Xbox Games With Gold Will No Longer Offer Xbox 360 Titles From October

Microsoft confirms that Games With Gold will stop offering free Xbox 360 games.

Beginning in October, Games with Gold will no longer offer Xbox 360 games to download, Microsoft has confirmed with GameSpot. Word of the change first surfaced in an email sent out to Dutch Xbox Live Gold subscribers (via Wario64). Xbox One games, however, will still be available each month.

"Beginning on October 1, 2022, we will no longer release Xbox 360 titles on a monthly basis as part of the Games with Gold benefit," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "We’ll focus on continuing to deliver Xbox One titles through the Games with Gold program. No other Xbox Live Gold benefits will be impacted by this change.

"We’re always looking at ways to evolve the Xbox experience based on community engagement, feedback and shifting company priorities. We have reached the limit of our ability to bring new games to the catalog from the past due to licensing and technical constraints. We will continue to focus on providing Xbox One titles through the Games with Gold program."

Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles will still be available for a redownload regardless of membership, as in the past. The program was originally introduced in 2013 for Xbox 360 consoles, and extended to Xbox One consoles in 2014 as a bonus for Xbox Live Gold subscribers.

Xbox 360 titles began appearing on Xbox One when the backwards compatibility program kicked off, although that particular effort to preserve classic Microsoft games officially concluded in November 2021.

Xbox Game Pass has also seen the appeal of Games with Gold somewhat diluted over the years, as that subscription program has regularly offered newer and bigger games within its own library. To see what's on the horizon, you can check out the updated list for all the Xbox Game Pass titles arriving in July.

It does make sense. No more OG Xbox or X360 games added to backwards compatibility, no more games to give for free. It is a finite library, and they've been giving out trash for a while already. Even trash ends eventually. They could start offering XSX indies instead, though, but I feel this is the beginning of the end of Games with Gold.

Imo, they are weaning subscribers off of Gold instead of shutting it down outright because no telling how long Xbox One games will continue to be offered. But for I sub to GPU(Gamepass Ultimate which has gold perks included.) I still have a huge catalog of 360 games that physical media so I will not miss the 360 offerings.

Claiming 360 games was indeed the only good thing about Games with Gold.

Being able to keep your claimed 360 games regardless if you’re subscribed to XBL Gold, was arguably the best perk of the subscription (that even PS Plus doesn’t offer)

Doesn’t seem like this’ll benefit the user.

Personally, I don't blame them. The 360 is more than a little long in the tooth.

However, I wish they'd decided to give the last few months some previously offered 360 games for those of us who were late to the party. Say, the last five months featuring the top ten highest rated GWG games ever, two per month. That would be cool. Even so, the 360's library is largely played out at this point.

It's a little disappointing because I feel like they could easily spend more time offering 360 games, but at the same time they now have a pretty vast collection of One games to dig through.

If they get replaced with extra Xbox One games, I'm okay with that.

@gamerboy100: It depends on what Xbox One games are offered. :)
