Xbox Live updated, 360 Netflix exclusivity touted

Microsoft adds Games on Demand, Avatar Marketplace, viewing parties, other improvements to console's online service; Netflix search possible down the line.

As scheduled, the latest Xbox Live update is now up, running, and ready for download. As outlined on the official Xbox.com site, the new update brings a variety of features to the Xbox 360's online service, which boasts more than 20 million users. (To date, more than 30 million Xbox 360s have been sold worldwide.)

As seen in the video above, the update tweaks the 360's Netflix streaming capabilities to allow users to edit their movie queues and have their Avatars watch movies in a Mystery Science Theater 3000-style theater. However, today Microsoft reiterated that its arrangement with the Los Gatos, California-based movie rental service is the only one of its kind in the industry.

"This exclusive partnership offers you the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the television via Xbox 360," the company said in a statement aimed at rumors that the service is coming to the PlayStation 3 and Wii. "The Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience, available to Xbox Live Gold members who are also Netflix unlimited plan subscribers, at no additional cost."

Also live today is the Avatar Marketplace, which allows players to purchase new clothing and items for their virtual alter egos on the service. In addition to a selection of free clothing, the virtual mannequins can be outfitted with premium brand-name items from clothiers Adidas, Quiksilver, Roxy, and Tokidoki, along with game-themed attire from Star Wars The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes, Gears of War 2, BioShock, and several Halo games. Offerings include an Adidas trucker hat for 80 Microsoft points ($1), one of three BioShock Big Daddy helmets for MSP160 ($2), a set of COG armor from Gears of War for MSP320 ($4), and a remote-control Warthog toy from Halo for MSP320 ($4).

Last but not least, today also saw the launch of Xbox Live's new Games on Demand service, which offers a variety of full Xbox 360 catalog titles for the console. The games' cost has proven controversial in other territories, with some titles going for more than double their retail prices in Australia and New Zealand. However, in the US and Canada, the Games on Demand store has a much lower two-tiered price structure--$19.99 or $29.99--with prices in dollars, not Microsoft points. However, many Games on Demand prices are still above that of used copies at retailers such as GameStop, which is currently offering Mass Effect for just $14.99 pre-tax and shipping.

Since last week, the Games on Demand Store's lineup has also changed slightly, with Atari's Test Drive Unlimited disappearing and Electronic Arts' Battlefield: Bad Company materializing without fanfare. Manuals for the games can be downloaded and printed from the games' respective pages on Xbox.com, though they cannot yet be ordered through the site for automatic download to 360s.

Today's Xbox Live revamp did not include several Xbox Live features promised during Microsoft's E3 press briefing. Microsoft has previously said that 1080p video playback, Zune video downloads, and integration with Twitter, Facebook, and GameSpot sister site Last.fm are all due "later this fall." Speaking with game blog Joystiq, Microsoft is also considering adding Netflix search to the service as part of a future update beyond the one later this year.

People complain that they pay $50 for Live, and then MS adds more features, most free, some costing us, and people just complain about that. Honestly you people needa stop crying.

I thought buying clothes you the Avatars was a waste of time up until I read the bit about game clothing. But I wouldn't be purchasing the sponsored Addidas stuff and the like, that's essentially an in-game advertisement. You could argue that buying a hat in the real world is the same, but the counter to that is that it would've been easy for MS to just put in plain old caps instead of sponsored ones. As for the overpricing NZ and Oz games, in the Kotaku article MS US said that the pricing is the responsibility of that particular branch (MS AU), however that's shifting the responsibility away because MS US has control over all the other branches and are liable for any positive or negative actions such as charging $120 for a game.

@ChrisGamer5757 I acctually think that is the number of years you have had gold membership and NOT the number of games with 100% gamescore.

Buying clothing for your avatars? Sounds a lot like Home. I really don't see a difference in Netflix either, I've found all the movies I wanted on PSN. As far as the games on demand, I really hope that doesn't become a trend. I like buying a disc.

@spletchie, your question Dunno if you'll see this but I just determined that it means how many games you've completed to 100% of gamerscore. Nice of them to now broadcast that out to everybody.

