Xbox Handheld Is An Intriguing Idea To Phil Spencer

The Microsoft Gaming CEO is currently focused on improving the mobile experience for Xbox players on devices like the Lenovo Legion Go.

While Phil Spencer hasn't outright confirmed an Xbox handheld is in the works, he sure seems intrigued by the idea. The Microsoft Gaming CEO chatted with Polygon about how he's playing Xbox games on the go currently and shared his thoughts on how to improve the mobile experience.

For starters, Spencer wants current PC handhelds, specifically naming the Lenovo Legion Go, "to feel like an Xbox." The Xbox head honcho said he brought the device with him to GDC, and he's annoyed his save file doesn't appear on Legion Go with Fallout 76 because there isn't cross-save.

Now Playing: Why You Should Pick The Steam Deck Over The ROG Ally

"I want to be able to boot into the Xbox app in a full screen, but in a compact mode," Spencer said. "And all of my social [experience] is there. Like I want it to feel like the dash of my Xbox when I turn on the television. [Except I want it] on those devices," like the Legion Go or ASUS Rog Ally.

Spencer admitted the Xbox team is exploring "different hardware form factors and things that [they] could go do." This also comes on the heels of a new report that Microsoft is working on Xbox handheld prototypes. This device would apparently be fully native instead of just being cloud-based for gaming experiences. In addition, Spencer has said years and years ago that his team designed Xbox handhelds behind closed doors.

If Microsoft does actually bring an Xbox handheld to market, Spencer seems to imply his team will continue supporting other PC handhelds as well. "Like, if I want to go play my console games on the go with a handheld, I don't want to only be able to buy one brand of handheld. Right? ... I want everything that we're doing in the hardware space to be great. But if somebody chooses to go play today [somewhere else], I don't want them to feel like a lesser Xbox [player]," he explained.

The naming of the current generation of Xbox hardware implied various models, though so far we've only seen Series X|S. A handheld could possibly fit under Series H or just be part of a future generation. Microsoft did confirm earlier this year that next-gen Xbox hardware is under development.

I hope this Xbox handheld rumour is true and I hope the rumours of Xbox opening up their walled garden to allow storefronts like Epic Games and itch.Io on Xbox are true as well!

Steam is what I’d love to see on Xbox.

I’ve never bought a playstation brand new. Just never jelled with me. Only ever bought them cheap second hand getting my ps4 for $250AUS. Haven’t felt the need to upgrade to ps5 yet either!

If Xbox go ahead and bring these storefronts to Xbox I’ll never neeed to buy a crappy playstation ever again. I’ll just play their games on my Xbox with the superior Xbox controller through Epic or Steam.

Uncle Phil please make it so!

I'd buy one if it seemlessly plays the GP library. Can't be $500+ like the PC ones though. That's a hard sell when an X costs that much.

If they weren't clueless, a handheld is what they should've launched instead of the worthless Series S. Being able to access all your GP library on the go is a proper way of competing with other efferings. Not to release an underpowered pos with a gpu that can't handle anything.

@hardwenzen: It would have been harder to make a handheld that can play scaled down Series X and PS5 games back in 2020, though. There could be a benefit to the Series S existing and growing old at this point where, theoretically, an Xbox handheld that's about 5 years and two AMD architectures newer could run games at the same Series S settings, just with lower power draw. So devs don't have to do any extra work and all the current-gen Xbox games are already optimized for it

Harder, yes, but its Microsoft, money is not what's missing. If they wanted to do it, they could have no problemo, and that would've stole all Steam Deck hype.

@hardwenzen: I think if they did it back in 2019/2020, it would have been something more like a handheld base Xbox One, not viewed as a "next gen" machine and not future proofed or intended to be the same platform as the big premium home console. Especially if they wanted it to be under $400 back then

That would've failed. You cut ties with last gen as quickly as possible, and leave anything Xbone related behind. They needed to release a Steam Deck like system for $450-500. The point here is for it to handle current gen titles and be portable, not being as cheap as possible to compete with the toaster from Nintendo. People are ready to pay for good hardware, and expect good performance from their games. All these 30fps backlashes we've been getting on socials aren't random. People have finally discovered 60fps, and it became the norm.

@hardwenzen: while my X is definitely better, my kids S plays everything pretty well. I wouldn't call it a POS. It's a great alternative to those on a tighter budget.

@rabidgiantsr:

@hardwenzen:

I don't hate on the xbox at all. I am not a fan of the S series, as it was poorly planned out for the overall console generation. I should say, I hate the parity development thing.

If a game has missing features or delays, or just cannot get paired down to the S version, well so be it. Developers should not have to make their games the same for both versions of the console. As it adds costs they may never recover.

But on that, I do see the value of the pared down version of the 9th gen console. A lower price, that allows more consumers to jump on board, as well as and easy GP vehicle.

@rabidgiantsr: If you're on a tight budget, you're still on last gen hardware. The S serves no purpose, and seeing how poorly Xbox is selling, it shows.

@hardwenzen: The majority of new games now are no longer released on the Xbox One platform and are aimed at the Series S and X. Any games released for the Series X are also playable on the Series S so yes, it does serve a purpose which allows people who don't want to pay the $500 or whatever it is for a Series X but still want to play the latest games. I've increasingly noticed that you mainly emerge to bash anything related to Microsoft. It's not a good look. The Xbox Series of consoles have been outsold by the Playstation consoles but the Playstation consoles have also been outsold by Nintendo by a wide margin but nobody seems to pick up on that. The PS v Xbox childishness has been tiresome for a while and people like you just need to stoke the coals for some demented reason.

@just_visiting: I agree with the take on the Series S. 2 out of the 4 buddies I game with are on series S, their budget is tight and the series S was the only way for them to keep up playing with us with the xbox one not having certain games working on it. Case in point we got on the FF14 beta and if they weren't on the series S, we would have never attempted to play FF14 as a result and they wouldn't have gotten to experience that game, which they enjoyed when they got to play it, otherwise never wanted to touch anything MMO related.

lol i am not emerging to bash the xbox. i am not happy with my ps5 at all either. The S is holding the X back, and it has been like that for some time now. If they had a handheld instead, potato visuals and sub 60fps would be acceptable because its portable, and the screen is small, so it'd be harder to spot imperfections. The S, a system made to be plugged in into a 4k 50"+ tv is a real bad look for MS when its games look extremely blurry and fuzzy.

@hardwenzen: I have the X as well, it just works well as a second system so we can coop without dropping $1k on two X's. And there's a lot of folks out there who need a lower price point like that.

Not sure how the S has anything to do with poor Xbox sales either. My X consistently plays games better than my PS5. If power was the determining factor then Xbox would be ahead.
