Xbox Game Pass Will Add Elder Scrolls 6, Starfield, And All Other Bethesda Games

With the news that Microsoft has acquired Bethesda, the companies offered a reminder that first-party games are available on release day through Game Pass.

Microsoft has acquired Bethesda and its parent company ZeniMax for a whopping $7.5 billion, bringing it into the Xbox fold. That includes some massive franchises like Doom, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls. But as part of the acquisition news, the companies also dropped a reminder that first-party games like Starfield will be available on Game Pass upon release. You may never have to actually purchase another Bethesda game again.

The announcement from Bethesda mentions Starfield specifically: "Microsoft will grow from 15 to 23 creative studio teams and will be adding Bethesda's iconic franchises to Xbox Game Pass. This includes Microsoft's intent to bring Bethesda’s future games into Xbox Game Pass the same day they launch on Xbox or PC, like Starfield, the highly anticipated, new space epic currently in development by Bethesda Game Studios."

Now Playing: Xbox Series X And Series S Prototype Impressions

In a roundtable interview following the announcement, Bethesda Game Studios' Todd Howard said that some people from Microsoft have seen Starfield. But don't expect it to debut anytime soon. He also mentioned that he likes to wait "as long as possible" to show his games.

The press release makes no such specific mention of Elder Scrolls 6--which Howard has said is still a long way off--but the precedent set by other first-party games would suggest that it will come to Game Pass too. This also means that current ZeniMax games like Doom Eternal are fair game. In that specific game's case, it is coming to Game Pass on October 1 for both Xbox One and PC. Any sequels to these or the company's many other franchises will hit Game Pass too. If you have an Android device and Game Pass Ultimate, you'll likely be able to stream them on the go, too.

A note from Howard also noted that Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 will benefit from some big tech changes at the studio. Those two games, and possibly others, will use what he's calling the "largest engine overhaul since Oblivion." No date has been set for either game, but Skyrim was originally released back in 2011 and has been ported to practically every system since. It's even playable on Amazon Alexa ... kind of. It's funny for at least a few minutes. Just don't expect to make your own character.

Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI were both announced far earlier than we typically see from Bethesda. During its E3 2018 presentation, the games both received title cards and extremely brief teasers. We know almost nothing about them two years later.

Microsoft also noted in its announcement that Game Pass subscriptions have risen to 15 million users. That's a big number of monthly subscribers to its all-you-can-eat game subscription, even without the extra games coming from the Bethesda acquisition. But clearly, Xbox Game Pass is key to the Bethesda acquisition. Xbox head Phil Spencer has also indicated that the move is more about increasing the value of its services than locking down exclusives. With so many Bethesda studios releasing games, a Game Pass subscription could help you save a substantial amount of money. With streaming access via Game Pass Ultimate, it's even more impressive.

There are two Bethesda games that might not come to Xbox Game Pass, too--Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo, both of which were announced as PS5 exclusives before this deal went through. Whether they will eventually make their way to Xbox now is unknown.

Game Pass is also included in Microsoft's All Access payment plans for console purchases, which may get another big boost tomorrow when pre-orders go live for Xbox Series X and Series S. For more details, read our Xbox Series X and Series S preorder guide. Goo luck in managing to track one down!

The best value? LOL! They paid $7.5 BILLION! That's Billion with a B. The entire Star Wars franchise, the most influential Hollywood property in history only went for $4 Billion.

And for what? Elder Scrolls Skyrim? Wasn't that released in like 2010? Look at all the pictures accompanying these news segments. All pictures of low res knights in plate mail from the cover of an Xbox 360 game.

I am not a Sony fanboy. I have both current gen consoles, and have always bought both. But even I can see that Sony puts out FAR better games then MS, and more frequently. Its not even close.

@hsnberg:You're referring to Skyrim 5. Microsoft does indeed get Skyrim 5 but Also upcoming Skyrim 6, Starfield and all new upcoming ip's. With this deal they get everything Bethesda already has (which still makes a lot money BTW) and forthcoming titles such as Deathloop and Ghostwire. $7.5 billion is pocket change for Microsoft. They won't miss it.

When you look at what Microsoft's gaming division has historically shown interest in, this could indicate quite a lot about Bethesda's future games.

Let's all be clear on this. If Sony bought Zenimax and Bethseda, there would be no debate as to the titles would be locked on their platform and possibly PC. Xbox would never see these title again.

That's it.

Look at how Sony locked in SFV. That game is legacy game across both consols and Sony made sure it never saw the light of day on MS.

If you honestly believe that MS has an issue about lost revenue of not releasing on Sony than I believe you need to look at the balance sheet and the overall goal of this and future generations. You should fully expect that Microsoft will make these exclusive to the Xbox.

You should also expect that Sony will soon have a Studio purchase annoucement of their own coming shortly. They are no longer competing with selling more systems, they are now competing with Gamepass.

@ciphfer: The problem is that Sony does not have the money to make a huge purchase like this.

As a Game Pass owner for PC this is awesome as I'll be able to play Doom Eternal very soon.

I don't participate in the console wars, I'm purely PC. And honestly, these games will still probably make it to Sony. But, it would be a great justice against snobby PS5 fans for these games to be made exclusively PC Xbox. The snobbiness is getting really old.