Don't want to pay for Avatar Clothing, and I won't, but if one person does then kudos to Microsoft. As for the digital download games, I will pass I can get most of those games in hardcopy for about the same or less then the cost listed.

....Guys really? come on M$ isn't holding a knife to your throat to buy it. besides for the people that say its a waste of harddrive space you can delete the stuff and redowload anytime. Sure the games are over price (30$ too much for CoD2's 8 dollar value) but atleast you don't have to worry about scratched CD's, oh and load times. I just hope the selection expands (COD WaW,and hopefully the new games that are released. and if they are 60 bucks when the first come out they better go down in price like the hardcopy) the only thing that I want thats avalible is Battle field BC and Mass effect. and those 2 prices are that badly priced.

Like I said, if they price the GoDs right, they will take a huge cut out of the used games racket. Here's to hoping they make new releases cheaper than retail. I guess the good thing is that there is no tax -- or is there?

For all of you who have been dogging on the avatar marketplace, you should stop now. I schooled some kids on another forum about it and i'll do it again. some of you think its ridiculous that MS has done this. Putting a price on avatar merch and stuff, but why did they do that? Most of you think its pointless and that it will fail..all of you are wrong. It will succeed because we as gamers like to express ourselves a in a unique way by showing off our fave games. Tell me..how many of you who thought it was a bad idea, but yet have dash board themes and gamer pictures? ask yourself, 'why did i just get these gamer pics or themes?' they dont give you a boost in performance or enhance your gameplay do they? although it really should for some of you :P the fact of the matter is, its going to succeed, and you WILL see more of it.

I agree. Some of these prices aren't bad at all like Mass Effect. But, some are ridiculous. I got PDZ at Gamestop for $8 and R6V is there for $15. The avatar marketplace is cool, I don't know if I will ever buy anything unless its real cool but you never know.

all this stuff is really cool but its way overpriced i just bought bioshock at gamestop new for 17 bucks and they want 30. also the lightsaber and remote control car are cool but for 5 bucks no way. microsoft we are in a recession come down on your prices. But the netflix and new way to view achievements is sweet.

As a fan of the Gears of War games, i was kinda looking forward to buying a set of Cog armor as long as the price was reasonable. I checked the avatar marketplace and as far as im concerned, it is a little bit rediculous to charge that much for an avatar outfit when you can get game addons for cheaper prices. That said i was still thinking of buying the armor but the way MS has their microsoft point system set up, you have to buy more microsoft points than you really need and it really gets on my nerves.

Some games are over priced, it won't affect me anyway since I own a PS3. I rather have hard copies anyway, although it be neat if you could get rarer games like Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3. I'm still looking for it in stores around me.

They actually expect people to pay for this stupid/pointless avatar clothing? I can see all the 12 year old Halo nuts to be buying all that stuff up but get real, most of the 20 million users are not that dumb. Not to mention how overpriced your games on demand are. Just give me Last Fm already, the only thing that really was a remotely good idea.

Some of these prices aren't really that bad (Mass Effect is pretty good as is Burnout) but others are a bit overpriced especially considering the used game market. Even if you're not the sort to trade your games in buying some of these used can be a much better idea (I got Prey for $6 used, closer to its worth I'd say).

those games cost WAAAAAY too dang much. TOO much. They will only PWN suckers at those prices. The Avatar marketplace? I'd never buy one single thing from it. They should reduce the prices on the games especially given the fact you can buy them cheaper with the disc at Gamestop. The only things I like are the speed of the dashboard now and also the new rating system

@alexkn64: You might be right about the Avatar Marketplace which is outrageous(did you see the price for the lightsaber?). But Xbox 360 owners have supported micro-transactions more so then PS3 owners. Microsoft makes tons of money off of Live purchases even if you exclude the yearly subscription for the service(which isn't the same for the free service, PSN). That's why I see the Avatar Marketplace being more successful then the shops available in Home on the Playstation 3.

you'd most likely have to leave your house to make money to afford these games so you might as well hit up a game store and buy it cheaper and get the disk while you are out there.

Every single game listed costs a lot less on Amazon. Not only that but you don't have to pay taxes or shipping. Take Perfect Dark for example. 20$ on live and 14$ new on Amazon. That is a huge difference and you get the disc.
