Xbox E3 2017 Briefing Date Confirmed With Project Scorpio Teaser

Expect news on Project Scorpio and State of Decay 2--and a lot more.

Microsoft today announced the day and time of its E3 2017 briefing--and it's not the same schedule as last year. The Xbox show will be held Sunday, June 11, starting at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET.

Historically, the Xbox briefing is held on the Monday of E3 week, in the morning. Though the day is changing, the venue is staying the same: the Galen Center in Los Angeles.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Xbox E3 2017 Briefing Date Confirmed With Project Scorpio Teaser

No Caption Provided

In January, Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased Microsoft's E3 2017 lineup. Before that, Spencer said 2017 will not be a FPS Halo- or Gears of War-led year, suggesting that no new games in those franchises are coming this year. Instead, Microsoft will focus on "new experiences with different IP."

State of Decay 2 developer Undead Labs confirmed today that it will have something to show at Microsoft's E3 2017 briefing.

Microsoft only announced the time and date of its E3 2017 briefing today, not any specific programming details. You can definitely expect news about Project Scorpio, as the tweet that announced the details today used an image of the system first shared at E3 2016. The system is scheduled to go on sale this holiday, so it will surely be a big focus of the event.

Microsoft is the only company to formally announce the time and date of its E3 briefing so far. Last year, Bethesda and EA's briefings took place on the Sunday before E3 week, followed by Sony and Ubisoft on the next day. EA's own E3 event, EA Play, takes place June 10-12, but the company has not announced when its briefing will take place, if it has one.

We'll report back with more details on this year's E3 as they become available.

E3 2017's show floor is open June 13-15. For the first time ever, the event is open to the public.

Games! That Scorpio don't mean squat without games. Right now MS doesn't have the best track record of releasing games they give a date for. Like Crackdown 3 for instance. Or not at all like Scalebound.

Yes yes, I know. Rares Pirate game etc etc. Which still isn't out.

I want the console to be amazing, but with out the games who really cares?

@imajinn: anyone that want the best performing games. If you play third party games then it's the way to go. Exclusives this gen have been very irrelevant. Third party games is what sells and that's what the Xbox crowd likes to play. I don't think they will miss all the Japanese junk. They can get a ps4 for that. They just want call of booty and gta. Plus it will be the best place to play the biggest game of the year.... Red Dead Redemption 2. That's a game isn't it?

I think the scorpio's market is a little bit confused. Who are they aiming at? The graphics whore? If graphics are the primary reason to want it, that person would have got a PC instead.

I'm curious to see how they price it. If it's more than $400, it will get outsold by PS4 Pro after about 3 months. I'd give MS a good 3 months of #1 sales on NPD until everyone who wanted one has one. The mainstream console gamer is more price conscious than specs conscious. Remember, the most powerful hardware does not normally win a console generation. Just look to the past and see. The winner is usually the weakest hardware.

Console players will finally have a true powerful machine that will not need Mickey Mouse tricks like checkerboarding. The beast will soon be unleashed.

@heavengirl15: it will use the checkerboard technique. I'm not saying on all games, since Microsoft said their exclusives will be native 4k,but everyone else can choose to use the power in what ever ways they feel.

@heavengirl15: You mustn't have been keeping up. A leaked MS memo to devs already suggested the checkerboarding upscaling technique.

@heavengirl15:

But that what most devs will be using for Scorpio. MS CALLS IT SPARSE RENDERING. Only some game will be 4k native.

It's doubtful that we'll be seeing many games render at native 4K, which is a shame because Microsoft seemed eager to point out that the PS4 Pro doesn't offer gamers a "true 4K" gaming experience. The obvious implication was that Project Scorpio would in fact offer a true, native 4K gaming experience. On the contrary, it looks like Project Scorpio will be using the same "checkerboard rendering" technique utilized by Sony to upscale games to 4K for a fraction of the processing bill.

Microsoft is calling its rendering technique "sparse rendering," but it's basically the exact same thing as Sony's checkerboard technique. Microsoft even reportedly points to the same game - Rainbow Six Siege - as Sony's Mark Cerny when explaining the technique to developers. The technique works extremely well, and make no mistake: this will make Project Scorpio a viable 4K (or faux-K) gaming console. It won't be leagues ahead of what Sony's done with the PS4 Pro, however.

So there you have it. It doesn't sound like we're dealing with the 4K, expectation-crushing powerhouse we were all hoping for.

M$ is working directly with AMD on this one. They know more than how to to buy PC parts on Newegg lol. I'm pretty sure they got this.

Xbox needs a killer conference again. Remember E3 2014 when they killed it? Awesome games such as Phantom Dust, Scalebound, Crackdown, Project Spark and Fable Legends.

I've been enjoying the hell out of all those games. :P

@strrckshn: I'm still waiting on gran turismo 7 and god of war. I saw them both at e3 a few years back and even in the most recent ps4 Christmas commercial. I was really shocked to find out that they don't even have a release window. Well I'll enjoy them when they come out. Hopefully before ps5. I bought a ps4 to play them and have been waiting so long they even released a new Playstation in that time frame. Two ps4 consoles later still no gt7 or gow, but plenty of uncharted and remasters. :)

@strrckshn: I'm really sad about Scalebound.... like I was honestly depressed when it was cancelled.

