Xbox Game Pass Sign-Ups "Really Strong"

the Netflix-style program is starting strong, it seems.

Microsoft launched a Netflix-style program called Xbox Game Pass last week, and it appears the early reaction to it has been strong.

Writing on Twitter, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said it's "just the start" for the Xbox One program, but "early signups and feedback have been really strong..."

Xbox Game Pass arrived last week for Xbox Live Gold members with a 14-day free trial. The official launch for everyone is slated for June 1, so there is not much longer to wait.

For $10/month, subscribers can play more than 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 games (via backwards compatibility) on Xbox One as much as they want for as long as the title is available. The catalog will be refreshed on a monthly basis as a small number games are added and others removed.

Some of the high-profile Xbox Game Pass titles in the catalog now include Halo 5, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, and Resident Evil 0. You can see all of the Xbox Game Pass titles right here.

This is a good deal.

The fact it mixes old and new games and hits the $10 monthly price point makes it better than PSnow.

Sony should have added PS4 games like they talked about and lowered the monthly price point like everyone thought from the beginning.

@lrdfancypants: eh.. better, no. Both have strong points.

Sony is still bringing ps4 titles to psnow, but the bigger difference is that psnow works on multiple platforms, even without a console, while game pass is stuck on just xb1. There is also a difference in library, and some between the internet issues/methods of distribution.

It all boils town to game pass being a good deal to a small group of people, further shrunk by it's poor starting library limiting it's possible consumer base. While psnow has a large library of well rated titles distributable to a larger audience with some pricing issues.

@Mirimon78: Game pass is heaps better than PSNow. It DOESN'T MATTER what the game selection is, if the service that provides said games is POOR, and even from people with GOOD internet all I ever mostly hear about PSNOW is that it is LAGGY, with bad INPUT LAG, and DOWNGRADED RESOLUTION. Last Of Us, in 720p, laggy, who cares what platform you can play that on, you are not getting the full proper game experience as if you had the console itself in front of you. Also Game Pass is just starting so you can't judge it just from starting library, new titles will be rotating in every month. And it's cheaper. AND, did you even know this part I wonder...if you want to buy a Game Pass game you are offered a discount. PSNow offers no such feature.

@sodapoppimpski: Of course Game Pass would work on Scorpio, it's still an Xbox One, just has a different current name. PS Now is PS4 and PC. Also since it is a streaming service, any of their games from any platform could be played on any platform they made a client for.

@Mirimon78: some pricing issues? even now 2 years after the launch of the service the pricing is terrible add to the fact if you have poor internet speeds then the service is practically useless and if you have got good internet speeds, there is still the issue of lag and latency, on top of that if your internet drops out, or playstation network is having problems you cant use the service at all, at least with game pass you can play the games without having a connection to the internet, that alone makes it better value.

@eternalrogue198:People forget that Sony has to recoup the costs of all the hardware involved in running PS Now. The setup, the creation of new clients to run PS3 games on non-Sony platforms. It isn't cheap. With the 3 month pass you can get it for $15 a month which is reasonable. Game Pass will need very little in the way of new hardware. Game Pass is $10 a month for single player games. Remember not everyone has Xbox Live Gold. While PS Plus isn't required for PS Now to play multiplayer. While this seems self evident and not important by itself, it is worth noting when trying to compare Game Pass to PS Now.

Also Digital Foundry did an assessment of PS Now and found it acceptable. Works best when using a wired connection, with controllers pluged in. I think most people think their Wi-Fi that probably isn't setup to handle something like game streaming is sufficient.

I'm not saying the price is good, but it's not a terrible as people make it out to be. While Game Pass isn't this new mystical greatness they'd have you believe. Both are good for their respective audiences and the competition should benefit both sides.

@darkelf83: Acceptable is not a premium experience. Who uses or wants to use a wired connection? Or plugs in their controllers? Most regular Xbox players have Gold, a much larger percentage compared to the percentage of PS4 players who subscribe to +. Basically 80 million Gold to a bit over 20 million Plus. And the most likely people to subscribe to an add on service are the Gold people, making your point moot about there being people who would subscribe to the Pass but not have Gold for multiplayer...most of them probably would.