@JimmyFraska: Nah, dude...if MS really wanted to stick it to Sony and PS5 owners, they'd release the titles on the PS5 and then sit back and laugh as they rake in the money from them.

@JimmyFraska: MS just bought these studios. There's very little chance that these head to PS5. Surely these are now Xbox / PC exclusives.

It's pretty clear now, after the E3 2021 showcase, that new MS studios games are Xbox console exclusives. Starfield, Redfall (new Arkane game), Outer Worlds 2 are all Xbox exclusive, so I think that clarifies the strategy quite a bit.

@fragnem: MS has released quite a few games on Switch. Guess they have a friendlier relationship with Nintendo than with Sony but in any case, them owning an IP doesn't guarantee that they keep it Xbox exclusive

@fragnem: They might choose to make money for at least some of those games rather than having them exclusive and only gaining game pass subscribers from them. If PlayStation is going to sell tens of millions of consoles again, then surely it would be a waste not to sell to that audience just for the few people that will say "I won't buy a PS5 because it doesn't have Fallout or Doom".

@fragnem: Microsoft is about making money. These will all release to PS5. They may be timed, but they will not leave money on the table. Gamepass is where Microsoft will make their money for their console. You can’t beat paying peanuts to get access to Microsoft first party games.

@maxxdiamond: Nobody knows at this point, perhaps like with Outer Worlds, games already in development will release multiplatform, but in the future they will most likely become Microsoft exclusive. It makes no sense for Microsoft to pay all that money and not make the games be exclusive.

@maxxdiamond: Do you think Halo, Gears, Forza will be PS5 games? What about stuff from Rare, Obsidian, Ninja Theory, inXile? If they just wanted that PS5 money, why wouldn't they do the same for these other studios?

@fragnem: Good points!!! No, obviously those are Xbox exclusives. Just like with Minecraft, Elder Scrolls and Fallout will be released to the masses. There is to much money not to be made. Obviously, we aRe all just speculating, so, that’s my guess. :)

@maxxdiamond: Minecraft was already on PS4 when they purchased it. New games for the most part are going to just be on Xbox/PC. 75% of the gaming market is accessible to Xbox.(Mobile, Console, PC, etc.) without relying on sales from Sony/Nintendo.

When you think about it on a large scale, not just console related revenue, it becomes clear they dont need Sony to make money.

@Xylymphydyte: Outer Worlds was mostly complete prior to Microsoft's purchase of Obsidian. Minecraft is a rare exception. What other Microsoft-owned studio makes Playstation games? Compare that to the studios that make exclusive games.

@fragnem: I would not be so sure. Certainly in their rights to do so, now (unless something official was signed behind the scenes they Sony could sue over), but MS has made it pretty clear their primary goal is to push software and software subscriptions and to move away from overreliance on hardware sales. The best way for them to make big bux on this acquisition is the opposite of console exclusivity. We'll have to see what their strategy is in the end

@xantufrog: No, they are trying to push game pass and services, which would lead to continued exclusivity in game pass, similar to Netflix/Amazon Originals.

@fragnem: that's a fair point - but I think they're juggling optics on that. If they push those to PS they look like they gave something up. On the flip side, if they pull these away from platforms they look like a bad guy.

We'll see, I guess

@Archaicc: It's not about MS caring what Sony thinks. It's about MS giving an illusion (delusion?) to consumers that they offer something exclusive. Those are the optics I'm referring to. And it definitely matters - hordes of PS owners tout this as the reason they choose PS. So MS isn't prepared to set that aside completely lest they truly want to leave the console business entirely.

Conversely, the gamble is... big... if they pull them from PS. The assumption is that all those people are now going to buy an XBox in addition to a PS. Some will. Some may switch completely. But not all. They will simply, no question, sell more copies if Fallout is 100% available on both PS and XBox. Period. And looking like a good guy doesn't hurt.

So I stand by my point - but I'm not claiming to have a crystal ball. Who knows what they will actually do. Like I said above - we'll see

@xantufrog: I agree, nut Xbox definitely wants some exclusive games for their portfolio and to help drive game pass sales.

They still are going to put all the games on PC, just not on PS5, at least not all of them IMO. Xbox series s is cheap enough where people can easily afford it and play the games if they don't have a PC. We'll see.

@Archaicc: that's true. People keep questioning the purpose of the S, but I think that's yet another reason - it's juuuuust cheap enough to be a good "bite the bullet and buy it" option if they go exclusive with some or many of these heretofore unknown acquisitions

@xantufrog: 100 percent. Microsoft Gamepass is cheap and gives Xbox gamers access to awesome games for a small fee, and if you are on a different platform, Microsoft will still sell you their games. Microsoft is about money 💰 Maybe some timed exclusives, but I doubt it?

Halo, Wasteland 3, Doom Eternal, Outer Worlds, and not to mention now EA play. Its unreal value.

@Uncle_Rell: At best, they'll be timed exclusives, but I doubt they'll push the games out on PS5. It doesn't make sense for their business model. Microsoft will just try to push the xCloud service to Sony users. That's MS long term strategy anyways.

Want to play on a local machine? Get a Windows PC or Xbox.

Otherwise, check these games out on xCloud through your Android device. No need to spend all that money just to enjoy your favorite Bethesda franchises.