Thankfully, we're at least receiving a remaster for Phantom Dust. Hopefully this E3 will be huge. I'd also love it if next year we don't see Crackdown 3, Sea of Thieves, Cuphead, or State of Decay 2 (this one wouldn't be so bad) during E3 2018. They really should be released by that point.

@bryanweary: MS did own the IP when it was being worked on and I heard rumors that MS no long has the rights to the name of the IP, but all the in-game assets are still under their ownership. It's only a rumor though so take it with a grain of salt.

I'm still hoping for a miracle announcement that the game is uncancelled, but I know it'll never come.:/

They haven't learned their lesson yet. They always want to go first allowing Sony to show them up. It happens each and every year. The sad part is...the most exciting new IP they have to offer is Sea of Thieves and that s*** looks boring. Xbox will forever be known as the Halo/Gears machine and now they've exhausted their heavy hitters and are praying that Scorpio and Cuphead saves the day xD

Spoiler Alert: Somebody at *****so** told me that they're planning a pretty sweet AR presentation with Scorpio involved which more than likely will be the highlight of the show. You heard it here first...

@louixiii: If, for 1 moment you stopped flaming PS, you might recognize that only Ponies think PS conferences are relevant,.....do they concentrate on great sizzle reels?...absolutely..do any of those games come out in our lifetimes....ahh, no....if you are simply a fanboy, you don't care about the facts, but if you are a gamer....PS's conferences suck balls as there are many cool looking games you will likely never play.....well, you might one day when they run like crap and are not relevant.....not necessarily talking about The last Guardian....although Ponies chirped about that game for 10 years....and then 3 of you bought it when it came out....kudos.

@Daelusca: the market for exclusives is very small. Even with almost a 60million install base ps4 exclusives struggle to sell a few million. There's something wrong there. Either ps4 exclusives duck balls or ponies just don't play them.

@Daelusca: I've played nearly every game they revealed in past E3 conferences so what are you talking about? Every GOW game...KZ...Uncharted...you name it...even TLOU AND TLG.You have no grounds to argue therefore your argument (that PS games are never released in our lifetime) is absurd.

And while the whole "PS conferences suck" argument is purely subjective, I disagree and so does MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS of other people. GOW4 announcement, Shemue 3, TLG release date, FF7 remake, TLOU 2...all announcements this gen that wowed fans and critics alike...

Meanwhile...Microsoft has yet to release a Phantom Dust sequel which was announced during the ORIGINAL Xbox era. Now that makes TLG's wait look like a stroll through the park. Also...they pushed back nearly their ENTIRE 2016 line up. Granted...everyone in the business pushes games back but to push/cancel 8 games (Sea of Thieves, Crackdown, Cuphead, Gigantic, Scalebound, Fable Legends, Below, Halo Wars 2) in one year is unheard of...so while you're criticizing Sony fans...you sound like the biggest Xbox fanboy on site lol

@louixiii: lol...yes, millions and millions of people can be as bias and stupid as you...no question.

So, you have played "nearly every game" they announced at last E3...let's fact check that real quick....the big games they announced were...Death Standing (no release date announced), God of War (no release date announced), Horizon Zero Dawn (next month and originally announced at E3 in 2015), Detroit (no release date announced), Days Gone (no release date announced), and Spiderman (no release date announced)......as most of these games are years away, which ones exactly did you play? Or are you referencing known games they put in sizzle reels that were announced many E3's ago....no need to respond as we both know the answer.

Look, I like Sony, but their E3 practices are disgusting to me as a gamer...I don't want hype for years, I want games.

You want games? Guess you haven't played BloodBorne, Infamous: SS, Until Dawn, No Man's Sky, Uncharted 1,2,3 or 4, The Witness, Ratchet&Clank, Nioh, SFV, KOFXIV, Let It Die, TLG, Gravity Rush 1&2, Yakuza 0...need more...

Batman VR, Thumper, Battlezone, Bound, EVE Valkerie, RE7 VR

With all of these games available...you say you want games xD

GTFOH Boxtroll... you're a joke. Speaking of E3 practices...how was E3 2013 for MS?...no need to respond as we both know the answer.

I think it's going to hit the ground running. It's really all about competition. People are going to go for the best system, but Microsoft don't care how much money the Xbox division makes. At least they're trying new things where others aren't. I can't see how this can end badly if they price it correctly. As an educated guess, they will price it back at £400 as the original Xbox One console cost when it released.

Also, the devs seem more than happy.

@gtxplayer: No chance this is priced at anything higher than US $400. No question that the average XB owner has more disposable income than the average PS owner, if only as most concerned with cost moved to PS this gen, but US $500 without any exclusive (to Scorpio) games at launch will see this flop....given that MS is one of the wealthiest companies on earth, with more cash in the bank than Sony has market cap, I am betting they are willing they are willing to sell this at breakeven...US $350 - $400.

@Daelusca: They will and that's why its backwards compat. It doesn't need any exclusives at launch. There is easily enough hype around its processing power that people will buy it just for the sake of that.