@NeonicTrash: Why wouldn't you want a wired connection? It's far more reliable then wireless, it's faster, has lower latency and isn't hard to setup. 80 million gold? You wish, the last released numbers were that live had 55 million active users. I'd love to know where you got that 80 million gold figure from? I've looked around and cannot get a solid answer on gold subscription numbers.

As of last June Sony did release that 20.8 million people paid for PS Plus and that there were around 60 million active PlayStation Users, but the article notes that MS has not released Live Gold numbers and that "active" numbers are for both paid and free accounts.

Game Pass is only available on the X1, so you cannot count anyone with gold on 360 or Windows. I'd bet a lot fewer X1 owners have gold then you'd like to think. Why won't MS release gold subscriber numbers, seems kinda like how they won't release console sales numbers, bad for stock.

@eternalrogue198: you can play offline, but you wiill still need damn good internet frequently to DL those games..thr goal of which was to engage more people into wanting to pay for gold so that they can enjoy h5 to it's fullest.. (notice how the top games are mp focused??) And only on an xb1..... one platform.... to access that service you haved to have spent a large amount of money on some poor hardware..... better value??, arguable

@Mirimon78: Spent a large amount of money on what? On a cheap X1s? On a 60/year Gold account that gives you 2 dozen+ AAA titles even if you never play a single minute online? Poor hardware? You mean only slightly less powerful than a base PS4? And since when do Playstation game fans want to game so hard on other platforms, these other platforms you keep going on about? That's why the PSP and Vita failed right? Playstation game fans want to play on their Playstations.

I agree, if it's already owned it'd be nice to be able to play it.

It does have a very large library but it's only cheap if bought annually and they should have been at the $10 price point by now.

Yes, like I said annual purchase brings it down.

It would be wise of them to set a standard $10 monthly price as well.

Also, since it has competition now it would also be best for them to speed up the inclusion of PS4 games.

Considering you get 14 days free trial for Gold members. The only test they should conduct on sign up numbers is after this free period expires. So far out of the 100 odd games on offer there is very little you would actually want to pay to play.

@Marky360: Mad Max i already have on PC and it runs at 144 fps , it is pretty fun but 30 fps on the console i fell asleep. This game just cries out to be played as fast as possible and that is what makes the combat fun.

Devil May Cry is a pretty old game. I doubt we will see anything new on here as they won't want to risk sales which is the larger problem.

Just a way to make more money from older games.

It may improve over time but most of what's here most people would already have played and a hell of alot of it is just 360 and arcade games.

@deviltaz35: I play Mad Max on X1 and it runs fine.

You've been console gaming for awhile, your ignoring the fact there are always new gamers coming into the console and PC space. For someone whose just starting a 360 or X1 library this is a great cheap way to try a bunch of games without buying, for 10 bucks, and if you want to buy something you get a discount. Your looking at the service from a console veteran perspective only...and I expect the selection to improve. New titles will be added every month. Mad Max is a 2015 game. There a ton of great games that year we could start to see more of. And next year there could be 2016 games. Not all of us buy everything at launch.

@deviltaz35: it is a new service, how many services do you know of like this, had great value and selection in the beginning? It's kind of like with the Nintendo Switch, there is a certain group that it is well worth purchasing in the beginning, everyone else should wait. But in this case, the more sign ups, the greater probability more publishers will sign up for this

So it's like PS Now but better because you can actually download the games instead of streaming them. Not to mention it includes X1 and 360 titles, whereas Now only does PS3. All for half the price.

I guess having the PS4 outsell the X1 has been a good thing. Look at all the good services we get.

@hacker_fc: I'm still confused by this... So you pay the $10, download 100 games, unplug your console, and you can play the games forever? I don't understand why MS wouldn't have some kind of online check. Or maybe they use an internal clock on the Xbox.

@joshrmeyer: You can play them as long as you keep paying the monthly $10 and as long as they are still part of the Game Pass library. Games will be removed and added every month. After 30 days you'd need to sign in so the service can check if the game is still part of Game Pass, and if your still a Game Pass subscriber.

