the Switch. Those are more for the kiddies and there is no reason to hold em back, In fact I can due without them personally. Hi-Fi Rush & Battle Toads are also good contenders.

But geeez, I feel like I am in a bath of marshmallows and bubbles with all the constant fluff that is spewed by Phil & company. If you REALLY want more people to play, then just drop your console and put your games for free on all the consoles. So lets just keep it real then and say that you want more money from new players to serve as the foundation for your decision. Money which can be back fed to create more games and make the console & brand even better. If Sony does not follow suit, they will be in trouble. This is just the start and we will see more & more games appear on opposing consoles. Expect to see the older Spidy games in two years on XB!

I really do hope XB makes a huge comeback, but I have been hoping this for years now. They also really need to bring back Backwards Compatibility and increase the game catalogue.

@just1mohr: I don't think Battle Toads will be one of those. The other choices are better games and have a better chance at making some money some place else.

@just1mohr: I completely agree with everything you said except for the Sony will be in trouble thing. Same for Nintendo. I’ve always believed that eventually, the less than top five exclusives will come to all platforms. But the extremely popular games a la GOW, Last of Us, Halo, Mario, Zelda, Horizon, Forza, Metroid, and anything Donkey Kong will never not be exclusive to those platforms. But just maybe we will see Uncharted, Gears, Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Ghost of Tsushima and more importantly Spider-Man, will eventually show up on other platforms. This is a stepping stone because I give it ten years and owning a game will be obsolete.

@Viper13579: Yes, and I did not say all of the games will come, but some will like Spidy. I don't think many people are playing GOW 1 & 2, so they can potentially come and why wouldn't they be smart enough to entice any chance of new players going to PS as a secondary source just for something like GOW. Games like the main Mario, Zelda, & DKC, oh hell no. At least not for at least 10-15 years and even then they might be forced to go to global devices. Off-shoots from main games will definitely appear on mobile.

Sony will be in trouble if they never made their games available on PC, and other consoles (Switch/XB), and they will need to make mobile games as well. In trouble with long term development of future games, since XB will make the additional funds for newly developed games and tons more games will get dumped by XB in a few years.

@just1mohr: But Spencer eventually announced that Starfield and the new Indiana Jones will stay exclusive for the time being. And Sony does make games that are multiplatform, just not their biggest exclusives. Sony has released their exclusives on PC, only Bloodborne hasn’t. But in your rebuttal you said that Mario, etc, will not be multiplatform anytime soon, and probably Halo too, but said that Sony should release GOW. Why? It’s still popular. A DLC just got released a few months ago. Why can’t Spider-Man, Uncharted, Ghost of Tsushima, and eventually Helldivers, not be enough. Now in fifteen years, when everything changes, I can understand. But Sony will be fine until then if they only release a few multi platform. Hell, they are #1.

@Viper13579: Sorry, I mean to say that I don't think Sony will hold on to the older GOW games forever. GOW 1 & 2 and eventually 3.

It would be smart for them to give new comers a taste & get the updates when they buy a new PS.

If putting their games on other platforms will result in more money at a time where their revenue is low, they'll do it. They fundamentally have to. The line must go up, it's their fiduciary duty. They are shackled to this rule.

Nintendo is a bit of a special case because their own games (as in, first-party games) break sales record all the time, so their line keeps going up. There may be some of that Japanese honor at play as well, where they'd sooner die than accept the shame of relinquishing their exclusives to another platform. They always find a way to bounce back without throwing the competition any bones.

It's interesting then, that PlayStation and Xbox are both doing poorly enough that they're being forced to become more consumer-friendly... out of greed. For once, their desperation for profits actually benefits us.

Well, to some extent anyway. The problem is, if all of a company's decisions are driven purely by money, none of their games will have much artistic or cultural worth. It will just be one forgettable trend chaser after another. So it won't matter that everyone can play them... it's like being subscribed to Game Pass on a really bad month. There's all these games you can play, but why would you?

@Tiwill44: Yeah however, that isn't the case here their money isn't low in fact they are making money then they ever have at this point in this Generation. They maybe behind on console sales but PC and Mobile has been paying off really nicely at this time.

@ceelogreen94: To add to what I was saying, they still have to retain the image that they care about Xbox, otherwise they would lose that loyal fanbase cash flow all at once and the line wouldn't go up. Even if people remained loyal, it wouldn't be wise for either MS or Sony to effectively give up their entire library all at once, because then the line would suddenly spike up and come crashing down rapidly after. So they're doing 4 games now. Then they'll do more later. Line goes up steadily.

@Tiwill44: Let me say this at this time I do believe that they want to try to limit what comes over to other consoles. I can't believe that I actually them but for some reason I do I think they were considering more before the outrage so. I also think they learned what XBOX means to its players but I'm in a wait and see mode at this time.

It was very annoying to wait until the official announcement just to have Spencer say: "There'll be games coming to other consoles but I won't say which ones".

At least he was kind enough to say it within the first 2 minutes.

@sladakrobot:

Grounded and Sea of Thieves

Nintendo has always been known for being a kid's platform so I think those two games will definitely thrive in a Nintendo platform, even more than a PS console. If i have to guess i would say that the majority of the new gamers playing these games once they move to the other platforms, will come from Nintendo players.

@sladakrobot: Yeah, I think Grounded is the other one as well. The last two games are still in development and will be non-AAA games from my two sources at this time. My company doesn't really deal with the gaming industry, but I have a few friends who companies do deal with the gaming industry.

Ok, I know a lot people are still saying that it is 4 1st party games I can say that it is not what you think.

This is what I have heard from the contact I have so for. Sea of thieves is one of them and Hi-Fi Rush isn't one of them right now, that could change but right now it's one of them. Also, when he said community base games. He means live stream games only. I have to say this wasn't as bad as many of us thought.

Now, this does mean Sony will never get Gears of War, Halo, Blade and more at this time. I have heard of a handheld console but hey I believe that one when I see it at this time. In other words XBOX is in good hands for the moment.

Going multiplatform with their live games makes sense. And Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment were both well liked smaller games that could make another small splash in a new market. Meanwhile the flagship titles are still exclusives.

Now Xbox just needs more of those flagship titles. Still.

They want people to buy a playstation instead of their console. That way they can stop making hardware and have less expenses and be entire profitable with gamepass. If that service is profitable at all. They'll probably raise the subscription price.

No, what you exactly said is that Sony is getting all of xbox's exclusives. 4 games =/= all of xbox's exclusives.
