Xbox Game Pass Sign-Ups "Really Strong"

the Netflix-style program is starting strong, it seems.

Microsoft launched a Netflix-style program called Xbox Game Pass last week, and it appears the early reaction to it has been strong.

Writing on Twitter, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said it's "just the start" for the Xbox One program, but "early signups and feedback have been really strong..."

Xbox Game Pass arrived last week for Xbox Live Gold members with a 14-day free trial. The official launch for everyone is slated for June 1, so there is not much longer to wait.

For $10/month, subscribers can play more than 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 games (via backwards compatibility) on Xbox One as much as they want for as long as the title is available. The catalog will be refreshed on a monthly basis as a small number games are added and others removed.

Some of the high-profile Xbox Game Pass titles in the catalog now include Halo 5, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, and Resident Evil 0. You can see all of the Xbox Game Pass titles right here.

Really strong? Lmao that's because everyone's in the trial period. Soon as it ends barely anyone will keep it. I started my free trial over the weekend and there's nothing to make me want to keep it after it ends.

@freeryu: no not true at all. A lot of people just sign up for free trials for many things and they cancel it at the end. I did the same with PlayStation Now.

@freeryu: because obviously it would strong during during a 14 day free trial period. After that ends and people are actually paying for it for months is what is going to matter.

@freeryu: The negative aura in this place (and internet in general) is very strong. Of course it's important to point out why things are what they are

1. Obviously as it's giving everyone 14 days free, so who wouldn't try it - the retention figures are the important ones

2. Stop calling it the 'Netflix of games' that's what psnow is - streaming just like Netflix. This is more like the EA access of other developers

The problem for me is I own all the games I would be interested in playing, most for quite a while now. They need a bigger selection in my opinion. A lot of the games are 7 or 8 year old xbox360 games. Some might find value, but I don't and for that reason, I'm out (shark tank)

@iammcgruber: It takes time and money. They already made their investment. If you want more games than the best way to get them is to partake in the service.

It's a good idea and for sure the free trial is appealing. It will be interesting to see long term figures for this.

I'm not sure this is good for developers though. How do they benefit from this longer term?

I won't buy game x and wait till its on the download service.

I could see myself paying for a month here and there to be honest to play a couple of games I would otherwise not buy once Zodiac age, Elite and Skyrim Switch are all finished up.

This doesnt look good for future gaming at all sure its a nice option to have if you can afford it but who says microsoft wont try the same no second hand games if this catches on like they wanted to before the x1 launched. Hopefully this will be just a lesser evil playstation game streaming service but this makes me a little worried for the future.

While I may not use it myself I think that it's a great idea and definitely a better option then streaming games.

While I like the idea, and I'm glad my xbox has a comparable service to PSNOW.... PSNOW has more games that I actually want to play... Game Pass is a little too similar to Netflix in that it's like sprinkled with a few legit good things, surrounded by content that is basically filler in terms of games you'd want to seriously spend time playing.

It's like I do get the politics and barriers behind the scenes of why these services are like this, but its just annoying.

EDITED: To tone down my Playstation praise, considering it seemed a little to fanboy original.

@HenrySix: Cause EA Access could start a bad trend where we have loads of games companies with early access games passes for their games. Why do you think we have to pay online for xbox, Playstation & now nintendo? Cause people bought into a bad trend which microsoft started then everyone else followed suit.

@gamingdevil800: A bad trend of consumer choice? EA Access is a great service and gives you early access and trial gameplay on games so you can try them before you buy, potentially saving a lot of money. This service could do the same thing for people, your not seeing it. People can play games without buying them, instead of buying something full price they end up not liking. And you get a discount if you buy something through the service. You have to pay online for xbox because it was required for multiplayer and MILLIONS of people wanted to play multiplayer. Internet console gaming was still in early mostly pre-broadband stages in early 2000s...games and networks and servers are much bigger, complex, and more expensive now. Paid online console gaming was ALWAYS going to happen...ALWAYS...it doesn't matter who started charging first. And PS+ may be shit value but Xbox Gold is a great value, and again, actually helps people save money with the weekly deals, and gives good free games every month.

Good price, even in Australia. As I already have too large a back catalogue I'll have to wait until I'm ready. There were a few games in the list of 100 I'd like to play/try.

I look forward to seeing what it has once I finish my current list of incomplete/yet-started games.

As an aside, would this devalue the 2nd hand trade? hmm

@emerin76: most likely, devs benefit from games being part of the service, so bigger games will probabily get added down the line, for only $10 its better than any other rental program for games on a monthly basis that i have seen

I might sign up for the free trial, but from my perspective, gamefly is still a better value, since it offers so much more and includes new titles.

@Marky360: I've always had great shipping times. Go with the 2-game plan, and you cann play one while waiting for a new one.

They don't always have new releases in stock, but if you add them to your q before they come out, you can sometimes get them on or even before release date.

@Pyrosa: well..... Except for the fact that 1 game out with gamefly is nearly 1 and a half times the cost of the game pass per month. I will conceded that it is equal to Gold and Game Pass if you get a year subscription to Gold, but then you are paying $30+ USD for everything depending on your state and taxes

@noctisumbra: You have to buy gift cards to make it worth. a 2-game 3-month gift card costs like, $36.50 + tax, which is like, $13 a month.