It truly is a great service and a great value. I've got too many games in my backlog and not enough time to play so it's not for me right now. I can see huge value for others though and I could go in on it in the future. MS has become the king of consumer friendly gaming polices, features and service this gen.

@cfscorpio: Maybe on consoles. To me this service is completely obsolete. I rather have a system like Steam, where you have sales now and then and can pay for the games you actually want. In addition to that Xbox has still the worst gaming library of all platforms. Whats the point of having cheap access to games, when they are not fun?

@Sozialminister: Err...Switch has like, 20 games now? And Wii U was a complete failure. X1 same as PS4 has all the major AAA multiplats since 2013, as well as millions selling award winning exclusives and a lot of AA/indie stuff, some of which is console exclusive, some of which is only also available on PC. Your opinion is not fact, and I think you wish Steam had a try before you buy service just like this, but they won't. Your life is controlled by Gaben.

@Sozialminister: Well let's use logic. It's just a fact that Xbox Live has games that people want because it's a very successful service that sells millions of copies of games.

Now my opinion on the quality of the library is completely subjective but so is yours but I gave a reason as to why I believe it to be of good quality while you are just trolling and hurling insults.

P.S. Don't lump CNN in with Donald Trump. CNN is a respectable news organization that is always striving to tell the most accurate news possible. They have never produced fake news. Donald Trump is a pathological liar that only calls CNN "fake news" to destabilize the country while lessening the impact of his scandals, follies and bad policies.

@cfscorpio: I'm with you on defending Game Pass to that PC troll but your wrong about the non-gaming stuff.

CNN isn't respectable at all. They have been wrong, lied, or intentionally misquoted people to serve their own agenda or for ratings MANY times going back decades.

Just a sample:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNN_controversies

Also your hating on Trump. But Obama was possibly the worst president EVER. And this is who America voted for. We didn't want Hillary. Hillary could've been even worse than Obama. Obama hurt this country and Hillary would've made it worse. Even if Trump fails at everything (which he won't), a person was voted in with completely different ideas and philosophy, instead of a 3rd Obama term, which america said NO to.

Not a 3rd Obama term but continuing his great legacy. The only thing that stopped Obama from doing more was the Grand Obstruction Party.

@cfscorpio: Thats quite a reply from someone who previously stated he is "done with me", huh?

Anyway, XBL may sell millions of games, but considering how massive the whole video game industry is nowadays, XBL is still rather small. Steams user base is multiple times larger and Steam doesnt even include the biggest mp games on this planet, like Leagues of Legends, World of Tanks and everything Blizzard. Heck, I think LoL alone has more monthly players than Xbl as a whole.

Then we have another big platform, which has much larger user base and revenues than XBL: Smart phones. I wouldnt be suprised if this even the place were most people are playing today.

In addition to that there is still the Playstation dominating console business with way more users and games sold than Xbox. In long term I can even see the Switch taking the 2nd place from Xbox. Outside of USA/UK there is little interest in Xbox anyway.

So when you say "XBL has games that people want" it sounds like an effing advertisement and not a fact. You should rather say "XBL has games that a TINY PERCENTAGE of people want". Because thats what a few million games are among billions played and sold every year.

And regarding CNN: Not being american, I dont watch it too often, but I have see them spreading fake news once in a while, especially when it comes to international conflicts. They lied about Syria, Libya, Ukraine, Iraq. They spread deep state fake news in order to drag western nations into these conflicts. They are just another media outlet owned by a huge corporation (Time Warner in this case) to spread propaganda in their interest, Every major news company on earth is propagandizing for their corporare or political owners. None of them is trustworthy. Are you really that naive?

@Sozialminister: There are over 80 million Xbox Gold subscribers and less than 30 million PS+ subscribers despite about twice as many people owning a PS4. The majority of Xbox owners play online.

There are more PC gamers than Xbox owners...wow, really? I've NEVER HEARD such facts before...how did you discover this amazing info? Maybe email Gamespot, let them know so they can post on front page?

The maybe one thing you were right about, is yes, most people are playing on mobile phones, mobile games now generate more revenue than PC. That's right, Candy Crush, Flappy bird and angry birds have eclipsed the mighty Steam master race...since according to you whatever makes the most money is the big, best, and most important thing. So every #1 money making movie every year is ALWAYS THE BEST, and your personal favorite, same for musician, TV show, etc,...right?

