Xbox Live Coming To Nintendo Switch, iOS, And Android, Microsoft Confirms

Microsoft teases its plans for Xbox Live.

305 Comments

Microsoft plans to expand Xbox Live to other platforms, including Nintendo Switch and mobile. The company says bringing the network to more consoles will "enable game developers to connect players between iOS, Android, and Switch in addition to Xbox and any game in the Microsoft Store on Windows PCs."

The move was teased in the description for an upcoming session at GDC, where the plans will presumably be revealed in more detail. The session, titled Xbox Live: Growing & Engaging Your Gaming Community Across iOS, Android, Switch, Xbox, and PC (Presented by Microsoft), will include details on the expansion, which Microsoft says will take Xbox Live to "over 2 billion devices with the release of our new cross-platform Xbox development kit."

Now Playing: Xbox Live Coming To Nintendo Switch - GS News Update

The description continues: "Xbox Live players are highly engaged and active on Xbox and PC, but now they can take their gaming achievement history, their friends list, their clubs, and more with them to almost every screen." Further details are scant at present, but we'll learn more during GDC, which takes place from March 18-22.

While this news doesn't necessarily concern cross-play directly, Microsoft has been talking for years now about connecting rival platforms, like PS4 and Xbox One. Xbox boss Phil Spencer previously explained that success to Microsoft involves more than just sales of Xbox One. In fact, GameSpot's discussion with him back in late 2017 is quite telling and makes this Xbox Live news sound like something it's been contemplating for years.

"I think about how successful Xbox has been, and what I think about is how many people are in engaged with something to do with Xbox, playing our games, watching things on Mixer, on Xbox Live, on our console," Spencer said. "But I look at those in aggregate, and so it's not actually about how many Xbox One Xs do I go sell, or how any Ss do I sell, or even how many of one individual game that I go sell. I look at, are we growing the number of people who have a relationship with Xbox in some way? [It] could be an Android customer in China playing Minecraft, but that's a person who's connected to our platform who's able to use Mixer, who's able to connect to Xbox Live, meet their friends online. That's really the metric for growth right now.

"I think if you get so focused just on hardware sales at this point, as gamers, we lose sight of what's going on around the console business. Console's important. I love the console space, but it's part of the gaming business, it's not total. So I just don't define success by any one individual version of our console and how many we sell. Are we growing the business? Are we growing the number of customers?"

Taking Xbox Live to other consoles seems like the natural next step after the cross-platform play that exists within certain games, such as Fortnite or Minecraft. Sony has been less cooperative when it comes to cross-platform play and allowing other services on to its PlayStation Network, and it appears this Xbox Live expansion will not apply to PS4 as yet. However, Sony did enable Fortnite cross-play as a beta late last year, so perhaps further integration of the major gaming platforms will become a possibility down the line.

Good luck expecting Microsoft to make such a walled garden known as Xbox Live open source to other OS platforms in a concerted effort

Wow, people are all up and crazy over some speculation. Still waiting to find out exactly what this really is and what it actually means for games and gamers. From another article it seems that developers will have access to some Xbox Live features and functionality for their games.

'Microsoft points out that the changes will “enable game developers to connect players between iOS, Android, and Switch in addition to Xbox and any game in the Microsoft Store on Windows PCs."'

"What this means is that the meat-and-potatoes base layer of Xbox Live will now be an option for developers on non-Xbox devices: friends lists, achievements and clubs are all mentioned. What it doesn’t mean is that you’ll be able to download Xbox games on Switch. This is simply an extension of the Live service, not the games or stores associated with it."

XBox couldn't compete with PS4 (or Nintendo) with better games so now its Microsoft's strategy to lure people into "Xbox universe".

@apoorve_katare:

Still, I dropped PsStore and Steam @ around mid2016. Games like Persona5 and Nioh is niche. 80m PS4 owners including me, ignored those games.

Can you guarantee me cross-gen-play/save between PS4 and all future PSes? How about gaming on the go? BC, FC, XPA or xCloud equivalent? Free unlimited storage cross-platform cloud save?

I now game on xb1x @ home, game in the office on my old xb1 and game on my Surfaces and Alienwares on the go. Looking forward to game on a small WoA, docking on a gamepad style. I bought more than 50 games in 2016 and I'm still buying games day1 every month. When Xbox Next is out, I'll move my xb1x to the office.

@hiro4476: Good for you if you are having fun and have time to play 50 games. I am relatively new to Consoles, I bought my first console 4-5 years ago, XBox. Then after 2 years I also bought PS4 just to try, and when I realized what I was missing, I immediately sold my XBox and don't want to look back. I really had a blast with games like Last of Us, Bloodborne, Uncharted Series and this list is long, I regretted buying XBox first.

Now this is common sense that all non exclusive games are playable on both consoles, but I am not sure I can say I played all best games of 2017-18 without playing God Of War, Spiderman, Horizon Zero Dawn etc. And More classics on the way like Last of us 2.

@apoorve_katare: it means that you prefer single players to multi-player. Multi-player games have been better on Xbox.

@apoorve_katare: Yeah what a "bad move" when they bring functions to Switch that Nintendo themselves hasn't been delivering on.

@apoorve_katare: And its a great move by MS. Now what happens when games start coming out? Sony starts panicking and reveals the PS5 early. Then we get PS5 and even MORE games on top of what MS is about to do. Its a win win for me.

@pongman75: lol what games honestly do you think is gonna come out from Microsoft in the next couple years that could make Sony panic??! They would have to get banjo three as an exclusive or something crazy to even make a little noise at this point.

@speedytimsi:

BC, FC, XPA (Intel base, ARM base PC, big, small, single screen or dual screen, whichever), xCloud (a not-vid-streaming streaming service, for incompatible or incapable devices), peripheral FC, Free, unlimited storage cross-platform cloud save, etc.

Can you promise me cross-gen-play/save between PS4 and all future PSes?

@speedytimsi: Xbox offers the best value for the money in games right now. It really isn´t about new exclusives, if that´s your main reason to choose a console, it really is not for you.

And with backwards compatibility, it´s the second best library (behind only PC, which is NOT a direct competitor).

@LeoKRock: "It really isn't about new exclusives" who buys a console for old multiplats? Isn't that what a PC is for?

@naruto945: It is.

Except an Xbox is way cheaper, and a more streamlined experience.

I really don´t want to deal with PC gaming again, I have a 10-year-old notebook that I rarely use for work stuff. Most of the time I just connect remotely to my work desktop through my tablet.

For my needs, Xbox is the best option, having everything in one place is just so simple and easy...

@LeoKRock: Slow your roll chief with your big brain “best is subjective” talk. I wouldn’t want you getting the wrong idea about this conversation. You claimed that Xbox was the best value for price which is objectively and subjectively wrong since PS4 plays not only more games but higher rated ones. Just rubbed me the wrong way that you tried to slide out with that slick comment forgetting what I actually called you out on.

@LeoKRock: Only good thing about Xbox is Backward Compatibility which is really sad, because all those backward compatible games looks a lot better on a PC.

@LeoKRock: I believe you are right w/ the backwards compatibility for now....and that's why Xbox went with the game pass or digital method where you can play Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One or the upcoming generation. But I just don't like the current model where they give you games that you might not actually like or have no interest in. I wish there they would have a model that every month you get an Xbox game credit where you can digitally purchase the game (at least for games out for more then 3 months)

@nelsonlord: I think it's cool for those games but in the long term it's just better to buy them digitally if you can play them online anywhere if that's what they are aiming for.