Another revelation by you, PS4 is selling more stuff than Xbox. As an Xbox owner I already knew this, but if I didn't come to sites like this I wouldn't even know that, and wouldn't care, as it doesn't effect my experience playing any of the games I like on Xbox. Why the hell should I care what millions of strangers around the world are spending their personal money on? It has nothing to do with me.

I'm an American and Xbox is the American console, primarily made for and targeted at the American market. I don't care that Xbox has never caught on in Africa, or Asia, or parts of Europe. Why should I?

At end of 2016 Playstation had a 15 percent higher console market share than Xbox. That's really not that much. 3Ds has 3rd highest market share, and guess what's after that? 360, an 11 year old system. You keep typing in all caps "TINY PERCENTAGE", trying to diminish the Xbox brand...there was an article here just a few weeks ago listing countries who spend the most on gaming and I believe the US was #2, and many of the industry's biggest games are made here, so for Xbox to sell as well as it does here, make the yearly billions it does, and to be the #2 console in the American market is actually a big deal.

And if your that obsessed with numbers, Sony as a company overall has been struggling financially for years, while Microsoft didn't even enter the console market till 2001, and are one of the richest companies in the world. So you see...I'll translate to your 10 year old thinking...Sony is just a TINY PERCENTAGE of GLOBAL ECONOMY...while Microsoft and it's software and services are a MASSIVE MASSIVE ZILLION DOLLARS....AMERICAN COMPANY....yes, even bigger than your precious Valve and Steam. You know your Lord Gaben used to work for Microsoft? You should love Microsoft for helping Gabe pay his massive food bills in his early fat days.

Where Half Life 3?

Also, how's that Steam customer service these days? Much improved I'm sure...

Switch overtaking X1, ahhaaa. Sony and MS have moved on to 4k...Switch's flagship game has framerate issues running at less than 1080p. Nintendo hasn't moved more than 13 million console units since the Wii which was a motion gimmick magnet for casual gamers and people who don't even care about video games. Nintendo would love to have Xbox's sales right now that you think are small.

Switch ain't overtaking shit.

Also your probably running Windows, so really, just shut up.

@NeonicTrash: Dude, take a breath. You are having a complete meltdown.

Almost nothing of your last comment has anything to do with cfscorpios previous statement we have been talking about.

Yes, I use Windows of course. Yes, Gabe Newell worked for Microsoft before. Yes, Microsoft is one of the biggest companies on earth. So what? All of this has nothing to do with the topic. Its still a most tiny percentage of gamer who care about their console games.

You say there are 80 million Xbl Gold subscribers. I dont believe these numbers though. There probably just about 30 million Xbones sold worldwide. So every console has 2-3 gold subscribers? Even considering there are some guys still playing on 360 this number sounds ridiculously fake.

You are kind of neat when you first say "Xbox games is what people want" and once this statement backfired to you you go "What do I care what people play. I am murica,"

Ok, then why bother to make such statements in the first place? Why bother to make huge replies to me about that? You could have said "Xbox games is what american people want" even though this would be a vast exaggeration, considering Americans rather play Playstation and smart phones. Yes, even Americans prefer Playstation over the American console. So your self-centric argument was basically pointless.

I also never said more succesful products are better products. Thats just you using strawman arguments because you cant factually defend cfscorpios statement. I personally dont even like most of the well-selling blockbuster games. I dont play CoD, I like Counterstrike instead. I dont play Uncharted, I play Persona. I play lots of indie games as well.

I mean out of all gaming devices its the Xbox thats almost only contains huge AAA-blockbuster games, but barely offers anything beside that, It doesnt have many indie games and also it doesnt have many exclusive games people want. Look at the sales of games like Sunset Overdrive. Its pathetic. Xbox gamers like Haloforzagears and their multiplatform blockbusters, but they shit on everything beside that.

And before you try more strawman arguments against me: I am rather planning on buying a Switch and Zelda, than having an Xbone to be only able to play Justin Bieber games.
